BUT thank goodness they opened a place closer to home and more convenient too! Ok! Let's get down to the review: Food: I want to start off by saying, "Thank You Scratch Kitchen for making a stuffed french toast that didn't make me feel guilty for eating all of it by myself!" I ordered the stuffed strawberry french toast. It was light, fluffy, and 'oh so delicious'! The french toast was stuffed with thinly sliced strawberries along with some cream cheese or something (it was creamy... not too sure what it was since the taste of it wasn't overly strong). It was not too 'fried', not oily, not greasy, not too 'heavy'; i didnt even feel an ounce of guilt when I devoured the whole thing by myself! Price: Pretty average for what you'll get. The french toast was only $11 (yay!) Ambience: Sort of loud since it is an open kitchen concept type of restaurant. Parking: free parking inside parking structure; no validation required. It was amazing! I went for brunch on a Saturday. The man originally told us 45 min wait but we waited about 30mins. The good part is you can walk around south shore market area to pass time and they'll text you when they have a table. We got the Eggs Benedict, Milk n Cereal Pancakes and Chilaquiles. We split all of it three way so we can have a little bit of each. THEY WERE ALL AMAZING. Pancakes were fluffy & filling. The milk was nice and sweet. Eggs Benedict was very tasty and savory. Three elements gave this 5 stars: -Hostess: Even though there was a wait (we came Sunday at 1:30pm), the hostess was really nice, and they text you when your table is ready so you can go do other things. In our case, we walked around the shops that were in the same area and got a coffee from a place nearby. They quoted us about an hour, but our table was ready in a half hour. When we went back, the hostess thanked us for waiting and showed us to our table. -Food: Based on some of the other reviews, I was nervous that some of the items might not be so good, as this is a new place and they could still be "working out the kinks". Nope. Not even a little bit. Everything was SUPERB! We started with the boudin fritters, and ordered the burger and chilaquiles for entrées. Now, if you go to this place and don't order the fritters..well, let's just say you're doing it wrong. The fritters are little fried balls of glory, with meat, rice, and magic inside, sitting atop a spicy, flavourful sauce. At 5 for $5, I thought they were well priced too. Next, let's address this chilaquiles misconception. I have had a lot of chilaquiles and, like nachos, anytime you put liquid on chips, they are gonna get a little soggy. The chips on our chilaquiles here had plenty of crunch and were not soggy at all, as we dug into them right when they came out. If you leave them sitting, they'll probably be soggy (refer to something called 4th grade science) but that's really your own fault. So don't let anyone tell you how to live your life - if you like chilaquiles, you should try them here, cuz they are darn good! Juts the right ratio of chicken to chips to sauce, and a good lil kick. Finally, the burger. Cooked to a perfect medium (as we asked for) with crispy pancetta bacon, oozing brie, and a sweet apple slice all on a brioche bun. Yummy in my tummy. The potatoes it comes with are whole potatoes cooked, salted, and smashed a bit. I don't like potatoes, but the bf said they were good. I would have preferred fries, but appreciate that they're trying something different. The burger also came with salad, which I did eat. Loved the dressing and the mixed greens were very fresh. A+ for everything we ordered. -Service The third point in this trifecta. Our server was so nice! Super happy, very attentive, but not overbearing. Waters were always refilled, food came out fast, and he got us more ketchup when he noticed we were running low. I didn't even have to ask! Now that's service! I came here for dinner on a Friday night. Since the restaurant was still new, it was their first night open for normal service. We had a bunch a dishes from the watermelons salad, beignets, fried oysters, Brussel sprouts, Fritas, and shrimp and grits (I can't remember the names from the menu and I forgot to take a picture of it.) Pros: -tons of parking in the structure; a huge plus from the other location in downtown -it wasn't busy probably because we went about 30 min before closing and because it was new -the kitchen is completely open and the patrons are able to see everything that goes on inside -the ambiance is more rustic than the other one. Nice wooden paneling on the walls and a darker feel to it for a more intimate dinner scene -I really liked the dinnerware they chose. They had these heavy ceramic plates that reminded me of clay art. -finally, the food was amazing. Their dishes are unique and very innovative. My favorite thing was the beignets. The corn and sauce complimented the meatiness of the dish. I wish they had more than just five on the plate. -the service was fast and great but I might be biased since we knew some of the workers so that's all I'll say about that Cons: -At first we couldn't find it walking around the south market, but we luckily went outside the building to the side and found it. I tried the mushroom grits, and it was really good. Hubs did a benedict dish that he would've liked more meat in, but taste-wise, it was good. I would definitely recommend going early, as it fills up quite quickly, and people are willing to wait (always a good sign of good food). I tried Scratch for the first time a few weeks ago and it was amazing!! We went on a Friday morning at opening and it wasn't too busy but as we were finishing our brunch, the place was full. The staff was extremely friendly and their service was top notch. The food was so delicious and the portions are very large also! The food speaks for itself, AMAZING! Our experience today, not so much. Our food took a long time to come out but we didn't complain. They came in staggered as well. By the time everyone had their dishes, the first dishes were cold. Still fine, you're busy, we get it. We got our check and paid, and waited a bit to get our leftovers boxed up. Then the host came and asked us to leave because they needed our table. I think it was in poor taste to ask us to leave so quickly after wrapping up, when majority of our time was waiting for our food to come out. We weren't just holding up the table and loitering. First time here. Saw good reviews on Yelp that drove us here. Wife ordered beef tacos and chili cheese fries while I ordered the spicy chicken and waffle and added two eggs scrambled. Food looks great and I like the portions. Chicken and waffle with scramble was okay. My scramble eggs had no taste; needed the basic seasoning of salt and pepper. I actually think the chicken was cooked perfectly; not over cooked and was crunchy but the down fall was no taste. Just needed some seasoning, simple salt and pepper. The idea of chicken and waffle sounds great and I know it's a southern dish, but having a nice hot crunchy chicken sitting on a hot waffle kills the quality of the waffle. I personally don't like my waffle soggy. I didn't like that my scramble eggs was on the waffle and chicken on top with the greens at the very top. This setup kills the dish and I get it, it's a southern dish and that's how it always been put together. If I ever go back, I would request for the chicken and waffle to be separated and not on top of each other. Unfortunately, my wife did not enjoy her tacos for the simple reason on having no taste; beef needed seasonings. Chili cheese fries was okay...from our experience today taste-wise, Zippy's chili cheese fries taste way better. The only thing that we enjoyed and love was the basil lemonade. Lemonade was da bomb. The Fiancé and I, on our date day, went out to find something new and exciting to eat. We remembered some friends posting pics about this place, so we thought we would check it out. As some of the other reviews state, getting a table can be annoying. We arrived on a Monday at 1030 and had to wait 20 minutes for a table, luckily there are shops in the area to wander through while we waited. So not too big of a deal today. Also a plus, they will text you when your table is ready, so I was comfortable wandering as far as I wanted. The restaurant is clean and new. The kitchen area is open and you can see the chefs preparing some of the food. The tables are close together and you almost feel like you are inconveniencing people as you squeeze by their table into your seat...and I am a big guy, but the tables are approx. 2 feet apart. It's cozy, but being that close to your neighbors means you are going to hear their conversation and in they will hear yours. My Fiancé ordered the burger which had brie and an apple slice. This burger was amazing. The meat was well seasoned, cooked to a perfect medium-rare and the apple and brie complimented it perfectly with a sweet and salty taste. I got the smoked salmon sandwich, which is topped with my fav, sprouts! The caper-dill cream cheese and the toasted nutty bread were a perfect vessel to carry the delicious salmon. The grits were creamy and cheesy, which is what you would expect. Not mealy and cooked very well. The deep fried smashed potatoes, were ok. I just am not a fan. It's interesting, and visually appealing, but not my favorite...but then again, I just had a huge sandwich. The "Bromosa" was very good, sweet and orangie... and yes you can taste the vodka. Last but not least, we got the milk and cereal pancakes. Now the pancakes are fluffy and have a good chew to them. The fruit was an excellent accompaniment for them. The "milk" part, which seemed to have been watered down condensed milk was not very sweet. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I would have rather had some maple syrup from Michigan on those pancakes than the "milk" syrup. It's a cute play on milk and cereal and the frosted flakes are a nice addition. I found I had to use a lot of the "milk" to sweeten the pancakes. We ate it like a dessert, so perhaps I was looking at it all wrong. I will return to try some other items that peak my interest. I came here on a Sunday during lunchtime and the wait was 1hr, which was expected. They have this system that sends you a text message when your table is ready, so that was convenient. I wasn't restricted to a certain range and this made the wait bearable because I was able to walk around the shops in South Shore Market to pass the time. The initial text message you receive also has a link that leads to the wait list so you can see exactly how many more parties are ahead of you and it also shows how many minutes you've been waiting. Food: Skillet steak & eggs - The meat was cooked to my friend's desired preference. The combination of potatoes, eggs & steak along with the Italian salsa verde went very well together (as I could tell from the one bite I had of this dish). Smoked salmon & avocado toast - It is what it is. There was nothing wrong with it, but there wasn't anything spectacular about it. I ordered it because I wanted a light meal in order to save room for the French toast. Strawberries n' cream stuffed French toast - This was delicious and it is the main reason I would come back to eat here. It was very light & fluffy and had the perfect amount of sweetness. I shared this with my friend, but next time I'm definitely getting my own order since it's a bit on the small side. Drinks: Seasonal sweet tea - This has ranked as one of my favorite sweet teas on the island. Illy coffee - It was coffee. No refills, though, so that's a small negative. Service: Our water was constantly refilled, but other than that no one really checked to see how we were doing. Scratch at Ward is located in the South Shore Market around the corner from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf/Holo Holo Market. You cannot access it from inside the marketplace so you have to walk around the block outside to get there. Maybe because it's new I'd give them some time to smooth out the wrinkles but service was fast and furious; in & out in 65 minutes. Yes, it was busy but not to the point where people were waiting for tables yet. I could not really have a relaxing breakfast here since it felt rushed or interrupted by service. Your water will be refilled the moment it falls below the three quarter mark. Milk & Cereal pancakes ($11) were fine. It was good because I was craving pancakes. Serving size was ample, but it kind of burst my bubble a little since my expectations on this dish were set high; tasted like plain ol' pancakes topped with frosted flake cereal & some fruits. The syrup was not as thick as I was expecting & this full stack needed a lot of syrup. I would only order this dish again if I have an enormous pancake crave but seeing how diverse a menu they have I'd rather order something else next time. Boudin Fritters ($5): Five pieces of less-than-golf-ball sized croquettes containing rice, pork and onions. It sat on a thin layer of Dijon-based cream sauce. I would've loved a little more sauce to sop up the deep fried fritters of yum. Southern Fizz ($3.75): A non-alcoholic refresher containing cream & lime in carbonated water was a nice accompaniment to my meal. It was barely sweetened with a splash or two of sweet. I really enjoyed this drink a lot. Smoked Salmon & Avocado Toast ($14): Got to try a bite of my brekky mate's choice & it was okay. The avocado is mashed into the toast so the avocado flavor was hardly there and the smoked salmon was robustly salted. I did not care for the sprouts but that's just me. Looks very promising. One of my favorite breakfast places - delicious & unique. I mean creme brulee French toast with caramelized sugar and all...who would have thunk of that?!?! I truly don't come here often so decided to meet my foodie friend here for a causal morning meet up. We ordered Creme Brûlée French Toast, and Loco Moco...sweet and savory to satisfy all taste buds French toast was light and absolutely delicious with caramelized sugar on top. It came with three pieces - enough to share between 2 people. We polished it...fruits and all. The loco moco was yummmy! I don't like ground beef patties so was a little hesitant to order, but so glad I did. It had a nice smokey flavor that complimented the gravy, eggs and rice beautifully! This place will rarely disappoint you. Brian has a keen touch and eye for unique flavors and you are always in for a pleasant surprise with what he has to offer.
