Great location and fun ambience with the Broadway scene and all the character drawings. We came just for dessert and the homemade cookies are a MUST. Absolutely delicious wish I just ordered that plate. Comes with 2 chocolate, 2 chocolate chip and 2 biscottis all homemade and amazing. I ordered the tiramisu which had an orange liquor taste to it. I wish it said that on the menu because I wasn't a fan. I couldn't finish it and thought it'd be good considering it was homemade but didn't like it too much. Actually had pretty low expectations for this place, so I think I can call my recent trip to Sardi's a success. I had actually heard about this place quite some time ago, but kind of forgot about it. Truth is, there are so many old school Times Square restaurants that are simply there to gobble up unsuspecting tourists who don't do any research on restaurants, so it's easy to write this one off as one of 'those' restaurants. Still, Sardi's does have some sort of hook: it's apparently frequented by many famous people, as evidenced by their artwork wall. Still, don't count on seeing famous people when you go- the chances of this happening are probably really small. I got the spaghetti and meatballs. Technically it doesn't exist on the menu, but if you ask for spaghetti pomodoro with meatballs, I guess they'll give it to you. I suppose it's a common enough order? My dish was fine, a little tasteless, but overall there was nothing wrong with it. Like I said, for a times square restaurant, this could have been much, much worse. read more

I normally do check yelp before I step into a restaurant because I don't like to try a place having less than 4 stars but today I was desperate for lunch before a matinee so I didn't even check and I'm very happy I just went in.. The service was perfect, our waitress was so helpful and aware we were in a rush.. we had the gnocchi , Thai chicken soup , spicy and delicious, and crab cake .. all was delicious! The best thing was to be in the theater area and not be in a packed dining area.. very comfortable spacious space. We had a Saturday matinee recently (Bronx Tale) and stopped at the one and only Sardi's on 44th St in the Theater District. A venerable institution for many, many years, I figured it was due time to add this establishment to "The List. (Actually, I totally forgot to make reservations at BECCO, my favorite place on Broadway and they were booked. Regardless, I am very glad we dined at Sardi's. It's exactly as I expected, a huge main dining room on the 1st floor, another on the 2nd. The walls covered with those infamous caricatures of almost every famous actor from the past 50 years. A huge waitstaff with the goal to get you in\out to see your show. Sardi's is a fine tuned machine putting on it's own show every day\night. I should have mentioned we already saw the show to slow it down a bit. The entrees arrived as one of us was still on her appetizer, but again, this is what a place like this is about. FYI- Our waiter David was excellent and very personable. Sardi's has decent cocktails with a very small wine list. Most items can be ordered as an appetizer or an entree which is a great idea. It really helped us figure out what we had. THE FOOD: apps: --French Onion Soup au gratin was a very good version --Cannellini Bean soup with a pesto creme frache' was amazing (it was a Special). It was excellent. --Jumbo Lump Crab cake served with Smoked Tomato Piquillo Aioli and a Baby Spinach, Cucumber, Red Pepper, Carrot, Napa Cabbage Salad with an Asian Vinaigrette was good. Nothing to write home about. entrees: --Cannelloni au Gratin - A combination of Beef, Veal and Sweet Pork Sausage rolled in a French Crepe with a Sherry Flavored Tomato Cream Meat Sauce is what they are FAMOUS for. It was aw --Orange Teriyaki Glazed Broiled Salmon with Caramelized Ginger Sweet Potato Puree, Sautéed Spinach, Sesame Seeds And Sweet Lime Soy Sauce (another Special). This was another great dish we highly recommend. The flavors all balance perfectly for a great final end product. --Penne Pasta with Grilled Chicken Breast, Portobello Mushroom, Sun Dried Tomato, Scallions and Lemon Cream Sauce was another well prepared dish. ..LARGE portion as an entree as well. We skipped dessert, had some great coffee, and went back out to play on Broadway some more. I really feel Sardi's deserves 3.5 stars (but as we know, we cannot do that here). If I gave it 4 stars, I'd feel compelled to make this my one and only Theater District stop,. If you're going to a Broadway show, this is likely to be the best location ever. And it's a theatrical legend with every inch of the walls adorned with caricatures of those that have trodden the boards. I once read someone state that the food at Sardi's is the "longest running gag on Broadway". It's not that the food is bad, it's just that it's what any average amateur cook could conjure up in their own kitchen. Yet, I keep going back, I think because I adore the theatrical history. The service at this restaurant is excellent. We had a 6 pm dinner reservation prior to seeing Phantom of the Opera at 8 pm and our group size was 4. I was attracted to this restaurant due to its proximity to the theatre and long history in NYC but a little hesitant due to some of the reviews I read. I went in with modest expectations and left impressed. We were seated immediately upon entering, our waiter greeted us and could not have been more accommodating. The bread they brought to the table was delicious, the cannelloni was such good comfort food and the apple crumble dessert with ice cream was heavenly. Their wine bottle prices are also really reasonable. The women's restroom even had an attendant who was the sweetest lady. We finished eating and walked across the street to the theatre. Comparing this to other restaurants in its price point it was a good but the service exceeded all expectations. A great choice for pre-theatre dining. read more

Okay, follow me on this. What this boils down to, perhaps obviously, is whether you're into "the experience" or not. It's everything you think it is, and it will probably/hopefully never change. The hub and I (oh yes, we got "gay married" two weeks ago) went there recently for a Mad Men-ish experience. We'd never been there before and had a gift certificate. Sardi's first floor has no windows. You enter an all-encompassing red room, with walls loaded with framed celebrity caricatures ... Liza here, Joan Rivers there, someone I've never heard of there. And yes, the waitstaff all wear heavy burgundy jackets. I was a little nervous about the food, after reading so many negative comments on here. But, the truth is, the food is quite yummy. I think the objection may come from the price points. The spectacular onion soup (which I'm now a bit obsessed with) was a measly $8.50, and totally worth it. But the "deals" end there. Sandwiches will run you around $22 - $25, and things sorta go up from there. My hubby got the Steak Tartar and devoured it. I had the Bistro Salad, and couldn't finish it. We remained full for the rest of the day. Hmm ... perhaps it is worth the high price? Ultimately, this is a "special occasion" place, but I do highly recommend it for those occasions. Good food. Five stars for this NYC - Theatre District staple. Broadway wouldn't be the same without Vincent Sardi's 1927 restaurant and bar. Thanks to the Shuberts' inclusion in their new office building that was going up near the Shubert and Booth theatres, we get this perfect time machine of a place right in the middle of a world that has all but forgotten what was great about Times Square. Stepping though the glass doors, you go back in time - to a simpler, more elegant Broadway where stars and producers and fans all dined together surrounded by caricatures. The caricatures are still there (look for Kermit The Frog from "Muppets Take Manhattan"), even though Broadway has changed. We owe it to the history of Broadway to make sure that congregation and conversation continues at Sardi's. Now that we've lost the Edison and Howard Johnson's, there's not many of these golden places left. The best place for a pre/post-theatre drink in the neighborhood is at the upstairs bar. read more

I was ambivalent about coming to Sardi's for dinner as celebrity haunts are not always known for food but for high priced, "gotta be seen" with snobby wait staff dining. That was not the case when we came to Sardi's. The place can seem intimidating. Everyone was pretty much "dressed up" and we were in in our grubby jeans. Turns out, by almost 8 PM, the dressy crowd exited to their Broadway shows so we had the restaurant almost completely to ourselves except for a few patrons at the bar. We were asked to move to a window table by the end of our entrees because a crowd of over 30 came in for a post wedding rehearsal dinner of sorts. It turned out to be great because we were able to watch the long line of Phantom of the Opera folks pile into the theater. It was chilly to sit by the window. Talk about classy, they also comp us for our desserts because of the inconvenience. It's rather a kick to see the cartoon pictures of celebs lining the walls and trying to guess who they are. Some are easily identifiable but not others. The story per our waiter is that a gent needed meals, so Sardi's owner gave him 2 meals a day and he would be there daily to draw pictures of celebrities. There have been clearly at least 2 different artists based on the drawings. BFF and her hubby tried the Onion soups, $9.75, Smothered with cheese, not that much bread but a nice rich broth. Hubby had the quesadilla appetizer with chicken, $13. I didn't like this one. For entrees, 3 of us had the Cannelloni/Grati - filled with meat (beef/pork) and cheese covering all over it. The cheese had wine in it, one of Sardi's signature dishes. We were all going "Ooohhh, this is sooooo goood". $26 each. It was basically 2 crepes filled with meat and covered in this cheese/wine sauce. If you like a lot of cheese with wine, this dish is worth the price. I could've eaten 2 platefuls of it. Drinks - Manhattan $11; Long Island Iced Tea $13, Estancia Pinot Noir glass $13. Coffee $5. Our comp desserts were all good. I really liked my "frozen cake dessert", recommended by the waiter. It was similar to a Baskin-Robbins ice cream cake but so much better. BFF had the strawberries with whipped cream. I don't remember what the men had but they were good too. Would I consider coming back? Absolutely. Consider dining here without rushing off to a show, it makes the dining experience so much better and you pretty much have the restaurant to yourselves after the crowds empty out to the theaters. read more

So I have mixed feelings about Sardi's. During my first visit I hated it but on my second most recent visit I didn't mind it at all. I'll talk about my second most recent visit. I went with my friend Jen before we saw phantom of the opera...again! We each had soup and split two appetizers. We had the sardi's special appetizer and the cheese tasting. Sardi's can get expensive so if you're on a budget I suggest sharing meals. Both appetizers were delicious, my soup was also pretty damn good. I believe I had a soup with pumpkin or squash and apples and my assumption is that this soup may only be available as a special in the fall. My gripe with Sardi's is that they treat their pieces of bread like gold. Random waitstaff walk around with baskets of bread. If you're lucky you'll be offered a piece but sometimes you have to ask for it and sometimes when you do ask for it the waiter with the bread basket may or may not appear at your table. Please be more generous with the bread Sardi's! I'm not watching my carbs (even though I should be!) So besides the bread thing, Sardi's seems to be okay I might even go back there again one a few other occasions. read more

After many trips to NYC and always hearing about this place on my last trip we finally stopped in for dinner between shows. It was a very convenient location if you are see a broadway show. It lived up to the legend for us! And it was very cool to see all the drawings on the walls of famous people. They do offer a pre-fixed dinner menu with courses if you like that. We decided to order from the dinner menu. We started by sharing the seasonal watermelon and feta salad. Then for our entree my mom got the famous cannelloni au gratin and I got a chicken curry like dish. Both were delicious! One negative was instead of putting the bread on the table a waiter walks around with a bread basket. Well he only came to our table once and we had to ask for more bread. As someone who typically avoids the theater district (I usually go right to the show and then go right back home), I didn't know about Sardi's until recently. A friend's client was hosting an event here and invited me as her +1. After being directed to the 4th floor then back down to the 2nd floor, we finally found our way. This place is spacious with tons of seating and a good number of spots to get a drink. For special events, the beer selection is VERY limited but whatcha gonna do. I enjoyed the celebrity caricatures on the walls.The 2nd floor provided a nice view to 44th street down below. While it did get a little cramped until people started to depart for their shows, it wasn't terrible and wasn't overly stuffy. The staff is also very nice and helpful. read more

This place is in an excellent location in the theater district. We had just watched Aladdin went for a walk in Times Square and stumbled upon it. Its interior is full of character with an "American" charm. Celebrity caricatures out line the downstairs and upstairs of the restaurant. The staff is pleasant but for the most part very inattentive. I asked for bread twice it never came, I asked for my dressing twice to two different waiters as they didn't bring it out with my salad. The salad looked a bit unappealing and well it tasted just as expected. For my entree I ordered the cream raviolis and they weren't very good either. For as expensive as this place was it fell short by a long shot and I got a stomach ache later that evening. I would definitely never go back. read more

Sardi's is a staple in Times Square. It really feels frozen in time which gives it both charm and equally something to work on. Service at the bar (upstairs) is very old school. Bartenders are knowledgable and also quick and upbeat. If you can score a seat its pretty roomy up there unlike many other spots in this same area. The perspective looking down at the theatre crowd is also a bit unique and cool. Restrooms are also upstairs and pretty spotless and roomy. The dining areas up and down could use some refreshing. The lighting is a bit heavy on the yellow/orange which may come from the wood paneling. Sardi's menu is pretty standard. I was here with a party of 3 and we were pretty diverse -- steak, pasta and seafood. My steak was average to good. The pasta was pretty basic. Seafood elicited no complaints. Our waitress was young and energetic and had lots of personality. She was among the highlights of the experience. One of the cocktails turned out to be way overcharged on the bill which management corrected without much fuss. Sardi's could use some sprucing and it wouldn't take a lot of effort to make this place better than "average to good" so hopefully they make the effort. read more

I've dined at Sardis twice. I first came when I was 15 for dinner before the theater, and my 2nd trip occured last week for my birthday. Neither time disappointed. The staff at Sardi's couldnt have been anymore accomodating with my group, as the total number of people coming changed over and over, and we had several VERY late people join our party. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious. The prices were not outrageous considering the establishment and the area. We just racked up a bill on liquor. While opening a few birthday presents, I was excited to receive my favorite Michael Kors perfume. Apparently, someone overheard me at another table...Michael Kors. I like to think of Sardi's as New York's Brown Derby. It's a landmark of old Hollywood and Broadway's finest. It's lots of fun to just wander and check out all the stars that have dinned at Sardi's over the years. The bar upstairs is great for a before or after theater drink. I have been coming here Religiously with family and friends every time we go see a Broadway play. It is so basically in the heart of Broadway next to all of the most important theatres Shockingly you don't even really need a reservation because there is another floor and I've never had a problem getting a quick table the service is wonderful from the moment you walk in until the time you leave we've had great interactions with the staff we have had wonderful drinks and food. I definitely have pictures from my last trip there are a few months ago when we went to see misery across the street with Bruce Willis. They do have a before and after pride away rush so they do respect peoples timing which is a huge plus I never sent anything back But what sets this restaurant apart from car mines and the other places in the area I will say that I love the fact that they offer baked Alaska and different fish options and specials my family and friends are always in good spirits when we visit If this is your first time in New York City or you've been in the New York City area or have never actually thought to step in it just looks like a local bar it's bigger than it looks from the outside Prices are extremely reasonable in my opinion I've never thought it was overpriced Definitely the restaurant recommendation number one number two would probably be Carmines read more

We each started with a goat cheese salad with oranges and beets, I had the shrimp as a meal (instead of an appetizer), he had the scallops, we shared the chocolate mousse with raspberries, wine, and coffee with Kahlua. They had a staff member in the bathroom which always feels weird to me b/c of the whole class separation feeling (though she probably makes more than I do per annum). She was great though and I tried to write Sardi's but they don't seem to have a section to write compliments. Be sure to bring a dollar for her. Reservations on theatre night are absolutely necessary. If you are a large table make sure not to get the table at the top of stairs which has a ton of traffic. read more

Two of us visited for lunch prior to a matinee performance on Broadway. Sardi's is located smack-dab in the center of the theatre district. We arrived a bit early for our reservation and greeted by the handsomely dressed maitre de with a welcoming smile. The spacious, well lighted dining room was understandably busy withe the buzz of the pre-theatre crowd. He readily guided us to our table whose location was not to our liking. No problem, he graciously offered another table where we felt more compfortable. Sardi's has been serving theatre go'ers and professionals for generations, so they know how to move people without them feeling rushed. Our server was a delight, personable, efficient, and helpful with the menu. The offerings are many, none especially innovative or complex, in keeping with the time requirements of their guests. Yet, thee food is very good, prepared with fresh ingredients and quite tasty. The cocktails and wine were excellent without skimping on quality or quantity. for entrees we ordered beef bourguignon and the glazed salmon, both very enjoyable. prices are commensurate with the experience. We have dinner here before taking a shower across the street. Our server, Jordan, was very nice and friendly. We told him we had 8 pm tickets and he said he'd work with us to get to the show on time. We ordered the homemade mozzarella and tomatoes which was good, but a little bland. My wife had the scallops which were honestly amazing! So good!! I had the cannelloni which is one of the dishes they are known for. It was good, not great. When we were finished I tried to give Jordan our credit card to take when he was preparing the bill. He said he'd be right back with the check. Then he vaporized and we didn't see him for 15 minutes. Actually never saw him again. I asked two other servers to get us the check. No avail. So, my wife went to the server station and took care of it while I waited at the table. We got out with 5 minutes to spare. We barely made the show which did not reseat until intermission. Too close. Heard of this place my whole life. Visited New York so many times. I have been to many Broadway plays. In the seventies I couldn't afford this place. Saw that this was the place to go after Theatre. It is not busy after Theatre. Very good service, decent food. The history still is intact. I enjoy a place with energy. Not after Theatre. Glad to have eaten here in person. Just wish it was busier. Friends said the upstairs bar is their hangout. We went to eat and it was late. Okay meal. Would return before going to a play, but probably not after. read more

Being a native Montrealer, I had been to New York often growing up - but I had never been to Sardi's. Now living in the Seattle area, my family and I try to visit NYC for a few days every summer. Recently, after a Broadway show, we passed Sardi's and I decided, it was time to check out this New York institution. I am so glad we did! We shared desserts: their specialty, the "boccone dolce", and chocolate profiteroles with chocolate sauce. Hubby went wild for the profiteroles, but my daughter and I couldn't get over the boccone dessert. It was the best dessert we had ever had in our lives. Hard to describe, but it had light, soft meringue and strawberries and was the perfect combination of favors and textures. OMG, it was to die for. I also had an Irish coffee which was wonderful; the whipped cream was perfect. The visit here was super expensive, just for 2 desserts and a special coffee, but the experience, complete with snappily dressed and attentive waiters, white linen tablecloths, and being surrounded by the famous caricatures of stars and starlets - priceless! read more

By the general rule of thumb is that the closer to Times Square you are, the worse the food will be. A true foodie is eating down in the village or meatpacking district anyway. Go to Sardis to say you ate there and note all the famous faces gone by on the walls. Just order dessert or a salad. I knew this beforehand and ordered the roasted beet salad on the specials menu. But the "sardi traditions", such as the meat or spinach cannelloni, are drowning in cheap, greasy cheese like something from Olive Garden. And the bartenders are nice but mixologists they are not. Sardi's is to Broadway what the Brown Derby is to Hollywood. When you enter you are surrounded by caricatures on both floors of the famed legends of Broadway and current stars. That alone is worth a visit. The place is elegant but casual for lunch. I came to order the business lunch which was listed on their website as Tue, Thurs, or Fri. Instead I was told that lunch special is only available on Mons and Fridays. So I decided to to settle for the seafood Cobb salad which consisted of shrimp, crabmeat, carrots, corn, avocado, and mixed greens. I was also given a choice of one of 3 breads to choose from. My salad was very good and the service attentive. Since my original intent was to take advantage of the business lunch I stopped with my salad only. Sardi's is overpriced and is still the place where Broadway stars come after their evening performances. A couple of the famous caricatures I saw were Lucille Ball and Carol Channing. Sardi's was the place to go years ago but it is now a tourist trap. It is best to go for lunch to save on prices and of course to see the caricatures. It is worth one visit just for that reason. They did have a book they showed me containing the names of all the caricatures but since they are everywhere it is almost impossible to find them. My true rating would be 3 1/2 but I was pleased with my visit as well as both the service and the food. read more

Such a quaint place to grab a bite after a show. We had 10:00pm reservations and when we arrived we were seated promptly. Our waiter was pleasant and helpful. They delivered bread to our table as soon as we placed our order. Someone walked around with a bread basket so bread is readily available. We ordered the pasta with meatballs which was amazing and the cannelloni. It was very good but very rich. We ordered the tiramisu and cheesecake for dessert. My family being four, we set the appetizers in the middle of our table & shared all of our appetizers which in no matter what order complimented each other very well, for our main course we all got our Thanksgiving Turkey Plate, & for our desserts we got The Strawberry Cheesecake, Creme Brûlée, Tiramisu, & The Chocolate type cake w/ Vanilla Ice Cream which also as the appetizer complimented themselves very well.
