It was a little small for the price, but it was really delicious and satisfying. My friend got the chocolate coconut croissant and loved it. That was a good size. A very ok place for brunch. Located in Fashion Island across from Bloomingdales, Scratch Bakery is a cute space for brunch, pastries, and coffee. I ordered their eggs Benedict and lavender milk tea. The eggs Benedict was very ok. The eggs themselves were over cooked and unlike other spots, the yolk was not runny (look at photo). The hollandaise sauce was hard and cold, about the texture of sour cream. The lavender milk tea however was decent! So I would go back for drinks. read more

Despite the great location, I've never been a fan of most of the food choices here at FI. Why? There are some "sit down" places with wait service and a food court down at the bottom of the indoor section, but, until now, nothing that got me interested in actually dining here, rather than simply going out into greater NB and CM which have plenty of excellent restaurants. Well, thank to Scratch I actually had my first lunch in FI since...well, I don't really remember, although I did have breakfast at Great Maple in early 2020. Anyway, this is a great addition to FI. The sandwiches were both excellent: TRADITIONAL CLUB SANDWICH On House Baked Sourdough with Bacon, Turkey, Mayo, Lettuce & Tomato RONNIE G ON RYE House Cured Pastrami Served Hot with Whole Grain Mustard, Sauteed Onion, Provolone Cheese, Hashbrown Patty and a Fried Egg The Club had tons of crispy, smoked, delicious...bacon! My only issue was the turkey was a bit thin and didn't really add much to the sandwich. The Ronnie G was super delicious. I enjoyed the almond croissant and avocado toast with a fried egg. The avocado toast was well seasoned and tasted fresh. I'll be trying the cinnamon roll next time I'm here! I recently tried Scratch Bakery at Fashion Island with some family members. I went on a Tuesday morning around 10am and it was mildly busy, but noticed it was getting busier when we finished eating around 11am. Solid food, service and ambiance made for an overall a pleasant experience. FOOD (4/5): Of the two entrees, I preferred the Monte Cristo to the Scratch French Toast, although both were good. The London Fog was my favorite item (basically a hot milk tea). Definitely would recommend for anyone trying Scratch for the first time. The Latte tasted fine but was just a regular coffee. The Nutella cruffin was very flaky - I liked the combination of textures between the nutella part and the cruffin part. The nutella was obviously sweet but combined with the cruffin it definitely wasn't overly so. The Coconut custard cake was very light and had a mild coconut taste, almost to the point where you could taste the custard just as much. Slightly on the dry side. SERVICE (4/5): The staff here was very nice. The cashier who helped us with our order took time to explain what some of the different desserts and pastries were. She recommended a few items, including the eclairs which looked really good but I ended up getting the Nutella cruffin and coconut custard, which she was also recommended. Overall very pleasant AMBIANCE (4/5): The interior was nicely decorated with a couple of good instagram-able spots. While there was plenty of indoor seating, we opted to sit outside as it was still very cool in the morning. Unfortunately there were a lot of birds at the tables directly outside the bakery, so we ended up sitting at the tables next to the fountain, which was very nice. Going to Fashion Islands is one of the most calming things to do.... In addition to having great stores and boutiques, the view of ocean and its coasty-weather is just amazing..... But then after walking around somuch, I always need a charging station and that is where this bakery comes to my rescue..... Every single time! Their service is fast and friendly... We all had avocado toast with a fried egg on top and we all had the same opinion - so darn dry and flavorless. Not worth the money. Worst avocado toast I have ever had. Large portions but lacking of spice/flavor. Nice atmosphere but I didn't appreciate the jar at the counter that basically said I need tips or I will starve. Not very classy. My little girl had no complaints which is suprising since she's usally such a picky eater. My son seemed to like the food too. The customer service was good too! Their website claims the food is made from scratch, they are "classically trained mom-inspired chefs, using organic, real ingredients". These statements come directly from their website: "Who would call themselves "Scratch" and not live up to it? Here, it's more than a name -- it's our promise".... "Our Scratch family makes every dish from the highest-quality real ingredients every single day -- we are a true scratch kitchen". I personally am a nutritional chef with years of experience and what I experienced at this establishment did not live up to their promise. We spend 4 days a week in Newport Beach for sports that my boys are members of, so I am constantly scouring yelp to find us our food community. Because we are gluten intolerant, we can only eat baked goods made either with imported flour or that go through a slow fermentation using a starter or mother (We stay away from gluten free baked products because they are full of processed ingredients and loaded with refined sugars that only further aggravate the gut). I came upon Scratch and read through their website and thought we would give it a try. The moment we walked up to the counter, I asked about the sourdough bread used for the french toast to confirm it was made with the starter. Unfortunately, none of the employees know anything about the ingredients of what they serve. We took a chance and ordered The Rooster which had french toast, two eggs, applewood smoked bacon, pork sausage and a hash brown patty. made with your choice of house baked sourdough or gluten free bread. I asked for the eggs to be scrambled soft. When it arrived, the eggs were not scrambled soft and they were dry. In fact they didn't even look like they were from fresh eggs. The sausage looked like a hockey puck and the hash brown patty looked like it came from a frozen commercial package. My boys each had a french toast and what I noticed when they were pouring the syrup, the syrup did not pour like real maple syrup. It was more viscous like corn syrup rather than the thinner, more liquid like consistency of maple syrup. So then I tasted it and it barely had any maple taste to it. The consistency and taste was gross. I had to ask... What they pulled out from under a counter in the back was a commercial size bottle of artificial Corn Syrup based yuk! So appalling... I was going to purchase a bunch of their knock knocks, But I just don't trust this business at all. read more
