The hash was so delicious; it might be the best I've ever had. Overall, it was a great experience with attentive, helpful service in a fun and clean Irish bar. I will come back here again!

I've been coming here for 15+ years specifically for the live music. I remember when the cover was typically $10, $15, or $20. However, when we went this evening, the cover was $40 per person. For a casual night out, that felt quite steep, especially since the pricing wasn't listed on the website. I still love the atmosphere and the history here, but I wish the cover charges were more transparent online so guests could plan accordingly. Definitely a "live and learn" moment - I'll be sure to call ahead next time to check the door price!

The "Perfect" Pint is apparently a far cry from reality…read more Our server, Ruffino, seemed perfectly cordial at first, but that changed rather quickly when we discovered a 20% automatic gratuity added to our bill without any prior notice. We didn't find out about this little surprise until the check was placed on our table. Nothing like discovering an extra charge at the end of your meal that apparently everyone was supposed to know about except the customers. We went downstairs to the host stand and asked to speak with a manager. We were informed that there was no manager on duty--apparently, just a staff of bartenders. When we questioned the automatic gratuity, we were told that all orders over $100 automatically receive a 20% gratuity. There was just one small problem: we had never been informed of this policy, nor did we see it posted anywhere. We politely asked for the charge to be removed since it had not been disclosed to us. We were told there was "nothing that could be done." Naturally, we then went back to Ruffino and asked to speak with his boss. We were promptly brought the exact same person we had already spoken with downstairs--who then proceeded to tell Ruffino to remove the gratuity. So apparently, there was something that could be done. Good to know. Unfortunately, the situation then went from questionable customer service to outright disrespect. During the interaction, our experience working in the food service industry was insulted, and we were told, and I quote: "I feel bad for whatever establishment you worked for because I know it was S**T. Get the F**K out and never return." Classy. For the record, there were only four people in our party. The establishment's own gratuity guidelines state that a 20% automatic gratuity applies to parties of six or more, not four. So let's recap: * A 20% gratuity was added without being disclosed. * We were told it applied because our order exceeded $100. * We were unable to find this policy posted anywhere. * We were initially told nothing could be done about the charge. * Someone subsequently instructed Ruffino to remove it, proving that something could, in fact, be done. * And when we questioned the situation, we were insulted and told to leave and never come back. Honestly, the last part was the easiest request to accommodate. If "Perfect" is supposed to describe the customer experience here, I'd hate to see what happens at an establishment that's merely average. As for the request to "never return"--don't worry. We won't. Some establishments manage to make that decision remarkably easy for you.

Apparently this beer is not as common in New York, but there were a couple Irish pubs that still sold them on draft and luckily there was one nearby my hotel. Very cool place! It's easy to miss walking by but once inside there's a bar on the main floor, restaurants in the next floor and a rooftop bar several stories up. The rooftop bar is a huge open atmosphere and once seated you have about 40 beers on tap to select from. The staff is incredibly friendly as well and knew exactly what I was looking for. Would definitely come back to try more drinks!

I was only here because my friend had to meet up with my work colleagues so I thought I would grab a seat at the bar and enjoy a quick burger before heading out for birthday festivities. The burger and fries were good and the rooftop is nice. I have no desire to return but it's probably what they want.

My favorite was the pork chop (cognac, sweet prunes, bacon, rosemary) -- the sweet and soft texture of the prune was melted in my mouth like fat, and the pork was tender, with the rosemary also coming through. The vodka rigatoni was a skip, somewhat bland and one-note, we ended up putting some of the truffle butter and garlic aioli from the fries to make it more flavorful. This was especially in contrast with the spicy shrimp pasta which was much tastier. Also got the strawberry vacherin (strawberry ice cream, meringue, vanilla whipped cream), it was my first time having this dessert. The tartness of the strawberry was great with the fluffy meringue and the sweet ice cream. Service was extremely attentive, and the restaurant is beautifully decorated with moody lighting. Although the space was packed, it didn't feel too loud or crowded. We spent about two hours and didn't feel rushed.

Went to Scallywag's on the recommendation of a buddy of mine who said it was under new management and was a great place to watch Sunday football. I was expecting a typical dive sports bar with wings and burgers and a tv or two. Instead I found myself in a spotlessly clean, well lit pub with a terrific diverse menu, great drink specials (bottomless Mimosas and Bloody Marys with brunch and a free shot of the day any time the Jets score), and an entire wall of TVs playing every game imaginable (NFL, golf, soccer, and baseball). Ended up having my son eat with me too. He enjoyed the shepherd's pie while I opted for the buffalo chicken strip salad. Portions were ample and the quality was outstanding. Greens in my salad were fresh and crisp and the variety and quantity of vegetables in the salad was noteworthy. I'm not a huge drinker, but the selection of beers impressed me. Also, the waitress told me the bar has a back room that can be reserved for larger groups. Atmosphere was very upbeat and pleasant. Wait staff was friendly and punctual. All of the other patrons were very nice. Definitely a great place to hang out with a group of friends but also a place I'll definitely take my wife to for date night. I will be going to NYC late September and can't wait to revisit Scallywags. I've been there both day and night and found Mike and the daytime staff very friendly and very helpful on places to visit and see in NYC. Food is excellent. Also a great place to visit at night for sporting events a bit of music and food. I also found the night time staff friendly and very helpful on places to go at night in New York. 20oz pints, live music, great selection of draught beer and spirits and the night time bartender Barry was great craic and very helpful. As a Dublin bartender myself, scallywags is definitely my go to place in NYC and can't wait to revisit in September and hopefully Barry will sign his book for me! Can't believe some of the reviews here. Service, food and beer was great! Plus they have Live Muisc every night and stay open until 4am with a midnight happy hour!! I moved around this area a couple months ago and went in for a drink and have been there several times since. When you walk in the place is really clean and there is a great atmosphere. Lively music and a main bar up near the front and then a really nice layed back feel restaurant style area in the back. Best of both worlds! The drink specials are great! Always a drink for $5 and they serve probably the best Guinness I have had in New York. Seriously guys come in and try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed. read more

I was coming here for 2 years. One day, my credit card wasn't going through & I offered to pay in cash. Barry, the bartender abused me in filth & threatened me with physical violence, I would've called 911 if I weren't a regular. The bill was only 40$, which I settled in cash after a long argument & receiving racist slurs. I remained calm throughout the ordeal but his behavior was very frustrating. When I told the owner Michael (calmly), he responded 'that's my brother in law, you're messing with my family, don't come back.' I want to ask, is this how you treat loyal customers? read more

We visited Scallywag's on December 18th right before Leonard Cohen's concert at Madison Square Garden, which is just a short walk away. We were five couples and were very tight on time. We were accommodated by the Staff who were attentive and the food was excellent. During dinner the new owner, Mike, stopped by to say hello and to ask how everything was. Popped in her Friday night to meet a local friend at his suggestion and loved the setup, warm Irish pub atmosphere, and especially food. Lots of room and screens in the bar area to watch sports and a dining room in back with more screens. Decided to spend the weekend there watching football and it was great. Took a table in the bar area with some friends, and had a great time. Lot's of energy and vibe with good mix of comers and goers during the games making for good fun. My god, I couldn't believe this place. It was like a home from home. Irish pub in Manhattan. Yes there are a lot of them but how many actually have staff from Ireland. Got talking to the bartender on duty, Barry, get craic, told me a few stories, turns out he has his own book (full of stories)... great pub, great staff, good food. This bar has just been redone and is now a great local spot to hang with friends. It's now got lot's of screens for games, great music, and much better beer selection if you like real beers and not microbrews exclusively. Also, food is much better than most bars. Was in NY last week & popped into Scallywag's last Thursday to watch game 4 of the Yankees-Tigers SWEEP. Go Tigers. It was even more fun than the other times I visited. Was this some kind of historic landmark? Well, not really: turns out the original pub has its roots in Ireland, and they have locations in London and NY, the NY one having opened in 2023. As such, the interior was pretty much like any higher-end Irish pub catering to tourists: clean, roomy, and on the pricier side. We had a couple of Smithwicks and shots of Jameson. We didn't try their food, but I imagine it's fine. The exterior is really the only distinctive thing about this place, but in a town of hundreds of Irish pubs, perhaps that's enough. Then she took our food order. I had a Cheeseburger with fries and coleslaw. The food came pretty quickly and was delicious. Cheeseburger was cooked perfectly and tasty great. The fries were crispy on the outside & soft and juicy on the inside. Also, the coleslaw was really good too. I highly recommend this pub for some good food, friendly service and wonderful atmosphere.

The atmosphere is very conducive to having a great time. Needless to say, I can't opine about cocktails but the Guinness and variety of Irish whiskey was excellent. We ordered a mixed platter of fried appetizers that hit the spot. The onion rings were great. I didn't want to eat a bunch of fried food all night so I ordered a wedge salad with salmon. It was very good. The salmon was tasty and juicy. We stayed quite late and everyone had a fantastic time. I would definitely check this place out. I will be back next time I am in NYC.
