I've been a fan of Sawatdee forever. It's like a friend that you see every now and again where the conversation picks up right where you left it. The best spring rolls in my life come out of the Sawatdee kitchen; so fresh and generously stuffed! And for all my visits and all my new-tries, it's gotta be Holy Basil Supreme. The sharp anise bite of the Thai basil tempers the fire perfectly. The mushrooms, while not as big as your head, are an awsome co-star on the plate. If you like crispy flavor bombs, get this dish with tofu. The texture perfectly absorbs the sauce and creates a flavorful feedback loop. Parking is street-only at this location, but it's Saint Paul. Sad! Sawatdee has always been my favorite Thai restaurant. Haven't been here in a year and am sad to say the quality has REALLY gone down! They changed their delicious peanut sauce for the spring rolls to be the vinegar based kind. The "vegetarian" pad Thai had a strange curry flavor and zero vegetables besides the green onion garnish. Was in town again and hit my favorite, Sawatdee. Check the pics, we went to town! We ordered two of everything off the Happy Hour apps menu. The standouts were the shrimp, the mussels, and the calamari. And the chicken satay. And the fried spring rolls . . . The service was above and beyond. I think the guy"s name was Forrest. We got there shortly before Happy Hour ended, and half our group hadn't arrived yet, but we wanted to place the app order in time for the deal. Forrest said that he'd put the order in now and they'd wait to cook it until the rest of the party arrived. And once everybody was there . . . it was full on food madness. I don't know how he kept up. He was a real trooper, he was great about a couple of special orders on entrees, he was friendly and outgoing, and he helped make a great night even better. I came here to get some take-out to eat with my girlfriend. It's located in Downtown Saint Paul and only metered street parking is available. The restaurant itself was pretty big and moderately clean, but service is on the slower end. I ordered take-out and the guy said it would take 30 minutes.. as he said it was really busy. When I got there, not even half the restaurant was full and it was like 8PM. Still had to wait even more upon arriving. Now onto the food.. I ordered the tropical fried rice with tofu, which is like Pineapple fried rice at many other locations. It was pretty disappointing. It lacked flavor and it lacked ingredients. It was really oily and greasy. It was like bland rice stirred up in tofu, some veggies, few pineapple chunks here and there. It was seriously lacking flavor. I also ordered it medium spice, and I tasted no spice at all.. I wish I asked for Sriracha or something so I can drench it in it. I don't usually outside sauce unless the dish lacked flavor. My girlfriend got Pad Thai and she said it was not good as well.. I probably won't be coming back here as there are many other Thai places to try. It was pretty pricey too.. 15 bucks a entree. My favorite Thai restaurant in Roseville has set the bar extremely high, so I'm probably overly critical of other Thai restaurants... As for Sawatdee, I typically visit the Maple Grove location since I'm in that part of town more often. My favorite menu item is the Pad See Yew and this location does deliver a pretty good option! The service was fast at 7pm on a Thursday evening and the spice level was pretty close to what I was hoping for. There was a good amount of chicken along with American broccoli and larger chunks of scrambled egg. There definitely could have been more sauce (rice noodles tend to soak up sauce quickly). Also, my local Thai place will "crisp" it so that the sweet soy caramelizes onto the noodles to add more depth of flavor. I truly appreciate the abundance of GF options and was pleased with my experience overall! read more

Cute place, I like the blue walls inside but it is a bit loud as it's in an old repurposed industrial space with high ceilings and exposed pipes. I have had lots of Thai food all my life and we were pretty let down with the food tonight. We did really like the fresh spring rolls and the Holy Basil Supreme dish with chicken but I feel they should have served it with more rice. Two small cups for 4 of us was not really enough especially as Thai food has great sauces not to waste. My Mom really wanted some good Tom Ka Guy,the chicken soup with coconut milk, mushrooms and lemongrass but it was lacking something crucial that always gives the soup a light orange tint. Over various visits, I've had the veggie spring rolls, cream cheese wontons, veggie Pad Thai, red curry with veggies and coconut milk, and spicy noodles. In the noodle or curry dishes, I'm typically disappointed at the quantity of vegetables in the dish. When I've visited dining with meat eaters, they've been satisfied with their chicken or other meat portions in their dishes. It seems like the cooks just use the same amount of veggies regardless of whether there is added protein or it is a meat-free dish, rather than adding extra for a veggie-only dish as most places do. Service is mediocre and not overly attentive or friendly. Atmosphere is fine, but leaves a little to be desired. Overall, has the potential for more, but falls a little short of greatness. Ok so this review is only for the Tom Yum Soup (entree size). I came in on a cold and windy fall evening and was craving something warm. Plus I had the sniffles and this soup is kind of like medicine in a bowl. The soup here didn't fail. It was delicious and lifted my energy and helped with my sinuses. It's a large bowl so be prepared to bring some home or share. Also I have a pretty average spice tolerance and told my server to make it a "2" -- that's probably as spicy as I can take it when served hot. ... Horrible acoustics! Do not go here with elderly parents who have trouble hearing, lots of bare concrete especially in the back room(ask not to be seated there if you can). They have large portions of food that are shareable. They don't box food for you and they have this weird checkout system called toast that asks you to rate your experience with the server looking over your shoulder thumbs up or down and it also defaults to a 25% tip. Won't be back soon. In response to the response- Is it the job of the customer to speak up and give critical feedback when you're out to enjoy the evening? I suppose it's time to add a bit of praise to my previous review, as the quality of the food at Sawatdee has noticeably improved over the past few months. They've tweaked the menu a bit and I've found that orders requested spicy actually come as requested (they also will provide a tray of peppers, chili oil, etc. upon request). Alas, the service is still very hit and miss, they have toned down their happy hour a bit and in general prices are fairly high given the amount of more affordable Thai options available nearby. All-in-all still a decent place to hit up every once in awhile as I still like the ambiance and the fact that they have a decent tap list, but I'd still recommend a number of other Thai joints in St. Paul first if solely looking for food. If looking for reasonably good Thai food and a cozy ambiance to have a few drinks, Sawatdee fits the bill. read more

Im giving a one star due to the fact I believe it's not actually a authentic thai restuarant. The 3 times I've tried their food was just totally bland and spice level wasn't even close to being thai. The name sawatdee would make you think it's gotta be legit authentic thai food, but nope. Should be American sawatdee thai food. There flavors were more catered towards westerners than it is to thai/ Asian. Each time I ordered spice level hot, i even pointed out thai hot and Asian hot, I still got no spice at all. The papaya salad wasn't even close to any papaya salad at any other thai joint I had gotten from. The thai beef jerky that comes with the papaya salad lacked flavor and cuts was just too thick. I say the only thing made right was sticky rice lol. And if you ordering thru grubhub for pick up. Make sure she don't make you pay again at the restaurant when you already have payed with card on app. This happened to me and it threw me off. She the owner I believe during that time got me to pay at the restaurant saying they needed to make sure I pay with right card which im thinking.. oh they checking I have the card which is payed with. Didn't think anything. I also put tip Just because she was so nice which I didn't need to since im picking up. So I get the food and go home. I realized im charged TWICE. This place just played me. I should've known something was odd having to give her my card again and signing a receipt. Typical Asian RIP off I should've known with that being so nice attitude. Im Asian my self and should've caught that, but I was just in a rush. And second of all I called grubhub and explained and they called the restaurant and asked why she charged me again for when I went to pick up the food when it's paid in the app!! I love the decor and the casual vibe at Sawatdee. Unfortunately, the ambiance is better than the food. This is why you're more likely to find me here during happy hour with appetizers and cocktails than during the dinner hour. It's a great place to hang out. I just wish the food was better. The Pad Thai is 'wet.' It has a bland, watery sauce that drips off the noodles and pools on the plate instead of clinging to the noodles. To me, this is a serious mistake for any Thai restaurant to make. Sauces need to be think enough to cling to noodles and hold their flavors. In the best scenario, noodles are also tossed with their sauce in a pan over fire, long enough to create random, saucy sear marks of flavor. The other serious mistake at Sawatdee is their level of spice (aka 'heat'). Their scale seems off because the 'medium' Pad Thai I ordered was bland and flavorless.I could see the peppers that they had added, but they didn't cling to the noodles. Maybe that was the problem? Alternatively, it might be that they brought me someone else's Pad Thai by mistake. I ordered Pork Pad Thai and they brought me shrimp. Appetizers are good here. The beef egg roll was notably good. It was large, crispy and beefy. It was a 'sweet' egg roll with a 'sour' sauce. It set a tone to the meal that entrees didn't live up to. Sawatdee is a place that I really want to like. It's in my neighborhood, within easy walking distance. I'll keep going back from time to time, with high hopes, seeking better food. read more

It's essentially lime- & cilantro- & ______-flavored spicy beef over lettuce, with a side of more lettuce & cucumber. That's a lame description of a delicious, simple dish. The flavor of the beef, mingling the tang and brightness of the lime juice with the cilantro & spicy heat... it was just delicious! Two of my staples when bringing family and friends to eat at Sawatdee's is the fresh spring rolls and the chicken satay. I've never been so insulted by wait staff in my life! My less than 2 year old was being mildly fussy. The waitress comes over and says "when we were kids we didn't act like that". We give our kid his leap frog tablet to keep him occupied. Again, the waitress comes over and says "sorry I didn't mean to offend you earlier" My wife responds "well you did" Waitress "that's 'cuz he's spoiled with all that TV" We immediately started packing our things getting ready to leave. Waitress again comes to apologize. I explain that I've never had someone talk about my child like that. "I never said that" in response to me calling her out for saying my child is spoiled. As the check drops on the table for $39 Which she waits for us to pay before leaving. Keep in mind. This all happened in under 15 minutes of us being there. My Parking slip still had 40 minutes out of an hour when we got back to the car. In 20 minutes we spent $40 on zero food. completely insulted and Iwound up not having lunch with my wife on her only day off. I now, back at work am eating a salad from the office cafe. Enraged. Writing this review. Paying for my lunch again. My child is spoiled... go fuck yourself. UPDATE: Got a call from the manager after my experience. They apologized for a solid 2 minutes. And then boldly asked that I take this review down. Which I didn't know they knows about. In any case, I have been to many Thai joints of carrying price ranges/atmosphere and this was definitely on par with some of the best. everything my table ordered was delicious. One of the guests with me had been to Thailand on several accounts and proclaimed that the food was "on point" and I have no reason to doubt that. Price: reasonable Food quality: excellent Food quantity: very good (we left full) The staff was awesome and our waiter was very nice and helpful. Gave sound recommendations for those who had questions. Do not miss: -Sarong spring rolls : a real treat of chicken spring roll stuffing wrapped in a nest of noodles and fried. A bit of background. I have a culinary degree, and Thai food is my favorite. I also am from an area of the country where there is authentic Thai food on just about every corner. I've traveled a lot and had a lot of authentic Thai food in my life. My sister and I were excited to find a Thai restaurant in the cities. My sister and I both have stomach sensitivities and specified this to the server. We both made it clear that the food could not be spicy at all, no spice. She said that wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately both dishes were so spicy there were inedible. The curry did not taste like curry. Not at all. I've probably had curry 500 times in my life at this point. It tastes like Thai chili's. That's it. This was a duck curry, the duck was unseasoned and extremely overcooked. The rice was undercooked, still a bit crispy. But the curry was overcooked. All i could taste was spice. It was so inedible that I took it home and tried to add a can of coconut milk and curry and seasoned it myself so I could eat it. I still couldn't, the spice could not be toned down. It was that bad. I ended up giving it to a family member who also had to add more cream and lime to it to be able to eat it. And my sister had to do the same to her food. Bear in mind, this isn't one persons tastes. 4 people tried these two dishes and none of them could eat them. They were inedible. $45 for food we couldn't eat. That's extremely disappointing. I don't send food back. I have a history working in kitchens and I don't like to put this kind of pressure on the staff. I wish we would have because that was a huge waste of money for food we had to throw out. When we got up to pay we stood at the cash register for over 10 minutes waiting. Regarding Receipt 5JWD on 11/3/17: Disgusted with the customer service here. Will never return. I work at a hotel three blocks away, and before today, we used to regularly recommend Sawatdee. After today, we have instructed our front desk to remove Sawatdee from our recommendations. I had heard from clients before that Sawatdee doesn't get orders correct or that they're late, but that the food was good. My office decided to order food from here for the first time today. The online order said wait time would be 20-30 min. I walked in the door 45 min later to be told that they had received the order but hadn't started it yet. Annoying, but whatever, it happens. So then we came back thirty minutes later, shortly before our lunch break was to end. They were just putting the last item in the bag. (Note: It was only a salad, an app, and two entrees). Got back to the office. Missing one side and the salad. Called the restaurant. The host doesn't speak English and didn't seem to understand the problem even though I'd already spoken with him twice. I asked if it could be delivered because at this point, it had been almost two hours and two trips. He said I could pay to have Bite Squad deliver it. I asked to have the Papaya Salad refunded.
