We had ordered the chicken appetizer and the server asked what dipping sauce she wanted. My daughter asked if she could try all three (as in some yelp pictures) and the server cut her off and said "yeah" in a rude way and didn't even look at her. We were super stoked to try this place when we saw pictures and made a reservation asap since it can get very crowded, so they recommend reservations! We ordered the cajun garlic shrimp, milk & cereal pancakes, & bruleed french toast and unfortunately, nothing really stood out. The food definitely took a while to come out as well. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, but both the pancakes and french toast were overly sweet and kind of underwhelming. The shrimp was cool, but average and not worth the price. Parking is super easy since they have a structure and the ambiance of the restaurant is really nice. Probably just expected too much. Had lunch with Traci T. to catch up on all-things-life. Ordered the Southern Fizz, a non-alkie drink not featured on the menu. It reminded me of a carbonated key lime pie refresher... nice with the hot, humid weather we've been having. The boudin fritters were recommended by a lovely couple waiting outside with us to be seated. At first, the fritters were very tasty! Ground pork (?) and rice in battered, golfball-sized boluses had a zesty citrus aioli with it. A couple of bites later though, and we both noticed it was too salty. Perhaps it was a bad batch, always room for entrees... Traci got the pork adobo loco moco, and I the low country eggs benny. While neither were bad, we couldn't say it was great either. The loco moco had pickled onions garnished atop the mound, but the flavor did not meet well with the pork and eggs. The eggs on the benny was poached well, but the ham was on the drier side and, once again, the red onions appeared to offset the balance of flavors. A big heap of ketchup accompanied the dish but I wondered if it was for the potatoes, benny or salad? Service was pleasant, but got slower... and slower by the time we received our final plates. We had to call the server to our table for our check after waiting about 20 minutes with our uneaten dishes. Maybe we chose the wrong dishes. Or the service was a beat or two off. Nonetheless, the dining room is much more spacious than their downtown counterparts and the vibe is a relaxed rustic design that I really dug. Scratch is a solid place to go for a casual meal. I've been her for lunch and brunch a few times. It has a nice, modern warehouse/country barn feel with good mellow music playing in the background. We came on a Saturday morning at 10:45, expecting a long wait during this prime brunch time. We put in my name and number and went to Nordstrom Rack to browse when they told us it would be about half an hour. 20 minutes later, I got a text, replied 2 to say we're on our way, and were shown our table as we walked in. I really like this method of waiting instead of having to sit around. We moved across the street recently, so we didn't have to deal with parking. We saw a lot of cars waiting for parking as we walked around, so that's something to plan for on a weekend during Christmas shopping season. I ordered the Smoked Salmon Benedict and my wife ordered the Brûlée French Toast. Both were excellent. I'm not a French Toast fan, but that was probably the best French Toast I've ever tasted! The service was quick and efficient. Overall, it was a great experience for a Saturday brunch. While it's not my first choice for brunch, I highly recommend it as a solid choice. read more

Went there last night for the first time and enjoyed our first dine-in experience since the lockdown. All the tables were spaced out and all workers wore masks. Our servers were very attentive and friendly. Food was amazing! The Brussel sprouts were super tasty with the shoyu vinaigrette-must try!! The fries were super yummy but it's a very small portion considering the price. Fried devil eggs were pretty good. I especially enjoyed the Chicken-n-waffles! I really wanted to like Scratch Kitchen more because the vibe is awesome and it's really convenient but I found the dishes we ordered to be just ok. Parking is free in the structure shared with TJ Maxx and Pier 1 Imports. It's technically part of the new South Shore Marketplace but the entrance is on the outside of the building by coffee bean. Inside feels modern with a huge open kitchen so you can watch them whipping up the food. The hostess wasn't the friendliest but it's cool how they will text you when your table is ready and you can click on a link to check as your name moves up the list. On a Friday morning (10:30am) we waited about 40 minutes. I ordered the cider braised pork belly & apple pasta ($15). The hand cut pasta texture was perfectly al dente. I liked the garnish of radish and a soft boiled yolky egg on top and the tenderness of the pork belly slices. However, I found this dish to be too vinegary and the bleu cheese was too overpowering for the sauce. Also the noodles were kind of sticking together. The milk and cereal pancakes looked beautiful with fresh bananas, berries, and frosted flakes on top ($11). The stack of four pancakes were a bit dry and not as fluffy as I like it. I did enjoy the "milk" syrup though, it wasn't overly sweet and I liked how it was presented on the side so you can add it as you go without over saturating the pancakes all at once. Our server was attentive though and our waters were frequently refilled. Overall, I wasn't impressed by what I tried but they change up their menu seasonally so maybe I'll have another go. read more

If it wasn't for the good food I would've gave it a 1 star experience. We got in at 10am and asked 3x to order. It took them 10min to finally take our order. The waiter said it's because they were short staffed. As a customer you should not have to ask more than twice to order. This is a busy location, management should maybe train more than 1 guy to handle orders. The food here is just as good as the original Scratch from downtown. The food would've tasted better if the service was a bit more friendly with a smile. They need to fix their first impression when a customer comes into dine. I'm not impressed with this location. Knowing that I was already pissed off they should of at least comp the coffee or at least say Sorry for the wait. I don't think I'll return here for a while. I'll monitor the experience of others to see if I should ever return or recommend this place to anyone. read more

When I had to wait for half an hour even though I was one and there seemed to be plenty of empty tables, I was honestly pissed and considered leaving. But since I had some time in my hands I stayed. I expected the food to be disappointing as well but it was not bad, to my surprise. I got the classic and the eggs, bacon, and the roasted potatoes were perfectly cooked. I went here with a group of friends for our annual Christmas get together. It was one of the last Fridays of the month, so we expected it to be super crowded, but it was the Friday that the area lost power, so once we found parking, the restaurant itself was pretty empty. We dined with the dimmed lights, and it was quite romantic and adventurous! Since they cook with gas, they were able to accommodate us and serve any of the dishes. The menu states that the items are meant for sharing, which is always how I love to eat - I seem to get bored with one large monotonous dish - but the group decided to order and enjoy our own dishes. I ordered the chicken confit with creamy mashed potatoes and greens. The first thing that struck me about the dish was the crispy honey glazed chicken skins that were atop the chicken. Yum! The crispy chicken skins went perfectly with the rich potatoes. The chicken itself probably could've been a little more moist, especially given that they were thigh pieces, but it was a really enjoyable, hearty, and comforting dish overall. I also probably would've liked if the greens were on the side, rather than at the bottom of the mashed potatoes, but maybe that's just my preference. I tried my friend's $7 brussel sprouts, and they were pretty fantastic and easily worth sharing with the table (probably too much for one normal person to consume at once!). There was a crowd on this Sunday morning. Good thing my cousin had made a reservation for our party of 8. Everything on the breakfast menu sounded good. What we tried: Smoked salmon and avocado toast topped with a poached egg, milk and cereal pancakes, strawberry and cream stuffed French toast, and a side of Brussels sprouts. Everything was unbelievably delicious!!! The smoked salmon avocado toast was topped with a creamy hollandaise sauce and sprouts, and served with really tasty crisp smashed potatoes. The pancakes are unique--a moist stack topped with bananas, berries and cereal flakes and instead of syrup, served with creamy milk to pour over the top. The French toast was to die for. The Brussels sprouts were cooked in a soy sauce and balsamic vinegar sauce with capers. Service was pretty good. Our server was friendly and attentive. I was given an hour wait time at 10am on a Sunday but after a few minutes a spot at the bar opened up. I had my heart set on the new fried chicken eggs benedict so I only glanced at the menu. They have quite a few different items from the downtown location so it's absolutely worth a visit! Their menu changes seasonally so there's a perfect reason to keep coming back. Plus there's more parking and shops to walk around to for the wait at this location. Now onto the goods: this was the best fried chicken breakfast I've ever had. The chicken was flavored with what I think was Crystal hot sauce - if you haven't had it it's a Louisiana staple that adds a vinegar twang and pop of spice necessary for savory breakfasts and poboys. It included two huge pieces with a poached egg on each, hollandaise and thick toast to soak it all up. Their smashed tators rounded out the plate just in case you didn't eat enough that you hate yourself yet. Kidding!! Treat yo'self!! This sure gives their Elvis French toast a run for its money and likely stealing the award for best dish at Scratch. Went here to see what all the hype was about. Waited roughly about 40 minutes to be seated, which is a significantly smaller wait time than the typical eating times. Once seated we were greeted with friendly faces and was notified about their rotating seasonal menu. The seats are placed a little close to each other so you can definitely hear each other's conversations and feel as if you're dining with them as well. We had ordered the apples and cream stuffed French toast, the BLT Benedict, and the boudin fritters. . The French toast was absolutely amazing and the boudin fritters were very tasty. I would recommend trying the fritters, they are unique but I would relate them to deep fried juicy meat balls. The BLT Benedict had buffalo sauce on it, which didn't really mesh with the dish.. I wouldn't recommend this unless you like buffalo sauce. It did come with a huge slab of fried chicken. All of these were delicious, although not delicious enough where I would endure the wait for this again while my hunger lingers. Made a reservation for 1:30pm yesterday afternoon (Monday, June 15th) with my best friend. The atmosphere is pretty friendly and cozy. A cute little restaurant with a natural feel. I liked the open kitchen a lot, but it does make the restaurant a little bit more noisy than it needs to be. (I was startled by the sudden dropping of plates by the line cooks.) Genuinely surprised that so many people were there, but I guess it makes sense as one of the new "trendy" brunch places on the island. My friend and I got the Smash Potatoes as an appetizer ($6 plus $2 for garlic and truffle oil). It took around maybe 10-15 minutes for our appetizers to come out. Not an insane wait, but I was pretty restless since I was pretty hungry. For entrees, I ordered the Braised Pork Belly Benny ($18) while my friend the House Burger ($18 plus $2 for bacon). Both were below average to say the least. My salad was barely dressed, and the house dressing was lacking the citrusy flavor I was expecting. The hollandaise sauce was probably the best thing on my plate, but I was shocked that it came out cold! In fact, my entire meal was kinda lukewarm as if it had been sitting out for a while. My friend was also disappointed in the portion sizes. While the burger had two patties, they were so small that it wasn't enough to make her feel satiated. It was ridiculous that literally only 5 small potatoes were included on the side. What a rip off. Good thing we ordered more during the appetizer round, which was still not enough food. Service was pretty disappointing. Our waiter was relatively nice, but he was barely there, probably because they are short-staffed. I tried to strike up more conversation, but he was kinda awkward and didn't talk very much. Overall, not the best dining experience, and the food was subpar. I left feeling more hungry than when I came in. The prices were also insanely high. For just the two of us, our bill came out to around $51 plus tip. Probably will never come back. read more

Got an itch for a new and bright eatery in South Shore Market? Look no further but allow your dining itch to be relieved by Scratch Kitchen & Meatery. But, wait...doesn't this restaurant name sound familiar? Of course it does, this is the second site of Chinatown's Scratch Kitchen & Bake Shop. We knew that they'd be busy on a Sunday morning but we were excited to check them out. After parking in the parking structure attached to TJ Maxx, Pier 1 and South Shore Market AKA Ward Village Shops, we made our way into this restaurant's entrance on Queen Lane. We signed in, provided our phone number for seating availability via text and were informed the wait would be 1 hour. The restaurant's entrance was crowded with people who had already signed in and the dining room was filled with happy diners so we decided to roam about South Shore Market. We were amazed that within 15 minutes, we were called and they had set a table for us and 2 friends (Jan K and her BF). Admittedly, it wasn't even near noon but, hey, it's noontime somewhere else in the World so we all started off with Kimchee Bloody Mary's. What? Kimchee in a tomato juice-based drink? I must say that I was surprised at how the flavors worked together and sort of wished that the garnish would have been included rather than the typical celery stalk, lemon and lime wedges. It was tasty but I think it could've used a little bit more spice and vodka. Our table of 4 shared 2 appetizers: 1- Boudin Fritters and 2- Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Reggiano. Both were flavorful and texturally pleasing. We even ordered a second plate of the Boudin Fritters. Our dining mates ordered the muffaletta and chilaquiles. The portions were quite generous. Although Scratch's kitchen put their "spin" on each of these menu items. We were also surprised by the kitchen when they brought us an order of Strawberries n' Cream Stuffed French Toast to "make up for" the longer cooking time for the chilaquiles. My husband ordered the blt benny ($13) which was constructed with pastrami seasoned bacon, soft poached egg, griddled tomato slices atop toasted marble rye and napped with black pepper Hollandaise. The open-faced "sandwich" was served with smashed roasted potatoes. He enjoyed his dish and didn't leave a crumb on his plate. I ordered the cider braised pork belly and apple pasta ($15). The pork belly was tender and mildly flavored while the apple pasta's slight sweetness balanced the porky goodness. The hand-cut apple pasta was al dente but seemed cut like thick pappardelle. Our server advised me to mix the poached egg and chunks of bleu cheese into the heat hot pasta to allow the egg yolk to sauce the dish along with the melting bleu cheese. Service was attentive and quick from both the kitchen and server. The restaurant was busy yet there didn't seem to be any lapses in the work flow. We never felt rushed while dining, our water glasses were consistently refilled and our server checked on us several times during our dine. Even though Scratch Kitchen & Meatery has only been opened for a short time, we could see how well the staff was trained. Oh my word. A second Scratch restaurant. They've outdone themselves. A larger space with more seating? Check. More parking? Check. New menu items? Check. I've always been a fan of Scratch. Their menu is very similar to the original restaurant with more lunch options and dinner options on the way. (It gets better, if that's even possible)! We tried their special of the day, which was a Buttermilk Fried Oyster Benny. It came on a thick slice of multigrain bread, bacon and an Old Bay Hollandaise Cajun Remoulade. It was good but the Hot Pressed "Muffaletta" was the winner of our meal. It's basically a pork melt sent from Heaven. Pulled pork, a thick slice of ham, veggies and cheese are melted between ciabatta bread. There's a nice kick to it as jalapenos joined the party. The unbelievable melt is served with a side of greens and their notorious taters. Crispy taters. I've always been in awe of their perfectly cooked taters. I mean, they do it so well...soft on the inside and crispy on the outside and seasoned perfectly with salt. We also tried the Boudin Fritters which is a really nice twist on hush puppies. The inside is some type of hash and the outside was perfectly crisp and the mustard-like sauce that comes with it complements the fritters very well. I left with a couple of their Lilikoi strawberry muffins and was not disappointed. I can't wait to go back and try more of their specials. The Ward area is very lucky to have Scratch there; it definitely is a great addition to their block. Last, but definitely not least, they still provide great customer service. We came right before they open and there was already 5 people ahead of us. Woman at the front asked if we have reservations and I said sorry we do not. Then she asked if I can put our names on the list (we were 4th on the list). We are tourist so we had no clue of this but they were nice enough to sit us..Yet they bluntly talk about how there's another group with no reservations. Right in front of our face and my bf heard them talk about it again among themselves. Waiting was not a problem to us bcoz waiting for food in Hawaii is common to certain spots you want to attend. Food was alright but I won't be coming back... We were uncomfortable seating there so we ate fast and didn't finish our meal. We ask for to go box so I can snack on the French toast at the beach. They gave us two so we packed the pancake as well. Later, we threw it in the trash bcoz we had better food. Honestly they can easily make a sign "Reservations only" and people will just walk away and go to other place. Service was good but we were just uncomfortable. Still tipped them well bcoz I used to be a waitress. Milk and cereal - photo worthy, good to share with 4 people if you want to try. Be aware it's really sweet. Pancake was cooked perfectly. Adobo loco moco - it was alright. A little dry and rice was a little undercooked. French toast - pretty good! Nice thickness and seasoning of cinnamon which wasn't over powering. read more

Food kind of went downhill but be careful cause there is a 4%kitchen appreciation fee cause the boss wants the kitchen staff to feel appreciated. Which is strange cause no one from the kitchen came to me to thank me or tell me I'm the boss. Not sure how legal this is since it wasn't visible anywhere until I saw the bill. We made reservations because this is such a hot spot (I heard the hostess tell a customer the wait was 2 hours). We got seated immediately. It's a cute and appealing to the eye eatery. We came during lunch on a Saturday and it was pretty crowded, almost every table full. My coffee was okay, I ordered a latte with almond milk. We shared crispy Brussels, it came with capers, Parmesan cheese and a shoyu and balsamic sauce. It was really good. I ordered the creole shrimp and grits, which was delicious except I wish the shrimp had no head cuz I kept chewing on the antennas (bleh), it had a nice spice to it, the grits were perfectly cooked and so was the egg. My sister ordered the adobo loco moco which was also yummy. It came with a hearty serving of rice, the adobo was tender and flavorful and the egg was again perfectly cooked. Our total for everything was under $60 so that wasn't bad. Service was good. Food came out super quick which we liked. I'll definitely be back to try another menu items that look/sound SUPER delicious. read more

I'm in love with their kulua pig loco moco! It was sooo flavorful and the portion was perfect. There was a nice amount of rice and meat.

I was really excited to try this place and had pretty high hopes but it's a nope for me. The food just lacked the level of flavor and skilled preparation that makes a restaurant stand out amongst the crowd of pricey hipster joints that have been popping up like pimples on a teenager's face in Kaka'ako and around O'ahu. I'd been dying to try their Taco Tuesday special, which is a total deal at $28, since it comes with a beer, margarita, and a shot of tequila and 3 tacos, a small cob of elote corn, rice, beans and a smear of guacamole. Great price, but my corn was burnt like it just popped out of Hell. Everyone else at the tables corn was burnt too. The beans had no flavor. The taco meat was hard and burnt tasting in the carnitas. The guac didn't taste fresh and it had nothing in it like onion, tomato, cilantro (I think it was fake guac from a tub). The chorizo tostada was good and the steak taco was also good. But it was a lot of misses. My friend ordered the chicken and waffles and the waffle was soggy and overly dressed with maple syrup. The chicken was ok not great. We tried the Brussels sprouts and they were gross. Soaked in oil and burnt. And the tiniest little portion I've ever gotten as a side/ app anywhere. The chef was just burning food that day I guess. Drinks were tiny and overpriced. They use these mini dollhouse goblets to serve cocktails and the beer glasses were tiny like you get in a Japanese restaurant. Last call for food AND drinks was at 8:40, reinforcing my beef with Kaka'ako- everythang closes too dang early in that neighborhood! Especially for a place that markets itself to young people but then runs old fart hours. Pffffft. The 3rd star is solely for the DJ who was playing some lit 90's hip hop while we ate. read more
