OH MAN! Where do I begin?! I don't normally write a review so soon after visiting somewhere but I just HAVE to for Scratch! The service is superb; the staff is attentive & warm. They don't linger but are easy to talk to & they appear as if out of thin air whenever you need something. They give off that GENUINE friendly feeling that sets the tone for the whole place. I also like that even though you mostly have one set server for your table, the others still come over to drop off your food & drinks or ask if you'd like something to drink besides water. I absolutely LOVE restaurants like this! It makes me feel like the staff works as a TEAM rather than "sorry, you aren't my table so I can't help you". Second, the location is also great. South Shore Market has to be one of, if not, THE only place in town that offers FREE PARKING! This shopping center is big, beautiful, bright & clean. I was, pleasantly, shocked when I went to the restroom (Scratch shares the common restrooms with the shopping center) & it was SPOTLESS & SMELLED GOOD!!! Whaaaat?!? What is this sorcery?!? Lastly, the food. OMG Yelpies, the FOOD! The fooooooood! Sooooo good! I ordered "The Elvis" & ate every. single. Bite. It was HEAVEN. Easily the BEST French toast I have ever had! & I make it a point to try the French toast at every brekkie spot I hit up. The Elvis was, hands down, better than Egghead's & Sweet E's & that is SAYING something! My friends all ordered different dishes & we all picked off one another's. All together we had the yoga bowl, chilaquiles, Marsala roasted 'shrooms & my Elvis. Everything was yum but I was glad I ordered what I did. Their drinks are also yum! I only had one Champagne Room which was deelish & sipped my friends Good Morning Sunshine which was WHOAAAA! She nursed it throughout the entire time we were there (almost 2 hours) & still couldn't finish it. Decided to try Scratch for Sunday brunch at 8:45 am hoping there wouldn't be such a long wait. There was one open table for four but we had six in the party and they couldn't accommodate for the two end seats so we had to wait 20 min. Not too bad considering we were inside sitting in the shopping area when none of the stores were open. Got our table and ordered the iced coffee and li hing lemonade. The lemonade didn't taste fresh which would have made it that much better. The coffee was good and they put a whole coffee ice cube in there to not water the drink down. I ordered the marsala grits and somehow the waitress heard it as shrimp and grits so I got that delivered to the table instead. I also got a side of the Brussels sprouts. The shrimp and grits were good since we just moved from South Carolina and love them. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and even came without the tails so you could possibly just eat them whole if you are into the head part. I found the pickled red peppers hot and tasty to compliment the plate. The only thing I disliked was how the eggs were cooked. They were sunny side up with no runny yolk like someone forgot them in the pan. The entire bottom edge tasted like I was eating plastic from being way overdone. I avoided the egg parts after that. Next time I'm opting for poached eggs instead. The Brussels sprouts were ok, not much flavor considering they had capers and cheese on them. Great service and blew away expectations. Pork adobo loco moco, garlic rice, milk cereal pancakes were all delicious. Our son had too much juice and threw up all over the table and onto the pancakes before we got to eat it. Finally got a chance to visit this new location. So when I'm visiting my family, I suggested that we came here for brunch. The new location is very convenient with plenty of parking space. Love the design concept of the restaurant. Open kitchen and great use of the space in the dining area. Food/Drink: We started with Kim Chee Bloody Mary. It sounded weird but Kim Chee Bloody Mary works. Great balance of spice, tomato juice and alcohol. The Milk and Cereal Pancakes was disappointing. It was thought and not as fluffy as I would like. The milk syrup tasted like condensed milk. Another disappointment was the Chicken and Waffles. Chicken was bland, lacking spices and the waffles was hard. We did love the Haupia Creme Brulee French Toast. The Pork Adobo Loco Moco was outstanding and the Mushroom Grits was also good. Portion size was decent enough for us to share. Overall, they dished are all beautifully presented, well played but the taste and quality on some dishes did not meet expectations. And just thought it was lacking creativity. Service/Price : We went on a Friday model morning and it didnt take long for us to wait and get seated. The staff are welcoming, warm and attentive. Food came out pretty quickly. The price is average. With so many great places to have brunch here in Honolulu, I'm not sure if I want to come back. This place is so overhyped. Trying this place out for the first time with my co-workers, celebrating a birthday! We made reservations at 5pm and didn't get a welcoming greeting when we arrived .. not sure if the air conditioning wasn't working and it felt like a sauna. The dinner menu was tasty but we didn't expect the dishes to be designed for sharing. Nothings wrong with that, considering the dishes are reasonably priced. I attempted to order alcohol off of the menu but almost everything I wanted weren't in stock.. South Shore Market sounds so trendy, right? Throw in an eatery like Scratch Kitchen & Meatery and suddenly you get the feeling like you aren't in Kansas any more. Well in this case, you aren't in Ward as you used to know it anymore... Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. This girl is happy to see the area get an upgrade. Call it my high mainland standards, but I like the new design and vibe. What I especially like is the abundant/free parking and the alternative eating options (aka something besides Bucca, SF, D&B, Panda, BCD) ;) The wait time at this new location for Scratch is about the same as the OG location. In other words, buffer in some time for a wait. When I came during the weekday-we had to grab lunch from another place because it was a 45 minute wait....at 11:30 AM. On the weekend, the wait can be upwards of an hour. So go early, or go when you aren't hungry yet and put your name down. The ambiance at this new spot is exactly what I love-open kitchen, simple furnishings, and cheerful staff. When your water is filled automatically and various staff members swing by to ask how your meal is going...it is safe to say that you're at a quality place. Oh, and of course the food didn't disappoint either ;) We family styled our brunch and my favorite was surprisingly the Boudin Fritters (which I probably wouldn't have ever ordered). A mixture of seasoned rice and their breakfast sausage-fried into perfect bites. Mmmmm....worth the $5 add on. For me, the staple dish at Scratch has always been the Grits so when I opted to try the Pork Schnitzel Sammy-it was an automatic that I added on the Cheddar Grits. While the sammy wasn't something that I'd find myself craving (honestly I wanted the mufalletta which wasn't on the brunch menu)-it was decent. I enjoyed the arugula contrast with the pork schnitzel. The Cheddar Grits were solid and the other bites I had provided a well-rounded sampling of the brunch options at Scratch Kitchen & Meatery. Would I come back? Absolutely. Upon entering the restaurant Brina greeted our party with an amazing energy and beautiful smile that you could feel under her mask. She made our night so fun and had excellent customer service and continued to make our dining experience flawless. Food was amazing. CIDER BRAISED PORK BELLY & APPLE PASTA $15 Hand-cut pasta, jalapenos, bleu cheese, topped with a 63-degree egg** Anytime I see "hand-cut pasta" on the menu, I gotta have it. Hand-cut pasta has an appealing rustic look and I really appreciate the extra "bite." The 63-degree egg adds a mild richness that really rounds out the whole dish. **63-Degree Egg What is it? An egg cooked in its shell in a 63-degree Celsius water bath for an hour. 63C is the supposed temperature where the yolk and whites become the same, even texture and consistency. "MILK & CEREAL" PANCAKES $11 Sliced banana + berries + "milk" syrup I liked these pancakes better when I tried 'em this time around. My suggestion is to be gentle with the syrup at first, especially if you're worried about it being too sweet like I was. WARM BRUSSELS + REGGIANO $5 Who doesn't love Brussels sprouts?! The restaurant entrance is fronting Queen Lane, near the SSM Diamond Head entrance, and is not accessible from the South Shore Market guts. I found this out by walking around in circles. Make your way to the Diamond Head entrance or just walk outside to Queen St. and walk in the mauka direction until you see Scratch on your left-hand side shortly after the SSM doors. Hope that helps. SERVICE Be sure to check in with the host/hostess when you arrive; sometimes there can be a bit of a wait. Service is friendly and helpful. However, I did notice that the timing of dishes were kind of off. The Brussels sprouts arrived first; followed by a side order of bacon. My pasta arrived about 10 min. later, with the pancakes following shortly thereafter. Weird timing. VERDICT Good price, good service, and great food. I like this more focused type of a menu -- rather than a storybook of a billion dishes to choose from -- that they do here. The ambiance is casual with an open kitchen concept. If you sit close to the kitchen you will get a healthy serving of hearing the chef scold and berate the servers and cooks while you eat. A la Hell's Kitchen. I was indifferent to this but some may find this uncomfortable. The food is delicious. We shared the BBQ ribs appetizer, House Burger, and Calentado. The ribs were good. More of a rub than a sauce but we enjoyed the flavor and tender pork ribs. The House Burger was ok. It was cooked perfectly but I felt it was lacking flavor. Probably because it comes as a basic cheeseburger and you would have to add toppings at a charge. The Calentado was very good and is one of their most popular dishes. The barbacoa was tender and flavorful. You have your choice of how you want your egg prepared. We got it over easy which I like because of the added richness of the runny yolk but we saw some go out with scrambled egg. The service was average. Nothing was bad but nothing went above and beyond or stood out to us. They weren't as attentive with our drink refills as I would have liked but that's about it. First time dining here today and went there for breakfast based on a friend's recommendation saying, "you're going to thank me." No thanking will be given today, my friend. Sorry. Upon looking at the menu, I needed to ask a few questions. The menu was limited so I wanted to ask about customizing my order. All I wanted was a couple of eggs, bacon and a pancake. It should be simple, I'm a scratch cook (like really...nothing processed or pre-packaged, not even pancakes) so it should have been a no brainer. The first thing I asked about was the pancakes. They only had one selection available, the Milk and Cereal Pancakes. I only wanted one, and the waitress said - no. We can't do one pancake because everybody would only order one. Fine. I'll take the Milk and Cereal Pancakes and an extra plate bc I straight up can't eat 4 pancakes so I'm taking the rest home. There were 5 people in my party, and my pancakes came out before everyone else. Like, 10 minutes before. Anyone who runs a kitchen knows you do your best to serve the entire table at the same time. Not here. Not knowing that Milk and Cereal Pancakes means you don't get maple syrup, I waited for my server to return asking for my extra plate and maple syrup. When my server didn't come back I grabbed another waitress and she said that the milk was my syrup, and then she walked away. So I waited until she came back again and asked if I could have maple syrup and she took the milk away and brought the syrup. I told her I still wanted the milk and she straight up served me the biggest platter of attitude and walked away only to return to hastily slam the milk back down on the table. REALLY?!! The pancakes were cold and dry and tasteless. All they had to do was use buttermilk, add some butter and a teaspoon of sugar and possibly a few drops of vanilla and it would have been fine. They didn't even offer butter with these. I get it, this is your creation but don't think people aren't going to want to eat it the traditional way. Even Bisquick would have tasted better than this $13 stack of sponges so I sent it back and told her they were terrible. Don't waste your money on these. My friend ordered the Pork Belly Benedict which didn't come when the rest of the table was eventually served. (sidebar, if you're hungry don't go to Scratch Kitchen. The service was slow even though the restaurant wasn't full. And don't tell me you're short-staffed. That just tells me you don't know how to hire or do a schedule) After sitting there a good 5 minutes after the rest of the table was served, my friend's Benedict arrived. The pork belly was a joke, don't even call it that. It was Canadian bacon. And she asked for it with the cabbage on the side - which it wasn't, so she had to send it back. She said it was literally the worst Benedict she's ever eaten. Without sounding like a total itch, I have to say that the Brulee French Toast that I shared with my daughter (bc I didn't want to wait for another entrée to be cooked) was amazing. Kudos to the saving grace of the table. My friends and I are all foodies that cook. From scratch. Every meal. So we have discriminating taste when we dine out and expect that when a kitchen boasts they are a scratch kitchen, it should be as good or better than what we make at home. It wasn't even close. A few weeks back, a friend asked what my favorite restaurant is. While I've been to many excellent places here, Scratch definitely is in my top three. Brian Chan's commitment to great standards in every single dish puts him in the upper class of chefs in Hawaii. I've been here many times and had many different items and have not been disappointed in a single thing I've had. The inventiveness while still pointing to creole cuisine is something nobody else does in Hawaii. He pushes the envelope with little touches that make you go hmmmm without overwhelming you with too many flavors. I don't think they take reservations, so go earlier than you think to get your name in, as the wait can be quite long. Scratch is one of my go-to brunch places! This location is extremely accessible and there is basically unlimited parking in the garage. It is usually crowded, but the wait is never unreasonably long. Most times, I get the marsala roasted shrooms, no questions asked. They NEVER disappoint and I never get tired of them. I've tried the milk and cereal pancakes (sometimes a bit salty; ask for extra buttermilk sauce), the french toast (alright, not amazing), and the steak and eggs (quite delicious). Their menu changes often, but my favorites are always there. Basically, you can order anything and it will most likely be delicious. In the near future, I am excited to try their pasta during lunch hours. The prices are not too steep. However, one of the downsides of Scratch is the payment method. If you're in a group, often times they do not ask if you want to split the check. They only accept a max of two credit cards. Additionally, for an up-and-coming, hip eating place, it is a bit disappointing that they do not accept Apple Pay. Other than that, Scratch is a great place to socialize in a cool atmosphere, catch up with friends, and enjoy a filling, satisfying meal at a reasonable price. read more

We ordered the Creme brûlée French toast, cider braised pork belly, creole shrimp and sausage grits, mushroom grits, spicy chicken waffle, and house biscuit chicken sandwich. Wow, everything was on point! You can taste the caramelized sugar on top of the French toast and it's sweet already so you don't need to add syrup. The grits were amazing especially the mushroom one cause there was a lot of garlic in it and I love garlic! The chicken in the biscuit and waffle were super crispy and moist! I like scratch quite a bit. Their menu changes with the season which I love, so there's always something new and interesting to try. However this last menu shift I'm not so in love with. The dinner menu seems to be lacking, especially if they're run out of one or more of their dishes, which happened to be the case when I was in for dinner last week. The entree choices are not that extensive, so being out of 1 or 2 really limits your choices. One the plus side, the small plates are nice, I especially liked the pastrami empanadas. Really a great mix of flavors there. The Mac and cheese was also quite good. More filling than what you'd expect and again, strong flavors. The disappointment for me was the steak. I think it was the aged ribeye or maybe strip steak? It was so lackluster I can't even recall what cut it was. It was just meh. Nothing special, no great flavors, even though it was aged. Came here on a Friday morning at 9:01 am and there was a line of about 10 people already waiting in line. 5 min after opening, we were all let in. Service was quick and attentive and very sweet. I had a lot of questions regarding the French toast I wanted and they were more than happy to answer. Had the French toast $12 And boyfriend had the pork loco moco $14 If you get the French toast you MUST order the syrup on the side. I have a sweet tooth and i barely used it. I thought it was sweet enough with the caramelized sugar coating it had. My boyfriend felt like his loco moco portion size was a bit small. Lucky for him, I got full off 2 slices of French toast so he had one to enjoy too! Disappointing and disappointing that the staff never asked if the shortcut was acceptable. The hollaindiase sauce was good. My husband ordered the steak n eggs. A much more convenient location than Chinatown! But the wait can be just as long sometimes....The first time I went, the 40 minute wait turned out to be a 15 minute wait while the second time was an actual 45 minute wait so it's a hit or miss; long story short -- come early. You get the same feel of coziness here just as you get in the Chinatown location but much roomier. The menu is practically the same with the exception of the french toast (only for the Ward location) In my opinion, the food tastes a bit better at the Chinatown location but it's still delicious and can fill you up + more parking = more appealing. read more

Went here last week for brunch with friends. Came around noon on a Sunday so of course the wait was long. We were told an hour and fifteen but we were able to get in under an hour of waiting. Instead of just sitting outside being miserable about the wait, I decided to go to look around the various shops next door. The food was pretty good with all of us getting different things and a side of the Elvis. I got the smoked salmon eggs Benedict which was served on wheat toast instead of an English muffin. I thought it was weird at first but wasn't too big of a deal for me. The food still tasted great. The salmon wasn't too salty like other salmon eggs Benedict's I've gotten so that was a plus. I thought the service was pretty great with out waters always being refilled without us asking and they kept asking if we were ok. Went here for lunch last week with my family and friends. We made a reservation and I'm glad we did, since it got crowded pretty quick. The nice hostess opened the door for us as we walked-in, which was a super nice touch and totally unexpected. Located in Ward Village South Shore Market, there's plenty of parking in the garage. As we were waiting for our final guest to arrive, we were looking at the food being delivered to the other customers, to get an idea what to order. There were so many delish choices to choose from and we were hoping to get a sneak peak of some of the dishes. We started our meal with the Warm Brussell Sprouts with Reggiano. These were grilled nicely and tasted very good. I like that they were a bit crispy. Haupia Creme Brûlée French Toast: Served with seasonal fruit and a coconut-vanilla infused maple syrup. This dish is wonderful and a must try. Fried Chicken Gumbo: Andouille, garlic rice, scallions and 2 pieces of fried chicken. Another splendid dish. Papas con Chorizo: Crispy tortilla, poached egg, refried beans, queso fresco. Very tasty. Cochon de Lait Egg Benny: Slow roasted pork, fried green tomatoes, sunny up egg, toasted brioche and taters. The pork is cooked perfectly and has good flavor. Porky Pressed Sammy: Carnitas, pastrami, genoa salami, smoked provolone on ciabatta with taters. Very good and filling. Milk & Cereal Pancakes: Bananas, berries with a milk syrup. These pancakes were a bit dry and could have used a bit more syrup. The food was really tasty and delicious. Portion size was good too. The service here is very good. The staff keep an eye on all their tables and provide very good service. Your food comes-out quickly and they don't rush you at all. read more

I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am the Scratch has opened a second location in Ward Village! If you are a fan of Scratch Kitchen & Bakery in downtown like I am, rejoice with me that they now have a location with PLENTY of FREE parking! Also, rejoice with me that you no longer have to wait in the hot sun or walk around Chinatown while you wait for your table since you can now wait in the beautiful South Shore Market (which is air conditioned) until you get that long awaited text informing you of your table which is ready! This is exciting stuff, people!! The food is just as good as it's original location, with the popular stuffed French toast and fluffy milk and cereal pancakes. My favorite, smashed potatoes come with many meals. The fancy grits are surprisingly very tasty and I highly recommend the hamakua mushroom version! It's a beautiful savory and hot dish to start off your morning! Our whole family loves Scratch and now that it is much more convenient, it is favorite breakfast/brunch spot for us! read more

Deep fried deviled eggs. This place brunch is bananas. You have to try the Milk and Cereal pancakes, but you will also need to bring a friend as it is HUGE! Perfect to soak up the many fun cocktails you will want to try out. The street tacos are delicious, but its rare I meet a taco I dont like. The Crispy Brussels are a nice starter, but the Deep Fried Deviled eggs is a must have. I ordered the Chilaquiles last time and it was good, not as spicy as I had anticipated, but very solid overall. The Spicy chicken and waffles is a better bet if you are looking for a spicy brunch. Overall this place is pleasant and i do love their patio! read more
