Wow I ordered the beef teriyaki plate. The price has gone up not surprising. What surprised me was the smallest amount of beef I have ever gotten from there. This is probably our favorite fast sushi. The restaurant can only hold about 20 customers but has seating outside. The fish is always fresh and their rolls are big. Try the Huntington Beach roll; it is a bit spicy but amazing. They are very nice there. read more

Declining quality and inconsistent recipes. Sango used to be much better, but that was years ago. Sushi rolls prepared one way will be different the next. E.g. Philadelphia roll with sesame seeds or not, nori or not, radish or not depending on the day (or not). Fish quality is sketchy even for the decent prices charged. I had ordered a combination plate with beef teriyaki and tempura. I noticed the tempura was soggy which is an indication of improper temperature and old oil. The beef teriyaki was half the amount I would typically get but it is the same flavor which was yummy. It was a great value! I had the chicken teriyaki and tempura meal. Some of the parts of the meal kind of needed some more flavor. Overall, my experience will bring me back here again. The chicken teriyaki was definitely full of flavor and super tender. The rice that came with the meal was splendid. The people serving at the restaurant were willing and happy to help. The only part of the meal that lacked a bit of taste was the salad. It was all ice berg lettuce so it tasted only of water. Maybe the use of a darker lettuce would remedy this. I have eaten here for YEARS. My office is right around the corner and while this is a 'budget' place, I have always found it a good value. Today I went and placed my usual order, the tuna was clearly 'past it's prime' -it was sour. I was bummed, and took it back. I had experienced this once or twice with them, but always just moved on. By the time I got back there this day, the sushi had little bubbles on it so it was clearly no good. No question - anyone that would eat that gonna get sick. probably really sick. At that point, I wasn't really feeling like sushi anymore (I ate that one sour piece....) so I thought tempura might be a good easy exchange for them ($3 tempura for $7 sushi). I was surprised when the girl behind the counter said she could not help me; that she wasn't sure I actually bought the sushi from them (I was there just 50 minutes earlier, btw!). I pointed out that the sushi container was identical to the containers they use. Coincidental yes, but that would not suffice for her. I showed her my phone history, with a call to their restaurant 50 minutes earlier (a call that last 3 minutes 11 seconds, btw). That would not suffice for her. I asked her to look at her credit card receipts - she said they had already "been taken away". I was so surprised, so disappointed. I pleaded but they made it clear what my business means to them. I checked my credit card history......In 9 years I've spent $15,233.21 there. Bummer for all. UPDATE: Two days later I am thankful that I only ate that one piece, and [attempted to] return the rest. Neighborhood sushi take out place that's pretty affordable. Service is slow, slow to order and slow to pick up. I think we waited 45 mins for our pick up order. My husband and I ordered spicy tuna rice bowl, chicken rice bowl, eel hand roll, yellowtail sashimi, tuna sushi rolls, crunch roll. I'd pass on the eel hand roll, tuna sushi roll, and crunch roll in the future. Instead of the spicy tuna bowl, they gave us poke bowl instead. Stopped ordering chicken teriyaki bowl, quality of chicken seems to get worse. Fake grill lines on chicken not very appetizing. Friend picked up California, super crunchy and scallop hand roll. I have to say, I tend to be a sushi snob. I also have to say, Yay! I'm a Fan of Sango Sushi. Roomie's Handsome Male Offspring likes to grub here. I've never even really considered it. I wanted something different for dinner tonight. I read reviews and figured, why not. It's so close to the house, I must try it. Like everyone says, it is very small and gets crowded very quickly. There is a neat charm to the place. I did notice that tables did not get cleared quickly (or at all while I was there) but no one seemed to mind. They just sat down and pushed dirty dishes aside. OK by me, I was getting mine to go. I ordered the Sushi a la Carte, which consisted of 10 pieces of sushi: tuna, white fish, shrimp, salmon, yellow tail, squid, octopus, fresh water eel, albacore and masago. Since I'm not a big fan of eel, I asked if I could substitute for an extra Hamachi. The girl taking my order asked, "Hamachi Yellow tail or Salmon?" This was my first..."OMG, did I do the right thing coming here?" moment!!! I took a breath and said, "Hamachi is Yellow tail." She nodded and told me it was no problem. I also ordered a Miso soup. The wait was about 10 minutes which I thought was totally reasonable. The same girl that took my order even brought it out to me while she was serving dine in tables. I thought that was really nice. Some people seemed to be put off by the "condiment bar" in their reviews. I liked it, thought it was well planed, well stocked and completely met my needs. I dug in when I got home. The Miso was wonderful! Sadly, I've had bad Miso, believe it or not. This was warm, tasty and had nice, plentiful chunks of tofu in it. Now to the sushi. I have to say I was really, really impressed. The octopus was not tough or rubbery and the squid was pretty decent. A little tough but not bad at all. The albacore and Masago were SO yummy! Hamachi was really good as well as the salmon and tuna. Overall, this healthy, filling wonderful meal cost me $15. For sushi you say? Good sushi? Yes...for GOOD sushi. Is it SlowFish Good? No. But let me tell you, it is awesome for the price, convenience, service and speedy service. My only complaint? It was HOT AS BALLS in that place! I thought I was going to DIE! I'd never be able to eat inside in that heat. Luckily you can dine outside in the courtyard if you choose to eat in and take in the cool ocean breeze. WARNING! Steer clear of their raw sushi! I ordered the chirashi bowl, which contained some extremely chewy octopus and funky tasting fish. Luckily, the condiment bar had a great selection of flavor maskers, like Sriracha, ponzu and soy sauce. I know I shouldn't expect great quality fish at a fast food kind of sushi joint, but the fish was pretty bad and I've had much better fish at other similar joints. The bowl was about $9. Their chicken katsu curry was pretty decent and they gave a really large portion for only like $6. The flavors were subtle, but good. The sauce was thick, with lots of carrots and potato. What really got me excited about this place was my coworkers beef curry udon. Holy crap, I only had a bite of her broth, but it was amazing! They give some hot pepper seasoning, which tasted delicious in the soup. If I come back, I'll definitely order this! Prices are really reasonable and for the most part, the food is pretty good...but being that its a sushi joint...the sushi kinda sucks.... Definitely try that udon if you make a trip! read more

I have been coming here for years and for a "fast food" sushi place, I have never had any problems with their food ever. Their prices seem reasonable compared to other places that I have been to and there service has always been with a smile. I don't know what it is about their California Rolls but no matter where I go, the comparison always goes back to Sango and no one has ever been as good. I realize that is a pretty basic roll to base things off of, but I have always enjoyed it. The few other rolls that I have tried, crunchy, tuna, dynamite and a few others that I forget the names of, have always been good. Their chicken bowls are of the standard fare and if I ever want something other than sushi, I usually get their teriyaki chicken tempura plate which I have always liked. They are usually pretty busy and their dining area is rather small. They are a strip mall sushi place and I am not expecting a full blown dining area but it can get a little cramped with people waiting around for their food which can be a little awkward. Just pick it up and take it to the seats right outside the door in the courtyard. No big deal. I enjoy this place and will continue to visit them as often as possible. read more

Solid little Japanese Restaurant in HB. I've been here several times and have found the food to be very good quality and it's not too expensive. The sushi is great but I usually tend to go with some of there more Japanese centric offerings such as the chicken-katsu curry, gyoza, or tempura dishes. The tonkatsu (pork) is traditional Japanese and very good. I've ordered many of the plates and have yet to be disappointed. Its amazing for what it is -- basically fast food sushi. --Keep that in mind when reading my review below-- IMO, this place does sushi better than 2/3 of all sushi RESTAURANTS in OC. The fact that it is a small fast food restaurant makes it all the better. Some of the other posters are saying the tempura is good. I've never tried it, but imo you could deep fry a sock and it will taste good - so thats irrelevant imo. I'll speak from experience, and the salmon sushi here with ponzu rivals most restaurants in the area. I'm not kidding. I eat sushi 2-3x a week from all over the place. If you have a sushi craving, and are low on cash, or just want to REALLY pig out, I can't recommend this place enough. This is the place to go if you are looking for good relatively inexpensive sushi. It's not great and the ambiance is lacking, but it will fill your sushi cravings. Good tip: Get the sashimi platter and swap out the octopus for tuna. They don't charge extra....and who eats octopus anyways? One random note: If you order a handroll, the seaweed comes wrapped in plastic. I can never get the handroll in the right shape and am always stuck with a burrito version. read more

My sister and her friends often hit up Sango for lunch after school, and being the wonderful chauffeur that I usually am, I drove them to get their sushi fix one afternoon. I'll admit that I don't really eat sashimi or the "real" sushi, and I'm quite naive when it comes to sushi, but if you can't get a crunchy roll right, there must be something wrong. I ordered a crunchy roll at the advice of my sister's friend and a helping of the gyoza as a little appetizer. From the way I've always seen my crunchy rolls, they tend to come in the form of California rolls with shrimp tempura + little tempura bits sprinkled on top with ponzu sauce drizzled all over them. Here, the crunchy rolls were California rolls minus the crab with soggy shrimp tempura drenched in runny liquid. The gzoya was definitely not memorable with its mystery meat filling, all accompanied by its Kikkoman-tasting "sauce" (it was seriously soy sauce, no doubt about it). I don't expect to be returning here on my own accord anytime soon. I rather hit up Sushi Gesshin in the Pavillion Center (where Target is) for some great calamari salad and crunchy rolls. Great place to grab lunch. Fresh sushi for a great value. Their super generous with their portions when you order combination platters or bowls. If you work in the area like I do, you can phone in your order for pick up. I haven't ate there in person but every time I pick up food, there is always a table available and service looks somewhat decent. The main reason why I gave 3 stars was because their customer service is either a hit or a miss. On some days, they can be the most friendliest people ever. On other days... Let's just say you know they don't wanna be here and don't care if you ordered ahead of time for pick up. My work place is in los alamitos and there's a sango sushi there. Their sushi is very good with a fairly descent price. However this place in HB isn't what I expected to be, I came in and I didn't get greeted at all. Food was descent too but it seems to me they're missing a few items on the menu compare to los alamitos? I could be wrong because I don't see their yakisoba shrimp on the menu.
