Went to Scalessa's for my first time tonight. Unfortunately they do not allow guests to bring their own wine...hopefully they will soon. Bread was something else they don't serve freely either, unless you ask. So now I'm at an Italian restaurant with no wine or bread...sort of the staples of a great meal. Ordered the meatballs saw they were very popular and well known. They were good, served with ever so slightly sweetened ricotta which was nice....but ran out of bread to dip...felt bad to ask for more! although seemed to have waited a bit the small salad in the stainless metal bowl held me over. Dinner came relatively quickly after that, my wife had the gnocchi with shrimp in the blush sauce...gnocchi were good although served with way to much sauce and the shrimp had their back tails on which makes it extremely hard to eat. I had the cheese ravioli homemade (only available on the weekends) they were ok at best...ricotta filling blend and skimpy... topped with their Sunday Meat gravy...this was very good but once again no bread to sop up the leftovers.... Phone rang off the hook place was busy and seemed very disorganized. Bathroom was a disgrace no soap or paper towel to wash and dry your hands! 3 stars for friendly service! read more

Peculiar gourmet Italian restaurant nestled in a residential neighborhood. By peculiar, I mean be ready for odd things. They have no ice, so the only free beverage is lukewarm tap water; thankfully, they have a lot of bottled drinks in the fridge. Portions for the entrees are large, and everyone enjoyed their meals. The vodka sauce shrimp with ricotta gnocchi ("ricotta pillows"). Though my daughter complained that the edges were burnt, she and Andy adored her lasagna. Dena loved the Grandma's gravy (tomato sauce) something-or-other (roasted pork butt and sausage). The chicken Parm was fine, but the least interesting dish. So glad I decided to stop in here -- had the Porkette sandwich which was legitimately one of the best pork sandwiches I've ever had. It came out piping out with tons of flavorful broccoli rabe, sharp provolone cheese, and well-seasoned, tender shreds of pork all on a crusty Italian sub. Excellent food and Great service We went to Scalessa's for the first time for my boyfriend's birthday dinner, and we were not disappointed! He ordered the lasagna and I ordered the spaghetti and eggplant meatball, and we were both very happy with our meals. He cleaned his bowl. The highlight of the meal was the delicate cannoli. It was the best one I have ever had!! And my love enjoyed the butter cake. We took some home with us. Neighborhood treasure! After hearing many positive reviews we decided to visit and have dinner. It's true, the service is extremely friendly. This place...just amazing. I have been wanting to go here so bad, and I already can't wait to go back. We ordered the shrimp a la rosa with homemade gnocchi and huge shrimp, the meatball parm sub (wow, so flavorful), and my favorite the porcette (which you must get loaded). The owner and staff were so hospitable and nice, thanked us for coming and gave us a little taste of the lemon pound cake. This place is consistently excellent. The food is as good as my grandmother's and I would never compare anything to her's if it wasn't true. It is our go to restaurant for take out especially now during this stay home period. We order dinner from Scalessa's at least once a week. Five stars all around! Welcoming friendly waitresses, comfy picnic tables on a flower-lined street and probably the best Italian food I have ever had! My husband had "Grandma's Sunday Gravy" with pork butt and sweet sausage over thin spaghetti and pretty much drooled the whole time over its fabulousness. I had the Homemade Gnocchi Verdi (with fresh crabmeat--and lots of it!--and spinach and tomatoes in a light broth.) They were nice and light and delicious! Our meals were served with a perfectly dressed garden salad sprinkled with just a bit of fresh Parmesan. We enjoyed our meals so much that we ordered three more to go. I'm a transplant from Northern New Jersey, and locating decent Italian has been challenging. I like this place. Hopefully the neighborhood leaves the establishment alone. The cold sandwich is something that does not require repeating. The mission of finding a good sub, hoagie, whatever u call it - that mission is still in progress. Stopped at this little gem driving up to New York from Virginia when I googled best places to eat in Wilmington, Delaware. The food was great and really reasonably priced. We've been meaning to visit Scalessa's for an age, having heard about their legendary meatballs (and good food) - we'll, the meatballs lived up to the legend, and the delicious garlic bread ran a close second! The entrees came quick, fresh & hot; I had Grandma's Sunday Grave and Rigatoni, and my husband a chicken with red peppers & gravy dish - both were flavorful and filling, so we got the butter bread apple pie dessert to go. There's a good reason why Yelp ratings are sky high for this place. It's simply wonderful. You walk in and are immediately taken care of by the excellent and friendly wait staff. We had the Meatball appetizer. Oh my....Heaven. Could have died right after, and been happy. For entrees, we got the Chicken Parm and a Veal dish with Crab topping. Both were superb. The lamb was so tender I couldn't believe it was lamb. Both entrees were so large we took half home. Too full to try dessert - oh well. What an amazing place this is. Don't "judge the book by its cover"! I admit when I suggested we meet our dear friends here for a Christmas lunch that I thought it was a fancier restaurant. It wasn't, and it didn't matter. Everything is freshly home made and portions are huge. Quality was not sacrificed for the quantity of food served. Four cheese Gnocchi appetizer is enough to share between 4. Each entree is served with a small salad and non pasta entrees are served with a side of gnocchi. All drinks are bottled/canned from the cooler. No alcohol. Nicole (owners daughter) was wonderful. She went out of her way to wait on us; usually you place your order at the counter and then you are served. Thank you Nichole. The butter cake is not to be overlooked. Absolutely sinful and worthy every calorie. Appetizer, four entrees, four beverages, four desserts ran about $110. Wow, we hit the Italian lottery with Scalessa's. Took my son here yesterday. He got the chicken parm. Huge, perfectly pounded and crispy on top. The sauce was mildly sweet and perfectly seasoned. Some of the best either of us has tried. I had grandma's Sunday gravy. Any Italian restaurant with the word gravy in its menu is the real deal. Loaded with sausage and pork, it was amazing. The rigatoni was perfectly al Dante. The waitress was very sweet and the surrounding were very pleasant. Sinatra crooned in the background. Found Scalessa's on Yelp because it was close to the hotel we were staying at. We were here for a hockey tournament and I came with three very hungry boys. The service was awesome. We got the meatballs on recommendation from our waiter and they were all he said they'd be. You could taste how fresh and homemade they were. I felt like I was hanging out at home with my own family. We sat inside and it was clean and neat. Very old school Italian pizza feel. The boys all got Chicken Parmigiana and I ordered the chicken Marsala. All were delicious. Decided to stop in today for lunch boy was I glad I did. Got the porkette sandwich loaded and it was one of the best pork sandwiches I have ever had. The meat was flavorful but not overly seasoned, juicy and the addition of the broccoli rabe gave the sandwich a slightly healthier and fresh taste. The broccoli rabe was cooked to be soft but still retained its full flavor. The portion was very generous. The only compliant and why this isn't a 5/5 is the fact they charged 2 dollars or an 8oz bottle of soda. I think the sandwich is worth every penny but the soda was way to steep. Small menu which is great, that means they can concentrate and get it right. Can't wait come back for their home made meatballs. Update, Was contacted by Yelper Don S, whom I assumed was the owner, and was offered a refund for my soda:-) This is definitely above and beyond what I expected. I politely declined but am thoroughly impressed. If they apply the same dedication to customer satisfaction overall to their food, which based on experience so far they seem to, then what more can be said other than bravo!
