As soon as you walk in, it's like you're transported into a shop in Kingston. From corner to corner the shop is blessed with goodies from Jamaica. The best Jamaican food in the valley! Yeah I said it! I love me some Caribbean deliciousness and this is where we always go to get that fix. I can't even count the amount of times we've ordered take out from here! I've tried all the spots in the valley and everyone has their opinion on who they think is best, but SATTDOWN is HANDS DOWN my vote! We've gotten pretty much everything on their menu but the last time we ordered was just this week for a special dating anniversary celebration. We've been craving Sattdown for a long time so I surprised my husband with at Sattdown candlelight dinner at home! Not sure if they accidentally gave us a complementary "Fried Festival" or they just added it to be generous, but that was something we've never ordered before and will now be in our rotation because it was so tasty. I was so impressed and it didn't look as good as it tasted for sure! They should continue to give out those samples, because they'll get you hooked! I have 2 little complaints, but they still deserve 5 stars out of 5: they are hard to get ahold of (nobody answers and mailbox is full which could mean they're just THAT BUSY). But because they're hard to get ahold of sometimes we have had to settle with something else for take out quite a few times. JUST TAKE MY MONEY! Overall, the food is alright! Would I return? Probably not! I ordered the jerk chicken. My girlfriend had the oxtail. The jerk chicken was solid, not a whole bit of flavor. Was served with sauce on the side, which didn't add much of anything. However, in my opinion, where they really fell flat was on the rice & peas. It appeared they just used parboiled or parcooked rice. There wasn't ANY flavor imparted on the rice during the cooking process, sadly. Just tasteless. The sautéed vegetables weren't anything to write home about either. Much would have rather had some fried cabbage. The oxtails, on the other hand, were great. Tender. Robust in flavor. Well seasoned. Let's put it on the record that I am not an expert on Jamaican and Caribbean food other than knowing that I like it. However, I AM an expert on understanding struggle and rooting for the underdog. Picture this: you're working as a chef for a large corporation such as say, Whole Foods, and you develop an invention for the fridges that then gets stolen by management at a Santa Monica store. They bank, you lose. You decide, eff this, cash out your 401k and open your own restaurant. This takes innovative decorum and straight up balls. That's EXACTLY the background story of Chef Tony Hyde, the owner and chef of Sattdown. My kind of fella. Sattdown is Tony's baby and is a family affair with his wife manning the front of the house; and is a Caribbean sprig in the SFV. Sattdown is located smack dab in the middle of Studio City in a small strip plaza on Ventura Blvd. Upon first impression, you may glean that Sattdown is small, dive-y, and lacks bells and whistles. You would be right, my friend! Sattdown eschews the wannabe prestige of the Studio City/Sherman Oaks area and instead opts for simple esthetic that is far from fancy. The square footage is small, there aren't a ton of dining tables and some of the 'decorations' are meh like a fish tank with super funky-looking fish and (mostly old) autographed celebrity headshots. But the focus at Sattdown is the food and they are quite popular in the SFV especially for their Jamiacan patties. My dining partner and I have been trying to dine at Sattdown for years and it was finally time to get our Jerk on! The second we stepped foot into the establishment, we were welcomed by Tony's wife whom allowed us to pick our own table. There is certainly an air of family at Sattdown and one will feel comfortable whether on a date or just pigging out alone. The menu at Sattdown fits the bill for what you would expect at such an eatery: jerk chicken, oxtails, patties, seafood, stews, vegan dishes, and plenty of spice. In fact, Tony's sassy self doesn't hold back on the spice/seasonings and warns you with a sign disclaimer more or less saying that you know what you are getting yourself into with Jamaican food so stop being a cry baby and no, you won't receive a refund because a plate is too spicy. That's right, Tony! Tell em' how it is! For our meals, I decided to to be adventurous and order something I've NEVER tried before and chose the Curry Goat (Jamaican-spiced curried goat on the bone in a sauce of onions, thyme and tomatoes served with dirty rice, plantains, and steamed veggies - $16). My profession is working with goats - that's right! - but they are the breed raised for dairy consumption and not meat but I decided, it's now or never! In fact, I rarely eat meat so this was going to be wild! My dining partner went with the traditional Jerk Chicken (chicken marinated in a spicy Sattdown Jerk Marinade, baked, and then grilled served with dirty rice, plantains, and steamed veggies - $15). In line with the no-frills restaurant; Sattdown's plates arrive looking more homey than Hollywood glam yet they are beautiful in their own right. The main point is the flavor, though and Sattdown hits the nail on the head. I wouldn't recommend goat for just anyone unless you like meat that taste like goat milk/cheese but it was spiced perfectly without being overpowering, fall-off-the-bone tender and perfectly paired with the steamed veggies. I usually don't like rice but this was the best dirty rice I've EVER had! My dining partner's Jerk Chicken was equally juicy, delicious and noteworthy. He ate that up like it was his last meal on death row! My complaint? The food wasn't spicy enough for me! I need more! We somehow saved room for dessert and went with the Rum Cake. I am severely allergic to gluten but I risked by health to try a bite and holy moly! This is some AMAZING cake! Decadent, not skimping on the rum, moist... you really MUST try Sattdown's Rum Cake! It should be noted that people seem to have a HUGE issue with the fact that Chef Tony is Jamaican and of African-descent but his wife and front of house staff are Asian. Several Yelp reviews mention it and literally during my visit a group of Jamaican girls came in and immediately upon stepping foot in Sattdown: started to verbally berate Tony's wife about how this "better be good with Asians here". Um... did you all forget that thousands of ethnic eateries in LA have employees of different ethnicity working for them? That this doesn't downgrade the food? And that even YOU probably cook food at home from different cultures than your own? Calm down, people. Seriously. Tony's wife kept her cool and did not engage in an argument. Whether you are a Caribbean food expert or not; Sattdown is worth a try. The food is excellent, the vibe is down-home, and customer service is on-par. And that Rum Cake! Can't forget that Rum Cake! We got take out here for the first time last month. I can't comment on the ambience or service because of not eating there. My partner and I are both vegan and we are so happy that they had vegan specified entrees on the menu. We've been to Jamaica before and were craving some Caribbean food. Unfortunately this food didn't have a ton of flavor and it was extremely oily. There were only 3 slices of plantains which was too bad because those seemed to be the only part with flavor. There wasn't many vegetables in the dish which was disappointing. I'd give this another try as maybe it was an off night but the amount of oil was a major turn off. The jerk chicken bbq was pretty awesome because it had a nice smokey flavor along with the spices. A very flavorful chicken. The oxtail was also pretty good. Their drunken coconut shrimp was amazing. This dish really reminds of eating by an island. Haha. Even their festival bread - which is kind of like a Jamaican donut - was really tasty. I want to also add that Chef Tony was also very accommodating and personable. Look out for him when you come here! If you haven't been to Sattdown, check this place. It is considered by many to be one of the best Jamaican restaurants in LA. I believe it. We ordered in yesterday and oh my God, the food was terrible. I could only get through 50% of my rice and peas, which had a red beans and rice consistency, before I threw my whole meal away. The jerk chicken isn't quite how my family does it, but their recipe is pretty dang good and frankly, it makes it hard to order the other menu items I also love eating.
