Had a poor experience where when I ordered a burger I asked that it not have cheese because I am severely allergic. When the burger came with cheese, I wasn't too annoyed because unfortunately it happens all of the time. I asked for it to be taken back and remade without cheese so that I can eat it. When the burger came back very shortly my suspicion was immediately raised. Upon close inspection, it was apparent that they scrapped the cheese off with a knife, as there was remnants all over the burger. As someone who can have a major reaction to the slightest exposure of cheese, this was disappointing. I got the crab cake benedict which was packed with crab and sitting on a super flaky biscuit. I'm not a huge biscuit person, but I might be becoming a convert because I would definitely order this again. Unfortunately my egg was undercooked, but our waitress took my plate back immediately and had a new one made. My friend got the fried chicken benedict which is a nice thin chicken cutlet so it pairs perfectly. Add some bottomless mimosa's to our meal and we left full and happy. I had it bookmarked for quite some time-more because I've heard the brunch is where it's at-but I was still excited to try something new out for dinner. We arrived around 8pm, and while nearly all of the tables on their spacious patio were filled, not a single seat inside was taken except at the bar. I definitely like how it's tucked back from where the main hustle and bustle is in Navy Yard, so it presents a quieter, more intimate atmosphere. There were still a couple of tables available outside, and, luckily, we were able to be seated at one of those. Scarlet Oak has a small craft beer selection, but seems to focus more on cocktails and wine. We decided to split a carafe of the house white, which at $20 was pretty hard to pass up. For food, we ordered the mussels and the white pizza to share. The mussels had a really nice garlic white wine sauce with red pepper flakes mixed throughout for a nice added spice. The portion was fairly large and all of the mussels (save for the one that didn't open up) tasted fresh and flavorful. My complaint here is that only two measly tiny squares of toasted bread (more burnt than not) came with this dish. We had a lot of leftover sauce, and I would have enjoyed mopping it up with the bread (as long as it was only lightly toasted as opposed to burned this time). Next time, if I retried this dish, I'd be sure to request a couple additional pieces of bread. The white pizza consisted of prosciutto, arugula, ricotta, and fresh mozzarella. The portion was 6 healthy slices, so we both were content with splitting it since we had the mussels as well. I appreciated that this pizza wasn't overwhelmed with arugula as I find many white pizzas to be. The prosciutto was plentiful and spread evenly across the pie. This pizza was just missing something though. We used the pepper grinder to help a little bit, however, red pepper flakes brought out with the pizza possibly could have remedied the lack of spice/flavor. It's not that the pizza was bad by any means, just more bland that I would have expected. Maybe even the addition of garlic would have been nice. The crust was slightly more doughy than I would have liked but it wasn't untolerable. Our service was very warm and enjoyable throughout our meal. Other things on the menu caught my eye that I would definitely return for: the short ribs, spicy Italian sausage pizza, and citrus salad sound delicious. I would also love to give Scarlet Oak an opportunity for brunch since that seems to get unanimous love across the board! 3.5 - I've been wanting to check out Scarlet Oak for almost a year now since it opened so I was excited to finally dine here with my good friend/coworker. Walking to the restaurant which is on the corner of First Street and New Jersey Ave. S.E. Capitol South, we were both amazed by how much the area around it is being built up with tons of new apartments and condos. Scarlet Oak is owned by same owners of Southern Hospitality and gets its name from D.C.'s official tree. (Yes, we have one). There's your fun fact of the day. We arrived for our 6:15 reservation right on the dot (made on OpenTable) and we were seated right away. It being a muggy, humid summer night in DC, we opted to sit inside and were given the choice between a table or booth. Booth it was - much more comfy! We'd planned our dinner date a few weeks in advance and were excited to see that Wednesday nights they offer half price wine bottles. That of course was the first priority. We perused the selection together and were stuck between two. By recommendation of our server, we chose the Benvolio Fruili Pinot Grigio. It was crisp and refreshing for the hot summer day and wasn't complex. We took our time enjoying our first glass of wine - appreciating that our server didn't rush us to order food. The menu is varied with dishes like pizza, salads, fried chicken, steak and seafood. There's a full bar, beer and of course, wine. Now, looking over the appetizers, nothing really popped out at us as worth trying so we decided to save our appetite for our entrees. In the meantime, we sipped our wine and took in the good vibes. Scarlet Oak's decor and environment is a nice balance of elegant and casual. There are number of vivid modern art paintings around the restaurant that enliven it. Eventually, we placed our entree orders - both choosing pasta dishes. For my fabulous dining partner, the Cavatelli with house-made ricotta, pancetta, asparagus, preserved lemon, basil and Pecorino. For myself, the Homemade Gnocchi (special) with cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, wild mushrooms, basil and Parmesan. When our dishes arrived, we both immediately noted the beautiful presentation. The bite of the microgreens mix my dish was topped with and the sweetness of the corn made for quite a wonderful flavor. I learned that their produce comes from a local farm and their eggs, meats and cheeses are all driven down from the Amish in Pennsylvania. And you can taste the difference. Plus, their responsible sourcing of quality ingredients doesn't mean a higher cost for the customer. While it wasn't the most adventurous of dining experience, we left with happy bellies and money still in our pockets. First and last time at this restaurant. It was, in a word, "Meh". Too bad, too. It's nice inside. We arrived for a 10:45am Father's day brunch. It all went downhill after we were seated. The server arrived 10+ minutes later asking if we knew what we wanted. Apparently we were suuposed to have checked out the menu by scanning a small QR code on the drinks menu located on the table - but no one told us about that when we were seated. Later the server takes our order and I also order a drink. The drink arrived 15 minutes later; and, no, the restaurant was not busy. The drink appears, as does the appetizer. The appetizer was OK. No one checks in to see if we like the food, or if we need anything. After we finished the appetizer, I had to flag down the server who was studiously avoiding eye contact with our table, to order another drink. The drink and the entrees appear 15+ minutes later. My wife and I ordered salads, which were OK. My daughter's pizza was inedible (seriously). We intentionally skipped dessert and asked for the check. Never again. read more

Cocktails are good, I feel like the beer menu could be better (a little boring). Been here twice for dinner and the food was decent. First time I got the salmon entree, which was done well but pretty basic (reminded me of something I frequently make at home). Admittedly I kind of wanted that. The rest of its got several small plates (curry shrimp was good, sliders were ok, fried salmon roll was ok). Last night I got the butternut squash soup and tuna tartare. Soup was kind of disappointing, tasted like a cream soup with some squash thrown in for color rather than the other way around. Bacon was a nice, and needed, touch but I feel like it's so easy to improve this. A bit more spice (perhaps curry?) and/or coconut milk instead of cream would go a long way towards making it more interesting. Tuna tartare was good, very lightly dressed and tasted fresh, which is what I wanted. My husband liked his burger and the brussel sprouts were decent. All in all, we'll probably be back as it's one of the closest restaurants to home and is good when you just want something predictable and basic. This restaurant is very close to the Navy Yard Metro making it a great place to grab a meal or drinks before a Nationals Game. We had a reservation for brunch and were surprised to find there was also children's cooking party going on at the same time. The Staff handled it like champs. They kept the kids entertained and we got our meal quickly. We live close and I was hoping this would be our new neighborhood hangout. I am not sure that this is the place we will pick. While our food was fine, it was a little expensive for what we got. If I was doing it over - I would get the French toast, which was the best thing that folks had at our table. read more

I went here for happy hour to catch up with a friend I hadn't seen in a while. The atmosphere was quite nice, with ample seating at the bar and at a community table. There were a good amount of people in the bar, but it didn't get too loud. We were seated at the community table and had a difficult time getting a servers attention, so ended up ordering drinks at the bar. The cocktails are simple and named after the liquor they are based on. I had the whiskey drink which was quite sour with a grapefruit flavor. It was okay but nothing to write home about. We ate indoors and all tables are very well socially distanced. They also wipe each table with Fabuloso after each party leaves a table. I ordered the Crabcake Benedict which was good. So ... we're in town to see our amazing nephew --- Daniel J Maldonado in Newies at the Arena Theatre. Our hotel recommended the Scarlet Oak for a quick bite. Well .... let me just say the steak was perfectly cooked and paired well with the asparagus. Though unusual in it's presentation and texture, the cheesecake was amazing. This was not a good meal. The portions were small. The food was severely under seasoned or just tasted weird in general (chicken apple sausage that has a strong taste of cinnamon). The iced coffee is basically watery coffee that's been cooled off. The eggs Benedict needed salt in a bad bad way. My sister's scrambled eggs came out as just over hard eggs (appeared the cook forgot to scramble or just half a$$ed his attempts). The Bloody Mary was so heavy on the Old Bay... And this was so over priced for the portions. The only reason it gets 2 stars is that it's one of the most convenient options for breakfast in the area, has a decent outdoor seating and for the young 20 somes the bottomless mimosas may mask the mediocre food. From the moment we walked into the Scarlet Oak and David welcomed us, to the moment we told him we wanted an outdoor table and although there were no outdoor tables clean at the time, David took the time to clean one for us, we knew this was a class act that went above and beyond! My husband's french toast were perfectly cooked. I can't even explain how good his dish was. My omelette was expertly executed which to me means not over cooked, tasty and perfectly balanced between egg and everything that went in it. The potatoes were cooked throughout and very tasty and the sausage and bacon were just right! The only reason I gave the restaurant 4 and not 5 is because the didn't have cream for the coffee, they had milk, and it's just not the same. Went for brunch on Easter Sunday and sat on the patio. It was early in the day but the patio wasn't over crowded and the staff was attentive. My daughter ordered the Nutella Crepe and I had the Scarlet Breakfast. The crepe was delicious and my daughter loved it. The chicken-apple sausage was flavorful and the bacon crispy. Next time I'll order something more adventurous for myself, but I anticipated having to share with my toddler (which I did) so I played it safe with eggs. Everyone at this establishment is nice and polite and they made me feel comfortable brining my daughter. I have since gone back for happy hour and I'm glad I did. Bartenders are fast and the patio just outside the bar is nice. FYI you cannot have your dog on the patio which we found out later, but as long as he stayed on the other side of the planters, management was fine with it. Finally had a chance to go to Scarlet Oak, and I would say the food is OK, but not as extravagant as others have made it out to be. The only food item I had that was extravagant was the crepes! The crabcake was not so great especially as close as they are to Baltimore. (Note: I am a connoisseur of crabcakes, I try them everywhere from Hawaii to Seattle to New York to Florida). *The best I have had is in middle river at a restaurant call by the docks. Back to my review... the crabcake here is very small and has lots of breading. The crab inside is pretty much non-existent, it is almost like they use a pre-made crab salad and put it into the recipe. A good crabcake is flavorful and has chunks of crab with little need for breading. If you want a crabcake similar to what you can get at Harris Teeter then get it here and pay too much. read more

I didn't realize until I got home that the restaurant added 20% gratuity already and had never mentioned that to the table. We were looking for an outdoor brunch and a girlfriend had seen Scarlet Oak's patio. We ordered a bottle of white wine for the table since it was pretty warm out and while the sauvignon blanc (i didn't take note of which one) was decent I was disappointed that it wasn't served with any type of chilling mechanism. The brunch menu had brunchy classics and I did enjoy my grilled chicken sandwich. My girlfriends also enjoyed the breakfast sandwich, benedict, and kale salad. Remembering Nationals Park as a place that doesn't have good food (which apparently it does now), we figured to eat prior to the game. We wanted a boozy brunch that wasn't hard to get a seat in, and was close by to the stadium. You don't get much better than the Scarlett Oak. Delicious food, with an unlimited mimosa option, less than ten minutes walking to the ballpark, it seemed like a slam dunk. The place itself is gorgeous, with. Beautiful ambiance and style. Got there around 11:30 and was seated right away. We had reservations but the place didn't seem overly packed like you needed one. Our server was very nice and pleasant. Ensuring to refill all our beverages regularly. Our meals were excellent. Everyone was happy with what they ordered. May I highly recommend the crab cake benedict . Overall it's a great spot for brunch. While the neighborhood isn't the most popular, if you're around here for whatever reason, especially before a Nationals game, this place makes a great option. read more

We just had our company holiday party at Scarlett Oak, it was fabulous! We had a brunch with about 35 people. They gave us a whole section to ourselves. The service was fabulous! Drinks were topped off constantly. The food was excellent. I had the huevos rancheros. The eggs were cooked well (no runny whites), flavor was good. We had family style fruit and potatoes. We got breakfast pizzas and brussel sprouts for appetizers. Food was delicious, timing for service and delivery was excellent. Portions were good and service was great! I've only been to Scarlet Oak once, and it was during a happy hour, so my review is based on that alone. That being said, I had a blast at a company HH at this venue. We went on a Thursday night, that happened to coincide with a baseball game at the stadium. The resulting atmosphere and vibe within SO was awesome. People were cheering, drinks were flowing, and the bar's location by the waterfront made for a beautiful evening. As far as the food and drinks go, SO has a lot of beers on tap and all of them are $5 during HH (except Guinness). They also have $5 glasses of wine, but i didn't taste any of those so I can't comment on them. Lastly, the bar offers a variety of different mules and I tried a couple (the Oak mule and the traditional Moscow). Both were good, but at $8 a piece, I opted for the cheap side and went back to beers afterwards. The food at SO during HH is awesome. My favorite dish of the night was easily the salmon tempura. It's basically a fried salmon sushi roll and they give you a soy sauce/wasabi mixture in a very decorative pattern on your plate to dip the sushi into. It was the best dish of the night by far. Besides the salmon, we also ate all the different types of pizza, which are only $5 for a personal sized one during HH. Other standouts included the fried cauliflower and calamari. Food, friends, fun, all a stone's throw away from Nationals park and the waterfront. What more could you want? read more

Decided to try this place out before a Nationals game on Friday. While the place was crowded outside, inside was very empty - my boyfriend and I sat at a spacious booth by the window. We ordered the Squid Ink Linguine and Burger & Fries. Both dishes were really average. The linguine had a weird, powdery flavor to the noodles - I've had squid ink pasta before and it tasted much better at other places. There was barely any seafood (or food) in the dish despite being $19. They give you several mussels, but some of the shells didn't have a mussel inside.
