This is a long overdue review, but I visited in May after the coldest spring ever and finally got some good patio drinks with sunshine and good vibes. It felt like it took forever to get to this point in stl weather so I was definitely excited about visiting. I ordered the Coronarita and it was delicious! Marg with a little beer in it. Tucked away in Sunset Hills is this unexpectedly bold and colorful gem: San Jose Mexican Restaurant. I came for a casual bite, and left wondering if a parking lot siesta was socially acceptable. Why? Because their skinny spicy margarita is a sneaky little knockout. I thought I was being virtuous--turns out I was being ambushed by jalapeños in stilettos. The patio was lovely, the service was fast and friendly, and the whole place is bursting with Frida Kahlo flair. I didn't eat a ton this trip (blame the liquid lunch), but everything coming out of the kitchen looked incredible. And for my fellow thrift lovers: Savers is right across the street. Came here on a Sunday and got sat right away! We did patio seating and it was really nice. Service was pretty quick and it was reasonably priced. The chips and salsa were really good too. Sitting on the patio was really nice but a train came by and was pretty loud while we were eating. I then ordered the chicken fajitis, when it arrived it was a large order it was enough for leftovers except for the fact that the chicken was dry . When I told the waitress about the chips and the dry chicken she acted like she didn't speak english . It was quiet Sunday afternoon as we were seated right away. I did not see they had a parking lot but we had no issues finding street parking. The taco salad fajita was absolutely fire. The taco shell was cooked to perfection. It had a good crunch and a good amount of cheese sauce. The chimichanga was also good but not as good as the taco salad. We enjoyed eating here. They do allow dogs on their patio. They do have a sign if you could pay in cash if possible. We'll pay in cash next time. read more

This restaurant is tucked in a shopping center next to a Savers and Super Cuts. We stopped in for dinner on a Friday and were surprised by how big the restaurant really was. The service was great and we loved how quickly we were seated and greeted with chips and salsa, we ordered the Papas Locas, Carnitas Tacos and the San Jose Burrito. Loved this place! My friends and I were all saying we're definitely coming back! Ample seating, food tasted AMAZING and all came out fresh/hot. We all got margarita flights which I loved the taste of them all and they weren't too strong. Parking and service was great as well. The only thing was the table ran out of room by the time we received everything and the appetizers came out minutes before our main entrees. Worst customer service ever. We didn't receive a $5 cheese dip that was paid for through grubhub. When we called, the lady insisted she put it in the bag and hung up on me. We called back and asked to speak to a manager. The same lady said there wasn't one and hung up on me again when I started talking. I was a frequent diner there but they lost a customer. If you're looking for a great place to have some drinks with a friend and just catch up, this is the place to go. We were not hungry as we had lunch earlier and did a little shopping but we weren't done talking so we decided to swing by here for a margarita. I remembered from a prior visit that they had margarita flights and it looked very interesting. It was listed on the menu as. Margarita Flight four 8oz flavored drinks. Mango, Hibiscus, Pineapple, and Lime Sangria $16. We decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. I think ours had a watermelon one and maybe not the hibiscus one, I'm not quite sure but they were all delicious. I could not even decide which one I like the best. Two of them came on the rocks and two of them came frozen. They also came with this straw that was coated with like a candy type stuff and seasoning. When you put it in your margarita and then tasted it, it was a bit spicy but very different. .We just couldn't quite figure out what it was, and the waitresses English was not very well to be able to explain it to us. But we tried it. We sat there for a couple hours talking, sipping on our flight and eating chips and salsa. It was a perfect ending to our afternoon. They recently did some upgrades to the dining area when you walk in and it's really cute now and organized well. They had nice music and very festive atmosphere. read more

Bar had a visual display with colorful plates above it. Overall the restaurant has the over the top color scheme and festive decor that I enjoyed. Food was solid at reasonable prices. We've been coming here for years and always enjoy their food and service. I called ahead because we had a large group and they were able to get a table ready. It was a Sunday night so it actually wasn't too crowded when we arrived around 5:30pm. My son spilled his water (even in the kids cup with the lid) right away and our server helped clean it up right away! We love their chips and salsa and guacamole. Food is always good, and we appreciate the expanded/enhanced menu of late. Servers are fairly attentive and friendly. The largest challenge for us, and thus the loss of a star, is that there is nothing there to dampen sound. On a week night, it's not usually too bad, but holding a conversation with out shouting is impossible on a weekend. We'd make our visits about twice a month if this were not the case. Last Saturday (06/03/23) My fiance' and I decided to try the recently opened San Jose Mexican restaurant in Ballwin. We arrived about 8:00 that Saturday evening. There were only a handful of diners and seemed well staffed. The restaurant was previously the old Outback Steakhouse. Remodeling was limited but nice. I was hopeful, being a larger man, they would have replaced the fixed-table booths. Unfortunately they didn't and getting into and out of the booth was difficult because of the curved rail ends at the edge of the benches making you squeeze between the armrest and table. Just an annoyance. The real issues were the service and the bar. It took a bit but we finally were approached by a server who took our drink order. We ordered top-shelf margaritas, one with salt & one without salt. We also ordered guacamole. It took a bit but the drinks came to our table followed closely by the guac. Both drinks came with with salt and neither garnished with a lime, or anything else. The top shelf booze was great. However, someone forgot to train the bartender. (a key ingredient in a margarita is sour mix/lime juice? Apparently the bartender forgot this part. So, we asked our waiter for limes. After ten minutes we reminded him about the limes. He apologized and brought 2 slices (one for each I guess) and ran off. We asked again for extra limes and after some time brought a whole sliced lemon. I explained we wanted limes, not lemons, and he disappeared with the lemons. After another ten minutes we grabbed a passing manager/host type person and explained our problem, which he promptly corrected bringing a small bowl with six or so lime wedges. The guacamole was really delicious, as well as the chips and salsa brought to our table when we were seated. After we had our drinks we ordered. The Camarones & Scallops and she the Crab and Shrimp Enchiladas. The entrees came out quickly and looked beautiful. They were also delicious. Too bad the service was below par. It was good food. With an abundance of Mexican restaurants I'm not sure this will out shine the others or just be one of the pack. It's worth a try to see what you think. We've been there twice so far and had a good experience both times. The food was consistent both times. Not much to say other than it's a good place for mexican food. You've been to mexican restaurants in STL before, well this place is on the better side of what you normally get. The service is good, drinks are refilled promptly, you get asked if things are alright several times. The food comes out quickly enough. Both times we went it was busy but not super busy and the kitchen still had our food out in a good amount of time. I recommend the enchiladas and the fajitas came out nice and hot. No photos taken. TLDR: Very poor service and undercooked food. Where do i start? After we were seated right away the server took our initial drink orders. We asked for water so we could peruse the beverage options. We were going to get margaritas, but she never followed up. After ten minutes i had to get up and find a server to ask for chips and salsa. We had to ask... in a mexican restaurant! You see where this is going? We ordered four meals and when they came out two of them were completely wrong. The "fried chicken burrito" was filled with shredded chicken. We sent one meal back because the rice was crispy -- under cooked! At no time did a manager or shift try to talk to us about it. This was at 2pm on a Thursday and there weren't many tables to attend to but they managed to screw things up majorly. Oh, and they never came back to get our margarita order. Food was woefully undercooked and orders were not correct. Plates had to be redone. Staff seemed deeply inconvenienced by patrons, if not even a bit hostile.. Had to ask for chips and salsa. We were never asked if we wanted drink refills, or if anyone needed anything more. I ended up with nothing at all, since my order was inedible. I would have ordered a margarita but once they finally dropped some of the orders we saw no one til we had to ask for the check. Water was refreshing though. read more

I love this place! The Chimichanga is my favorite. And the pork in the dishes here is So good I could eat it on it's own. (And I'm not usually a big meat person). First time to visit this little jewel!!! Right out of my car doorI was sent back to my first visit to San Jose, Mexico!!! The music was blaring and the day was hot! We were greeted as we entered the restaurant by to men that were smiling as if they had just heard a joke!! In turn we were smiling back at them!!! These smiles never left they faces!! One of these guys happened to be our server the whole visit!! The restaurant could not have been cleaner....nor the service could not have been better!! We never seen the bottom of the chip basket or the salsa bowl. Our meals came in adequate amount of time (before filling up on chips!)!!! Of and to tell you about the margaritas.......yummy yummy yummy!!!......They offer skinny margaritas and wowza it is delicious!!! My lunch date had a delicious regular margarita and I did not feel I missed a calorie at all!!! The meals were as tasty at home reheated as it was there fresh from the kitchen!! I have told seven people about my experience and they all agree on this restaurant as they too have had great experiences when visiting this store!!! read more
