We were at the sandwich taverna, we have a few times and had nice lunches. However 2 days ago that was not the case. The waitress was great but the meal was not. The meal was lukewarm and unpalatable. Then my husband went into the bathroom paper towels over flowing and not very clean, we left after that. Had lunch there today. Started with the chicken and corn chowder; was really good. On Tuesdays they do "half off" a large portion of their menu. I see this as a push to get people to try different things other than the staples that aren't discounted (like burgers and pizza.) Followed that up with the cape cod Ruben. It was cod, cranberry sauce, coleslaw, Swiss, on rye. I was surprised by how big the piece of fish was, and it was prepared really well. Came with some pickles and fries. Ultimately I was quite satisfied, especially as both of those items were discounted, so it ended up being pretty cheap. My two qualms that keep me from giving it a 5 are the following: I feel like my waitress could of been a bit more attentive. She wasn't awful or anything. But I was not particularly impressed. Secondly, my soup and sandwich were brought to me at the same time, when I specifically asked to start with the soup. I won't claim to know "who's fault" it was. Wasn't a huge deal. Well, the "fresh bread" Was more like a toasted hot dog roll with oregano on it. It came without butter, but some weird sauce I thought better not to try. The place looked southwest, so I would assume Mexican fare, but it was American with pizzas and burgers on the menu. Ordered a $12 bacon cheeseburger, it was good. Wow, what a hoppin' country place in Sandwich. As we sat tonight, they were setting up the mechanical bull and looking for people to give it a ride. We actually got here kind of late at 7:30, with no one here and watched the place completely fill in the next hour and a half as they got it all together. I know I need to talk about the food, which was truly truly outstanding. I had the pork chops with just the BBQ sauce they make here, just really amazing. Rebecca chose the Baja pork chops and they were also just completely amazing, I was able to have a quick taste between the two and just could not believe how perfect both were. Ok, so the pork chops had mashed potatoes, mine actually with double. They were perfect, just outstanding. This was really a great spot, comes at you with a complete shock and will hopefully stay for a long time in the memory here, will have to get back soon! read more

It started out so promising for our group of 8 on a quiet night in the off-season. The waitress even asked if the child in our party wanted her food right away-- a wise move we all remarked was the sign of experience. But then things went downhill fast. It took FOREVER for the food to come out. We never once complained. The waitress came to apologize and we said OK. We waited another 30 minutes with no food before the manager came over to apologize as well. By this time the delay was so outrageous that we said a complimentary round of drinks would be appreciated as we continued to wait, but the manager said he wasn't "authorized" to do that. We had come to an almost empty establishment at 7:15 on a Saturday. We had a simple order. Just main courses, no salads or appetizers-- and it was well after 9:00 by the time we got our food. We were so disgusted by the poor service that we rushed through it and left. I don't even remember if it tasted good. Any good restaurant that wants to bring people back after a terrible experience would HEAVILY discount the tab, or offer a complimentary something. But Taverna showed their "apology" was not backed up by deeds. I can't imagine the circumstances that would cause us to go back there. read more

The food is delicious. Love the fried pickles. We go every weekend. The staff is always very friendly.

We order a lot in town. Generally very satisfied. The last few times we have ordered from the Taverna have been very disappointing. This time it was so bad, we tried to get an adjustment from the manager. No luck, and he has to be one of the rudest restaurant people in Sandwich. We ordered three chilis, a sandwich and two steak and blue cheese salads. The chilis were inedible. Tasted like you were eating a box of salt. Obviously the chili was geared to get the football crowd to drink more beer. I am not sure even a beer would have offset the salt in the chili. The sandwich was okay, not tremendous, but not a problem either. The steak in the salads were ordered medium. In most books, medium is at least a bit pink. These were cooked through. Definitely overcooked. Could have lived with that if the the steak could have been chewed. The steak was too tough to chew. I would give the restaurant no stars if allowed. There are MANY better choices in town for locals and visitors. As for the manager, he should get out of the hospitality business. read more

A great local place with lots of American flair. Know what you're ordering though, and don't sit by the door. Simply fantastic pancetta mac'n'cheese. Simply terrible calamari. A very lovely Southwestern salad that doesn't seem all too southwestern, actually. I'm also a fan of their pulled pork sandwich, as well as their clam chowder. About that pancetta mac'n'cheese though... perfectly cooked pasta mixed with a marvelous blend of cheeses in a perfectly creamy sauce tossed with tender, flavourful pancetta. It was absolutely delightful, and so unexpected from a place like this! The calamari - definitely frozen. Definitely rubber-like. Definitely a NEVER order. Even the marinara couldn't save it. No sauce could. The bar scene is great and they often have live music/DJ/karaoke. They typically have a seasonal Cape Cod Beer on tap too which is awesome! Sandwich is kind of a sleepy little place and it's hard to find much nightlife, so this is a wicked plus. We've never had AMAZING waitstaff, but never had TERRIBLE waitstaff either. Did you know that long, long ago this used to be a country bar and dance hall? Yes, sir. Now it is a great restaurant with really good food. I'm not sure how to categorize it because it is very family-friendly, it has tons of tv's for sports, it has a great big bar, and I've been told it has occasional karaoke (which I avoid like the plague.) Went there on my anniversary, happened to be their half off night. Waitress was nice, but she had tables across the whole restaurant. Needless to say she was running around between the 4 tables across the restaurant we were neglected. She offered rolls and didn't bring any for about 20 minutes, until I had to stop her in her tracks to remind her because my daughter started being fussy. She apologized and promptly brought some over. We ordered food and I heard the table next to us had been informed the ribs were out and our waitress never told us anything. 30 minutes after we ordered, this "guy" came over and said "who ordered the ribs?" I said "does it matter?" He said"yeah it does" and throws a menu on the table and said "we are out, you gotta choose something else." I said "the table next to us had been informed 25 minutes ago, why didn't anyone inform us sooner?" He replied in an inpatient tone, "it's half off today, we are busy, just order something else." I said "it's not acceptable, I'll pay for what I had and give me my check please." He said "OK!" And runs off to a computer. He comes back in a few minutes and said he had taken care of the bill. We had zero balance and have a nice day. Didn't look at me in the eye and apologize for being slow with service, talked to me like I wanted to eat a few meal. Comes to find out he's the manager. If you can't handle half off nights then don't have any. I wasn't there for a free meal, I was there because my wife likes the ribs. How do you run out of ribs at 6:00? Did you forget you guys do half off Tuesdays? All I wanted was an apology, you offered none. You blamed your lack of preparedness on half off night? Bad experience with the manager. Arrived at 5:45 with a party of eight. One of our party ordered a steak rare and it arrived well done. This person rarely (if ever) sends food back so it had to be very over cooked. The wait staff checked on the table and was told the steak was well done. She apologized and a hamburger was ordered instead. The manager then comes to the table and proclaimed the steak was fine and proceeded to use the knife and fork of the customer to slice into the steak and once again proclaim it was fine. It was not. The table next to us had the same situation with a steak ordered rare that came well done but he was too embarrassed to complain after what our table experienced. I feel sorry for the waitstaff. They work very hard with no support from management. We are locals and will not go back. read more

A friend and I recently went to lunch at the Taverna and were excited to be there because Covid had kept us away. The new menu was very extensive and everything looked good but one thing caught our attention and we both ordered the chicken gyro at 14.99. What we received was a rollup with lettuce, tomato, feta and sauce but not chicken. It was a cold rollup on flat bread and not a gyro. The waitress went back to the kitchen with them and they added the chicken. I explained to her that a gyro is a hot sandwich on pita bread and what they list as a gyro is a rollup not a gyro. Now, the owner is Greek and you would think he would know the difference. I have ordered gyros in numerous restaurants and have gotten exactly what I ordered. I have been to Greece and know what a GYRO is. FYI to the owner-please either correct your menu listing as a chicken rollup or offer a REAL GYRO the way it's supposed to be served. Spent Thanksgiving up in Cape Cod, spent the Friday after walking around Chatham and decided to get some grub on the way home. We got here about 3PM on Friday, so there was only one table seated, bar was 80% full. May be best to take it area by area then by entree. Service - nice lady named Jeanne - no complaints. The beers never hit empty because she was on her game. Polite banter, and the food came out in a timely fashion, so the kitchen did it's thing as far as service goes as well. Beer - cold and delicious, good selection. I'd come here for the beer again. Atmosphere - what I would want a bar to be. Alot of wood, random stuff on the walls, great vibe. And if you're inclined to sit for some food, there are alot of booths. Also had a popcorn machine, which was a cool touch. Cost - right where I expected them to be, it's the off-season and they need to keep the lights on without over-doing it. Food - let's go by entree: Beef Soup - it was the soup of the day, I'm sure it had a catchier title, but I don't remember it. Brutal. Overkill on the bouillon or whatever they are using to make it. Tasted light and watery, with heavy bouillon. The soup never had a chance to thicken up slightly or get a taste of the beef. There were a couple unidentifiable pieces we hoped were beef. Girlfriend made it through about 1/4 of it. Garden Salad with Balsamic Glaze on the side - difficult to screw up a salad, but they managed it. Hard, dried out lettuce and cucumbers with a heavy balsamic syrup. Syrup remained untouched; we were able to eat the tomatoes. Pancetta Macaroni & Cheese - somehow worse than the above, and the saddest excuse for mac and cheese I've ever seen. It's mac and cheese folks - not hard. The pancetta was a notch above raw, the cheese sauce wasn't nearly thick enough, tasteless and room temperature to boot. I could have dealt with the Penne pasta choice if the rest wasn't so terrible. Fry up the pancetta so it browns up, thicken up the sauce, get some elbow macaroni (or another similar choice that's not gigantic) and place it in a crock with sometime in the oven so it browns up lightly. Need a cold beer in a cool atmosphere; this can be your place. Just don't eat. read more

Looking for a place to have a nice dinner, catch the game, hang with friends? Sandwich Taverna is that place. The décor is very strange. I kept looking around trying to figure out what they were thinking. They have military flags hanging along side old Western movie posters and other western inspired décor. Its quite a combination. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with a "hi kids!" it doesn't matter what age you are, although I thin when the host sat us down, he took away our wine/cocktail menu too. Oh, the dilemma of being young and looking young. But we weren't in the mood to drink anyway. Our server, "pretty boy" was great. He was attentive and on point throughout the night. Food here is decent. Menu has a lot of different types of food, so there is something for everyone. I was craving pasta and got the Italian meatballs which was good but its totally better the next day as leftovers. We have twice had the Wednesday dinner buffet and it has been the exact opposite of the intemperate rant below about the lunch buffet, although the buffet items were exactly the same. Eggplant parmigiana was excellent; lasagna was very authentic; sausage and peppers was as good as I've ever had at a restaurant; good meatballs, too. We went to the Taverna last night for 1/2 Burger Special on Thursdays. The burgers are terrific. Angus beef, cooked just like we ordered and lots of combinations. I had the Cowboy Burger with sautéed onions, bacon, mushrooms and cheese on a super roll. My wife had the Blue Moon with blue cheese, sautéed onions and mushrooms. Fries were included. We shared a Greek salad that was also very nice. Our server (Gabby) was very friendly and a great server. All in all we really enjoyed the night but I had to take a star way from my rating because it was uncomfortably hot in the restaurant. The sign on the door should have been our clue. It read that they we open however they had closed all the curtains to keep the sun from heating the place up. In spite of the fact that they knew how hot it was outside, the ceiling fans were all turned off and no air conditioning could be felt. Next time we try a cooler night and I keep you posted. read more

Stopped in last Friday for an early dinnertime beer. Not many customers, but fast, friendly service at the bar. In total had two brands of domestic beer @ $5, about normal for upscale bars in the area. But with the beer came a free appetizer---four stuffed potatoes in my case, and they were great! The free bites are available only late afternoons, but made this a bargain of a deal. I do fault the bar for not having a newspaper subscription as do its competitors nearby, but the menu almost made up for it since not a single page is spell-checked and some of the blunders are hilarious. read more

Some of the other reviews on here are quite intimidating as far as people not having a good experience...I've never had anything but beer and pizza here, which is probably a hard thing to screw up. I've been here three times, once was a night out with friends, another was with my husband, children, and another family, and just recently my husband and I came here some beers and to watch the Pats playoff game. Other than the shocking price for the beers ($15 bucks for two beers?!?!?) we had a good time. I'm not sure what is to be expected as far as atmosphere, it's style is kind of all over the place - surf boards, drumsets, a t-shirt hanging from the ceiling, and some western stuff - but whatever. This is a tough one to write. The staff were friendly, the prices were fair, the food was good (not great, but good), but it took so long for our food to come out. We were with a large group and most of us ordered burgers and it took an hour before they served us. How long does it take to cooks a burger?
