Found this place on Yelp (naturally) and had a great first time experience. The place is located by Ward. Whenever we're out, we try to opt for nearby street parking. But this place has a parking structure and yes, it's free! We arrived just after opening. There were a few tables already filled but still lots of room. The restaurant isn't too big but it's spacious enough. We were a party of 3 which included 1 toddler. We had our glasses filled with water, a high chair and my toddler's butter knife removed from the table as we sat. How thoughtful. First thing I noticed was the menu is very small, just barely 1 page long. The left side of the page was breakfast and the right was lunch. Drinks are not listed on the menu. But I did notice other customers seemed to have an additional page along with their menu. Hmm.. We had 3 different people servicing our table. Our glasses of water and coffee were constantly filled throughout. We waited about 10 or 15 minutes for our food which included.. -Milk n Cereal Pancakes. This was good. It was topped with bananas, strawberries and Frosted Flakes along with a sweet, milky syrup. -Loco Moco. They ask how you like your hamburger patty and eggs cooked. This was good. -Shrimp and Sausage Grits. I wanted to try something different. I'm not a big fan of shrimp or grits but wanted to be adventurous. This was good except I must have not realized that it was also served with sunny side up eggs. I am NO FAN of sunny side up! With this I have rediscovered that I do not like grits. haha. Did not disappoint. Saw a few recommendations for this place and decided it would be a cool spot for my son and I's birthday breakfast. He was delighted to find that they had "bad cereal" pancakes, which I allowed him to get as a birthday treat. Both him and my daughter enjoyed them 10/10. My husband had the pork chop with Teppan Gandule Rice 10/10, and he wouldn't stop talking about how good it was(he doesn't get pork at home, haha). He also had the deep fried deviled eggs, said they were a 9/10. My husband and children also shared the Brulee'd French toast 10/10, which they raved about. They'd never had pineapple and coconut on French toast before. The mimosas were good 8/10. I had the smashed garlic truffle potato's, they could've been slightly crispier 7/10. My friend was very excited to show me this place. I had the chicken and waffles. I love chicken and waffles but was super disappointed. The portion is monstrous but it doesn't make up for blandness. The waffle is like a lifeless pale color, that was made up for by covering in syrup. The chicken was also quite bland. The batter...I dunno what was up with it, but it wasn't particularly flavorful and the chicken didn't taste marinated. Third times the charm. I've come here with friends a few time and the wait is always so long that we ended up going to other places instead. A friend brought me here last week for my birthday. And there was no line for once. I had the BC burger and while the apple slice sounded strange it added a nice crunch to the burger. Came here because I wanted to try their infamous milk & cereal pancake! The milk they use for this isn't just regular milk, but condense milk. The portion is huge so it's super filling. I suggest if you get this then share with a few friends. The rest of their menu sounds good too. I noticed that their menu items change seasonally, so keep that in mind! I love their interior design. It's bright & modern. Something I think that's unique is their kitchen is right there & takes about a 1/4 of the space. You can see the chefs making the food, but you can't smell the food from the kitchen. They have great service too! This is a farm to table type of restaurant, so fresh ingredients and very limited items on the menu. This location is cozy and somewhat small but has a nice open vibe overlooking the Chefs as they prepare the delicious meals. The wait was a bit long, maybe 30 minutes. Very eclectic menu, so don't expect a wide variety to choose from. The French toast I saw brought out made my mouth water. Very thick bread that would fill anyone up. I ordered the Poached Eggs over rye, which was extremely unique. A thick rye bread--maybe 3 inches laid on the plate with a bed of fresh greens on the bread, with the finishing touch of two freshly poached eggs---topping the meal off. It typically comes with bacon, however I opted w/o. I'm not a fan of poached eggs, thought I'd give it a try anyway, still not a fan. I am found of the presentation of the dish though. Dropped in this place for Saturday morning breakfast. The place was packed at 9:00 am but we got a table pretty quickly. The menu is a great one-pager menu that makes choosing a meal easy, but the food is anything but simple. Wifey started with the Kimchi Bloody Mary; I had iced coffee...by the way nice detail that they put coffee ice cubes in the iced coffee!! I had the Southern Fried Chicken and Waffle, and yes I added the egg! It is a huge dish that can easily be shared...correction, it should be shared! (I'm stuffed). Wifey had the Chilequile with chicken. We added a side of bacon since the word "meatery" is in the name of the place. We enjoyed everything - the service, the drinks, the food, the music (Motown Soul) and even the ladies annoying loud fake-ass laugh sitting next to us..she was entertaining. Came here for a girls night this past week. We walked in and was kindly greeted by the hostess. She asked if we had reservations and it caught us off guard because on their Yelp page, it stated they don't take reservations!! I guess it is sort of our bad for not continuing on to their website. Anyway, we said no and told her we didn't know they took reservations. She said they do, only between 5 - 6:30 pm. Scratch is one of my favorite brunch spots in Kaka'ako, and I like it because the menu changes every season. While that can be sad because your favorite dish will be gone one day, it's also nice because you get to try new things and not be tempted to stick to the same ol' eggs benedict. That being said, while there is variety, there are also menu staples you can count on. I usually order any Eggs Benedict on the menu, even though you an expect a slight variation each season. It also comes with their smashed taters, which are my absolute FAVORITE. I always get a side if my main dish doesn't come with them. The 'Milk N' Cereal' Pancakes ($12) are also a restaurant staple. I like to order it when I feel like pancakes, but I can never finish. It's a good dish to share, as it comes with several pancakes stacked thick and high with a "milk" syrup to pour over at your discretion. I also recommend the ice coffee if you're a caffeine addict. Three words: Coffee ice cubes!! Kiss your watery coffee goodbye. Only thing I don't like about Scratch is that they don't take reservations for breakfast and lunch, so the wait can get long. Although, when you do walk-in, you can opt to have them send you a text when your table is ready so you can shop in the meanwhile. Service was excellent and I just can't stop daydreaming about the meal we had there! The Rustic Brussels are unreal, best sprouts I've ever had. Just because it looks good, doesn't mean it taste good. My friend and I have birthdays 3 days apart so we decided to do brunch here together on January 24. I ordered the Escargot to start. It was my favorite part of the meal. The garlic butter was delicious. Then, for the main dish, I had the Creole Shrimp N' Sausage. My pet peeve is when shrimp is not peeled do I have to dog through my food just to peel it. The flavors were nonexistent. They could've at least added salt. I ate it but my friend, who got the Spicy Southern Fried Chicken N' Waffle, was so disappointed. The first plate she made was dry. It was barely edible. She had to tell them. They made a new one so the chicken was moist but again, no flavor. It was just breaded chicken and thats it. She also had the Deep Fried Deviled Eggs and it was extremely underwhelming. Came to scratch because I saw that there was a live DJ but it didn't really have the vibe and quality of food I was expecting. I ordered the "pasta" and almost immediately regretted it. It wasn't pasta at all. The noodles are chow fun noodles or made with the same ingredients and the sauce and additions were like a stir fry type of meal. It was definitely an Asian dish and is very inaccurately called pasta. Not all noodle dishes can be called "pasta," just like not all raw fish meals can be called "poke." If it isn't even at least Italian fusion, *especially* if the noodles are not pasta noodles then it shouldn't be called pasta. The other thing I was disappointed about was the atmosphere. What drew us was the DJ and we were expecting a really hip joint but most of the patrons were much older and there were quite a few families. I was expecting a more lively and youthful atmosphere but this is definitely not that kind of place lol. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, it just wasn't what I expected). I underestimated the portion because the pancakes were huge enough to feed 2-3 people. That wasn't enough to deter me from finishing off the bacon though, because they were cooked to perfection. We got their Pork Adobo Loco Moco (4/5), Milk and Cereal Pancakes(4.5/5), and a side of smashed potatoes(4/5)! The loco moco is unique because of the adobo, instead of a burger patty. I liked but I think I'll try something new next time. The pancakes are loaded with fruity pebbles, Frosted Flakes, blueberries, and strawberries. The syrup is really nice! I would suggest sharing this with someone and getting a more savory dish as well, because I don't know how someone would eat only this as their meal. It was a little too much. Parking... Free parking in the TJ Max building. Just take the elevator down to the first floor and walk through the new shops. With the wait as long as it is, you'll be able to spare some free time walking around. Wait time... We were quoted about an hour and 15 minutes. (90 mins) and got sat in 55 mins. It's nice that they have a texting system to inform you that your table is ready. They also managed to get their waitlist online which gave us an idea of where we were in the wait as well as how long we had been waiting. Food... Food did take a while to get to the table. I ordered the smoked salmon eggs benny. Very flavorful with the caper cream cheese! Girlfriend had the calentado. A smaller dish, but very tasty. Both dishes were $15 each. A little pricey for the portion, but worth it. Service... Service was great! Everyone helps each other out. There isn't just one server, so I assume they share their tips. We never felt rushed and someone was always by when we needed something. I would definitely recommend coming here! I will for sure make it out again. First time there we went during brunch. Waited 10-15 mins for a table. Love the environment and decor of the restaurant. The only issue is I feel like the counter around the kitchen is pretty messy. I like being able to hear and see the chefs talk and work, but if the could straighten up the counter and maybe also put up some plexiglass cause I feel like I was sitting right on peoples food being picked up. Food and drink wise, I got the plantation iced tea. For some reason I feel like it should be sweet, but I guess since the called it ICED tea instead of sweet tea they get a pass. The tea was not my cup of tea lol. I got the shrimp and grits which was really good. The sausage really brought the flavor to the dish, without it. The food would have been flavorless, the grits were creamy though, just needed some salt and pepper. I also go the chicken and waffles. Again no flavor, the chicken was really bland to me, and a little bit soggy batter on the inside. The waffle was not it. My husband had the cereal pancakes. We have high expectations for pancakes, because the best pancakes we have ever had is the original pancake house in Honolulu. Comparing the two, I could just make the cereal pancakes at home. I tried the Kalbi MOCO and the Benedict. Both dishes were presented well, but missing flavor. The Kalbi Moco came out as a hamburger patty. I did not taste any hint of Kalbi. The benedict was bland and the potatoes weren't anything special. The service was good we had numerous waitresses and waiters checking on us. The location and atmosphere is nice.
