Schilo's is one of those places you go to because you either have fond childhood memories of eating here or you are a visitor to the area and thought you would check it out. The business is always busy so expect to wait - put your name on the list as soon as you get there. I also recommend taking a menu outside to wait so you are ready to order once you are seated. BEWARE: the menu posted outside on the windows lists prices that are cheaper than the menu that is handed to you once you are seated. The menu is mostly German based food; however, that is a stretch of the mind. It has definitely been "Americanized". This visit I sat by myself at the corner of the bar and I ordered the pork schnitzel, with fries, and green beans. It took about 40 minutes for the food to show up and when it did it was the smallest piece of pork ever. In fact ,it was so small a few minutes later the chef brought me another piece saying "he was ashamed they had him give someone such a small portion". The food was nothing special. The pork lacked flavor and required me to generously add salt and pepper while the fries seemed old. The green beans however were fairly impressive and I wished I had ordered more. From my corner of the bar seat, I could see into the kitchen fairly well and must say it seemed like a disorganized mess with the cooks, servers, and bus boys constantly running into each other. While I was in the restaurant there were two accidents causing dropped plates/cups. Additionally, if a view of the kitchen/back of the house is available to the public I highly recommend some deep (and continued) cleaning. read more

This is the real thing!!!!! I was born and raised in a small town in northern Germany and I can't even count how many times I have tried "German" food in America and been disappointed because it wasn't authentic. Food at Schilo's tasted like home. Mustard may not be what people rave about online, but the homemade mustard gave me visions of my mother's kitchen. I couldn't quit eating it. The pretzel was large and fresh, Schnitzel was good and the pea soup simply outstanding, so thick and rich in flavor, just like my family used to make. Even my husband, usually not a fan of German stews commented how delicious it was. Our waiter was really friendly and engaging, the customers at the next table liked him so much, they took pictures with him. Schilo's was one of the places that was most talked about when I asked around for breakfast recommendations. It was nestled right in the middle of downtown so it was easy to walk to from most of the hotels. The inside is reflective of its Eastern European origins. It wasn't modernized and felt like a locally owned store. It was a seat yourself place and we grabbed a booth. The booth was a huge wooden one that basically hid anyone sitting inside but despite that someone came to get our orders right away. I loved our waitress; she was helpful and patient as we asked her about the food on the menu. We ended up getting - the Reuben sandwich, the Schilo sampler, and the famous House root beer. I HIGHLY recommend getting the Reuben! Everything about it was delicious and the thousand island dressing she gave us complimented it well. I will say that the sauerkraut inside the sandwich wasn't as tart as some other places that I've had it - though this is not a complaint. The Schilo Sampler is a good option if you don't know which sausage fits your taste. You get to choose three from their large menu and two cheeses. We got the cheddarwurst, bratwurst, and the polish sausage, I personally loved the cheddarwurst and the polish sausage. I could have gone without the bratwurst because to me it was very bland. The texture didn't sit right with me either. Lastly, the Schilo root beer! I really like that the drink was served with a frosted glass. I guess it speaks to the effort they put in enhancing their root beer. I will say it was the creamiest and delicious I've had. I'm glad it came with a refill because I definitely would've had to ask for another one *cue Thor gif* Overall, Schilo's is worth the trip! Not sure why i have never been here. We pass by it all the time and finally got to go. We went on labor day after staying down town. Both of us were looking for breakfast. The place smells amazing walking up to and inside. We were both excited to try our meals. She got an omelette and i got the Papa Fritz plate. Both were very good. My first meal in San Antonio couldn't have been better. We got here on a Tuesday afternoon and only maybe about half the place was filled. We sat ourselves down and the waitress took our order. We had seen other people raving about their root beer so we definitely had to get that. It costs $2.50 and you also get a free refill. And it was amazing! It was creamy and super sweet. It was already so creamy so I can't imagine how it would taste as an ice cream float (but most likely still tastes amazing). We also got the Reuben sandwich and the Schilo's Sampler, which lets you choose three meats and two cheeses. We didn't really know what to order so we asked the waitress what she recommended and liked. We got the Cheddarwurst, Bratwurst, and Polish meats with pepper jack and provolone cheeses. I think my order of favorites would be the cheddarwurst, polish, and then bratwurst. The cheddarwurst had small bits of cheese coming out which I really enjoyed. The pepper jack had a little kick to it which added another flavor of the dog. The Reuben sandwich was super delicious! The bottom piece of bread was a little soggy but that's fine. The waitress asked if we wanted thousand island dressing with our sandwich and we said yes and it made the sandwich taste even better! The items we got were the perfect amount for the two of us. Stopped by to take out a couple of breakfast tacos so can't say a lot about the place. Tables were spread out well so it wasn't cramped. Maybe seating for about 40-50 plus a bit more at the bar. While we were standing waiting for our breakfast, every employee (4 or 5) who passed by asked us if we were being taken care of. I think that speaks volumes to how service oriented they are. The place is located in the heart of San Antonio. It was recommended by one of the locals after our visit to The Alamo. The place had a western saloon style and decor which added to that Texas flair. My family is here in San Antonio on vacation from California. We wanted to enjoy the River Walk, Alamo, and many other amazing activities and sights available in San Antonio without having to worry about all the mask mandates in place in California. My sister has an obstructed airway and cannot wear a mask. She is also a physician of 30 years. We decided to have breakfast at Schilo's, hearing it was the oldest restaurant in town. When we got to the door the hostess was there insistent that we had to have mass to walk to the table, but we told him about my sisters medical condition and asked if they knew what medical discrimination was, and while the hostess was very understanding she said that the owner was unbudging on the policy. After a little more discussion they said they were willing to have us walk in with a mask down under our noses and we reluctantly agreed. When will the people demand something different? When will we start following these silly guidelines that have absolutely no meaning? Does anybody really believe that a paper mask is protecting someone in their journey from the door to the table? We must stop believing absurdities in order to stop committing atrocities. Period. This is not a law or even a common sense rule. I hope the owner of Schilos will wise up. It was more Tex/ManThe waiter brought the drinks and forgot one. It never arrived. Prep and cook time were excessive and pretty disappointing. That does explain the long wait to get in. I am addicted to German food. I dream about German food. Schilo's is the oldest restaurant in San Antonio. I expected greatness. We got there at 7:10 and they close at 7:30. Only 2 or 3 tables taken. Hmmm. By 7:30 the place was packed. Glad we beat the crowd. Glenda really liked her German meatballs and mashed potatoes. My Jager Schnitzel was ok but not as good as I was expecting. The red cabbage and German potato salad I did not care for. I've had much better. They are known to have a great Rueben so that's a must try next time. And if your looking for a beer, this is the place. Schilo's is at street level rather than on the Riverwalk, and easy to find. Give them a try. read more

As long as I've been visiting SA, I never had a chance to go to Schilo's until now. It's been in SA for over 100 years and they are still cranking out that wicked deli goodness. I had to try their German Deviled Eggs as well as a schnitzel. Eggs were phenomenal. Not sure what made them "German" but they tasted really good with a nice kick to its yolk blend. I had the pork schnitzel. A thin slice of pork battered and fried golden brown with a great snappy crisp brought together with some homemade brown gravy. I did not know German-Texan fare was a thing until I came to Shilo's, which is probably the only place in the world where you can get sausage platter and tacos. I came specifically for the home made rootbeer (which was bomb) but was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. The split pea soup was SO GOOD. It was a cold and rainy day and this creamy soup really hit the spot. The reuben sandwich did not disappoint and was stacked with layers of corned beef and saurkraut. The corned beef had excellent flavor and texture without being too fatty. The rye bread was freshly baked and tender with good body. I substituted german potato salad for the chips and it was an excellent choice. There was a short wait on a Sunday afternoon but people go in and out quickly and service is very fast and efficient. read more

On my second trip to San Antonio I wanna eat at Casa Rio, however it was closed, so we found this place. When we arrive and see the menu we encouraged to enter. It was a pleasant taste experience, I had never tried German food before, however the waiter service was terrible, he had no patience to take the order and I had to ask him to bring me the cutlery and napkins because he did not give them to me. One of the oldest delis in San Antonio, it's a decent spot to eat. Prices are under $10 and the food is made to order. Sometimes there is a short wait but it moves quickly. The meatloaf was absolutely delicious, the patty melt was good, and the Reuben was just OK. No french fries here they serve these round potato crisps that aren't very crispy but they are good. I like the atmosphere and the service was excellent. Old-school styling and eclectic decor. Am I in San Antonio anymore? German food is a difficult find in San Antonio. However, there's a reason why Schilo's Delicatessen is the oldest operating restaurant in the city. Reigning in at about a 100 years, this restaurant holds a lot of history in addition to delicious food. Schilo's Delicatessen was a great spontaneous visit after indulging in the Coffee & Cordials festival with some friends. One thing that caught my eye immediately was the adorable decoration inside the restaurant along with the warm welcome that we received. My friends and I ordered an abundance of food which included: the reuben sandwich, hanchenschnitzel sandwich, potato soup, tomato soup, pretzels, and their root beer. Needless to say, there wasn't a single item that we ordered that we regretted. The highlight meal item for me that night had to be their baked pretzel. Sorry Auntie Anne, but you really can't beat Schilo's recipe. Hot, fluffy, salty and with the addition of their hot mustard, it's a match made in heaven! Well it's a Deli type of place but not much German Deli. Ushingers wursts from WI, and Boarshead stuff. A bit of a disappointment. But after all it's a TX place. We came in for breakfast. I had potato pancakes.. meh. They were ok but really tasted like grated cooked potatoes fried. Hardly any seasoning or no onion it them like they should be. The homemade applesauce they serve was tasty but very sweet. I did order a fruit cup and that was good. Bf had the 3 wurst sampler, cheddar, brat & knackwurst. Two cheese choice was Munster which was fabulous and prepped jack. I think that was a better choice than I had. Guess I was spoiled eating my German moms potato pancakes. We ate lunch here on 6/27 in San Antonio, TX. They were able to accommodate our family group of 12 at 3 separate tables, due to the lunch hour crowd. We had great food, several got the German sampler platter, which they said was delicious. Someone had recommended this restaurant to us for their famous root beer. It was delicious and well worth the trip. They had a photographer come around and take photos of each table, with which they gave us a small free copy and then had other copies of the photos for sale. We chose to just get the free copies. I tried their homemade root beer. It came in a frosted glass and was less carbonated than usual. It was also less sweet than the conventional ones as I was able to down a second refill. I opted for the pork schnitzel with a side of German potato salad. The schnitzel was wonderfully breaded and the potato salad was unique. This place is supposedly the oldest restaurant in San Antonio. We've heard a lot of great things about this restaurant (mostly from food bloggers on YouTube) before trying it out, and the food definitely delivered. Street parking is near impossible so we parked at the mall and walked over to the restaurant. (It's a scenic walk anyway since the river's right there.) When we got there, it was packed but was seated fairly fast. We ordered homemade root beer (super worth it and you get 1 free refill). It was more flavor and less carbonated than an A&W root beer. We also shared a large split pea soup to start with. I usually don't like split pea soup, but this one was good (even my 1-year old liked it), kinda tasted like daal soup if you've had that. I ordered the roast beef with gravy with green beans and mashed potatoes and WOW the roast beef was so tender and the gravy was so savory I LOVED IT.
