A perfect place to feed kiddos a quick meal that isn't fast food. Food came out quick, fast and tasty and the food was on par with any other restaurant that you order at the counter and they bring out to you. We got 2 Chicken Udon, a Beef Bowl, and a Spicy Shrimp Tempura and Avocado Roll. All of the food was good but the roll was falling apart when we got it and they weren't kidding when they said spicy. I think they added too much spicy sauce so the rice wasn't sticky anymore. The reason for the average review was more around the rushed feeling we got when we were eating there last night. They close at 9:00 but at 8:45 they were already stacking chair on the tables. We got the hint when all the chairs were stacked on the tables except for the ones we were sitting on. I'm a regular customer and love the food, but recently please beware that the hostess may force your hand and add a 10% tip automatically herself for takeout orders upon paying. I have been eating at Sango Sushi for years and have eaten at all three of their locations in Los Alamitos, Laguna Niguel and Huntington Beach. While I have definitely eaten at the Los Alamitos location the most, I am reviewing the Laguna NIguel location because this is where my sushi party tray came from. While the restaurants are small and pretty informal, there menu is quite large and varied and they have very reasonable prices for their food. My usual favorites here are the Salmon Sango, which is a piece of salmon that is broiled with their Sango sauce which is mayonnaise-based on top, beef yakisoba, gyoza, tempura udon and hamachi sashimi. They have very good deals on their sushi party trays and party roll trays here also. They usually have a weekly special advertised in the restaurant also. The restaurants are pretty small so we usually end up ordering food to go here. The restaurants are casual, this is not a fancy place you take your date to impress. You order at a counter, more like eating at a sandwich shop not a sit-down restaurant, but for the price, I think you can get some pretty good Japanese food for your money. If you eat at restaurant, sake and Japanese beer are also available. read more

We were full from ordering a combo which included salmon, tuna and other sushi I either can't remember or were eaten by my better half; and an order of California rolls. Prices are reasonable, the sushi tastes freshly made. I don't have any comment on eating at the restaurant as I have never been inside it, but I liked the take out. I consider my sushi outings to be very sacred. So i get disappointed when I come across so so sushi. Can I just be real with you for a moment? This place is not that great! I dont know what it is, but south orange county really needs to up their sushi quality! The prices may be okay, but seriously, this really does feel like hole in the wall sushi place- and not the good kind. It is small, so you feel like you can listen in to other peoples conversations, therefore, leaving me with a mediocre dining experience. This is not a place where I would suggest bringing a date either. Sushi quality is equivalent to average AYCE sushi buffets like Todai. Blah... A friend suggested we come here. Apparently, she comes here all the time. It's a little spot and not somewhere I would go to normally. I wouldn't expect the food to be good but it wasn't bad! I liked that they had 3 riceless rolls on the menu for rather cheap. Like other spots though, the crab was imitation and there was far too much sauce, making it inedible. I love Sango. When I lived in AV, I used to order it every Friday for pick up to eat at home. Like Tony L. says: order ahead and save time. I live next to MV lake, so it's a bit of a drive to get to now =( It's good value at a great price. Personally, I really enjoy their eel bowl. It comes with a nice filet and white rice on the bottom. The eel sauce is delicious. I think the Philly roll has too much philly. I am not a fan. The California rolls and dynamite rolls are standard goodness. I love coming to Sango Sushi. It's close to my house and good sushi for reasonable prices. Their happy hour prices make it cheaper as well. It's super easy to place an order over the phone and come pick it up. They have a temperature scanning iPad, which I have no idea how it works but it's pretty cool. The sushi isn't going to be high end, but a good place to come to if you're looking for a cheap roll. The fish always tastes fresh and the rolls are delicious. I get annoyed at other sushi places where they make the rolls really tiny but Sango Sushi has kept their rolls at a consistent size. I grew up in this area and have been coming here for years and years!!! Since the new ownership took over (or remodel) prob. about 7 yrs ago or maybe more its been getting worse and worse...the quality of the food and the service suck!! It took them 45 mins. to make my order (6 rolls+1 katsu), when I placed the order there was only 2 people in front of me as I was waiting it started getting busy. I watched 3 people who ordered after me got there food before me...wt*!!! And that was the dine in with sushi, not the phone orders which there were a few, yes I am that observant (its my job) I know the business I am a Restaurant Operations Consultant (someone how analyzes your operations and then recommends strategic changes to make your business better, faster, stronger and more profitable) just in case your asking what that is...lol. And yes businesses usually pay me to write a "report" such as this. I used to work in a Sushi place for several years (been in the restaurant business for 19 yrs) I waited and watched thinking ok I see a couple of people get there orders who came in after me and each order after that I was thinking ok mines next. The guy making the sushi (short older guy, white hair I think hes Asian) was slow you would think that he would hurry a little because it was sorta busy but no... we in the industry call a guy like that "One Speed", as in slow speed it was like watching a turtle move or watching paint dry. They need to fire that guy he is ruining there business(unless hes the owner then forget it game over for them if you have someone that wants to do it their way and not the best way for the business and customers then stick a fork in them, them's done!) Im not the only one that experienced bad service read the reviews a lot of others feel the same way on here. Having a meal is suppose to be a positive experience not one that pisses you off so much that you can't enjoy eating your food! This was definitely not what I expected. There are tables (no sushi bar to sit at), but you go up and order at the register and pay in advance. They then give you a number and bring your food to your table. The menu is not put together in a way that is pleasing to the eye. And the pictures are not at all appetizing. But I had 30 mins so I decided to push on. I just got the combo A, which is a California roll and 6 pieces of sushi. Not how I would normally order, but it seemed safe and this was not a place I wanted to invest much time in. I did not have a good feeling. And that was before I realized that my soy sauce would be coming out of a large coffee dispenser. All that said, the tables were clean. The presentation of the food was nice. The fish was fine. The rice was plentiful. For under $10, definitely a great deal. That said, I would never bring someone here or make this a destination. Our child is allergic to wasabi and we specifically tell them not to add wasabi and they did each time. We placed an order yesterday- of course they didn't take the order correctly again. We arrived when the store opened and there were some problems with the POS system which prevented us from ordering for a few mins. This was not a big deal but it took them nearly 45 minutes to make 2 plates for us when we were first in line which is pretty crazy given the subpar quality of the food. The worst part though was that my meat arrived ice cold to the touch and for the first time in my life I asked for it to be sent back only to hear an angry cook in the background. We may have came in on a very bad day for the restaurant and it was clear that they are understaffed. But with so many competitors in the area I'm not sure if they'll be around much longer if today's experience is a regular occurrence. I'm really disappointed. I've been coming here my entire life- my family used to have weekly sushi/pizza movie nights so my mom could get Sango. I loved their food and I knew the employees- and they knew me. But a couple years ago, I think the restaurant was sold to someone else and ever since then, there has been a MASSIVE decline in every way. The food is meh on a good day when it used to be excellent and the staff is nothing like what it used to be. I used to be greeted as soon as I walked in the door, by name, with a smile and I didn't ever have to give my order. I know that's a unique experience but even if I hadn't been in in years, it was always the same. Now I recognize no one and tonight was horrible. I asked for a modification because of an allergy and when they refused and I asked why, I was laughed at. The old expression: "Good, fast or cheap -- pick any two," doesn't apply at Sango because I've found I can get pretty good sushi and Japanese food quickly and reasonably priced here. I don't come here for the ambiance. I come for some good nigiri sushi and rolls. Their maguro is of good quality as is most of their other seafood so you can't go wrong ordering the mixed sushi combo. I also like their inside-out California rolls but personally think they overdo it on the sesame seed sprinkles on the outside of the rice. I like to order the baked scallops, a mixture of tiny bay scallops, sliced mushrooms and mayo baked until hot and bubbly. Then I spoon a little of this over my California roll. It's a bit rich, but something about the combination works. Frankly a place like this may not be your cup of tea, especially if you're looking to sit at the bar and share shots of sake with the chef. Surely nobody comes in here thinking they're going to get authentic Japanese food, and it's pretty obvious that this is a fast casual joint being run by absent management and part-time kids. And that's fine. We were all new at some point so I'm not docking any stars for that. The dining area is clean though a bit cramped, but the bathroom is spacious (and also clean). The food came out at a speed which is indicative of this sort of restaurant, and that's ok since I'm not really wanting to stay too long. Rolls are a decent size for the price and they tasted fine. Crazy Roll: Tempura roll topped with eel and salmon and sauce. It tasted saucy and not too heavy. Baked Scallop Roll: Salty California roll (I think it's in the "crab" meat) topped with warm scallops, green onion, and mayonnaise. One bite was good. Second bite not so much. Too much mayo. The other roll I don't remember. It has Salmon and Avocado on top of a California roll. I didn't try it because I was a bit scared to eat the raw fish here, but my friend didn't seem to have any issues. "Oriental Box" dinner needs a serious rethink in terms of its name. Chicken was dry and flat and the flavor was imparted solely from the sauce. Rice was fluffy. Poke salad was pretty good and the lettuce was crisp, though I'd have preferred less dressing since the poke was swimming in it at the end and I couldn't finish it. Tempura is large with more batter than I'd like but it wasn't terrible. California rolls were again, salty, but that's ok since I prefer not to use too much soy sauce anyway. Didn't touch the edamame. Would I recommend this place? No. Would I seek this place out on my own? No. If someone suggested to come here, would I be ok with it? Sure. Like I said, it's not bad. It's just food and you're in Laguna Niguel so, "sushi" and "Japanese" come at a compromise (a severe compromise). Parking is easy and ample. I hadn't ordered sushi from the restaurant in months because the quality wasn't very good. Last night I decided to go for it and order expecting ok sushi. To my surprise the quality was amazing! The best sushi we have ever ordered in years from this restaurant. Not sure if ownership changed or what but the tuna, salmon, and yellowtail was delicious!!! I am a sucker for good salmon sushi and it is pretty darn good especially since I am use to really high end sushi. My boy loves the udon noodles and I am especially impressed with the fact that they always do the order right.
