Came in for the first time today and it looks a pretty good pets supply store. Not a lot of selection but what they do have is pretty great. While I was not offered any help until the end of my shopping the lady was very nice and very helpful.. i also found out they make birthday cakes I will be coming back next month for my pups birthday! I also found this brand of dog toys that is actually very durable for my terrier mix, he goes through toys like CRAZY. Let me start off by saying, I went in this store not expecting the outcome that I had. I went in there because my dog is losing weight and I can't understand why. I asked if they sold high calorie paste for adult dogs. The lady (I'm so sorry, I didn't get her name) showed me where they sold it. She inquired further as to what was going on. I told her all of the issues that my dog has and what I'm doing to care for him now. She asked me if I had heard about the Honest Kitchen dog food. I scoffed and told her I can't feed my dog regular dog food because he gets so sick. She told me to follow her and I did. She showed me this brand and explained what is what and how it compared to what I was already doing. I bought a small box to try and so far, my dog loves it. He licked his bowl for 9 minutes (I counted) after he already finished the food. The fact of the matter is, she took the time to listen to what I was saying and offered an alternative that was cheaper, time saving and convenient. She didn't just sell me what I asked for and went back to her day. I'm so in love with the way I was treated, the way they ACTUALLY care about pets and the helpfulness of my situation. Once again, I got to shout it from the roof tops to support the independent dealers! This store is wonderful. They are very serious about their pet supplies. They have forgone the mega store mass-market approach, and stayed with the boutique business model. They know their stuff too. The place is jamb packed with all sorts of goodies, and the owner's knowledge is the real kind, not just regurgitated pamphlet speak. I like to feed my mutt premium dog food, and I've never given it a second thought as to whether or not I should give her the best care I can afford. This store has a variety of choices in the premium lines, so if your feeding a dog, a frog or a bird, give these guys a shot. I have a soft spot in my heart for the independents out there. I know how convenient it is to stay with the big names, but it's the independent business owners who need our support when we can. read more

This place is great. The staff are so friendly and helpful. I went in on two different days last week and there were different people working both days and each day I was there I was greeted immediately and asked if I needed any help. They are the only place that I could find a poop bag holder. I looked everywhere and they had them. I am not talking about the dispensers, I am talking about the clip that goes on the leash that holds the poop-filled bag once full. Yes...I am high-maintenance like that. I needed to buy some dog toys to bribe my way into the good graces of a friend's new rescue dogs and my first thought was a big box pet store. Then I got into the whole Occupy spirit and I checked Yelp for a a good local pet store and that's how I ended up at Discount Pet Food & Supplies. It's a good store. The staff was friendly and made recommendations for durable toys the dogs would actually play with. I bought a toy called a Pickle Pocket - a plastic, pickle-shaped toy which has three grooves into which you hide treats for the dog to dig out - and thick rope with knots. It's been a decade since I needed to go to a pet store, so I don't have a lot to compare Discount Pet Food & Supplies against other stores, but the staff was helpful and the selection and prices were good. I'll go back there next time I need to go to a pet store. The Pickle Pocket seemed an especially fun toy. My friend had a Catahoula named Pepper who didn't like me. Pepper had some issues with other people, but major issues with me. Pepper always wanted to herd me. I'd walk to the bathroom and if I wasn't paying Pepper enough mind she'd nip my ankles. Pepper died this year and my friend got two more rescue dogs: Another Catahoula named Buddy and an unknown breed named Angel. Buddy, it turns out, was caged for much of his life and is developmentally retarded. When it comes to understanding how to play with toys or tug on ropes, Buddy rides the short bus. He has no idea how to do it. He's a big, lumbering friendly dog who needs to be repeatedly told to get down as he tries to lick you. So both toys ended up being for Angel. She was suspicious of me at first, growling and barking. I loaded up the Pickle Pocket with a few treats and handed it to her. She held it in her mouth and oddly enough still kept giving me growls and barks. What really broke the ice was when I was the one to whom she could bring the Pickle Pocket for it to be tossed so she could chase it. We became best buds then. Angel has scary fast reaction time. I would toss the pickle, it would bounce and fly off quickly at an odd angle but she still grabbed it in flight before it slowed down. After a while I loaded the Pickle Pocket up with more bison-flavored treats and gave it back to Angel so she could try to dig the treats out of the crevices. I don't speak canine, but I think her reaction went something like this: "Uh, yeah. Let me just bite this here, and then I'll put my tongue and. . . Nope. I'll just slide it, tip my head like this, bite it and then, uh, no. Well, let me push my nose down on it from the top, like this, yeah, and then I'll run my tongue along there, and the treat will. . . Nope. Well, let it take it in the back of my mouth and bite hard and. . . DAMN IT! YOU AND YOUR OPPOSABLE THUMB LETS YOU STICK IT ALL THE WAY IN THERE! Okay, maybe if I tip it like this, then bite it in the middle. . . " Angel got frustrated at times, but it seemed to be a fun frustration. read more

I shopped here specifically for birthday cupcakes for my dogs. I called ahead to make sure they had some in stock. The clerk who answered the phone was very pleasant and helpful. She was just so when I arrived to pick out some treats for my pups. The cupcakes were frozen which I wasn't expecting so I was glad I came the day before I needed them. She gave me good advice on which flavor to choose as my dogs loved the cupcakes. While that may seem like an obvious duh statement to most. Uh yeah dogs love treats?! Oh no, I have the pickiest dogs ever. They turn their nose up at most of the treats I buy for them. I was very impressed with how much they liked them and will definitely be back for more for my other dogs birthday. My only complaint was the packaging. The cupcake was wrapped in a small cellophane plastic bag which was cut frozen but I thawed it in the bag. Well that made it super messy trying to get it out and it wasn't nearly as cute. Most dog bakeries and pet food stores that sell cakes and cupcakes sell them in a box for this reason. I hope they consider changing the to go packaging in the future. read more

Wow! Wow! Wow! I wish I lived in Reno so that I could go to this store regularly. My kitty only gets the best when it comes to food and I visited this store as they are one of the few that sells it. (Acana) Unfortunately they were out of it, but the nicest guy gave me some other options of food to try and even gave me samples so that I could try it. He was very knowledgable about it and we chatted for awhile about our four legged kids. I also picked up some toys (of course) and some other supplies. They had 2 kitties for adoption that day and I wish I could have taken them home. What sweethearts they are. We also had questions about a friends dog and he recommended we come back in a few minutes as the dog expert was on her way. She was incredibly helpful as well and gave us some good advice to pass along. Overall it was the best experience I have ever had at a pet store. Don't hesitate for a second to visit. read more

Staff is amazing, always helpful, knowledgeable and fun. After 4 years of shopping here, they are always the first stop for pet needs. If you have a pet with special dietary needs, they will go the distance to find foods for your furry. They also are the only place I can find big cow feet and partial legs for my big 'cow foot and leg' loving Rottweiler (R.I.P) and our new German Shepherd mix puppy, and are cheaper than the websites of the sellers of such (disgusting) treats! We recommend them to every one looking for good quality pet foods, not corn based artificially colored by-product filled garbage. My pets all love their Natural Balance and SoJo's foods! Also, check out OptaGest enzyme powder. My cats won't eat until they get their sprinkle of it and their Grizzly Salmon Oil to start their morning meal off right. The dogs love it too. My 20yr old cat has fur that is amazingly soft and shiny. Our newest cat, rescued from NHS only took about a month before he too got his super sleek and amazingly soft fur. Oh, and hairballs? Not any more! My thanks to the staff for helping with my pets various skin and digestive issues as all are happy and healthy! Also, a great place to get your pets their shots for cheap as well as benefit a great local rescue, Palomino Valley Pet Rescue. I have never been to this store, but I just called to find dog diapers for dams in heat, which they did have. I have an English Mastiff, which requires XXL diapers, and the largest they carry is medium. Shouldn't a pet supply store carry more than just average? The clerk was very nice and apologetic, and even said they could order them, but it would take at least 4 days to get them in. I feel bad giving stars for the store when I have only had one interaction with them, but they didn't have what I needed and it would take too long to order. Gave 3 stars instead of 1 or 2 because of the positive attitude of the clerk. read more

I've checked everywhere from reno to sparks to find "taste of the wilds - bison" for my four precious babies. This is the only brand that my kids take really well. We've tried Natural Balance and it seems like their food is not consistent where my kids will get diarrahea. So I called around to see which stores have this brand and get some price checks. Discount Pet Food & Supplies have it and they're the cheapest. I love going there because the staff there are very helpful and sweet. They bring homemade cookies and offers to customers where I think it's personal. read more

I was completely happy with this store for almost a year, until I was to receive a free bag of dog food on one of their manufacturers frequent buyer programs, and was charged sales tax on the "free" bag. The owner tried to tell me that the frequent buyer program is essentially a coupon based program and that they are required by state law to turn in taxes on all transactions. That might be a valid point, however if I have a 0.20 cent coupon off of a dollar, I pay taxes on 0.80 cents not on the dollar. So if I get a 100% discount on a frequent buyer program where you buy 12 and get the 13th free 100% discount is zero! How can you say you have to collect tax on what is supposed to be a zero transaction. Very poor customer service. All of the double talk in the world could not make this any more valid. I will be finding a new store based on principle alone! read more

A nice store with friendly employees. I have a curly long haired dog that I use this horse brand called cowboy magic on his coat to help prevent matting. It's a miracle oil for my dogs hair... anyways they didn't carry it. I wasn't surprised because this store is geared torwards dog, cat, fish, and reptile stuff. Cowboy magic is used normally for show horses so like I said I wasn't shocked they didn't carry it however they were willing to try to order it!! Pretty nice and great service I unfortunately had to have it that day because he was getting groomed that afternoon. I'll defiantly be back here for his dog food and it makes me happy supporting a local store. read more

I love this place. They sell top quality products, have extremely knowledgeable staff, and truly care about your pets. We went in to get items for a sick kitty and the clerk told us what we had picked out wouldn't help and not to waste the money. We ended up walking out without even buying anything but the clerk still sat and gave us a lot of very useful information for about half an hour. I will buy all of my pet food and supplies from this store simply because the staff truly cares about the animals, and not just making money. I usually buy my toys for my dogs here because they are better than the major stores. Usually when I buy dog toys somewhere else the toys get ripped up easily but at this store the toys last a bit longer. Also they have a cool cat that wonders the store haha. The toys are a tad bit more expensive but I am paying for quality. I also bought dog tags here and they were very helpful with that. They are also very pet friendly in this store. I stumbled across this pet store on accident and I'm so glad I did! I've been going there for a few years now. They have great brands of pet food, actual healthy pet foods not the kinds full of grains and fillers, which is what I was looking for as I was trying to find a local place to get Orijen dog food. They have a great variety and even special ordered (and now carry) a limited ingredient version of Acana dog food for my baby with allergies. The staff is very helpful and friendly! read more

Went to this store after an unsucessful trip to Reigning cats and dogs. I was looking for something safe to stop other animals from urination on my front yard, they all want to sell you a pill to give your dog. I explained I did not want to change my dog's ph and why do these small business owners try to play doctor ? As a side not I would never by food where they have free roaming cats that piddle on the bags or walk all over the treats. there is a reason they tell people to be careful cleaning litter boxes. read more

She's the alpha female in the house so she still prances around with both toys everyday and thinks she's the sole owner. Still working with Buddy to learn how to enjoy them. And about Discount Pet Food, it's a great store. I've been going there for 10 years now; I buy my lovebirds' food there. They have fresh food for my little guys. I also now buy the dogs' food there. Discount carries many brands at decent price points. And I can't forget the staff- they are friendly, knowledgeable and even carry the 40# bags of dog food to my car for me! I love them! read more

I have been shopping at this store for years now, the staff has always been very friendly and helpful. This is the reason I am giving this store one star. I have a cat who is on a special diet and this is the store I have always purchased the food from, I had run out of food for the cat the night before and was unable to get to the store before it closed due to my work schedule. Knowing that it was a holiday weekend and the store would be closed on Monday I was determined to get there before it closed on Sunday evening. However in the process of getting there I had a tire blow out while on the freeway, so I called my husband in a panic and said run down to the store not run to my rescue. I called the store and told them my dilemma and that my husband was on his way and would be there at any minute and I was told that the doors are locked at 5:30p. My husband arrived a few minutes before 530p and the doors were already locked. I'm sure the staff personal had a wonderful weekend planned and just wanted to get going home. I don't blame them, I probably would have wanted to go home as well. I have decided that I will no longer be taking my business there due to this incident. read more
