I am so disappointed. This Sango location was sold by the original owners (who still run Sango restaurants in Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach). The current restaurant has improved its interior substantially, the menu looks nicer, but the music is awful and it no longer has that "hole in the wall" feel. Some major cost-cutting seems to have taken place. I ordered the chirashi sushi as usual and it was a blow to the gut. The poor quality of the fish, the poor cutting of the fish, and especially the cheaper rice they've apparently switched to just ruined it for me. The rainbow roll, another favorite, seemed strangely vinegar-y and salty, and the rolls weren't put together very well, falling apart in midair. I'm done, I'm not coming back. :( read more

Wedged between Kasra Grill restaurant and CVS Pharmacy is Sango Sushi. This place reminds me of Golden Dragon restaurant in the same shopping center; fast food place and it's always better to-go. Order and pay at the counter first; then you are handed a number for your table. Menu is all over the place which seems disorganized. The drink dispenser has the usual soft drinks and the straws are on the right side of the machine. If any chairs were vacant, the tables weren't because the empty plates and cups were silently awaiting attention that came nearly 15-20 minutes later. I noticed when tables were attended to that the employees had just eaten their lunch from the surrounding tables. Soy paper is available for your sushi rolls. Not sure if the sushi was fresh but everything tasted okay. The employee picking up my empty plate was in good spirits and chuckled with me as I mentioned my mess. THIS NEW OWNER HAS KILLED MY CHILDHOOD. Sango used to be a family favorite for the past 14 years, that changed after today. When I first walked in, I immediately noticed the refresh of the decor. It was a pleasant change, except for the frikkin yodelling music in the background. The choice in music is as confused as the rest of the changes the new owner has implemented. Upon ordering, I was bombarded by the completely unjustified price increases. You used to get a combination plate of chicken teriyaki and tempora for around 6 bucks and leave feeling very full with the warm fuzzy feeling that good food leaves with you. Now you have to pay over 9 dollars to feel hungry, disapppinted, and the feeling you have when daddy tells that your dog ran away to a butterfly farm. The food itself was plain and boring. They switched from dark meat to white meat, which looked as flat as it tasted. The tempora tasted like premade frozen garbage, but the sushi was passable. In conclusion, in order to change this 1 star into 5 again, go back to the old menu, old prices, and old recipes. The music also needs to not distract me from my meal, even if it tastes like nothing. It's an utter shame that a once brilliant hidden gem of OC is turned into a horrible experience that makes me long for what used to be. read more

The customer service though was garbage, the cashier looked new and was extremely rude, I also caught him staring at me and my girlfriend multiple times. Not impressed. In fact, not good at all. I love sushi, so maybe my standards are too high, but there are many better sushi choices just down the street from this place. (Zen or Anjou Bistro for example) The place was dead inside at lunch time. That should have been clue number one. The Albacore sashimi was not tender, and had a fishy taste. OK, I know it's fish, but really good sushi doesn't have that taste. Go try the Albacore sashimi at Zen and comapre it to Sango's. It's not even close. Zen almost melts in your mouth, and has a buttery flavor. Sango's was chewy and bland. The rolls were slightly better, but not much. I ordered a crunchy roll, and the rice again was chewy, and the roll had very little flavor. If I hadn't covered it in the sauce, I don't know if I would have eaten it at all. For one order of sashimi and one roll I spent $12, and that was with a 10% off coupon. That's a decent price compared to other places, but the quality is so sub-par I wouldn't pay it again. In fact, I'm not entirely convinced I'd eat it again even if it were free. I really question how fresh the fish is, and that's something you should never do when eating raw fish. You need to be confident it is as fresh as possible and of the highest grade, or else you could get sick. That's just not the case here. I'll happily pay a little more for top quality at Zen or Bistro Anjou every day of the week before I come back here again. read more

The bowl was definitely worth $5-if not more! Came with decently sized pieces of salmon, diced tomatoes, chunks of avocado, some greens (micro greens I think), and a side of pickled ginger. The whole bowl was topped off with a light, sweet, soy sauce-based sauce. Sauce was good, but maybe a little too much sauce. I was parched after I ate the bowl. I ate every bit of, though. This is my Sunday lunch place. I usually order ahead and pick up since they open around noon on Sunday and it is already crowded. So i suggest calling in your order then drive in and just pick up. If not you will probably have to wait about 10 minutes to order and another 15-20 for food. Save that time and do it ahead of time. In regards to the food, i usually get the salmon Sango and tempura combo which is around $7. It comes with a salad, rice, and steamed vegetables. You can't be this kind of lunch for this price and quality anywhere. I also will suggest the spicy tuna bowl for you sushi lovers. It's under $7 and you get lots of spicy tuna chopped on top of rice. You can add your own condiments of wasabi, green onions, and soy sauce for the perfect blend. Overall, I highly suggest this place for quality and value for Japanese food. Ah Sango sushi, how you have been well to me all these years. For as long as I can remember, Sango Sushi has been a staple for my brother and I since in Junior High. Whenever we need our quick sushi fix, it delivers wonderfully. At less than 5 minutes away from our house, why not go and have fresh and inexpensive sushi? I normally get the chirashi sushi, which means mixed sushi, bowl. It wonderfully hits the spot with fresh pieces of salmon, tuna, squid, octopus, tamago, and other mixed veggies. The price cannot be beat either, for less than $8 dollars. The staff is always helpful and friendly and always welcome you with a smile. The great thing is I can order on the phone and pick up my meal in less than 15 minutes. read more

New ownership in the last year with updates to the interior and the menu. I was worried that some of our favorite classics would change, but I was delighted to find that, if anything, they've gotten better. They have more options for sushi and a pretty good happy hour special after 7:30pm. Also, VERY IMPORTANTLY, I am picky about my order and they always take extra care to ensure they make my order extra how I like it. I can't praise them enough for that effort. We have been going to Sango since it opened and we have no plans of slowing down now. With some of the new menu options, we will be going even more frequently. Definitely recommend. read more

Being Japanese American, in addition to home cooking, I grew up eating at a fair amount of Japanese restaurants around southern CA. However, while living in south OC most of my life, good authentic Japanese food was pretty much non-existent around here. I'd say you'd use to have to go out towards Costa Mesa and the south bay for good Japanese food (in general, it's still that way). But that changed when Sango opened up. For the south OC area, this is probably the ONLY place I'll choose to go to for good, reasonably priced Japanese food. I laughed when someone else's review said they were disappointed in this place since it wouldn't be somewhere they'd go to for a date (that'd be like me taking a girl to In-N-Out: you go for the great food, not the ambience).... or when another person was comparing this place to other sushi BARS around here claiming they have 'high standards' for sushi -- just makes you sound like a wannabe elitist. Besides, Japanese food isn't just all about the sushi... that'd be like saying good American food is nothing but a tasty burger. If you want to pay $30+ a person for the 'real' experience/atmosphere around here, go to Shin Sushi in Mission Viejo.. their fish quality is excellent and the sushi is made how it's supposed to be made - simple and fresh. Rather, Sango is a reliable, friendly, casual, reasonably priced, order-at-the-counter, eat-in or take-out Japanese joint with a relatively extensive menu. If it were closer to my work, I'd find myself going here a lot for lunch. read more

It's good for what it is, especially in South O.C. This place is always busy, lunch and dinner time, both. They really don't have any other competition nearby for the kind of food they serve so that must be the reason. I must say...their food is very reasonably priced for a location (LN) notorious for high rent. I like their daily 10% off lunch special. They have it posted waaay in the back corner behind the sushi counter so you can easily miss it if you don't pay attention to it (especially because their menu display is quite extensive and you get kind of dizzy when you go there for the first time...well, I still get dizzy so it doesn't have to be just the first time, maybe). Their rolls are hit or miss. If you see a little Japanese guy working behind the sushi counter, then you will get a better sushi. ;) I like their curry rice. It is enough for two meals so I order it for lunch, eat half of it and take the other half for dinner. I love the big piece of broccoli they serve it with the curry although it is not at all authentic way of eating curry in Japan. It's a nice "Hashi-yasume". I've had their Katsu curry once and while they were pretty good, I've NEVER seen Katsu SOOOO thin! They must pound the meat until it's dead (literally) before they cook it! :D I would give them 3.5 stars if there was a 1/2 star option. ****Updates**** I'm growing to like this place more now. For one, most of the employees recognize me when I walk in (which is always a nice feeling) and give me friendly smiles or a shout of "Irasshai-mase!". :) I am now a big fan of their vegetable roll and california roll. I also enjoy the fact (for a restaurant of their caliber) that they offer a monthly special menu. It's surprising to find this kind of variation at a semi-fast food type restaurant. This is a small, nice, causal restaurant that serves excellent sushi. I think that this restaurant recently or somewhat recently had a renovation because the last time I have been to the restaurant, there were new floors, and the look of the menu was also updated too. Some of my favorite items to get from this restaurant would be the California roll, the chicken bowl, and also the tempura. The California roll tastes really fresh and I can tell, just by taste, that it is handmade. The chicken bowl is also quite tasty and the price for the amount of food received in the chicken bowl is certainly reasonable. The tempura tastes really excellent. The food served in this restaurant, if one chooses to dine-in at this restaurant, is served in nice plates and bowls and such and that is certainly an elegant touch. The staff at this restaurant are really friendly. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for tasty and filling Japanese food. read more

God I miss Sango. I am giving it 5 stars mostly for nostalgia. When I started coming here when it first opened, my parents thought it was going to close. No one was ever in here despite it's $4 katsu plate, and now Sango's still going 15 years later. Now that I live in LA, I miss places like this where you could get decent quality well prepared Japanese food for less than $10 a person including a drink or an appetizer. And it's not bad, it's actually pretty decent and can't be beat for the price. I've never even gotten sick here, and real Japanese people own it (sorry Korean owned Japanese places but you know what I mean). There's lots of wanna-be Sango's taunting you with bento boxes for $7 but most of them suck, whereas I attack Sango's with disposable chopstick fervor. I used to get sushi platters here for birthdays, Super Bowls, and other events. Service was always nice and they used to recognize my parents and I. Just about everything is well prepared. I usually get a spicy tuna roll, or any of the sushi is good for the price (it isn't Urasawa), even the taboo California roll is good and believe it or not those can be messed up (ever get Costco sushi? don't do it), and any of the combination platters or bento boxes. Curries and the soba noodles I remember being average and not worth it, but the udon with tempura on the side was more than adequate. I need to find a replacement in the SGV where I can get my Japanese fix for less than $20. Grrr. read more

Efficient, pleasant and my go-to place for good sushi served up by japanese folks who know their stuff. Being a 3rd generation Japanese-American, there's something comforting about a japanese restaurant's staff knowing their food and how to prepare and serve it. Not that places that have rolls with hot sauce and cream cheese aren't good, I just have been around the stuff all my life and can spot an authentic sushi roll or japanese dish. I go here for lunch every 2 weeks or so. I only have an hour and they always deliver on time, right on! How could a working girl not love this? Last night my boyfriend and I got both the chirashi bento and the small sushi plate. Whoa. That was plenty for the both of us, and he can EAT! Lots of tuna, mackeral, salmon, clam, egg, cukes, shiitake, octopus, yellowtail for the both of us. The chirashi comes with a bottom of the bento box filled with rice for you to enjoy with the sashimi. It was nice to sip some hot green tea with it, too. I like going to this place for ordering take-out sushi. There is indoor seating but I find somewhat limited because it can get crowded. But I didn't care since it is minutes away from home. I ordered one of the sushi combo and an order of California roll for me and my wife. The quality was pretty good and was full meal for us. If you went to ANHS and you wanted some sushi ASAP youd roll to sangos. Thats one thing this place has got going for it, its the closest place to find some legitimate sushi that I can think of. Other than that, its a pretty average sushi place. Its like teh purgatory of sushi...not good but not bad. On the raw fish freshness scale, I'd give it a 7 on a 1-10. But they do make up for it by being fast at what they do and giving you a good amount. I don't normally like Japanese food and I don't eat sushi, but my son spent several years in Japan and he took me there. They have some delicious dishes! I really enjoy their beef teriyaki and chicken katsu dinners. The amount of food you get for the price is surprising, and sometimes I can't finish it all. Sango Sushi is a real hidden gem. All the staff are really friendly and I've even gotten to know some of them on a first name basis. I'd give Sango 8 stars if possible. read more

The Bad: Not a lot of options for rolls beyond the standard choices, California rolls are made with shredded imitation crab with mayo- I prefer chunks of crab not mixed with mayo in my California rolls. I have stop by this location on a couple occasions. The first time they were slow so the food came out pretty quickly, it was tasty, and priced on a little bit of the higher side for sushi with a semi fast food atmosphere The second time I came in, it took over 30 minutes for the food to come out, which was not a lot of food. After bringing it up to the person working there, they apologized and gave me an additional roll Overall the quality of the fish is decent. The cuts are average, the service has been lacking. I live close by this place, so I absolutely love this place and visit often (when I need my Japanese food fill! I order the Sesame Chicken with double rice (as much as the salad because it is SUPER yummy, I love the double white rice more - you really NEED to try the Sesame Chicken at least one, you will NOT be disappointed). This place has a lot on the menu, so I suggest checking it on the on the website (www.sangosushi.com) to see all that they have and come prepared to order! Yes, it gets busy during lunch/dinner times, so don't expect to be catered on to the fullest of their potential. It is a small place (in Laguna Niguel) so don't come with the expectation of the 'perfect' atmosphere. There is no sushi bar and there is limited seating (but the staff is really friendly and I love that they remember me and my orders), regardless, it is still an awesome place to eat at once you find your 'regular/main' order (which usually I am more than happy to have ordered and ready 'to-go' and eat at home). The Chicken Teriyaki bowl is really good as well, and I order that 'to-go' when I want something fast. The miso soup is ALWAYS awesome and I order it with whatever I order. read more

Sango is now under new management...I thought it might have closed since the Laguna Niguel location was taken off the website, but they are still there. They completely re-did the inside, but the menu is basically the same. My rating has dropped a star because of a few visits where the portions were unbelievable small. My brother ordered a beef teriyaki combo, and there were five extremely small slivers of meat. Granted, they are cheap, but compared to a year ago, it's definitely disappointing. read more

This is a second hand review. We got a ton of food here for takeout this last weekend for my wife, her sister and Dad. They all love sushi. Me, not so much, but sometimes you just have to let other people pick. Anyway, when it comes to sushi, I go Teriyaki meat. So in those respects, this place gets 2 stars. The Teriyaki Rib Eye was crappy. The piece of meat was wafer thin, overcooked, under seasoned, etc. The shrimp tempura was ok but that is hard to F up anyway. We also had an order of the chicken dumplings (Goyza?) that weren't bad. Anyway, the rest of the family got about 5-7 rolls and several orders of tuna and salmon sashimi. They all enjoyed the sushi. Very fresh, tasted good, etc. So if you're looking for good sushi and bad teriyaki in South OC, try this place. read more

So the biggest disappointment with my experience at the sushi restaurant is the fact that they had no consideration for my time. I popped in between appointments since I have an extra 15 minutes thinking I would enjoy some sushi sushi roll on the go for lunch. I came in quickly ordered my California roll process took like 2 minutes and then proceeded to wait for 10 minutes while I watch the chefs joke back and forth with each other and pull out supplies. At that point the clock was running tight for me and I asked the cashier behind the counter, " they are making my role right?" his response was will actually we just open the restaurant so they're going to get started on it right now after they're done unloading all of the supplies. My thought is that if a customer orders something then you stop what you're doing and you make their dish so that they can go especially when it's a to-go order. So I spent my break waiting in a restaurant for a quick to go meal that they never even started to make. read more
