You are treated like family as soon as you step in the door. The owners are wonderful people as well as the staff. I have had many family functions in the back room. Pretty sad.... We usually eat here or get carry out several times a year. Tonight we ordered a carryout and my husband found a piece of black plastic in his mashed potatoes. They also forgot the bread I ordered with my soup. Since we live within a mile of the restaurant, my husband put the piece of plastic in a baggie and took it back to show the manager. His response..."oh yeah that's a piece of plastic from the mashed potato bag". Never offered to give my husband a new helping of potatoes or anything. Very disappointing! read more

Quick, in and out. Efficient service. Brisk. No nonsense. Definitely a locals type of place, the server said hello by name to two different tables. Food was typical for the restaurant type, with a huge menu of food that is sure to appeal to most people. Food is decent, family diner type. A bit heavy on the grease but that's to be expected . Table and booth seats were a bit grimy, pepper container was sticky. But you get what you pay for, and the prices were not expensive. Clean, Fresh Fast food. We decided on having some carry out, while we arent picky eaters my son only really eats Saganaki when we eat out. We ordered a Saganaki, Greek Wrap and Chicken Palomino which all tasted great! Thats now something you can say when ordering carry out as the food tends to get soggy and nasty. Couldn't eat it there was hair in both my saganaki and alfredo. Saganaki was almost fully Burnt which made me look at it to find the first hair. Moved on to eat the chicken Alfredo and found another hair. Only good thing was the chicken noodle soup. Threw away the rest of the food. Waste of $30, won't be eating here again. read more

Normally would get 4 stars but we just had a pretty lousy meal from there. Burgers, Patty melts and shishkabob. The shishkabob meal we ordered it with a red sauce they have and when we got home no sauce. The beef kabob was tough. Very little taziki sauce. Both Patty Melts had only one single piece of onion on them and Pattie's were so much smaller than the bread which I thought is supposed to be rye and it wasn't. Burger was supposed to have onions too but got none. And this was at 8 pm when not busy so very disappointed. read more

Went to try a different restaurant for breakfast today and had an Italian sausage and cheese omelet. It was pretty tasty, only problem I had was about an hour after I ate it I starting not feeling well. Not sure if it was the food or something else. Anyway, it was good and I am willing to go back. After reading all the stellar reviews by many Yelp regulars, I knew that I just had to try a meal here. I was headed across Hall Road on my way to a movie house, but I didn't want to fill up on popcorn for supper (even tho I topped it off with theater popcorn later). Using Yelp's Ron C. from Rochester as my guide, I found his review for Savory Grill, just two blocks north of Hall road on the east side of Van Dyke. As I pulled into their driveway, I saw 3 cars leaving - and we all know what that means when lots of people are leaving - either the food was bad, or they were simply done with their meal. I guess since the parking lot was nearly full at 5:30 in the afternoon on a weekday, I should have just been glad that some parking spaces opened up. Once inside, the sign said a hostess will seat me, so I looked over the daily specials white board set up just inside the entrance way. There were several selections listed, as well as the soups of the day. Usually, when they have a specials board, I don't even need a menu. This visit was no different - I selected the hot beef sandwich with a side salad and home made mashed potatoes. My salad had bleu cheese dressing on the side, the mashed potatoes shared gravy from the sandwich, my drink came in a tall glass and didn't need a refill, especially since a tall glass of water was also provided. A great meal from a local diner. Sorry, no pictures - it was so good, you would have just seen empty plates by the time I took a pause in my meal. Service was great. There were several wait staff taking care of tables, as well as a busboy clearing plates. Timing was great. I was seated in the main dining area, a room lined with booth seating. There was also another area off to the side that had additional seating, with a mixture of booths and tables. As I sat during my meal, I thought perhaps a senior's bus had stopped by, because of all the little old men and women coming in with assistance, and headed to that overflow room. No, it was just that the older folks in the area know where the good food for a good price at a great restaurant can be found. Sure enough, I peeked into the side room, there they were, all sitting together at a communal table, friends together sharing an evening meal. I had an opportunity to visit the men's room. As with the rest of the business, it was impeccably clean, able to meet the highest standards of clean & fresh. I paid my bill and walked out, knowing I was just opening up a parking space for the next hungry patron looking for a good meal in downtown Utica. read more

When we walked in I notice the tables were still distanced the waitresses, hostess and customers were all wearing masks. Carry out consisted of a savory pita, which I've gotten several times before. Grilled chicken, grilled onion/peppers/pineapple, Swiss cheese and tzatziki sauce, all wrapped in a thick fluffy pita ($6.99). I went deluxe and added fries and cole slaw ($1.99), and added a bowl of clam chowder soup ($3.49) since it was Friday. The pita was amazing, as always. This thing is huge and easily could make for 2 meals. It's loaded with fresh grilled chicken and as odd as it seams, the onion/pepper/pineapple/tzatziki sauce combination mingles deliciously together. The amount of fries I was given was equally as huge as my pita, but I probably should have opted for a different side, as they were super soggy when I get them home. Not sure if they were undercooked or not, as they have always been amazing when I've eaten them in the restaurant- crispy and hot. I'll note to get rice or a side salad instead next time I get carry out. The side of cole slaw is fresh made and delicious, the fattening goodness mayo kind- but not over dressed. The soup was the bomb this time, and not in a good way. Clam chowder it was not, more like cream of potato soup. My "bowl" had 1 lonely clam piece in it and no clam flavor what-so-ever. It was literally all potatoes and carrots in a very thick milk/flour base. The chicken noodle here is great, wish I would have went with that. I'll be back, as I have more Groupons. I really like the Savory Grill. I can't say this about many restaurants, but this one in particular saved my life :). Last winter I came down with the plague (not really, I just had a pretty miserable cold) and my wife ordered some chicken noodle soup from this joint. It was super tasty and I'll forever remember that moment when my spirits were lifted and the clouds parted to reveal a glimmer of hope for my soul. Ever since I tried the soup, I have officially changed my Friday morning breakfast spot. The first time I ate breakfast here I gave the blueberry pancakes a whirl. Most places inundate the cake with too many blueberries. They also douse the exterior of the cake with the canned blueberry sauce. I like it, but I didn't really appreciate good blueberry pancakes until I visited this place. The pancakes are pretty fluffy with the right amount of density. The berries are whole and not mushy. They also have a bit of a crunch to them so you know they aren't over cooked. I really like them. I've written in other reviews that I'm not a doctor...and that's still true. I didn't go to 7 years of pancake school. Therefore, the cakes here are just right for me...but maybe not for you :) The thing I really love about this restaurant: they serve really good food, it's pretty clean (considering the amount of individuals that pass through this culinary institution) and the wait staff is friendly. Also, the food comes out of the kitchen quickly.
