((3.75 stars)) an A-okay Dominican bakery serving up cakes, pastries, empanadas and sandwiches on Clinton Street in the Lower East Side. very much a local hole-in-the-wall serving up a variety of baked eats and coffee to area residents. no seating here as the place is fairly small and narrow as it is more of a grab-n-go or stand and eat. there are standard bakery eats like croissants, doughnuts, cookies, cinnamon rolls and more as well as more Spanish desserts and sweets like dulce de leche cake, flan, tembleque. the coffee here is pretty standard coffee maker coffee--A-okay and does the job, but nothing special. the baked items err on the sugary side as i tried the doughnuts, cookies, and cinnamon rolls. . there's a pretty large menu of made-on-the-grill sandwiches like the bacon and egg roll sandwich on a long roll that i got here, recently. the sandwich was made to order to-go. it was satisfying sandwich post-gym and they toast/press the sandwich. the bacon + egg were cooked nicely went well with the bread which was buttered, rich, and pressed. overall, Santo Domingo is very much a product of Spanish-speaking folks that anchored the Lower East Side and very much exist to serve them. read more

Today 2/10, I bought a delicious Dulce de Leche cake. All the guests loved it! It was moist and delicious! I love this bakery! Lina is so sweet, thoughtful and kind. She has great customer service! On Friday, I bought two big loafs of bread, a slice of pineapple cake, a slice of plain Dominican cake, a slice of caramel cake and a tres leches cake. Everything was absolutely delicious! My family and I know about good cakes, and this place really have the most delicious, moist and flavorful cakes and pastries ever. The staff is so helpful and friendly! The place is small but it doesn't matter because everything they sell is delicious! The only down side for me was the fact that they only take cash. read more

The "pan de manteca" (lard bread) ($1.50+) toasted with butter is awesome! With a "cafe con leche" (coffee with milk), fabulous! The slice of Dominican cake ($3) with pineapple was below average. I've had a hankering for Dominican cake and was excited to get it but disappointed upon tasting. The frosting was whipped cream, not "suspiro" but I knew that going in because I asked before purchasing. But the flavor profile was yukky. Sugary, grainy, and odd taste (not vanilla-ish or anything familiar). The cake wasn't light or buttery. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good as I remember Dominican cake to be. Service was efficient and good. I loved how she wrapped up the toasted bread in foil to keep warm! I bought other items. I haven't tried yet. Maybe l'll update afterwards. read more

A small family owned Dominican bakery in the Lower East Side. From what I hear, this bakery has been here for the longest time. It's located on the lower level on Clinton St. The interior probably needs some updating and there aren't any seats for customers. The displays are very retro as in 1980s-1990s compared to all the bakeries. It's probably looked the same as it did from 20 years ago. They have pastries, cookies, flan, puddings and list goes on. They have a large selection of ready made birthday cakes and they will also make custom cakes. Another thing that's cool is they have a grill and they make some tasty sandwiches and empanadas. Been living here for forever, literally around the corner but for some reason never stopped in despite it being the closest thing to home baking/cooking I could find. Been missing my Abuela y Mama like crazy lately with the pandemic going on so I needed a little bit of comfort food that I just could not replicate myself, what better way than a pastelito de carne y un pan de queso? The pastel de guayaba was also... you know.. really hit home and brought a tear to my eye :) I want to make a comment in regards to the quality of what I purchased, it may not be the most technically sound bake/food you could get, especially considering the amounts of fancy pants restaurants around here, but fuck that shit, I felt the love in what they fed me, that's what matters when it comes to comfort food and they hit a home run here, no wonder they've been in the neighborhood for so long. Only other place I get that feeling with is Cibao, also on the corner from me. If you're from the Caribbean (Any island, not just DR, I'm Cuban for example), grew up with this type of stuff, then this is one of 2 spots you need to support, especially if you want to preserve the already dwindling neighborhood. I had ordered this Sunday cake for my daughter's birthday. It was a yellow cake with three milks for the middle taste. That cake was heavenly. The frosting wasn't as sweet as the previous Dominican cakes I've ever had before. And the cake was nice and spongy. The cake itself was nice and spongy. Notice how all of the lower rated comments are from those who aren't from DR, PR, or Cuba and obviously don't know what they're talking about lol. These people work hard serving a high volume of people for cheap. On a consistent daily basis! So don't be surprised that they are human and not the happiest at 7am. They are nice though, just maybe not the warmest or friendliest during rush hours. Obviously, it's well known that Dominicans can be loud so if you don't like that and aren't used to it, go somewhere else lol. No one's holding a gun to your head. Also, I suggest the guy below my review to look up the definition of racial profiling because that ain't it lol. They obviously have regular customers who happen to be Hispanic because duh, it's a Dominican spot, so they are probably more willing to cater to them before anyone. They are the ones who have helped keep this spot open with their business during good and bad times- like COVID. If you have a problem with someone skipping you - you are grown and can open your mouth. I hope this place stays as is. It doesn't need fancy renovating, upgrades, etc like every other place in the LES is trying to do *cough* *Essex Market* Preserve some of the old nostalgic LES like this. This is hands down, one word for this place: AWESOME! Santo Domingo bakery, is an old-school, small, sort of hole-on-the-wall joint, that's been around for decades. The service they provide to their customers is superb. Today, I just got off work and I wanted a snack. I ordered a passion fruit juice. Although it ended up with a slushy consistency, I simply loved it! It was a burst of delicious, ripe, fruit flavor. Very refreshing. I also got one pastelito de res, and a quipe. I wished it a little bit crispy but it was tasty. Definitely coming back to try some pastries, and of course, gotta have some Dominican cake too! read more

I would actually rate as 3.5 stars. They have good quipped and egg sandwiches. However the half star deduction is bc we ordered a Cuban sandwich but it was just a buttered Cuban roll. They are clean and friendly. I love that it's been there a long time. I plan to go back another time to try other things. Other reviewers have mentioned the corn pudding and Dominican cake. I've tried a few things from here. Don't remember much of the names but it's comparable to the rest of the Latin American bakeries I have been to. The place is small but the line moves fast. i don't like having to give businesses unsolicited advice. but on that note... this bakery lacks in inventory and variety being that it's a very dated spot. yes, it's grown its white whiskers and survived many years of being in the LES. i cannot recall a time where i walked in and they still had baked items for sale. the Empanadas are super dainty and over fried. the Quipe is delicious, but also over fried. i'm giving it the extra star because their coffee is like crack. read more

This was a spot I'd known about for a while, and has been around for years, but I never found myself walking by at a good time. Came in on a cold New Years Day morning, happy as a clam for a good start to the year, excited to try something new to start the year. Instead, I, along with several other customers, experienced blatant racial discrimination. The line was about 4-5 people deep when I came in to grab a hot cup of coffee and a hopefully delectable pastry. Everything was normal, as the man took care of 2/3 people ahead of me, while offering mediocre service (smiles cost nothing). In walks an older Dominican woman. She takes the liberty of skipping the line, and loudly addresses the man behind the counter...relax lady, it's early and the store is small AND there are people here ahead of you. This is when it becomes a WTF moment. The man immediately takes care of the woman who had CLEARLY just walked in. The main difference between her and everyone else on line? She spoke to him in Spanish. The woman in front of me takes issue with this, and lets her know that she just skipped the entire line. The Domincan woman's response? "Yeah, I know" *stupid smirk* (the kind that says 'I'm sorry, but it's too late for you to do anything) So she looks to the guy behind the counter to see what he does, and he just continues fulfilling the skipper's order. The disgruntled woman in front of me walks out, and I followed suit. Before I leave, the Dominican woman gives me a look, as if to say 'That lady is crazy.' I say the only thing I can possibly think of, 'You can't blame her, you did just skip the entire line.' I would've been next, but it was hard to stay and let racial profiling win. read more

Mmmmm ohmigosh!! Ok, what I really love about this place isn't even the cakes, although let me tell you, one of the best spots in LES to get some great Dominican cake. My passion here is the bacon egg and cheese. I don't know what it is, but its just so damn delicious here!! Me and a friend would come out of school and head here for breakfast in the afternoon. It's just really good! And every now and again when I'm in the neighborhood, this is where a stop by when I'm in need of a little grub. The flan is good too. Firm, but still relatively creamy. This place has the best majarete ever! I wandered in here because I saw the name and being Dominican I wanted to see what they had to offer. The place is pretty small, with a non descript sign on top. They have all the usual pastries you will find in most Dominican bakeries and of course they have Dominican cake. I'm extremely particular about my Dominican cake so I didn't even try the one here but they do sell it by the slice as well as the usual whole cakes. What I did have here was the majarete and it was amazing!! For those who don't know majarete is this amazing corn pudding, that I recall from my childhood as a treat you would get every once in a long while because it was so time consuming to make. I couldn't believe how wonderful this tasted, it's so smooth, sweet and they sprinkle tyne perfect amount of cinnamon on top. I even got some for my mother and she loved it. This place is cash only but the prices here are super cheap. If you're in the neighborhood and want to try some authentic Dominican treats you should definitely come here! read more

None of the reviews for Santa Domingo Bakery has mentioned the guava cheese pastries. OMG they are off the hook! i've passed by this little bakery many times and I've never given it much thought. One day I do step in to see their selection of goods and my eyes immediately noticed the guava cheese pastries. I bought a few home ($2.25 each) and toasted it a little, and I devoured it immediately. I'm so glad I ate it at home because my carnage was not a pretty site. Being the kind or person who really, really enjoys an inexpensive (free), hearty (huge) and delicious breakfast, it only made sense that Santo Domingo and I would develop a rather healthy relationship. Living in the LES for roughly 6 years allowed my SDB bond to really blossom. I can only imagine how things would have been better had I been able to habla espanol. Even with my pathetic attempts to win over the staff with my broken Spanglish I was never let down by tasty breakfast treats. No Bueno! I used to come here for their guayaba & cheese but now they leave out 95% of the cheese so its just all guava paste! I took a bite into it and noticed there was something really off about it- there were 5 tiny pieces of cheese in it! If they're going to just fill it with guava paste, thats fine but they should change the name and not deceive customers who think there's cheese and guava in it. Cheap and Good! I come here for breakfast almost every morning. There breakfast is usually really good, but lately they have been slacking. I get a bagel with butter, but you have to tell them really toasted. Before they used to make it prefect, now if you don't tell them they don't do it. Sometimes they wouldn't even cut the bagels, or cheese sandwich. There hot chocolate is really really really really good!! I love it they don't use water , they use boiled milk. Just tell them to mix it for you. Basically this place you have to tell them what you want. They are usually friendly besides one person besides that this place is good. Don't go here for Dominican cake. I came to NYC for a number of things and finding great Dominican cake was one of those. This bakery came up with decent reviews so we tried it out. There are lots of options for other pastries as well as sandwiches.. The cake was too dry and the piña filling was a flavoured syrup instead of the traditional pinapple filling.. The frosting aka suspiro was way too sweet and tangy. However, I could be biased because Ive had the best and that was in Florida. Overall, it was disappointing. read more
