Horrible service and food. I ordered to go but decided since i was so hungry I would stay for my app. The app was summer rolls. Only tofu, but usually that's fine BUT they had a sliver of tofu and only carrots, shredded lettuce, and hardly any rice noodles. No basil or mint like most restaurants. No one checked to see how I was doing, and only stopped by to drop off the check. When I expressed my disappointment, there was no response only taking my payment. The kicker, I asked if I had the correct order (after I tasted it before leaving, and it was tasteless), he said IDK what ever it is that you ordered. Never will I return, and never would I recommend the restaurant. Now if the food was fantastic, I may suck it up but...the food and service is a zero. Sawanee has been on my radar ever since I read about them in a Hartford Courant article a while back. Finally got there this evening, and happy I did. Decent sized parking lot. Greeted and seated quickly. I opted for the basil fried rice w chicken and a Thai iced tea. Beverage came out quicky, with the entree following in a reasonable amount of time. Delicious. Plenty of chicken and veggies perfectly spiced over fried rice. Priced fairly. Not an overabundance of food, but just the right amount for me (we tend to overeat anyway). Service was outstanding. Dada, who's worked there for 10 years, checked on me numerous times. Very friendly, efficient, and personable. The owner, AJ, also checked on me several times. Also very personable. Date night with the hubby was good but would have been better if our food was great. Our server was very friendly. She never told us her name so I'm not able to say who it was. The decor was fitting for the type of cuisine we had since it was Thai food. We did have an unwanted guess buzzing around us which annoyed my husband who kept having to swap it away lol. I absolutely love Thai food but the sauce for the calamari was too watery and I was not impressed with the taste of their Pad See Ew. For some reason the broccoli and carrots were not seasoned. I will say that the shrimp was Cooked perfectly. My husband did enjoyed his deep fried snapper with basil. We did have dessert which was high light of dinner. Spicy fried calamari was not spicy at all. Came with a small side of sweet chili sauce. I must say the portion sizes for the price we're just really small and it was disappointing I just didn't feel that it had the right spice that I enjoyed. Today, I am doing a rare lunch review. I have a lot of errands to run including a facial (for my oily skin), emissions (for my Lucerne) and primary card physician (for phlegm in my throat). I haven't been here in years but I do think it's one of the best for Thai food. There are two menus, lunch and dinner (available all day). For my drink, I'm having lychee juice. I've never had this before (except with Grey Goose vodka). This comes in a mason jar. Yummy . I love these things. The lychee is a tropical tree native to the Guangdong, Fujian, and Yunnan provinces of Southeast and Southwest China, where cultivation is documented from the 11th century. China is the main producer of lychees, followed by Vietnam, India, other countries in Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, Madagascar and South Africa. A tall evergreen tree, the lychee bears small fleshy fruits. The outside of the fruit is pink-red, roughly textured, and inedible, covering sweet flesh eaten in many different dessert dishes. Lychee seeds contain methylene cyclopropyl glycine which can cause hypoglycemia associated with outbreaks of encephalopathy in undernourished Indian and Vietnamese children who had consumed lychee fruit. For my appetizer, I'm having the Fresh Spring Rolls, or Poh-Piah Sod, made with stuffed fresh vegetables, tofu and rice noodles. They come with a dipping sauce made with a chili sauce and thick, creamy peanut sauce. I prefer this to the Vietnamese version. For my salad , I'm having the Papaya Salad , or SomTum, mixed with garlic tomatoes , string beans and peanuts . "Spicy rating you ask (1-5)"? 5, please. Not bad for a heat level of 5. I can feel it! This is great ! I didn't realize it comes with rice (dinner-sized version). Note how they kept the rice in a sealed basket and wrapped in plastic. For my soup , I'm having the Galanga Broth (chicken or shrimp ) with chicken or Tom Kah. This is a mild, delicious coconut soup made with galanga, lemongrass and lime juice. Yeah! This is slightly sour and unimaginably good ! What a unique taste ! Alpinia galanga, a plant in the ginger family, bears a rhizome used largely as an herb in Unani medicine and as a spice in Arab cuisine and Southeast Asian cookery. It is one of four plants known as "galangal". Its common names include greater galangal, lengkuas, and blue ginger. For my entrée, I'm having, off of the "Sawadee Recommendations" portion of the menu, the Beef Macadamia. This one has no Thai translation. Beef and macadamias?! That's an interesting combination. By the way, if you have a peanut allergy, stay home. It's in everything. Anyhow, this is made with cubed steak sautéed with macadamia nuts , pineapple , carrots , mushrooms , bell peppers, baby corns , onions , scallions and fresh ginger. You have to love the carrot flower ! This also comes with (exposed) rice. This tastes very fresh! Yummy ! For my dessert , I'm having the Mango Delight which is fresh mango with sweet coconut sticky rice , topped with coconut milk and sesame seeds. You need to try this! Nonr of this is making it home ! My family and I ordered food out from here before dinner. We got the chicken pad Thai, drunken noodles, chicken satay, golden bags, and vegetable spring rolls. The spring rolls and golden bags were delicious. They were filled completely, and they did not skimp on the vegetables or meat. The chicken pad thai and the chicken satay were delicious, and the peanut sauce that went along with it was incredible. All of the dishes had very good portions, and were filling for a meal, and could actually be two meals. I will warn you, however, that the drunken noodle is delicious, however, very spicy. I was not expecting it to be spicy or as spicy as it was. A meal was delicious, the spice did take away from the flavor and overall experience. The staff is so friendly and hard-working and are always fielding a number of different tasks in the restaurant. They have great boba drinks in a number of flavors. I love their pad Thai as it's always quite tasty. I have ordered with extra chicken in the past as the serving is large and I can make 2 meals out of it. I stopped in here with my mom on a Thursday afternoon to enjoy some lunch. I pass this place all the time since I live in the area and have never tried it so was happy we were finally heading in. They are located in a small plaza with plenty pf parking and an easy to spot sign out front. The inside was cozy and cute, I enjoyed the decor and overall atmosphere. The servers were quick to seat us and take our order. They were also friendly and explained any questions well. The food was amazing. We got the duck curry and a hot basil, both lunch portions, and were amazed to see how large the portions were and how good the food was. Quality ingredients and flavorful. I really love Sawadee and its my go to joint for Thai in the Manchester area. The staff is extremely friendly, the portions larger than average, and the prices quite reasonable. There is plenty of seating inside, but it can get a bit crowded during peak times. There aren't many Thai options in this area....so,if others want to get their Thai on you should plan accordingly. They do a great take out service too and always fill my order within 30 minutes. I normally get the Crispy Basil Duck and its delicious. For this visit I went with the Hot Basil Pork and my girlfriend ordered the Chicken Pad Thai. Both were wonderful and had just the right amount of spice and heat. I have never been a huge Pad Thai fan, but after tasting hers I may need to add it to my Thai repertoire. The Crispy Spring Rolls were also solid. Mmmm...Four years ago I gave Sawadee a chance, and I was not impressed. I was a Thai food virgin at the time, so I really had no idea how to conceptualize what good Thai food actually is. The look on my girlfriend's face (Thai-taster extraordinaire) gave me the idea that this food just wasn't ideal. Over the past four years I have had the pleasure of Thai-ing at several different spots in CT, MA, NY, NJ, SC, FL, and TX. While all have their ups and downs as far as service, when I get Thai I'm not looking for a white-napkin type of dinner. I want really, really good food, served reasonably fast...and I want to bring some home with me to eat as a midnight snack or for lunch the next day. After seeing the wealth of positive reviews coming from this place, I decided to give it another try. I went back for the staples - curry, pad thai, tom yum, and veggie spring rolls. I don't doubt that other dishes have merit and are tasty, but the second time around...it was still just plain okay. The tom yum soup was way too oily - I don't mind seeing a few dark red bubbles on top of my soup as I know that is fairly normal, but the entire top of the bowl was covered in oil, so I had to dig around to get my shrimp, tomatoes, and mushrooms -- leaving (and not slurping down) the rest of the broth as I usually do. Sad panda. The yellow curry was okay -- it too was oily despite being generally tasty. Veggie Spring rolls are a pretty standard catch, they were crisp and the sauce was really good. The pad thai - oh...pad thai. No matter the meat you choose, this dish just doesn't stack up. Sure, you get a lot, but I find it to be inordinately dry and a bit excessively limey for the type of dish it is supposed to be. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but nothing I would drive miles out of my way to get. Overall, despite how close this food is to my dad's house, I don't know (barring weather that prevents us from crossing the river) that I'll go back here for Thai food when I'm really in the mood for it. Three stars? Yes. It really isn't BAD food, so I hate to knock the restaurant for that. It's just...compared to what is considered really, really good Thai...Sawadee still just doesn't stack up. In the area? Want Thai? Trust me? Thai Palace in Bloomfield is a little bit of a hike, but they serve some of the nicer Thai food in the general area. Another notable mention is Thai Angel in South Glastonbury. Want to travel? Head south to Spice in Manhttan for a decidedly **** meal, or north to The Simalins in Cambridge, MA for what I consider ***** Thai. read more

Came here with a friend for lunch today for my first real Thai experience (because Pad Thai from an American-Chinese takeout place doesn't count). Being a Sunday afternoon, there were a few tables occupied, so it wasn't loud or cramped. Both of us ordered Jasmine hot tea, which came in two cute little individual tea pots, which was delightful. My friend ordered the Yum Sawadee (boneless duck mixed with tomatoes cucumbers, and mint), and I got the yellow curry with potatoes, carrots, onions, and extra beef. Both of us ordered our dishes mild. We also split a mango sticky rice pudding for dessert. Flavor-wise, the main dishes were great! They do their "mild" curry quite well; it had the perfect hint of spice without being punch-you-in-the-face overwhelming. I also tried a bit of her Yum Sawadee, and it was delicious; savory, but light. It's something I'd definitely eat on a hot summer's day. The mango rice pudding was interesting; mango was fresh, but the taste was odd to me. Not bad at all, just not my cup of tea. My only complaint here was that I was charged $3 for extra beef in my curry, and I felt that what I got was a normal size portion. Maybe this is just coming from me being used to giant portions in American restaurants, I'm not sure. Also, the rice portions were on the small side as well. In a culinary craft where most restaurants don't stand out Sawadee sets themselves apart from the rest. Sawadee is located on the Manchester, CT, South Windsor, CT town line, only a couple of minutes from the Buckland Hills Shopping area and Evergreen walk, 15 minutes from downtown Hartford. Dishes are an excellent combination of spicy and sweet with a vast variety of dishes for all. In my personal opinion there is a drop off from the signature dishes but people have different tastes. Far and away better than any other Thai restaurant in Connecticut. My recommendations would be the following: Lunch: (Come for Dinner for the full experience) Appetizers: Angel Shrimp Spicy Calamari Thai Ice Tea Tom Yum Shrimp Soup Entree: Basil Duck Crab Fried Rice (special item) Drunken Noodle Pad See Eew The basil and hot basil dishes are the perfect combination of spicy and sweet and offer meat that is succulent, moist and flavorful. The Tom Yum Shrimp soup is a winter time favorite of mine. Dress is casual, and atmosphere is good for children and parties of less than 6. Average price per person reflects drink, appetizer and entree, lunch options in my opinion are some what bland but still good, especially in comparison to other Pad Thai restaurants in Connecticut. Same overall review as before, food seems nice and fresh, came out nice and hot, and for added fun we asked for the "pepper tray" and they brought out extra sauces and what not. The food was milder than I would normally like, but that was an easy fix with the pepper tray on hand. Cute, courteous and attentive waitresses. Was an all around nice dinner experience. Place was hopping too, with the full gambit of age ranges. The curry would have been good but it was overly salty and I had to down a few glasses of water to compensate. The spicy calamari is nothing special, what makes it good is the spicy sauce provided on the side.... otherwise it would just be regularly fried calamari.
