He said there was a place in Alameda that he saw on Diners, drive-ins and dives that has a burger with bleu cheese and blueberry... Tell me how to get there and it's on! Totally small place, like enough space for four people to sit. You walk up to the counter, order what you want and they give you the option to go to the Lucky 13 next door which also seems like a really cool bar with LOTS of seating, big windows (got to watch a hailstorm while chomping down on my burger) and an awesome selection of craft beer on draft. We both ordered the Blueberry Bacon Blue Cheese Au Poivre: peppercorn crusted Burger, blue cheese, blueberry sauce, thick-cut peppercorn bacon, arugula, red onion and basil aioli. I have been here twice when flying in or out of Oakland airport. It's about 10 minutes away and the perfect snack to have before or after a flight. They have some items that stay on the menu and daily specials that are always worth checking out. Last time I had the wasabi deviled eggs and they were the best I had ever had. We were meeting up with friends for lunch and the Alameda resident in our group gave us three options and we quickly chose this one. Then she texted that morning, saying that we would meet at the bar next door. Sounds good to me! We grabbed spots at Lucky 13* and then split up to order drinks (at the bar) and food from this spot. Glancing at their menu, I immediately appreciated their focus. A few snacks (perfect for sharing!) a few burgers (including the impossible (vegan) burger), fried chicken (in or out of bread), sides, and a few salads. We all opted for the fried chicken sandwich. The sandwich was SO good. Perfectly cooked chicken with the perfect proportion of mayo, pickles, pickled jalapeños, and lettuce on a perfectly toasted bun. I enjoyed every bite. The sandwich seemed a bit pricy at $12.50 with no sides, although it is large enough to share (if you are into that sort of thing). Our group also shared two orders of their fried pickles which are yum. Their partnership with Lucky 13 is also a great one. I went here about a year ago and I still haven't forgotten about the treatment I've had with this place. My boyfriend and I ordered burgers from this place which were absolutely delicious. The cashier told us that we could either eat outside or inside the bar. We chose the bar since it was cold outside. When our food was done, we brought our food to the bar to eat and I noticed that when we entered the bartender looked at us with disgust. He came out of his area just to ask us for our ID's; however, he didn't ask others who just entered the bar for their ID's. Why only us? Sometimes when We need a break from it all and we feel so spoiled to not cook just pick up the phone and place an order ahead! Disappointed in the customer service today. My family has had good experiences in the past with this restaurant and their food truck-- great/accurate orders, and friendly staff. But today was a let down. When we were ready to place our order a regular came in and the cashier took his order before ours. Then the cashier was stocking shelves and left the restaurant entirely while we were waiting. They finally got our order and took quite a bit of time preparing it which I interpreted as fresh foods being cooked well. It wasn't busy. Turns out the burger I ordered wasn't medium, it was practically mooing. This is how you give people food poisoning. I had to put it in my air fryer at home to cook it to medium. Additionally, they forgot part of our order and when we called to inquire about it, the cashier accused us of lying. We didn't check our order before departing with our baby because it was a cold day, but we should have, apparently. Amazing! Simply stated. We rediscovered our food love at Scolari's today after a long break since our last visit. We always craved their eclectic blend of flavors used in good ol' American comfort classics of burgers, sandwiches and fries, but had turned away when they removed their few handful of indoor seating and needed to resort to sitting out street side (or the next door bar that was not ideal for a family with small children). Our most recent visit was met with endless pleasant surprises from their added seating to their expanded menu and their new selection of locally crafted Alameda Point soda pop. Faced with too many tempting choices that we knew we couldn't go wrong with any, we decided on their Cha Siu Chicken Sandwich served with a sesame seeded Asian slaw, their to-die-for cheeseburger, and their Scampi fries drizzled in lemon garlic olive oil and served with a side of creamy lime cilantro sauce. YUM was met with every bite from beginning to end. It's difficult to describe how the many fresh and uniquely paired ingredients can turn a well known classic to gourmet. I admit I went here because I say the place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. E-40 was even on the episode saying how he lived this place. I had been wanting to try a Nashville Hot Sando and went here based on the show. First, it is a dive. Small little walk in that seats 3 or 4 people inside. The vibe is cool. The staff was nice. They have the process down given how busy this place was the day I came. The sando was mediocre. It looks fantastic (see my photo) and it is was freshly made, but it had very little heat. It essentially tasted like an everyday fried chicken sando and I expected a lot more for $13. I added a soda and my bill was almost $18 with no sides. At least is was locally made soda and was really good. In the end, the place might just be a victim of its hype and inflated prices. For $18 I expect a legit lunch. That's not what I got. I don't think I would return. If I did, I think I'd have to channel my inner E-40 and ask them to sprinkle my chicken with some more hot sauce. read more

I love the fact that everyone knows I'm really into food because they'll recommend new places for me to review. Too bad they won't pay me for my efforts though :( Most recently, I had a college friend who told me to try Scolari's in Alameda. He knew I'd just recently moved to this beautiful island and wanted to expose me to the "great" food scene. Enter Scolari's, a popular American eatery that opened in 2010. The really cool thing about Scolari's was that there were two convenient spots you could go to on the island - each on opposite sides. I went with my girlfriend to the Park Street location, which was kinda dicy with the parking situation but we eventually found a spot nearby in a crowded lot (like $1.5/hour). Walking into this Scolari's for the first time, I initially thought this place looked like a legit "hole-in-the-wall." For example, the setting was VERY small with only minimal counter seating on the inside and two tables outside. The menu was also tiny as well, with only around 3 types of burgers, several sides, fried chicken, and a few sandwiches. They did serve the Impossible Burger though, which was pretty cool. In terms of cost, it wasn't really "hole-in-the-wall" like as almost everything including snacks were around $10+. My girlfriend and I dropped about $40 and got their Classic Burger (with lettuce wrap), a Chicken Parm Sandwich, and a side of their Buffalo Fries. Here's what we thought of the experience: -- GOOD BUT HELLA PRICEY -- BOOYAH! Overall, really great stuff with fresh ingredients. However, a few nitpicky things were lacking which I thought couldn't be justified by the cost. 1. Classic Burger (7/10): Let me start with the great. The beef patty was SUPER JUICY, I loved how crisp the lettuce and onions were, and their house sauce (which was pretty much Thousand Island) made everything go together. On the other hand though, the ratio of ingredients was WAY OFF. Too much lettuce, barely any meat, and my burger was virtually swimming in sauce. So close, but still far off from ideal... 2. Chicken Parm (8/10): Chicken Parm was a little better in my girlfriend's opinion - particularly because the crispy chicken patty was HUGE! The marinara purée sauce worked really well, the arugula was fresh, and their crunchy bread was mm mm good! Only critique from my girl was that the chicken could've been crispier. 3. Buffalo Fries (6/10): In a nutshell, the fries could've been a meal on its own. For $10, we got a gigantic plate of fries soaked in tangy buffalo sauce and surrounded by crunchy celery, julienned carrots, and blue cheese. Couldn't have cared less for the salty cheese, and the fries were a bit soft, but overall not a bad order ... if you want to overeat. Too much overload for me! -- NOT NEARLY HOLE-IN-WALL ATMOSPHERE -- Scolari's wasn't nearly as much of a "hole-in-the-wall" as I had thought. And that's only because customers could actually bring their food to Lucky 13, the dive bar next door (if 21+)! That's what we did, and we were able to sit at the quiet and shaded patio outside. With peace and quiet, as well as a place to order drinks, this was perfect for a warm day! -- GRADE A SERVICE -- Probably my favorite part about Scolari's was the service. The gentleman who brought our food was VERY courteous. He was the one who showed us to the outdoor space. All in all, Scolari's is quite a nice place to stop by in Alameda if you want some junk food. I'd come back again just for the heartwarming service. But if you're worried about breaking the bank, I'd think twice about coming here. Came here for dinner while in the area and by all intents and purposes it is a dive with a great menu. Awesome! They are equipped with tables outside for outdoor dining but you have to bus your own table. Not sure how sanitary that is during Covid, especially without sanitizing between guests sharing the tables. We asked which of their three types of fries we should order so we could split one with our meal and the garlic scampi fries was the suggestion. They were delicious! Loaded with garlic and red pepper flakes and served with an aioli on the side. When I asked for ranch I was told they had none because the owner hated it so much he didn't carry any at the restaurant even for customers. The two sandwiches we ordered were the best sellers on the menu. We asked for the sandwiches to be halved but were given a plastic knife so we could do it ourselves. The Good Ol Boy fried chicken sandwich ( ordered hot) and the Blueberry Blue Cheese Burger. The chicken sandwich was fried perfectly and had great heat and flavor. The bits of pickles and pickled carrots made a great compliment. But, hands down the best thing I ate here was the blueberry burger! This burger hit every note of flavor and was dream worthy! Sweet, savory, grilled to perfection, with bacon and arugula to cut through all the salty and sweet. It was absolutely perfect! I would come back just for this burger!! The local sodas were a miss for me. I prefer traditional Coke or Pepsi products but they had local sodas on tap. All in all, the place has great food and we'd revisit for that reason. The buffalo blue cheese fries were not good, they were soggy from the buffalo sauce. $33 before tip The bar was busy with food patrons from next door including a guy's softball team. This site is basically a tiny outpost w/about 4 maybe 6 seats including the 2 tables out front. If there's no open seating or you simply need more space, you can order and dine-in at the bar next-door. Depending on the time of day, this can be a good or a bad idea, lol, totally up to you. Scolaris has two locations, but this one is the smaller location next door to Lucky 13 on the corner of Park & Encinal in Alameda. If you are in Lucky 13 they will deliver your food to you. The featured items are burgers, ($9.00), and house cut twiced fried french fries ($5.00). They also offer strombolis, hot dogs, sandwiches and pizzas by the slice. On this drunken adventure, I had the bacon cheeseburger ($2.00 extra for bacon), and fries. The burger was cooked medium as requested, was good sized and had great flavor. However, the bun was not the best I have had: 4 Stars. I forgot to take a pic of the fries (prolly cos I was too $hitfaced, and I wolfed them down too quickly, or a combo of the two - LOL!!!). But the fries are excellent here. They come out hot, crispy and nicely seasoned. They come w/ aioli sauce and ketchup for dipping: 5 Stars. The ambiance is really nothing. Scolari's is a neat, little find right on Park near Encinal in Alameda. I'm rarely in these parts, but for some reason, Jamie W. had a hankering to cross the bay and explore a town he hasn't explored before. We landed in Alameda because I think Park Street is among the most pedestrian-friendly streets in the East Bay. I was planning to steer him to Ole's Waffle Shop, but the line was so long on a Saturday morning, we passed. Scrambling to find a highly rated eatery in the area, we ended up at Scolari's, an intriguingly Italianate deli with barely any seating in its compact space. Good thing it was a sunny day since we were able to eat al fresco. What drew my eye quickly to this place was the stromboli, a calzone-type concoction that's really hard to find even at old-school pizzerias. Maybe because it's not authentically Italian. Somebody in Philly actually invented it after World War II, so it's a Yankee-paisan creation like the Primanti Bros. Sandwich, the one where they put fries and cole slaw in the sandwich. But stromboli, when done badly, can be as stale as a Hot Pocket you forgot to nuke. Scolari's does it right with the $11 Classic Stromboli, which is a steaming hot strudel filled with pepperoni, ham, salami, and gooey mozzarella. Sliced into finger portions and served with a tomato sauce, it was really tasty and enough for two...seriously (see photo). Jamie went for the hefty $9 Falafel Burger, which came with kalamata olives, hummus and tahini sauce along with lettuce, tomato and red onion ( see photo). Hearty and flavorful but a distant second to the stromboli in hindsight. The $3 House-Cut Fries were probably overkill since we had no idea what the portions would be like (see photo). We washed it down with bottles of "Guilt Free" Lucky Club Cola (see photo), which still tasted East Coast-syrupy compared to a Diet Coke. I can always seem to find jewels in Alameda, and Scolari's is one of them. That was a burp-worthy, belt-loosening lunch well worth repeating you should pardon the expression. Listen. Would I say Scolari's is the best burger in the Bay? No. Would I dare say they have damn good burgers in general? You bet. Would I dare to say it is sort of stupid expensive but also kind of worth it? Absolutely. That doesn't stop us from going here every now and again. They make a solid burger, no doubt about it. Their fries are pretty good most days. Their sauces are bomb. Pickles are bomb. Buns are bomb. I love them but it's just a bit out of my budget sometimes at nearly $50 for 2 burgers and fries- but it's so good that the splurge is worth it when you're craving their meaty goodness. Cool little restaurant, and Alameda a great refuge from the summer heat. Park street is like a step back in time with a cool bay breeze. Even if this wasn't such a great restaurant the location of it alone would make this a desirable destination. I come in and am greeted and given friendly help in choosing something. I need help because there are lots of good options. I go for the burger they are known for - blu cheese, blueberry sauce, black pepper crusted beef burger. I am told that I can sit outside or at bar (Lucky 13) next door. I choose outdoor seating as its a nice day and I know there is no way I can sit in a bar and not have one or two beeeers. Alameda cops are one of my worst fears (consider stopping for both yellow and deep green lights and have one beer and wait 4 hours). Be on the safe side. Police here are bored because they have little to do. 7pm and shady outdoor seating although empty on my way in fills up quickly. As I wait seated near the corner of park and Encineal I watch some foot traffic. I hear a hipster on a bike stop at the intersection with his squeeky brakes. No coke or Pepsi here. Qwerky Alameda Point craft soda served. Lemon lime soda a distinct flavor a bit different in a good way. I sip my drink... and then comes my beautiful burger. Im greeted by name and its dropped off. It was a show stopper. People on the street point and talk about it and it attracted at least one patron to wander in. As I eat I feel like a little piggy. Not just because its getting all over the place but because its so good. Unexpectedly good. Incredible flavor from the generously pepper crusted beef, sweetness from just the right amount of blueberry sauce, the blue cheese.. . and a bit of bitterness from the greens, nope not ice burg. Bacon sticking out in every direction. I finish, my plate is quickly cleared and am offered a refill. Excellent service. Perfectly prepared. Great value. I will be back. I think you should go too. Live life on the edge.... go crazy... order a burger with blueberries and live a little. I bet you'll like it. Tips: *If you come from far away come here on the first friday of the month for the Oakland art walk downtown. I enjoyed it after on 6/3/16 and its just a short trip away. *For dessert you can't go wrong with Tuckers ice cream or Crispian Bakery nearby. Tuckers cool atmosphere and good hours. Crispian Bakery - home to the best almond croissant I've ever had. Check hours though. Properly wait out that one beer at either location. *Scolaries at the Point might also interest you. Slightly smaller menu - no blueberry burger - but awesome skyline view of San Francisco and can be enjoyed with wine from the winery next door. read more

Stopped here for lunch before heading to the beach. We ordered... (1) Good Old Boy (2) BAT (Bacon, Arugula, Tomato) (3) Kid's Grilled Cheese (4) House Cut Fries (5) Buffalo Fries (half order) Overall, I wouldn't go back again because it just wasn't very tasty & for a $50 lunch before tip, I totally expected far better. Hubby's (1) had bland chicken; I tasted it too & concurred. The (2) I had was okay, I mean how can bacon ever taste bad?! But it was nothing special & pretty small, mostly bread; nice if you're a bread-lover. Kiddo's (3) was horrible! I tasted it for temperatures before giving it to the little one... it was literally tasteless & made worse by the hard bread!! Like, so hard that it scraped the roof of my mouth :( I gave our 4 year old teeny tiny bites to avoid it scraping his mouth. Even he barely finished half of it. We tossed the other half. Both orders of fries were good. Service was very friendly & helpful while ordering, and since seating was SOOO limited (like a tiny bar inside & 3 outdoor bistro tables), they happily switched our order from "for here" to "to-go" with no problem, no fuss, no muss, no attitude. It helps that Scolari is also the last name of a friend of mine that I adore and admire. I am by no means a burger gal, but for that reason alone, I had been wanting to try Scolari's for a very long time. Like I said, I'm not into burgers, but Scolari's makes a damn fine burger. The meat is tender, pink, delicious, the thousand island ranch dressing couples well with the fresh lettuce and beef patty, and the bread (dare I say artisan?) is always beautifully toasted. What I love most is that my burger is never soggy by the time I'm finished, with each bite as good as the last. My other favorite thing to get here is the Silician-style pizza, which is a pillowy yet toasty square of cheesy deliciousness. I've tried both the meat and veggie versions and still can't decide which one is my favorite. This is supposedly an East Coast thang but I've only had it at Scolari's so I can't comment on the "authenticity" of this pizza...all I can say is that it is amazing. Scolari's is tiny, boasting only a few bar stools. I find the lack of atmosphere charming because it fits the whole, well, hole-in-the-wall diner feel that Scolari's is. The staff is 200% great and it's always a treat to come here. The only downsides are that it's cash only and that Alameda is starting to become less of a hidden gem and more of a Bay Area foodie's destination place. As a result, Scolari's can get realllllly crowded - but the wait is worth it! read more

Winston Churchill once said "great things are simple". I found this to be true in the case of Scolari's. Sometimes I go out to a fancy burger restaurant and there are about 20 different burgers to choose from. There's the monster burger, guacamole burger, five alarm burger, etc, etc. Can I just get a cheese burger please??? Here at Scolari's its refreshing to see the simple menu. I can choose from a handful of items.. Cheeseburger or Fried Hot Dog? Wings? Along with a few other snack items and of course french fries. I'm just here for lunch, no need to make things complicated. I'm not making any important decisions like picking a name for my future child.. I also noticed they are open till 2:30am on the weekends, so for those a little tipsy, theres no need to confuse them anymore then they already are. Btw, food is excellent. It is nice, inexpensive meal that will satisfy your salty, fatty, crispy fried desires to perfection. Scolari's has the right idea. Simple is Best. read more
