We went to Sardi's for the first time after the off-Broadway show Black Angels Over Tuskeegee. We had a drink at the bar upstairs, and enjoyed the view of the street below, with theater goers, beautiful marquees,etc. The restaurant is beautiful, the service impeccable. We had a 6:30 reservation and were promptly seated. I had the crab cakes - memorable and delicious. Our dinner companion had the steak tartare, prepared with every possible ingredient option. I would not touch raw meat myself, but the 2 enjoying this dish raved about it. Another companion ordered the Chicken Sardi - it was not on the menu, but he remembered it from previous visits. It was great being in Sardis, having heard so much about it over the years. For the most part the clientele looked upscale and dressed well for a day in New York. However, I don't think there is a strict dress code at Sardi's because a few diners looked like they had just come in from doing yardwork. I think that adults going out to a restaurant like Sardi's should make an effort to dress smartly. We are paying for an upscale dining experience and don't want to look around us and see people in old jeans,baggy sweaters, messy hair. Come on people, have some self-respect. read more

The cannelloni au gratin was delicious. The melted cheese on top was perfection. The appetizer portion is rather small but was good for a quick dinner before our show. The waiters were friendly and super quick to refill our water and bread. My friends got the shrimp sardi and thought it was good. They shared it between the two of them. Originally set to dine at Carmine, but it was very crowded. Walked down a bit and saw Sardis with a lot of open tables. We realized why it was not very busy (literally 4 tables occupied). No one to greet us the host podium. A lot of wait help but not polished at all (nice enough). Long wait time for entrees... food terrible for $30. My wife's Caesar salad tasted like oil and vinegar with frozen chicken. My son's scallops were bland and cold; risotto too thick (meh). My squid ink pasta and calamari was ok but not worth the price. Sadly, this restaurant has seen its days of glory. We went as a group of 8 and had to pay $20.00 per to reserve. The food was bland, overpriced and poorly presented. I had the cannelloni dish at a cost of $28.00 U.S. that consisted of two pieces of cannelloni with a bland sauce and nothing else. A glass of wine was $16.00 U.S. and the waiter was obviously not interested in giving us good service. He gave us one bill for the whole table so we had to use a calculator to figure out what was owed by each person, then add taxes and we did not feel they deserved a tip. I would not ever go there again. Even the wonderful caricatures on the walls could not make up for the overpriced, bland food. read more

So apparently it is frowned upon to be a single woman eating alone by the host on duty 8/8/19. I was excited to give Sardi's a try after seeing a wonderful show. I was surprised how empty the restaurant was immediately after the theater across the street emptied out, but thought I would give it a try. I came in and smiled and asked if there was room for me. The older man working the host stand asked if anyone else was coming. I replied, "No, it's just me." His face promptly fell into a scowl and he turned his back and said follow me. He sat me at a table nearby and walked away without giving me a menu. I sat there for nearly 5 minutes just waiting for a menu! It appeared that none of the waiters had been assigned to me as they were quite busy. When one of them noticed me my experience changed for the better. The waiters and bussers were very kind and helpful. I ordered the pork chops which were tasty but way overcooked. But other than that I enjoyed my meal. I was seated near the host stand so I could hear his comments to other patrons as they left. He was QUITE cordial to them wishing them all a good evening. But when it came time for me to leave he again scowled at me and gave me a stearn "Goodnight!" So, to sum it up. Hospitality towards a woman dining alone was quite poor and honestly, quite hurtful. The wait staff was quite nice though. The food was good, not great, and the ambiance was charming with all the portrait drawings. I can now say I've been to Sardi's. It's unlikely I will return or recommend to anyone else. read more

Well i was ok wth the price until i got a small paper bag for the yuca and a container for the plantains. Before it was a ok box size for the fries and yuca. And it was 3 aides for about $ 23.00 now you get 2 sides but small for almost $26.00 sorry but i know you guys are not going broke with out my business. Went to Sardi's (party of 3) for pre-theater lunch. The food was terrible. Burgers were served raw and bloody (we ordered medium) and took 40 minutes to arrive at our table. Salad was covered in oil. Our waitress was incredibly rude. We won't be returning. read more

I LOVE Sardi's! I've had pre-show dinners here 4-5 times over the past few years and have consistently received excellent service & enjoyed very good food. This place is a MUST, particularly for first-time visitors. And do yourself a favor--HAVE THE CREME BRÛLÉE! It's phenomenal. read more

I usually take the kids here once a year pre theatre. The quality overall has remained the same for many years, and that is a good thing. There is so much history here it is hard to remain refined and not go up to all the caricatures and stare. The service is impeccable and not snooty. The food is top notch but not gourmet, that is not why you go here. I usually get the steak tartar and it is done properly table side. The price is not cheap but you are in a very high rent area and with the price of a Broadway ticket $200 what is another $80? That's why we only go once a year. read more

If you give this place anything less than four stars you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. I come from an east coast Italian family, and we have an Italian restaurant of our own. We all agreed it was one of the best restaurant experiences we have ever had. We put our name in for a two hour wait down the street at carmines. We strolled down the street and discovered sardis. Luckily they had an open table, and we decided to eat there instead. Best decision we ever made. If you want a chain style, crazy busy, stroller dodging experience... Go to carmines. If you want an amazing meal, great atmosphere, and good service... Go to SARDIS. Our waiter Anam was awesome, and has been there for twenty years. We had the cannelloni au gratin, for an appetizer, delicious. For entrees we had the rotisserie chicken, sirloin steak, braised short ribs, and the spaghetti pomodoro. They were all absolutely perfect. The desserts were mind blowing as well. Some people complain about the price... What do you expect? It's a legendary restaurant in manhattan!! Obviously the bad reviews are from cheap tourists trying to pinch pennies. Everything here is incredibly high quality, if that's what you want you have to pay for it. Prices were very comparable to every other restaurant in the area. I'm not an avid yelper, but we had such a great time here I felt I had to write something. read more

Perfect pre-theatre dining spot! We desperately stumbled into this place about 30 minutes before our show (without a reso) not realizing we entered Sardi's, the famous haunt for Broadway actors. Surprisingly, we were able to get in and out just in time for the curtain. The monkfish with a coconut curry sauce was absolutely amazing. Vincent Sardi opened his namesake restaurant in 1927, and while it's no longer the celebrity watering hole it once was, it's still attracts Broadway cast members - the upstairs dining room is strictly for actors with Equity cards - and is very much a New York institution. The venerable dining spot has employed a house caricaturist since its inception, and today it boasts more than one thousand drawings - ranging from old-time greats like Lucille Ball and Frank Sinatra to contemporary favorites like Whoopi Goldberg and Dame Edna - on its walls. The menu hasn't changed much over the years, although some standard dishes have been given a few touches - a dash of curry here, some mango aioli there - to give them a more international flavor. Descent food, descent wine list, descent service. Nothing spectacular about the meal. I brought my mom here after we saw Book of Mormon for the experience more than anything else. She loved all the caricatures on the wall and said her chicken cannelloni was superb. I ordered the pasta special which was orecchiette shells with a bolognese sauce, it was alright but for the price it should have been better. The salad my mom and I split was delicious and the goat cheese fritter was obviously amazing (fried cheese, duh). The Magic is gone. Faded jackets on the waiters, unchanged light bulbs and handwritten signs cast a sad pallor on this former institution. Despite the limited menu the food was poor - not one of four finished their meal. Vegetable Lasagna was virtually inedible, and cannelloni was made with nacho cheese. I'm surprised to read all the bad reviews of Sardi's. Indeed, it is a tourist spot, it does have cheesy caricatures on the wall, and it is very old-school in decor and demeanor. What everyone fails to recognize is that these are some of the exact reasons why people continue to flock here, and why it's touted as a must-do experience in NYC. It is, itself, a legend. It is what it is - you go to Sardi's to see the caricatures, to eat in the world-famous dining room, to be a part of the whole old-school experience. I think people confuse tired and old decor and people with the richness of Sardi's tradition. It's one of a kind, and they treat you like family. Food is standard Italian, and very good. I stopped in yesterday and looked around I did not have a chance to eat there yet. It has a small bar on the main level and a larger bar on the second level. The place is very cozy looking with pictures all over the walls. It looks like the 1920's to the 1940's real cool. Italian music playing. The food smelled great and I can't wait to have more time to have dinner there. read more

First time going and I was extremely disappointed. Nothing wrong with service this is based purely on food. The tomato and mozzarella tasted like it just came out of the plastic wrap and was really bland. The sirloin steak tasted like I was chewing on plastic marinated in steak sauce and onions. Tiramisu and cheesecake tasted like it was just brought off a food truck. Basically it was a very unauthentic dining experience, and I expected a much more enjoyable meal from an establishment with a name as renowned as sardi's. read more

Went to grab to have a few drinks and an appetizer before our show at St James theater. Little did I know, and without any prompt from the bartender, the "cheese and crackers" is literally a plate of pre-packaged Ritz crackers and a bowl a yellow cheese wiz. Unbelievable!! read more

My first time here and it was amazing! We ordered the oysters for appetizers and they were very fresh...this is a plus with the sea food. I strongly recommend this place. Everything was delicious. The only down side is that they need to do some reulphostory on their booths. I was sinking in a hole. Other than that everything is worth the price..waiters on point! read more

First of all want to say was expecting over priced & snooty. Could not have been more wrong. We had a reservation for pre-theater meal. The grandson met us @ the door & we were seated immediately. Our waiter was very personable & attentive & took our orders right away. Good wine menu that was very reasonable (the restaurant we frequented the night before was way overpriced & was in same neighborhood).Two of us had the crab cakes which I compare favorably to the famous Maryland crab cakes. They were fabulous. The rest of our group had the scallops which were excellent as well. The ambience was very nice & it was not too loud which is unusual in most big restaurants. In the midst of Christmas/New Year's madness - 14 gigazillion tourists mobbing Times Square and environs, we chanced to step into Sardi's and ask, "A long wait for 2?" This was at 8 pm...a perfect time between main dining and theater finales, but still...wow!) The maitre d' (wow...a LONG time since a real one, who commanded his dining room, instead of a vapid Valley Girl wannabee!) took us immedaitely to a fine table. When I asked for a banquette (nice ones on the ground floor), because of my sore back, we were immediately changed, without a hint of a need for a tip (given anyhow, since he was so gracious! - $5!). "Tiffany" gave us great service, with humor and real panache. Food was nicely served, without a rush, and the spaghetti was excellent (no heavy garlicly flavor) and so was the penne alfredo. Prices were absurdly low...most entrees were $18-30, and wine was reasonable as well. The caricatures (Walter Matthaw in his 30s, up to Rudi Guilani a few years ago) were fun, and the total ambiance was very relaxing. Checkroom was pleasant, and the matches are a fine souvenir! Why would anyone go to a chain restaurant when you can walk into history and good food? Do it. read more

Not sure what just happened. We had time In between Harry Potter one and two so we decided to dart in here and try it out. When we walked in we stood at the hostess booth while 4 servers just stared at us. After a good 45 seconds one walked over and sat us. There were only three other tables in the dining room at the time. The good news is we got water right away and they brought us over some frozen butter. We did get to choose between three breads. The server gave me three pieces of bread and my husband only one so I was nice and shared with him. I'm pretty sure the chicken pate appetizer was cat food and the bruschetta toast had been sitting out for a few days. We almost left but then felt weird so I ordered the quesadilla appetizer for dinner and my husband got chicken pasta. I think it was made by Chef Boyardee. I mean I hate to sound awful so I gave it a star because the service was good. Although the pictures on the walls will give me nightmares for a real long time. read more

The food was very good (very over-priced), I really enjoyed the caricatures of the movie stars. I was not a fan of the wait staff staring you down throughout the entire dinner. I wanted a fancy environment with great service. The service at Sardis really is perfect. It is cool to see illustrated celebrity portraits covering the walls. I thought the prices were very high for what we got. 4 scallops cooked nicely, half a cup of steamed vegetables, and risotto. The risotto is where they missed the mark. I was expecting a pile of creamy house made cheesey risotto. What I got was about a third to a half cup of what looked like tan rice, barely any cheese flavor, and a few frozen peas and tiny frozen cubed carrots mixed in. It looked and tasted like a box mix from the grocery store. Be aware, the bar tells you they can make anything they want, but they do not list the prices so ask if it matters to you. An amaretto sour was $13. I have heard that is very normal for NYC. They served bread before the meal that was so stale I would have thrown it out had I been at home. For how famous they are, it was okay, but I expected better. read more
