I had not been here in years but we were in the neighborhood and looking for a good breakfast spot so we decided to give it a shot. The decor has changed since I was last here, it's quaint and comfortable. We were seated promptly and coffee was on the table in a jiffy. Our food was excellent--I had the Cowboy Omelet and Mary had some bacon and eggs with biscuits and gravy (the Blacksmith). She volunteered that the bacon was great and all of my food was served hot and tasty. The check came to $24.20 plus tax and tip--do little cafes like this usually get $2.40 for a cup of joe? Next time in this area at breakfast time we'll be back in. If they can repeat this kind of experience, it could be a five-star joint. read more

So we're from out of town and trying to try a new restaurant for every meal, this one wasn't as great as some of the reviews say it is. The hostess that sat us didn't seem to wanna even be there, the waitress lacked any ounce of enthusiasm at all, the manager or whatever she was kept spastically checking every table as if she was nervous of the place being on the edge of shutting down and the girl in front that you take your ticket to couldn't seem to do anything besides stare at her phone. There was also one employee that told someone loudly enough to be heard across the restaurant to "take the F'ing french toast". The attitudes of the employees were awful. The food? Meh, I've made better at home. I can't remember exactly the item I ordered, but I had french toast and got a waffle on the side. The french toast was just regular cinnamon bread from the store with butter drenched on it, the waffle made me think of Eggo at first bite. The butter didn't even melt when I put it on the waffle. The bacon was like biting into microwaved bacon that had been reheated. Overall, if we're ever back in KC, we aren't coming here. read more

My husband and I seem to always end up at the same ol' breakfast/brunch joints (because we don't mess around when it comes to breakfast food), so we decided to branch out one morning. We've passed Santa Fe Café many times and figured we would finally try it out. The restaurant is actually bigger than I thought. When you walk in, there's a small area with a handful of tables, but they actually have a bigger dining area right next door that's not immediately visible because it's behind a wall partition. We were seated right away with our drink orders taken at the same time. I like when they do this, so we don't have to wait for drinks. However, they do give you a pitcher of ice water at the table, which is awesome because you can pour yourself a glass immediately, instead of having to wait for them to come bring you water. I am generally a thirsty person and can easily drink a whole pitcher (of water), and then some, during a meal. Sweet tea lovers, rejoice! They have it here. I ordered a sweet tea as I never miss out on a chance to sweet tea at a restaurant if they have it, since KC is unfortunately not southern enough geographically and figuratively. The server was friendly and attentive, but there were only 2 other parties dining in on this Monday morning (Federal holiday). It's likely a lot more hectic and lively during the weekend brunch times. As for food, I went for the Pony Express Breakfast Sandwich with sausage on a biscuit. To be frank, it was mediocre, which was a big disappointment. I could have spent less and prepared a much better sandwich at home. The sausage was dry and did not give a very nice mouthfeel because of it. The flavor was okay. The hash browns I ordered with it were CRISP. I'm not one for dogging crispy hash browns, but they were so crisp, that they tasted stale. Though there's the possibility that it was reheated leftovers. My husband got the Santa Fe Breakfast Combo with pancakes and sausage. He LOVES sausage, but he didn't eat his after one bite because of the same reason I mentioned previously. He also felt that hash browns were too stale and crispy. The only particular thing he enjoyed were the pancakes, and even then, it wasn't anything we couldn't have made at home. It's unfortunate that Santa Fe Cafe was such a letdown, as the number of breakfast/brunch places nearby are limited. I guess we'll have to keep searching for a regular spot. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Santa Fe Cafe checks all the delicious breakfast boxes. Their entrees are always so delicious and remind me of home. My husband and I stopped in (not for the first time) Labor Day weekend before we spent the day running errands. You may have a slight wait, but it's definitely worth it. We got lucky and didn't have to wait. One very quirky thing I love about this place is their mismatched coffee mugs. So cute and fun! I ended up having the blacksmith with my eggs sunny side up and my husband had the chicken fried steak. The food was all so delicious, and while they give you plenty they don't give you an aggressive amount of food, which we appreciate. We went to Santa Fe Cafe on a Friday for brunch. It wasn't too busy and we got our drinks quickly. It took about 15 minutes for our waitress to get our order but our food was ready relatively quickly. I ordered biscuits and gravy and it was perfectly fine. No one had anything to complain about but it also wasn't the best breakfast I've had. They have many options but I think their breakfast items are overpriced fir. There is a lot of seating so I'm sure larger groups could eat here without issue. Altogether it was a fine experience but I probably won't be eating breakfast here again. read more

Took my partner in crime with me here for his birthday breakfast and boy were we surprised at how delicious the food was! He had been eyeing this place for awhile, because of all the great reviews on it. The service was excellent! The lady that served was was super nice and very quick in getting our orders in a timely manner. I ordered the cinnamon roll and it was quite heavenly. I was taken aback by it's hot gooey center, it was so scrumptious and quite filling. It is by far the best cinnamon roll i've ever had in KC! It was literally baked to perfection. I hate it when the rolls are too sweet or not moist enough. Just when I thought nothing could top the cinnamon roll...BAM! The Hashbrowns ended up tasting like it had been from a breakfast in bed special at a high end hotel where I could never afford lol. I can't gush enough about the hashbrowns. The top of it was baked to a golden crisp, not brown, but legit golden glaze to it. After you cut through the crisp, you get to the perfectly cooked potatoes underneath. I have never tasted hashbrowns cooked to perfection such as the dish that they made. Seasoned perfectly and man I would love to know their secret! When our waitress found out it was my partner's birthday, she got him the Birthday crepe! Boy was that delicious! It was filled with all kinds of berries and bananas. Great presentation and again not too sweat which I like! So if it's your birthday...better speak up, so you can get a nice little treat...haha more like a hugh plate of crepes! This is quaint little family restaurant tucked away in a strip mall. When you walk in, it's almost like sitting at the table while Grandma cooks you breakfast (or possibly lunch too.) The menu is packed with breakfast favorites and some sandwiches if you decide to dine a little later. The plates are good home cooked food served with filling portions. I took my best shot at a chicken fried steak smothered in country gravy with 2 eggs, hash browns and toast. Service was quick, comforting and a little surly in a good way. Santa Fe is about 2 minutes from my house by car, 10 by walk, and is a lovely little treasure. The decor is filled with kitschy homage to the Santa Fe trail, but that's not why you're there. You're there because they have awesome breakfast! Try the smoothies (a bit thick - ask them to make them a bit thinner if you don't like them that way) or the crepes and make sure you order the home fries instead of the hash browns - they are crispier and tastier. Everything's good, and they have a loyalty punch card and a well-oiled machine of hostess/waitress/line cooks/runners/cashier. With the feeling of a morning getting attended to by your matronly grandmother and the western decor, this place has just has a warm feeling that gets you in a good mood. Then you check out their menu. I love options and this place has them in spades! All of your down-home American breakfast favorites, they have them along with a solid lunch menu. After seeing a neighboring table get a waffle, my wife couldn't pass it up. I went with biscuits and gravy, a true American staple. I got the two biscuit one, but they do offer a three biscuit order, if you could eat it all. The two was enough for me. I had a taste of my wife's waffle and it was easily one of the best I've ever eaten. Don't blink or you'll drive right by this place. I ordered a southern benedict. The english muffin was toasted to perfection. There was the perfect portion of ham and turkey. The egg was cooked perfectly and was like liquid gold when I broke it open. The hollandaise was very creamy. My coworker had a breakfast burrito of some sort and raved about it during the entire meal. This seems like a little hole in the wall but the food is incredible. The only reason it got a four instead of a five is that the service was a little slow. To be fair, it was plenty busy in there but it took a while to get my order. Best spot to grab brunch in Overland Park. I was greeted immediately and shown to my table. The restaurant was very clean and well organized. I had the scrambled eggs, bacon, and fluffy pancake with hash-browns. It was all delicious! The bacon wasn't the cheap thin bacon you sometimes find at some cheap dinners, the bacon was thick cut & hearty. This was my first time at Santa Fe Cafe. The waitress was very kind and prompt. We were up EARLY on a Sunday to take our daughter to the airport so when we got back to Shawnee we decided to go try a new breakfast spot. When we got there at 8:20 we had our choice of tables but when we left an hour later it was pretty packed. I had the cinnamon swirl french toast and it was amazing! However, 3 slices is way too much food and I really love having a little savory with my sweet so I would have loved to have the option to get a smaller serving with some eggs and sausage on the side. This place is a hidden jewel! My muffin was warm and freshly baked, not to mention HUGE. The Banana Split, is a lengthwise cut banana that cradles Greek yogurt, granola, strawberries and blueberries fantastic. My husband had the Ranchero omelet and all the ingredients were again, FRESH! Even the English Muffin was moist and crispy like their supposed to be. The interior is newly upgraded and has a great modern, yet country design. I had to add a photo of the Vespa parked outside because it was the cutest thing ever. Anyway go, right now! You'll be happy you did. read more

Santa Fe Cafe is an Overland Park gem! You could easily pass it on the street, but it is most certainly worth the stop! I absolutely adore the pancakes! My favorite are the cranberry walnut pancakes. The pancakes are as big as the plate and so fluffy! They are a perfect mix of sweet, fluffy, crunchy and tart. I like to have a side of sausage with the pancakes. If you are more of a pancake purist, the buttermilk pancakes are delicious and you cannot go wrong with the Santa Fe Breakfast Combo. If you are an egg fan, the omelets are also delicious! In addition to the great food, you get some fun character with your hot beverage because they have an assortment of coffee mugs from everywhere, businesses, little tourist spots, etc. The staff are always friendly and the owner really gets to know the customers! Well.... it's good for some things, I guess. We went here to eat a few days ago, the husband and I plus my sister and her two kids, ages 2 and 4. They wisely put us in a somewhat isolated corner so that the kids wouldn't be all up in everybody else's faces, they were there almost immediately with kids menus/coloring books and offered up kid friendly options beyond what was immediately apparent. My sister said they were quite accommodating for families with young kids, so if that's your current scenario, then maybe Santa Fe Cafe is your bag. It, however, is not my bag. I kinda assumed it was named Santa Fe Cafe because of it's close proximity to the street of the same name. That might be somewhat the case, but I think it's more for their love of adobe and turquoise. What I'm trying to say, is that this place looks like Captain South-West (the official mascot of New Mexico) vomited all over the walls, and they decided to keep it. The food, however, is pretty traditional diner food and didn't have much of a connection to the decor. I'd say the menu is pretty much on par with what you might get at First Watch or any other similar concept. I had some sort of chicken wrap, and it was just OK. The chicken itself had that not-so-fresh feeling, and while I obviously cannot prove it, I suspect microwaves were involved. That being said, my mashed potatoes and gravy were pretty dang good. Service was friendly, and our drinks didn't stay empty long. I wouldn't say he was the best at anticipating needs, but once you told him what you wanted, he sure went and got it. Oh, lots of senior citizens. Like, maybe all of them? Good if you've got kids or old people. Basically anybody that likes soft foods. I don't think I'd go back, unless I was with one of the aforementioned populations and didn't have decision making power. Went here for breakfast today for the first time. It was pretty crowded but our wait wasn't too long. I had the vegetarian benedict which came with a side of fruit. I've never been to a restaurant that serves 6 different types of fruit in the fruit bowl! I'm not kidding - strawberries, grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple and honeydew. And they were actually ripe and tasty! My husband had the Blacksmith. The sausage gravy was almost as good as mine! Just the right amount of pepper. The hash browns were also better than expected. I've eaten here on and off for about two years and this place has really grown on me. It's definitely not the corporatized breakfast joint you'd take your clients for a pre-meeting scramble, but at the same time, not a place you would expect to find a great variety and assortment of delicious breakfast and lunch options. The food definitely meets expectations as well as the friendly servers and gregarious hostess running the register and greeting customers. This morning's specials (sausage pie and cranberry/walnut pancakes) perfectly embodied the first day of fall. These hearty entrees were hot, tasty, and served up quickly. Previous meals here were just as good. This is a quirky joint with random knick knacks you'd expect to find in a country general store, not in a strip mall off 87th Street Pkwy. None of the coffee mugs match (today's was "My Blue Heaven Dance Party 2007" while the adjacent table had "Kemtech Annual Meeting 1985") but much akin to the rest of the decorations, it seems to work for SFC. They've also joined the FrontFlip bandwagon and offer diners a chance at a free breakfast for two. I won a free plain pancake but didn't have anywhere to put it after my two colossal griddle cake for the meal. Don't miss a trip here. The local Lenexans and Overland Parkies always cast hazy gaze in your direction as your enter their regular dining spot, but everyone is treated like the head cowpoke at Santa Fe Cafe. read more

For six years, I lived right around the corner from this place and only went in once. I don't really know why, I just always seemed to forget it was there. It's tucked into a little strip mall by a nail salon, and everything there seems to blend in together, so it's easy to just overlook it. But this time, I was back in town visiting my kids and we went here for breakfast and had a wonderful experience. My son, daughter, and I all got eggs benedict (my favorite breakfast in the world), and my granddaughter had pancakes. The portions were HUGE, and the fresh fruit cups with our orders were perfect. The server was quick to take care of us, constantly refilling the coffee, and did a great job helping to keep our little angel entertained. They were even kind enough to work out a discount for us, changing up a couple of coupons that we had. It's nothing fancy, but the food is good and the service is friendly. Well the entrance door brings you straight to the exit door. We just got out of the way and sat in Some chairs they had. They took a while to sit us down and still didn't get any service for a while i thought this place was great but now its just horrible service don't recommend it my experience sucked and it was the first time i took my whole family they were not impressed. Maybe they get overwhelmed on the weekends not sure but the vibe was not it. In the world of mediocre breakfast joints, Santa Fe stands a step above. My fiance and I stopped by on a Sunday at about 8am while she was taking me to the airport, and the place was quite dead. Over time, it filled up with what seemed to be Sunday regulars - they all knew each other, they all chatted. Picture the regulars at your (or my) local bar, but add about 30 IQ points and a plate of waffles. The restaurant is comfortable, with tons of decorations on the wall. It's also very clean, from what I saw. Service was very friendly and efficient throughout. Now on to the food! I don't quite remember the name of what my fiance had, but it had French Toast, eggs, bacon and hash browns. All of it was delicious - the french toast was flavorful and rich, the eggs were fluffy and moist, the bacon was thick and not too crispy (I hate crispy bacon, as it has no flavor in my book) and the hash browns were crispy, crunchy and salty (in a good way). I had the crepes with fresh fruit - banana, strawberry and blueberry. The fruit itself was perfect - big chunks that were slightly sugary but not so much that, like most places, it tastes like dessert. The crepe itself was delicious.
