During COVID this restaurant has an hour and a half time limit on patio tables. I don't think that's unreasonable, but we were reminded of that twice within five minutes of being at the table. An hour into our reservation we were given a check and asked to get up, because another reservation needed the table. We asked what happened to the time limit and the manager/waiter didn't care -- they still wanted us to get up. In addition, the food was very mediocre. The food definitely isn't poor, and some of the pastas are tasty, but not worth the money. The bright spots are the residential location, quieter neighborhood, and good happy hour specials with food. The hostess brought us to a table that was halfway cleaned so we had to wait on her to clean it. Then they put oj in your bottle of champagne without asking so it doesn't matter if you only like a splash of oj in your mimosa. The food was subpar at best. Since July I have been eating here an have spent over 600 in this place since July. Today is the last day I will ever go there and this is why. I have eaten there a dozen time after my bike ride. I always sit outside and put my bike near me out of the way in a manner where it will not fall and have never ever had an issue. Today the hostess doesn't have an issue an actually sits me like I have been seated before. Then a male comes up to me and tells me I can't have my bike where I put it (as I have done before). He tells me I can leave it on the side but it's not secured so I said why is it an issue today for which he never answered me just said I can't and walk away. He seen me walk up with my bike as he was BSing with his friend and didn't say a word he waited until I was about to sit. People have dogs at table and that's ok. We had brunch on Sunday May 1st and we had such a horrible experience. Our server didn't have much knowledge about the menu. And what was on the menu on line and what they have is completely different the need to update their menu. And when we got our food everyone's food was cold. All 7 of us were disappointed. They're only getting two stars for having the La Crema Pinot noir. There was no indication on the menu of GF options, the server was unprepared for the question, and the options were few. They do have GF pizza, but it wasn't very good. I expect this extends to the traditional pizzas as well. Neither enough cheese nor flavor. Garlic? The service was uneven and disjointed; first they had a couple of servers try to take my order and then I had a hard time trying to get another glass of wine. And I'm way past fed up with televisions barfing out sportsball in every single bar. Couldn't we just chat, or read, or enjoy our meals without the visual assault? read more

I'm hard pressed to even give them a star. What a disappointment. We tried them out for Mothers Day brunch; it was certainly not a brunch by any means. It was a breakfast menu with a handful of items. So that part isn't necessarily a problem (short of truthful advertising), but the food AND the service were awful. Food took so long, had to keep asking. Then it all came out separately. One person had finished eating before other orders even came out. And nothing was even remotely good. Waffle was straight out of a Hampton Inn waffle machine, the omelet was embarrassing and the sandwiches were blah. What a shame. It's a great area and close to Nats Park but avoid their food at all costs. Stick with drinks that they can't screw up. Or better yet, don't go there. You'll get service that is second to none, drinks made to perfection and food that will have you adding photos on Instagram for days! The staff is always very welcoming, knowledgable and always remembers returning customers--that is what sets Scarlet Oak apart. It's easy to see why the staff is so delightful. The saying goes, "even when pizza is bad, it's good". This place came close to proving that wrong. I had the spicy sausage pizza. The sausage tasted like chili. I like chili, just not on my pizza. The cheese slid completely off of every slice. Only reason i finished it was because I hadn't eaten all day and I didn't want to waste $14. My gf not so much. A friend and I decided to check out Scarlet Oak last Sunday for brunch because the weather was warming up. Its a cute atmosphere. Large bar area with TV mounted with sports on. Their menu had a lot of delicious sounding options and I wanted to try it all. We didnt do bottomless but from the looks of the mimosas they looked like they had way more Orange juice than I like in them. My friend and I ordered from off the cocktail menu and those drinks were wonderful. My friend had several Scarlet Sangrias that were tasty and I tried Rose Crush and a few Bellinis. All which were worth coming back again for. As far as food goes, I enjoyed my homes fries and breakfast sandwich. But I would like to try their omelets or waffles/pancakes next time. My friend had the spicy pork pizza and I tried some of it as well but it was a little underwhelming. Even after adding red pepper flakes and pepperoni to it. Something was missing. Its was fresh but didn't have any kick. It definitely needs better sauce or different flavored pork sausages. My friend would likely try something else the next time. Stopped by here their first Monday after their grand opening. Staff was very friendly, and the food was great. Best pizza in the neighborhood and closest to real Neapolitan. The pasta was also delicious but what really stood out was how awesome the vegetables were, specifically the peas and broccoli. For the cost I was expecting slightly bigger portions, but it won't break the bank and almost everything on the menu is great for sharing. We went here before the Michigan-Ohio State game. I was still under the effects of an excessively boozy night at Dram & Grain so I really didn't need any more alcohol. "Why are we going to Scarlet Oak when we are cheering for Michigan" I asked with little cognizance to the facts that 1) Scarlet & Oak are not Ohio State's colors and 2) Scarlet Oak is a tree. "We are stopping by here for a coffee shot" my far more sober friend offered with the suggestion "this will make you feel better." Well, I see there are a lot of reviews here talking about fancy ass vegetables (arugula, brussel sprouts... SNORE!) but there isn't nearly enough attention to the coffee shot. That shit was awesome! Granted, my friend was completely wrong as it only intensified my headache and hangover, but after I kind of got over that, I was able to appreciate that what I had drank was both tasty and boozy. I've been here for dinner, brunch, and an attempted happy hour. None of these experiences have been great. We came for dinner on a weeknight. Service was slow. The brussels sprouts were way too greasy, to the point where it gave me a stomach ache. Brunch was okay. Nothing special or unique and again, slow service. The last (and final) experience I had here was attempting to come for happy hour. It was a beautiful day and every single table outside was empty. However, we were informed we couldn't get happy hour drinks outside and they won't allow pets on the patio. This is the only place in Navy Yard my dog has been turned away outside. I understand having a policy, but the hostess was quite rude about it. We ended up going somewhere else in the neighborhood where we could sit outside and get happy hour drinks. read more

Food allergy?? Don't come here!! We made a reservation to eat here before the Nationals game. We arrived at 530 with a party of 7, 6 adults and one child. It took 20 minutes to deliver water. The restaurant sets up water glasses on the table and provides a bottle of water for you to pour yourself. 20 minutes to provide one bottle, then get our drink order. The beer and whiskey list look like someone selected random and then printed the results - they don't follow any semblance of a theme. The food: one of the members of the party has a shellfish allergy. So we asked what she can eat. The answer, off of the whole menu? One or two of the pastas. Not even the pizza was safe, apparently. And who wants a heavy cream based pasta when it's 90+ degrees out. The rest of our party got our food, which was marginal at best. And even better, the restaurant wouldn't split the bill up, and added a tip- more than likely because they knew we were upset. 5 adults ate dinner and one small child, and apparently that is a "large party". Before Scarlet Oak arrived we found ourselves peering hungrily into the windows of the then empty space, daydreaming about what could possibly go there, and never daring to hope that it would be a place as freaking AWESOME as Scarlet Oak. But it ended up being so. I've always wanted a perfect little bar/restaurant near my home to pop into for a drink and a nom, and Scarlet Oak filled that bill x9000. The food is ridiculously good (praise that chef and give him a raaaaaise) and I'm aiming to try near errything on the menu at least once. But I have favorites: Try the crispy kalettes from the nibbles menu. You will order one plate, devour, then promptly order another. Trust me. All of the tiny tibbles are good, but those are my fave. Their steak? Peeerfection. Brunch? Oh god don't get me started. The drinks are superb. All of them. Made with deft hands and a spectacular balance of flavors. But the best part of Scarlet Oak is the people. The owner is a super nice guy who we've chatted with out and about, but really, the servers and the bartenders, they MAKE it. From attentively refilling our bottomless mimosas at brunch (that were mostly prosecco, TBH), bringing GIANT PLATTERS of bacon when we ordered a side, to refilling coffee and water so oft that I kinda forgot that I'd finished mine and left the place WIRED. I think my favorite was the Pappy Van Winkle day, though. So we found out that they had Pappy Van Winkle (Because they Instagrammed it like the brilliant humans they are) and of COURSE we wandered in and ordered a glass each, specifically because PAPPY. The bartender knew what was up with our bourbon-loving selves and grinned as he gave us a little bit extra to each glass. He did the same with the second and third glasses. It was pricey because it was Pappy, but the folks at Scarlet Oak made it worth every single penny. That bartender made us feel so at home. Go to Scarlet Oak. Stay a bit. Munch some crispy kale. Went for brunch because that seemed to be what everyone was recommending. The inside space is nice, especially considering that the outside looks like a generic office building. The bar area to the left is first come first serve while the sit down area is reservations only. The service was friendly and fast but the food was very disappointing. I got crabcake Benedict, which comes with a side of potatoes. There were a few cold bites in the Benedict, not sure if the crabcake didn't get heated all the way through or what. I would have rather just made this at home. My husband got chicken and waffles. He'll basically eat anything and he could not get through the chicken. Even those frozen Tysons breaded chicken patties at the grocery store are more tender than this slab of rubber chicken. The waffle was okay... it was like one of those waffles you can make at a hotel continental breakfast situation. We did mention the terrible chicken to the server because he asked how we liked our food and we barely touched the chicken. He was very appreciative of our feedback and gave us a discount, which really wasn't necessary but a nice gesture still. The burrata and tomato small plate was my favorite yet the easiest plate to prepare. The spicy sausage pizza is solid - the sauce is thin and flavorful and the sausage was nuanced and packed some nice heat - but overall a tad bland. The porter on tap paired very well with the pizza. I liked the sauce on the pappardelle but would not order the dish again. The rhubarb cobbler needed a higher crust and ice cream proportion to counteract the strong tangy flavors of the rhubarb. They had forgotten our beers (among other things) and generally took a really long time in-between every interaction. I can overlook these omissions chalking it up to growing pains of a hot new restaurant in the SE on a busy night. The service was actually quite personable and authentic which was its saving grace. The biggest down fall of this place was the seating against the wall in the bar area. We were there at the tail end of a happy hour and it was loud. What made it ten times worse is that the tables had less than a foot between you and the table next to them. I could not talk to the person I was sitting with because I couldn't hear her over the tables on both sides of us. Several times the tables would stop their conversations and look at us because they thought we were talking to them and vice versa. It was super awkward. Those tables are too close for comfort and one should be removed to give us a little reprieve from our dining neighbors. Great new restaurant, but too much $$ for awkward seating and decent eats. I live nearby so I really wanted to like this place. But the best I can manage to say is that there's nothing wrong with it. It suffers from being blah middle of the road instead of cheap and surprisingly good or expensive and totally worth it, and for me that's a huge minus. We split the Calamari which was delicious, although the portion size isn't meant to be split among 5 people. This was probably the worst meal I have ever had. We had a Gilt city deal which makes me want to stay away from those too if it leads to places like this. We got two small plates; wings - too spicy served with watered down blue cheese to dip, and fish tacos that didn't taste like anything more than plain fish in a tortilla. Entrees where a balms not seasoned steak with greasy potato and veggies, the worst watery pasta bolognese with no taste. As a resident of that apartment building I've been here twice now- once at a sneak preview for residents and once for actual dinner. The staff all seem pretty nice and competent, the decor is cool (love that big canvas on the wall), and the food is great too. Especially the pappardelle (with peas, so tasty! Who would've thought!), the meatballs, and bruschetta! I like the happy hour prices ($4 drafts and house wines if I remember correctly) and the bar area has been packed since it opened. They have a couple tvs and a long communal table. The only issue is that the communal table is super close to the bar, so there's not much standing room. Overall, Scarlet Oak is a solid alternative to Justin's and a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I can see myself here a lot! read more

Service: I made reservations and we were sat at the bar because the tables weren't moving as fast as they had anticipated. I don't particularly care, but my fellow diners did. Wow. This hurts to write. We've only had dinner here three or four times, but last night is why we won't be back for awhile. And perhaps our naivete at coming to a watering hole on St Patrick's Day in a part of town sorely lacking in dining and nightlife options contributed to how things went. We arrived and were seated in what seemed to be the bar area. We noticed that there were very few waitstaff and none we recognized. (One of the reasons we enjoy coming here is how great all of our servers have been on previous visits.). The communal table in the bar was fully occupied and grew louder as it got later. The ubiquitous basketball game was on the big screen, contributing to the noise level. It's a BAR. I get it. Our server came over with menus, brought water, told us Happy Hour was going on all night.That sounded promising. She came back to take our order but when one of us asked to make a substitution we were told "Chef doesn't like to make substitutions...and that if he did, there would probably be an upcharge". UH, HELLO?! I'M THE CUSTOMER HERE. I realize that DC holds 'foodie status" now and Capitol Hill is no different....but this is the Navy Yard in Southeast. She never even asked whether it could be done or not. Honestly, we only wanted to swap the sides from one dish to another. In the end, the diner selected something else (salmon over risotto) so as not to delay the meal. In hindsight, that would not have mattered because it took forever (an hour i think?) to get our food. The same was true for those around us. Our server never came over to give us an update. She barely came by the table. She was in the weeds. For the amount of people in the restaurant, more staff were clearly needed. "HH all night" sounds great until you realize it'll take 45 minutes to get your drink refilled. So, food finally shows up - one diner ordered a salad, a calamari appetizer and a pizza. The salad and appetizer were brought together. The person running the food explained that he accidentally handed my friend's pizza to someone else, and said the replacement would be out shortly. The calamari was overly breaded and looked horribly overcooked, as in, why would you bother bringing it to the table? I realize it's March Madness and the bar was full of food-ordering, high tippers but would it have killed someone to comp a $5 glass of wine to the person whose ordered you screwed up? Insult to injury: way too much oil with the risotto under the salmon. We had to drain the excess onto a bread plate...twice. The pasta I ordered, while generally fine, was accompanied by three meager slices of bread (or maybe they were crackers??), haphazardly drizzled with grocery store EVOO. Afterthought? Our server brought the dessert menu, unprovoked. We said no and asked for the check. She proceeded to clear, clean and set the table next to us. 15-20 minutes goes by. Did I mention it was loud? We asked again - it was obvious she had not heard us the first time...and perhaps she was frazzled. We were very disappointed in tonight's staffing issues at Scarlet Oak. We like the food and the staff, usually. I'd also like to think that Capitol Hill restaurants haven't gotten so big for their britches that they won't consider substitutions. That may have been the server's assumption but people in the service industry, in my experience, usually try to work with the patron, not against. Was she intimidated to ask? Or did she not want to be bothered? Who knows. The sides that came with 2 of the three meals ordered could've had more attention paid to them before leaving the kitchen...in my humble opinion. We had reservations for 11:30 thinking we'd have more than enough time to eat and drink our money's worth of bottomless mimosas. I wish I took a picture because the place we were sitting was most definitely a fire hazard. they put a table in front of the booth that was meant for a waiting area. It was right next to the outside patio door and it was just not where I wanted to be seated. The ambiance was nice but I didn't get to experience it. - we didn't have menus once we sat. The hostess was like oops how could I have forgot but then again it only took a second to get them since our table was nearly 2 feet away from her stand. - it states that the bottomless mimosas are $15 online menu yet on their menu it's $16. Only a dollar but still the principle. - it took about an hour to get an appetizer (strawberry crepe) - it took over an hour to get our food. The kitchen was very backed up but we weren't notified about this. Overall the food is really good. I had the chicken and waffles and the chicken was so delicious and juicy but just the right amount of fried. Strawberry crepe was very good too. The overall dining experience was ehh, service was not the best. I don't blame my server, she seemed very flustered and it's the kitchens fault but notifying us that the food is taking longer than usual puts me at ease and not stress about making the game in time. We had dinner at Scarlet Oak last night and and the food left us feeling 'meh'. Here's the good - decor was nice and fancier than expected but the crowd was casual so the restaurant didn't feel stuffy. The meatballs were good and even had a little kick of heat to them. The staff was all friendly. Beer and wine lists were pretty good and I especially love the local Black Ox Porter being on tap. The tomatoes in the bruschetta were nice and fresh but the flavor was only so so...more garlic please! The pizzas on neighboring tables looked could and worth a try. Now the bad - I had been to Southern Hospitality before and enjoyed the fried chicken, telling my husband how happy I was that Scarlet Oak would offer this. The stories posted about this 'new sister restaurant' implied this dish would be the same. Sadly it's not. We got two small pieces of crispy but bland, bone-in dark meat chicken placed on top of collard greens placed on top of soupy and bland Mac n cheese. Because the Mac n cheese was so soupy, my plate became a soggy mess including the crispy chicken. The collards were the only good thing on the dish. I would not recommend this dish and my husband's first experience was not the love affair I had with it after my first experience at Southern Hospitality. Kudos to the restaurant for having kids cups but they come at adult prices. $3 and we didn't even get a refill. Ouch! It was opening night so I didn't expect service to be great. It wasn't but I'll take the friendly staff. There a definitely kinks that can and will improve. I did, however, expect a tried and true recipe to be better than it was. I'm not sure how the manager chose which tables to stop and chat with but I wish he'd had stopped at ours. I'm sure we will try it again, someday, and hope that things improve. Waffles were fantastic but the quality of chicken left much to be desired, they are switching to white meat chicken breast for the fried chicken, maybe that would help but I was not impressed from what I got. A group of us went to Scarlet Oak for brunch after the Cherry Blossom 10-miler the other week. The food was ok but we were very disappointed with the service. My husband and I arrived about 20min ahead of the group because it was cold. We sat down and expected the waiter to come by in a few minutes and ask if there was anything they could get us while we waited. However, we waited for 15min before they even came and it took another 5min to get coffee. I was really shocked at how long it took to get two cups of coffee. Once our group arrived the service was better, however, they did forget one of our entrees and we had to ask them for it. We tried a number of food items on the menu, including the french toast and the crabcake benedict, the former was good but the crabcake benedict was smallish and only so-so. We'll look for another brunch place in Navy Yard. read more

I live across the street and was ecstatic when Scarlet Oak finally opened. I would describe it as one step above a classic neighborhood restaurant, i.e., it's a destination eatery in its own right independent of the baseball stadium. I was surprised by the quality of the food the first week, so much so that I went 3 times in the first 3 days it was open. The rockfish is pan seared with a nice crust. The short rib is melt in your mouth tender. The burger is a satisfying go to. And I dream of the pappardelle with pork ragu. The hush puppies were solid, as are the kale croquettes, and burrata. Now what they don't tell you is a lot of the stuff is housemade, like the pasta. The cocktails were well executed and reasonably priced. From what I hear, brunch and lunch are on their way, as is outdoor patio seating. Overall, I would say Chef Leo Garcia and the management team have done an above and beyond job on the rollout of this restaurant. I expect as word gets out and as the 6 or so new residential buildings come up, it will get tougher to find a seat. I even hesitate to write this review so I can keep it to myself! read more

I will start by saying that others in our group seemed to like their food. my wife and I both got pizzas and both of us were very disappointed. I got a "margharita" which is pretty simple: fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, and some sauce. What I got was the most pathetic excuse for a margharita pizza I have ever had. there is hardly any cheese, and the "basil" is something with only a mild basil flavor, and there is hardly any of it on the pizza. it doesn't look like normal basil and definitely doesn't have any of the flavor of normal basil. also, the sauce is way too salty/acidic. Of course, that could be a side effect of simply not having enough cheese to balance it out. I don't think my pizza was merely a mistake because my wife got a similar pizza and hers had a similar composition. Perhaps the guy doing the pizza today is new or something or maybe they just make nasty pizzas. Again, not saying the rest of their menu is necessarily bad, but these pizzas were our only direct experiences. Others in our group did seem to like their food. But, i would definitely avoid the pizza until they get their game together, get some real fresh basil, and "splurge" on a reasonable amount of cheese on each slice. read more

Carlos is cool but the food is not good and the drinks are expensive and the service is bad. I still go here every week tho for some reason.
