We stopped here for dinner before a show at the History Theater. It's only a short walk from there. I had a reservation but there were plenty of seating options. It's almost like two store fronts merged into one restaurant. We had a nice table in the back and turned down the offer to sit at the window to stay cozy and warm in the back. For dinner, we shared the basics, pot stickers, edamame and fried rice. Everything was served piping hot and was flavorful. The pot stickers had a nice crisp to them. The fried rice came with cooked tomatoes and fresh raw cucumbers. We couldn't finish the huge portion of rice so I'll have lunch on another day. Staff was awesome. Fresh roses on the tables were a nice touch. Great stop.

Chicken satay and jalapeño cream cheese wontons

How have I never left a review of Sawatdee before? This has been a downtown favorite of mine for many years. When I worked just a few blocks away, this was always a popular spot for happy hour, with several appetizer selections for $5-7 and a couple bucks off of select adult beverages. My absolute favorite apps are jalapeño cream cheese wontons and chicken satay. The peanut sauce is just amazing. For dinner dishes, I can never pass up the tropical fried rice (pineapple). This is always a fave of mine at any Thai restaurant. I also enjoy the Pad Thai here as well. Biggest reason for knocking a star off is the spice level is wildly inconsistent here. I can get a 3 star one day that is milder than a 2 star another day and other days where a 3 star would be a 5 star other places. I have gotten used to just getting a mild 1 or 2 star and asking for the side of spice jars if I need it.

Supenns Fresh Spring Roll

We wanted Thai for dinner and a friend recommended this place. It's not fancy but it is very good. We started with Supenn's Fresh spring rolls. Big, light, delicious. For the entree, I had Sawatdee mussels. Big green mussels and vegetables in a nice curry sauce. It also came with rice that I mixed with the curry & vegetables. Loved it! A note to the wise: reservations are required. Without, you may or may not be able to be sat.

Thai Fried rice with chicken at medium spice level.

I have been to the St Paul Sawatdee many times but wanted to update my review. Still some of the best Thai food around! The food here is amazing....from the appetizers (the appetizer platter is a great deal and allows you to try a few different things. The Sue's egg rolls are amazing (but greasy...but SO tasty)! I almost always get their Thai Fried rice with chicken and my husband gets the Cashew Chicken. Yes...we should try new things, but sometimes you just love something so much it's hard to make a change. My family have tried the curries and soups and several of the other items and I have never seen someone not rave about what they ate. Watch the spice here. If you tell them a higher spice level it is going to be HOT!! We stay at a medium because we've gotten cocky in the past and regretted it ;) The drinks are VERY tasty and they are not weak...I'll just say that. They have an excellent Happy Hour that is every day from 4-6pm and has a lot of great deals on appetizers and drinks!! Definitely check that out even on the weekend! The restaurant is located downtown but there is metered parking on the street nearby and also a couple of parking ramps/lots that you could utilize. The restaurant itself is looking a little rundown here and there, but is clean so it doesn't detract from how wonderful the food and service is so it isn't a problem. It's clean and comfortable with both tables and some half booths / tables as well. Great place, wonderful food and terrific service!

Cream Cheese Wontons

I work on the edge of southern downtown Saint Paul with no good food options. Our building is by industrial companies so there were no food options whatsoever. But this day, I didn't bring lunch so I had to order take out and pickup my food. I have so much love for this place. The staff are great and courteous. I put in an online order at noon and it was ready by 1pm. My food was still hot and fresh and they provided me extra chili peppers if I needed them. The cream cheese wontons were crispy and crunchy which I loved. The pad Thai had the perfect amount of spice but I added the chili oil for even more spice. Sawatdee has always been one of my favorite Thai places and I will continue to go back.

Three ate for under $60.

They are offering take out and dine in. Everyone was wearing masks. We had great service at Sawatdee. They offer a happy hour menu which was very affordable ($4 per dish). The vegetarian pot stickers were our favorite. We also ordered the pad Thai and Pineapple red curry with chicken. It came with a very generous amount of chicken. The flavors of both dishes were phenomenal. Three of us ate well for under $60. Well worth it.

This used to be a good place but when they moved to Robert Street they lost something. Not worth the prices they charge.

Because we were on a date night cooking night we were given a token for a complementary alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages, and there were more available for purchase. I would like to take another class for a different theme. Also, there's a big parking lot in the back and street parking available which made it convenient.

I went with Bret and a small group for my 50th birthday in September 2025 to Nice, France. It is still the most memorable trip of my life and for all the right reasons. We enjoyed laid back French breakfasts with the group. Amazing Nicoise style dinners. A tour of Nice. Picturesque drives to vineyards and nearby towns and of course each other's company. If you are a Francophile or budding Francophile (for the France tours) and have a deep curiosity for travel, culture, food and language then consider taking a culinary trip with Bret. It's more curated, he's thoughtful on who he finds to assist with local activities, the restaurant selection is fabulous, and the cost is less than a lot of companies out there. The bonus is that plenty of free so he does not focus on monopolizing your time for tours and restaurant visits. If you're rather inexperienced like I am, and have no clue what meals to prepare or what dishes to present, you can ask Bret, and he'll come up with a menu. His private classes can range from teaching one special dish or dessert, to teaching you how to make a multi-course dinner. Let him know what you'd like to learn. If you're a beginner, also plan some time for learning cooking techniques and knife skills. What to expect: I booked Bret's Table for a small dinner party themed event, where the guests were invited to help in the preparation of the dishes that would be presented for dinner. Not knowing what to make for the dinner party, I asked Bret to help me come up with dishes to prepare. We came up with a 6 course dinner plan. If you already know what you'd like to learn, you can make that specific request instead. Through emailing, Bret provided me with recipes and the list of ingredients I needed. Because I was a nervous wreck hosting my first ever Dinner Party at my home, Bret was kind enough to show up early to help me get acquainted with some of my kitchenware before the guests arrived. He showed up nicely dressed with his white Chef shirt, apron, and twirly mustache! We designated areas in my kitchen as stations to prepare each different part of the dinner. Starting with appetizers all the way through dessert. Bret was very attentive and helped give directions to each guest. Everyone had a great time learning and cooking together. It's a great way to build friendships! And during the down time, the people who worked on the less demanding dishes drank wine. The dinner itself was amazing! The food tasted great, the company was great, and by the end of the night, we went through 10 bottles of wine. Not bad for an eight person dinner lol! Ok, ok, maybe a bottle was used in the cooking. I highly recommend hiring Bret from Bret's Table. He's very professional and friendly, and did I mention the cool mustache?!! And it speaks for his reputation for the fact that my dinner guests immediately hired him for their own dinner party after meeting him for the first time. It will be a fun experience for all, especially if you are cooking with friends! Also, how amazing is it that you get to work with the chef in your own home? Great fun! Highly recommended!

They asked each of us why we'd were taking the class and genuinely tried to tailor the experience and instructions to meet as many people's requests and needs as possible which I greatly appreciated. They went above and beyond to make us feel special and took time to answer all of our food and kitchen related questions, even if it didn't relate to sushi. We have tried making sushi at home before but always felt like something was missing or we would struggle with certain aspects of the process. However, many of the people in the course had never made sushi before so this was a great class for beginners of all skill levels! Besides the sushi rice & tempura shrimp tails being pre made and some of the sauce ingredients being pre-portioned out, we made all of the other filling ingredients! We started by learning the best way to julienne a cucumber for sushi rolls & then how to slice up an avocado. Once that was done, we made a marinade for each of our fresh tuna steaks and were able to sear them to our liking! Once all of our ingredients were prepped, we rolled two different sushi rolls, one with shrimp & one with tuna and both were so tasty. What I truly loved was that everyone had their own ingredients to make their own two rolls. This allowed each of us to not only have an abundance of food at the end, but we also got to test our own skills out and learn from hands on experience. I can't wait to bring these new skills to life in my own kitchen. We also got a miso soup at the end which was amazing.
