We brought our Genuine Stella scooter in for a major repair and tune up. We had some issues after about a week of having it back. We brought it back to the shop and the service manager and the general manager, Ken, really went above and beyond to make us feel we were taking care of by doing a full check again with a fine toothed comb. Ken really knows his stuff in regards to the Stella, which is rare to find. We really appreciate this amazing customer service and would not hesitate to recommend this place to other scooter enthusiasts. read more

Sometimes I dream of moving to Los Angeles. I mean, I figure I can probably become best friends with Ryan Gosling, meet/date Jennifer Lawrence after bumping into her at the grocery store, and most importantly, ride my new scooter year-round without having to wear 12 layers of clothing. Of course, this dream is flawed - Gosling is probably too cool for me, and while I'm not a complete schlub, J-Law can probably find someone with better skin and less of a gut. The worst part, however, would be leaving Scooterworks behind. My pre-midlife crisis lead me to purchasing a Buddy 170i back in August (it probably helps explain the desire to move west, too), and Scooterworks was an absolute dream to work with. I came in probably five or six times before making the purchase, and Ryan and his staff were great every single time. No pressure, no nonsense, no BS - just helpful recommendations and suggestions to help a scooter newbie figure out what made the most sense. At 500 miles, I took my scooter in for the usual check up and discovered that a pothole jumped up and bent one of my wheels. A total drag, especially financially. However, Ryan and I worked out a deal to help make the repair less of a burden. I'm shocked by some of the negative reviews here, especially the ones aimed at the service department. Brandon, Fred, and Ray have always been extremely helpful and patient with me. I've been a bit of a hypochondriac with my scooter ("Hey, that noise wasn't there last week - SOMETHING IS OBVIOUSLY BROKEN."), but the service crew has investigated every "issue" without giving me a hard time for not being a scooter expert. Look - you can pretty much ignore the poor ratings. Scooterworks has treated me, a complete newcomer to the wonderful world of scooters, like complete gold. Don't know why I haven't written a review about this place until I came to write a nasty one about a car dealer. Scooterworks is great. I have been doing business with them for years. Since about '01 when I used them for mail order while in Boston. Everyone who works there is really nice, Dean the service manager is great. They really know what they are doing and don't screw you over at all. My Vespa has never run so well since I have had it. It is quite old too. I gave Scooterworks only three stars mainly because their performance is so inconsistent. Some days customers can walk in and be greeted and have all their questions answers by friendly and knowledgeable staff, and other days--not so much. If you're there on a bright, sunny, Saturday morning during the summer, you may have to step up and demand some help, because the place can be pretty busy sometimes and you'll get ignored. I think the service department may be a little disorganized too and I get the feeling they get bored doing oil changes and the other daily scut work that make up the bulk of stuff that comes through the door. They are friendly and chatty and all that, but does the work get done the way it is supposed to be? I don't feel too confident. I bought my Kymco People S from them a couple of years ago and I love it! I've got about 1200 miles on it and have had it in for two oil changes, both of which were done without drama. There are several good scooter shops in Chicago now, so you can really shop around. If you're shopping for a scooter, one word of caution: don't buy one of those mainland Chinese uber-cheap things. They are poorly made and getting new parts for them will be tough in the years to come. Stick with Taiwanese or Italian brands, or Scooterwork's Buddys. You'll pay either a LOT more (for Vespas) or a bit more (for Kymco or Buddy), but you won't regret it. Do your research before you buy!!! read more

I bought my vintage 1969 Vespa scooter there in December. I had been considering the purchase for some time - decades really - and decided to take the plunge. They have a annaul sale in December and I got my restored scooter at a fair price. I constantly live with "buyer's remorse" with most purchases over $50 but it always fades with time. I love my scooter, even though I don't ride it that much. I'm still learning how to ride it, in fact, but I'm committed. The folks at Scooterworks were awfully nice and completely professional. The rumor is that there is a terrible backlog on work done there and, consequently, the price for repairs is at a premium. But, as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for". What a great experience, from the moment I picked up the phone and talked to David and he gave me a quick pre-estimate of what my Honda scooter would cost to get the brakes fixed too when I pulled up and Josh confirmed the estimate and Had me in and out the door quickly. He said it could take up to a week to get it fixed, two days later I had a call saying I was all set to go. We purchased our first scooter this week at Scooterworks Chicago and LOVE IT! The team at Scooterworks are bar none the most educated, kind and caring team we have met in our scooter search. Jay and Meridee took the time to listen to our needs and uses for a scooter, told us the highs and lows of each 50CC make and model, answered questions, and let us marinate on the info without any pressure. We went to visit two other distributers and came back less than 2hrs later to buy our Tangerine Buddy 50CC! Meridee took me into the alley behind the store to practice and get a feel for the scooter before I took it home, making sure I was comfortable and answered any remaining questions. I have been coming to Scooter Works since 2003. I have yet to be disappointed. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Rob, the Service Manager is very knowledgeable, easy going, friendly and reliable. Fred is the same way. I especially love the monthly movies they started doing. It is such a cool space that I stop by every now and then even if I don't need any service or anything. I wish they have a coffee or lounge area so scooterists like me have a place and hang and talk scooter talk with similar people. Great selection on helmets and other accessories. Scooterworks, what is your deal? I have a Buddy Blackjack and love it. Its a great product, but because of you I like it less! Every time that I have been to the shop or called for questions, I have felt not only (1) stupid but (b) like I received less help than if I would have searched a scooter forum. 2 recent examples of my frustration: (1) I wanted to purchase a new seat- replace the 'rally' seat that came standard on the blackjack for a standard/ low profile one. I called to order the seat, the guy took my name and number and said he would call "next Tuesday" when the shipment came in. I waited 3 Tuesday, called back and they had never heard of it. I ordered again, and a new front fender. 2 weeks went by, no response. Finally, I stopped in the shop and watched someone physically write my info- still nothing. Finally, I purchased both items from a 'competitor' shop for less and got them in no time. (2) 182 for a freaking oil change and tune up? Is the oil use laced with gold and service men retired IndyCar race crew? You guys do a great job getting the scoot in FAST, but even $54 for the oil change is a bit much. SW gets 3 stars because they carry a large variety of scooters and products. But ever ounce of me would give them .5 stars if it wasnt for the cool Genuine product that they peddle (for a price). read more

DEAR GOD WILL THE NIGHTMARE OF SCOOTERWORKS NEVER END??? Well, I've given them 4 days to respond to 2 e-mails I sent regarding a bill I received from the IRS and have heard nothing, so on to Yelp it goes. Scooterworks blatantly lied to me when they sold my lemon of a scooter on consignment 18 months ago, telling me the W9 they had me fill out was a mistake and I would not be responsible for any taxes on the sale. (Yeah, I told them I would take it home and sell it myself if having them do it meant the IRS would be involved.) I have the e-mail exchange with their former manager where he says not once, but twice that I am not responsible for any taxes. Allow me to share: "She (Meridee) did make one mistake and she may have given you some misinformation, not intentionally but because this just isn't a normal process for us anymore. We DO NOT need you to sign the W9 in a consignment situation, that is something we do now with the way we handle buying used scooters. A consignment is like a regular person to person sale and the purchaser would pay taxes, not you." "We usually take 20% but agreed for you that we would take only $10%. With that in mind and the fact that you don't have to pay taxes, if we sold your scooter for $2800 you would take home $2520. You can ask any amount you want but if you overprice it it will take much longer to sell." Guess who got a bill for $657 from the IRS over the weekend? That's right, Scooterworks 1099ed me to the IRS and now I am being billed for income tax on the sale, which was already a $1300 loss for me. How this place is still in business blows my mind. They just don't seem to give a single f*ck about anything but themselves. See you in small claims court, Scooterworks! (Sits back and waits for the standard non-apologetic "2 sides to every story" Yelp response from manager...) UPDATE: I filed an appeal with the IRS and gave them copies of the e-mail thread. Not a good experience. I bought a 'restored' 1966 Vespa from them - and believed their story that it was restored in the US (with a crate LML engine). I had issues with it almost immediately and was promised they would be rectified - but they never were. The more I look at the 'resto' - the more I think the work was probably done in Vietnam not in the US - the paint job is terrible - including painting the inside of the gas cap - which is now peeling and dropping into the tank. Don't know what they are like if you buy a new LML Stella, but don't believe their vintage restoration stories. I should have shopped around longer and paid more for a real Vespa. read more

I bought a used Buddy 170i last summer and the folks at Scooterworks have been nothing but welcoming and helpful to me. We got off to a bit of a cool start so to speak - my Buddy was not starting in anything less than 45 degrees and I had it towed in twice but that's not their fault. I had some miscommunication with the service desk but know what? I'm not sure who's fault that was and anyway that was last year. They have been super reasonable with service and winterization and friendly too. Brandon has done things for me that he didn't have to and I really appreciate that. Look, I've read the other reviews and you have to remember that people are not perfect and they aren't robots. OK...I've read all the trashing and superlatives... Yes, there is a slight problem with their customer service. They are BEYOND busy, the market is off the charts, and they're sorta clueless but let's face it....it's a scooter shop. Ever been in a f'ing BIKE shop? Regardless, their scooter selection is w/o peer, they have a nice, serene location, and the office is air-conditioned. Ultimately, with gas nearing $5, they could treat customers like pond scum and they'd still be raking it in. Fortunately, they do not. Kevin in sales is awesome. He compared and contrasted several different scooters for me after I told him I wanted a small, lightweight bike. I never felt pushed to buy nor neglected, like how another unnamed business treated me. I returned knowing what I wanted, and that was more than just a bike. I wanted my ongoing sales and service relationship with Scooterworks because of Kevin and the other friendly, informed guys that greeted and gave me quick responses to all my inquiries. i heart scooterworks. I went up to scooterworks with my eye a Genuine Stella and a few days later road away on one. Larry was everything you want in a dealer, he didn't sugarcoat anything, told me exactly what i was in for. The good. The bad. & The awesome. FIghting my typical "i want it now!" purchasing technique... i was going to be a good consumer and do all my research, Larry totally helped with this and did not take advantage of my less-than steller willpower. as soon as i said yes to the bike they had it, run through and ready for the road. anyway, it was a great experience. i've gone up there several times since the purchase and they've always been lovely and helpful. i now have a scooter i love (Stella G. Scout), with a roadside plan and a service department should i need it. PLUS: i got "caught enjoying my scooter" the other day. A guy from scooterworks (riding a scooter) pulled up next to me and handed me a card for discount on my next visit to their store. LOVED IT. made my day. ...i'll be see those guys soon. if i had any complaint it would be store hours.... i work long hours in the west loop and it's not so easy getting up there before closing time. read more

Scooterworks is my local shop. Josh and Meridee are awesome. They started selling full size 400cc motorcycles in 2018. Over the last 3 years, they took good care of me with a tire repair and buying and ordering parts from their warehouse. Lightning fast turnarounds, parts were ready for pickup the next day. They are a Genuine and Benelli dealer with sales, parts and service other brands. They have also had some parts for GY6s and mainstream asian brands. Check their website. Lastly, I've participated on Scooterworks dealer rides. Get on their email list for a fun ride with other scooterists. 1.5 stars I stopped in again yesterday. Vintage bikes can be part hungry, meaning they take some up-keep. So I dont know how they are with the newer buddys and kymcos. For what ever reason, they no longer stock parts in their store. Hasn't any one posted a response to this? I will go in and need something and they don't have it. And I have to get use to this? seriously? Well, I have gotten use to it. I have been ordering everything to rebuild this bike my self from other sources. Until recently. Yesterday when I stopped in I wanted to order spares of my body parts. My cowls and fender, but they did not have them in stock... (which I kind of expected) But, its a vintage bike, so I need to make sure they fit right before I paint them. I was hoping they would let me go to the warehouse to fit these parts, thats not to much to ask for is it? But, they did give me some free tail lights since my running light isn't working at night. I just hope they get it together soon, so I can walk in somewhere and get my parts that day. read more

I need to say, that while I did not get my scooter here, I have relied heavily on these guys for parts and advice. They have relatively well priced parts and I received really solid advice every time I was able to get through to someone in the shop. I think that their hotline is deliberately difficult to get through on because of people like me! I had a ton of questions about my '79 vessie and their phone number was usually not very helpful. In terms of stock, during the springtime this place has all the Vespas a hipster would ever need. My only warning would be that if you want to send you scoot into the shop, best be willing to part with it for a month or more, as they are generally overbooked in the spring and summer. read more

I went in for a container of 2-stroke motor oil, which I had a hard time finding elsewhere, and walked out with oh so much more. The cool helmet, scooter cover and sunglasses were too hard to pass up. Even though I ride a moped, not a scooter. (I wasn't at all put off my the anti-moped stickers I spied. I like that people take pride in their particular mode of transport.) I visited them just after they opened on a rainy Saturday morning and couldn't have found the staff more helpful. When I went to their old location years back, the place was packed with vintage Vespas. These days, their selection was pretty slim. Demand is, of course, way up with today's gas prices. Nifty, unique business. Wish Chicago had more spots like this. They seem to know their stuff and run a nice, clean shop. read more

Terrible experience with this company. I purchased their in-house brand Prima rims and they didn't fit. The quality was poor, certainly made in China, though they claim they manufacture them themselves. Total lie. I sent the 5 rims back and they refused to return my money for 3 of them because I had tires mounted on them, and then dismounted. My credit card investigated the situation and found them to be 100% at fault. I got my money back. I would never do business with these people again. read more

I have had to bring my scooter back several times to fix both electric and kick start er issues. They are not to good about answering the phone promptly, or returning calls, but ultimately they took good care of me. I spoke with Ryan Reynolds, the manager, and he arranged to have my scooter picked up for free when the kick starter broke a second time. He fixed the kick starter for free, replaced the transmission cover at cost. I supplied the new electric starter, and they replaced it as well. I ended up as a very satisfied customer, although I really had to follow up and stay on top of the progress. Ryan made the difference. My husband I brought our scooter here on a Thursday for a tune up. While dropping if off, my husband specified that we'd probably need a new battery and new brake as they current ones were grinding every time he stopped. The man behind the desk barely let us finish our questions and informed us shortly that if it were just the battery and tune- up, the scooter could be ready as early as the next day. We called the next day and left a message....never heard back. Same on Saturday (the store was closed Sunday and Monday). On Tuesday, my husband finally got through. The service desk explained that the bike had been ready since Saturday with its new battery. My husband asked about the brake pads and received an answer of , "Oh, I see here that we did order some break pads for your make and model. These must be for you, but I'll double check and get back to you right away". *Two days later*, after hearing nothing, my husband called and was told the bike was ready (again). After the ride home, my husband angrily informed me that the brakes were exactly the same and that they were never fixed! After reviewing the receipt we thankfully noted that we were not charged for them but also noted that we will NOT be taking the scooter here to get them done. read more

I love scooterworks. They are all very knowledgeable and helpful. There was no pushy sales stuff just insightful information. I got a buddy kick and couldn't be happier. Unfortunately, it came new with a bad fuel injector which caused the engine to race and the mileage to be terrible. I took it in to have it checked out and Nathan who oversees service handled the issue perfectly. I got the scooter back and it rides flawlessly. Genuine scooters are tops in quality (every machine can have an issue) and are so incredibly fun and smooth. I couldn't be happier. read more

Customer service at the repairs department is lost. I had a great experience buying a hooligan from Alex at the sales side. But at the same time brought in my wife's scooter to be fixed and paid top dollar, after being scolded by Micheal the desk about storage fees, Which I have other friends experience the same issue, I finally paid for repairs only and left. Leaving a bad taste in my buying experience. Then, less than 75 days later my wife's scooter is back to doing the same thing I originally brought it in for. Called ahead to talk to the mechanic to find out what repairs where made the first time and Michael wouldn't let me talk to him, kept accusing me of not maintaining my scooter and in highly condescending tone, insisted I was lying about the manner in which I keep my scooter. Why? All I wanted to find out was the history of repairs instead, I was placed on hold 3 times while Micheal assisted other customers, total of 30 minutes waiting. Point is I'm going to iheart scooters and will not recommend this location again! read more

Overall I am very happy with this place. They carry great product and the sales team is terrific. Over the years I've purchased two scooters from here, and have had three different scoots serviced by their service department. I will comment that the labor cost in the service department is a bit high. But being the only Genuine shop, I guess it's warranted? I stopped getting general services done here years ago and have limited it to the occasional tune-up. I also don't like dealing with anyone else but Fred, but I haven't seen him behind the counter in awhile. The other service guys recommend parts and service that you really don't need and treat you like you have no idea what you're talking about. I would highly recommend that you do your research before talking to their service department or they'll try and sell you on things that you don't need for another season or two. read more

Buyer beware here... I bought my scooter (Kymco People 50 2S) here... was somewhat disappointed in the experience but did it anyway due to the lack of alternatives that take credit card (i couldn't wait until payday!). I went in knowing pretty much exactly what I wanted, but just out of curiosity asked them to compare a few different models. His sales pitch (the owner) was pretty much "pick a color and we'll go from there" ... Then he said he preferred the Buddy over Kymco, but couldn't give a single reason why. (perhaps he makes more money on those? no competition on the Buddy service/maintenance? who knows)... Uhh, sure. I temporarily played the role of being a Lincoln Park Trixie and went along, knowing the guy was kind of scummy for it. I asked a few questions which were answered but I would've liked to hear more about the scooters without having to ask everything... I took my scooter to Motoworks / Mr Moto (the other place in town that sells Kymcos) and they were a bit surprised to see Scooter Works sold me the scooter without derestricting it... Also my friend who bought one at Mr Moto got a free Buddy Seat... (In general I was much, much happier working with Mr Moto than Scooter Works) ... I couldn't even convince Scooterworks to throw in a free cheap Chinese helmet (and ended up buying one anyway, could've gotten the same one online for $30 less) let alone get any sort of discount off of MSRP (and this was in '07, before the OMG-gas-is-$4-i-need-a-scooter-now craze). Also, the fees on top of MSRP for paperwork were a bit on the steep side, I think I paid a few hundred $ just in paperwork.... JUNK fees if you ask me. paperwork that i was later told by someone else i could've done and submitted myself (i wasn't given the option, and it wasn't even presented like it was optional). also, on the paperwork they spelled my name wrong, so my title has my name spelled wrong. and they also submitted the wrong VIN to my registration... one screwup after another from this guy! (and i'm pretty certain the guy who did it was the owner Phil). Their helmet/accessory selection sucks, the choice in helmets was pretty much one to pick from. Other scooter places have a MUCH more extensive selection, and less markup. Too bad I didn't know this ahead of time. He made a lousy sales person, filled out my paperwork wrong, charged me an exorbitant amount to do so, and was REALLY, REALLY SLOW. He tried to fix his lame-ass HP LaserJet 4 Plus printer for at least 15 minutes. Total waste of time. Dude, it's a printer that most people stopped using 10 years ago, maybe you should go spend $120 on a new HP laser printer that's twice as fast with that junk fee you charged me. read more
