Sardi's - NYC staple and Broadway classic! Great atmosphere for pre or post-show meal. Went to celebrate my grandmother's birthday and was much enjoyed by all. We had two appetizers and two entrees between the four of us, along with a couple glasses of wine. The Sardi's Appetizer Sampler was a great offering as was the Five Cheese platter. For dessert, highly recommend the Sardi's frozen cake. Service and atmosphere added to the great dining experience. It's fun to guess who is in the caricatures donning the restaurant. Sardi's is a landmark but sadly it was a food disappointment. We ordered an appetizer containing a little bit of everything which was fine. For my main course I ordered the salmon and while it wasn't terrible it had noticeably been left cooking just a bit too long. On a good note, the service was great. The caricatures decorating the walls were fun to look at. I appreciate the history and the service which is the reason for the third star. I am OK with having had dinner here once but I will not go out of my way to eat at Sardi's on a return trip to Manhattan. read more

Praise for having a couple of vegetarian options--I had coconut tofu vegetable curry (I thought it was a weird option to have on the menu, but I was thankful) with mango chutney & jasmine rice, and it was actually very tasty. I also had a cheese plate as an app, and it was good, as well. My boyfriend had a sirloin, which he said was just okay. Portions were generous. For the quality of food, maybe a bit overpriced, but not too terrible, and I left satisfied. The service was a bit slow--the menus didn't arrive for about 7 minutes; our order was taken about 10-15 minutes after we got the menus. The server was at least friendly & helpful when we asked questions & made recommendations, so she gets props for that as well as making sure we had drinks. It's a good stand-by place if you're in the area, but I probably wouldn't seek it out unless I wanted to try the tiramisu everyone's been raving about :) read more

Sardi's Cannelloni is heaven on earth. I was a twenty something young woman working at the NY Times in the 1970's when I first went to Sardi's. Sardi's was our lunch and early dinner hang out. There was no better time to be in New York City. The food, the atmosphere, the service were impeccable, inspiring and just excellent all around. After 35+ years I have never gotten over the Cannelloni. I have been back a few times and was shocked that the greeter and the bartender remembered me, even remembering my name. The only thing is it seems Sardi's is the only place in New York City and even the surrounding suburbs where one can get Cannelloni. I can't even describe how delicious it is except to say I have never had a dish that I remember (except for my mother's home cooking) after 35+ years and that I can honestly say I loved. read more

Did not have any food or drink (do you count club soda as a drink?) but I will say this. Their bar snacks upstairs are disgustingly tasty. A guilty pleasure if you will. Not so much the peanuts, but the full sized Ritz crackers with a vat of what tastes like 5 cans of EZ-Cheese squeezed into a small bowl. I felt disgusting and elated while eating it... but the Ritz crackers wont get me back. My buddy ordered a Belvedere dirty martini and it was $10 while a Jack and coke was $9. Needless to say, I am glad I stayed w/ my club soda. I will say this though, all the caricatures throughout the establishment is quite impressive. After 40 years of living in NYC I finally dined at Sardi's. Really LOVED this restaurant! Despite the number of people present it was amazingly QUIET. The decor was incredibly relaxing and it was cool, temperature wise. The service was efficient and knowledgable. When we finished our appetizer, they removed the plates and placed our main course down. The main courses were hot and the correct temperature throughout. When we were tossed up between two choices the waiter, instead of describing the dishes, was decisive "The Chicken Curry is better than the Daily Special" . His suggestions were always correct. Water glasses got refilled. Coffee was $6.50 per person but look at the size of the pot! I was almost going to ask the waiter to "wrap up the rest of the coffee in a doggie bag". Really nice meal and surprisingly reasonably priced. Our appetizers were the Spinach Cannelloni au gratin which was excellent and the daily special soup, "Traditional Gazpacho" which was also excellent with the right amount of pepper. Our entrees were the Sautéed Strips of Chicken Breast in a Mild Madras Curry and Vegetable Sauce Served with Jasmine Rice and Pappadam Chips which was very good and the Grilled Marinated Center Cut Pork Chops with Peperonata, Broccoli Rabe, Roasted Rosemary Lemon Potato Wedges, Balsamic and Pork Jus Reduction which was excellent and, like it said, was a generous portion of TWO pork chops. This place was a lot better than I expected it to be. If it were not for my Groupon voucher, I would have never dined here; so glad Groupon introduced me to the deliciousness that is this restaurant. The service was excellent, our glasses were constantly topped off. Wait staff worked as a team and were very attentive. The food: The crab cakes were stellar (more crab than cake); it tasted so good I thought Sebastien was singing "Under The Sea" in my small intestine! The Cannelloni was amazing and my chicken sandwich was juicy, served with lightly toasted bread (crusts cut!!!) and crispy french fries. I don't like french fries but these were good and well-seasoned. My NY Cheesecake was also good and generously drizzled with a vanilla sauce over it that tasted like melted french vanilla Häagen-Dazs. Minor problem: The bathroom stalls were too damn tiny. I've been wanting to come here ever since I saw it on Seinfeld! I finally had the chance Sunday night for dinner before we saw a show. Just for the experience I'd say it was totally worth it. The wine list is worth it too. Both me and my husband were really surprised how reasonably priced the bottles were, nothing over $40. For its location I actually found their whole menu reasonably priced. We had the jumbo crab cake appetizer to start. I really thought it would have been 2 cakes for a serving, but the taste made up for it, soooo good! The salad it was served with was also good. We both chose from the specials menu. I had the tofu vegetable coconut curry and my husband had mahi mahi. The curry was ok. The tofu was the silky soft kind that I thought was odd for the dish. I would have preferred it to be a little firmer. My husband enjoyed his polenta his dish came with, but I tried it and thought it was dry. I actually thought it was toast at first on his plate. He offered me a taste of his mahi mahi but that looked even more dry and over cooked. So the entrees were a little disappointing. But at least I can now say I ate at Sardi's! We walked into Sardi's before going to our Broadway play to grab drinks and hang out since we were early. The atmosphere was great! It wasn't packed, and the bar tender gave a great riesling recommendation, Frtiz! The parm pizza was also a great choice, a little salty, but still good. read more

My wife and I had dinner reservations here last night. We walked in, weren't greeted by anyone at all (the host was nowhere to be found), and were only attended to after an employee off-shift greeted us. The host eventually seated us, but he didn't validate our reservation on Open Table which hurts our rating. While our waiter was very nice, the atmosphere was that of a restaurant in the twilight of its allure. There was no music. Other employees were sitting around, eating. The vibe was frankly odd and was uncomfortable. The food itself was pretty good. My chicken parm was decent as was my wife's spaghetti plate. But the "fresh" mozzarella appetizer we ordered seemed anything but. Once we paid and were heading out, there was a new host at the door. He didn't so much as smile to us on our way out. Not a nod, not a thank you, not a good evening. Just a disappointing experience all around, and with some many interesting restaurants in this area of the city I wouldn't recommend Sardi's to anyone. read more

I was a tourist and was surrounded by other tourist. If you are expecting a different crowd before a Saturday afternoon matinee you are not being realistic. My wife and I stopped in for drinks before the show and were not disappointed. A warm clubby atmosphere that comes from the patina of age was perfect. Elegant without being pretentious. The bartender reminded me of the TV butler Benson. First class service in a slightly haughty, humorous way. Upstairs the bar had a dozen martini glasses icing up so when the bartender asked it seemed foolish not to order what seemed to be the house specialty. I think the ladies complaining about being offered Cosmopolitans are missing the point. We did not have dinner so no comment on the food except to say that the bartender prepared a plate of complimentary peanuts cheese, and crackers without being asked. read more

My friend ordered wine and she was happy with it but the mixed drinks I ordered all tasted awful. This definitely worth trying once on your NYC trips when you can splurge and go before / after the theater. It really has maintained a traditional decor and you can imagine the same setting decades ago. I had the "signiature" (hate that word !!) Sardi's Cobb salad, while my son had pasta and wife and daughter had other entrees. As we went early (8 PM) before the after theater crush we had great table service being one of three occupied tables. We were on our way to Hello Dolly and Decided to pop in for a cocktail and light appetizers . We were seated immediately, our wait staff was attentive and accommodating...we had cocktails and appetizers, one in the party had dessert instead of apps. I love my steak tartare, not many places I trust to make it...it was wonderful mom loved her shrimp cocktail. Drinks were served immediately, well made, we were happy. I was with a group that was doing a program on Broadway shows and we went to Sardi's for lunch as part of the experience. Honestly, I expected a tourist trap but was pleasantly surprised to find good food, good service, and exceptional ambience. I usually don't spend much time on ambience but Sardi's is a legend and it is worth a visit just to look at the caricatures of theatre greats of the past which cover the walls. Sardi's used to be right across the street from the New York Times (that's why it's called Times Square) in the days when the Times theatre reviewers could make or break a show. It is easy to imagine the cast and investors gathered at Sardi's after the first show waiting for that critical review which could make their fortune- or not. Anyway it is worth a visit on that basis alone. In addition the food and service are much above the Times Square standard. I had an excellent French onion soup, cannelloni gratin, and finished with cheesecake. Everything was very good. Our server was actually able to communicate with us in English and seemed glad to have our business. In fact we were thanked when we left. Sardi's would be worth a visit for the food alone but the history makes a visit a must if you are in the theatre district. read more

Went to Sardi's after seeing A Bronx Tale on Broadway. We entered Inspired for some delicious Italian food. I have to say that this dinner was the worst part of our trip. First the positive: attentive wait staff, iconic character sketches of celebrity diners, and quick and easy seating after Carmine's was a mad house. We should have known that walking right in and sitting down on a Thursday night after all the shows let out was a bad sign. My BFF ordered scallops, vegetable risotto, and beans. I had a shrimp and rice dish. The risotto had no flavor and the sauces for the scallops were gross. The sauce on my shrimp looked like it had canned peas and carrots in it and tasted like canned Chef Boy R D. It cost us almost $100 for this meal with no drinks and dessert. This seems like one of the restaurants skating by on their history/having been around for a long time. My wife and I tried the risotto and scallops and it was basically rice with cheese that turned gelatinous. Scallops were poorly cooked. The wine list was okay and dessert selections were average. We went to Sardi's by default because the restaurant up the block was full. It's in a great location to the Theatre District. The caricatures on the walls are really neat. The staff was very nice and the service was great. The food however was just mediocre. I ordered the scallops entree and my husband the double crab cakes.
