This place is soo good. I usually go during lunch and there is not much of a crowd. Everything on the menu is so fresh and the meals are really authentic. Having been to Italy recently, I come here for a taste of what Italy is. The bruschetta is to seriously die for. We started off with a fairly unreasonable wait for a party that called ahead, to a restaurant that was far from full. Our server was attempting to be helpful, but soon seemed to become more overbearing, and occasionally rude. Food took a while to come out in a far from full house setting. The food, I admit, was decent, and would be somewhat reasonable for the price if it wasn't for sneaky little things like charging you $4 for adding a few pieces of spinach into a pasta dish. (A detail not mentioned by our server.) Server grew increasingly less-attentive throughout the meal. By the time everything was ready to be settled, the $4 spinach issue was mentioned to management, which at first, spoke around the issue and left. Shortly thereafter, a new manager came to ask if everything was ok, and the issue was again brought up. His response was a plethora of ridiculous excuses, all the way down to the "high cost" of their Italian spinach. (We dine out at restaurants an average of 10 times a week during lunch and dinner, and have never had such a simple issue meet so much argument and contest.) Furthermore, I can buy an entire bunch of this "imported spinach" from most markets for roughly a dollar. The principle of the matter was simple, there was no mention of an additional charge, and certainly not one so outrageous. (As you know, normal restaurants charge roughly a dollar for add-on's or minor upgrades.) After saying the bill couldn't be changed because it was "against the law", the manager tried to ask if he could do something else to resolve the issue. (He though I had already paid with a credit card, and claimed it was illegal to change the transaction, which we all know is not true. It is done daily in retail outfits everywhere.) Once I explained to him we hadn't paid, and his server had misinformed him, he burst off to the kitchen, then came back apologetic for all the lies his server had told him about our meal and our bill. He then boasted to have "suspended him immediately", which is disturbingly unprofessional. Under normal circumstances, a good manager would respond to a customer by saying: "I truly appreciate you bringing this to my attention. We will have to go through some extensive training exercises with our employee to assure we focus on improving some of their weaker points." Instead, he thought we would find comfort in someone getting suspended from what was likely a sub-par job in the first place, considering the overall performance of the restaurant. To top it all off, this embarrassing fiasco took place over about 25 minutes, and sadly, was during a first-time visit that was arranged for my farther-in-laws birthday. Upon departure we were offered $10 gift certificates, which we promptly returned, having no intentions of ever dining there again. read more

We called ahead on a Friday night to see if we needed to make reservations. The hostess assured us we did not. When we arrived there was a "10 minute wait" that was actually more like 20. As we waited we noticed several empty tables and booths and inquired about their availability. The hostess said they were available but they couldn't seat us there because they don't like to seat people next to tables taken by other people. What? At the end of the meal the server brought us the wrong check, which led to some confusion. That's the bad stuff. The good stuff was everything in between. The food was exceptional and far outweighed the frustrating things at the beginning and end of the experience. Our table of 5 ordered several different things and every bit of it was excellent. The cutlet itself could be eaten just like that it was so delicious. But Scuzzi's goes to work and tops it with some fresh tasting pomodoro sauce. Add some mozzarella cheese to the top and melt it. Mama Mia! This dish was delicious. I like to try Veal Parmesan often and this place ranks right up there with the best of places that I have eaten this classic dish at. Oh yeah, it is served up with a side of spaghetti and your choice of sauce (I went with the classic marinara). What could possibly top the Veal Parmesan? Well how about the Lasagna di Pollo al Forno? This lasagna takes smoked chicken, spinach and various Italian cheeses, then places the mixture in between sheets of pasta. Then topped with a sugarosa sauce and mozzarella cheese. I don't even know what a sugarosa sauce is, but I will bet my Mario Lanza CD collection that it means YUMMY in Italian. The smoked chicken goes perfect with the cheeses and pasta. This dish steals the show. My child had a cheese pizza for her meal and there was enough cheese on this kid-sized pizza to cover one large Papa John's pizza. What else can I say about Scuzzi's? Well, the prices are not cheap, but the food is worth it. The place is right in suburbia but once you get inside, you just might think you are in New York's Little Italy. The exterior of the restaurant looks like a casual Italian place, but the interior of the restaurant felt more formal. The prices felt high and the interior seemed outdated with the polyester table cloths and folded napkins. When we sat down, the waiter brought 2 rolls to the table. We were hungry and ate the bread. Later on in the meal, the waiter asked if we wanted more bread. When we said yes, he made a comment about how much we had eaten. It made both of us feel uncomfortable. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs , it was ok, kind of bland for being so expensive. Two medium size meatballs on pasta with a red sauce. The main problem was that staff was at our table every minute or two. We couldn't even have a normal conversation because they kept coming by and asking if we needed anything. I like attentive service, but the questions and conversations we had with the staff were odd. When we were ready to order, we put down our menus and the waiter came over to ask if we were "just taking a break from the menu." When we weren't talking to the staff, they were hovering around our table like they were waiting for us to need them. We were still actively eating when the waiter came over to ask us if we wanted a box. That led to a bunch more questions about if we wanted him to bring the box now, or in a few minutes, and do we want to share a box or should he bring two etc. When he brought the box, he set up a little station next to our table while he tried to figure out how to put our leftovers in the box. He seemed to struggle with how to close the styrofoam container too. Unremarkable food with an uncomfortable dining experience make this a big thumbs down for me. I won't be going back. read more

This was my very first time here and let me start out by say "WOW!" A buddy of mine took me out for my birthday and we were craving Italian. I wanted to go somewhere I had not been before and this place came up. I tend to be a creature of habit, so this was something new for me. The atmosphere was great, not too crowded at the time I went, and service was fast and very friendly. Our server Matt was outstanding, knowing exactly when to bring everything to the table. Too often when you order a lot of food and drinks it all comes out at once and then the table is just crowded. Not here, not this night. Everything was timed well, food and drinks, and not once did we feel rushed. We arrived around 9 p.m. and they closed at 11 p.m. I was a little concerned that we would have to be out the door soon, but Matt assured us that we were fine. I remember finishing the meal exactly with three minutes till close and Matt came out to clear our plates and asked if we wanted coffee or dessert. I was shocked because most places are ready to push people out the door so they can close up and go home. I swear Matt would have stayed there another hour if necessary to ensure we had a great experience. We said no as we were full, but he still went to the back and brought out a birthday dessert that was out of this world. The cannoli was packed with goodness. Most places I get too much fried pastry and it swells so much you can't fill it properly, but this place was amazing. The food as a whole hit the spot. We ordered their spinach dip that came with amazing fresh baked bread, regular and toasted. My buddy got a pasta dish, I forget the name and I got the chicken medallions with mushroom sauce and to top it off there were layers or prosciutto on it. That was a huge win for me. Everything was top notch here and let me recommend the cucumber martini. I had one and would have gladly gotten another if I was not interesting in trying some of their other cocktails. I ordered a white sangria and a medium spinach salad with grilled chicken and the rude server charged me for a large even though i told him twice while ordering i wanted a medium,when i approached the situation he said "sorry i just assumed you wanted the large i didnt hear you say medium." As a server you really shouldnt assume anything. They forced 20% gratuity without informing me as well and when I asked him to fix the ticket he gave me an attitude and said he would just give me the difference for the salad size. He snidely made a remark saying "it was ONLY a $4 difference" while returning me the $4. (It was a $7 difference,not sure how he got $4 out of that) but I took it anyways. $4 isnt much but its my money? The remark was unnecessary and unprofessional Anyways this was my first experience and none of us were informed about forced gratuity,I've served for 4 years and I know good service when i see it. the customer service was a joke especially coming from people older than I am in the industry. This restaurant is amazing. Well, the hostess kinda sucked. She acted like she was really bored and didn't smile. But,had she been on point I would have died and thought I'd gone to heaven! My hubby and I went for our anniversary and reserved a cozy booth. When you think about someone being a master of their trade you should think of my waiter. He was charming, helpful and was always there when I needed him without being intrusive. He has to be the best server I have ever had. Nor were they cooked to the perfection in the menu photo and did not constitute a 'dinner' per the menu listing. Ditto for the Scuzzi salad; $9 for a medium salad that barely filled a small styrofoam container. Italian dressing was creamy and blah - definitely not homemade. I wandered into Scuzzi's one cold night seeking out a glass of wine while my son was at his martial arts class just down the road. I encountered a comfy, low lit bar with very friendly staff who offered to let me try a few different wines before I made a selection. Now every time I come in, the bartender makes the same offer and likes to introduce me to different wines. They have good happy hour specials which extend later than most and have 1/2 price bottles of wine available as part of the happy hour specials in addition to bruschetta, garlic shrimp and other snacking foods. I ate dinner at the bar one night, having the chicken cannelloni which was served with a sauce that didn't interest me. The bartender said I could sub out any sauce I liked so I went with the green peppercorn. It was rich and delicious and now that I know it's not a hassle to sub out the sauces since dishes are made to order, I feel like I'm in a choose your own pasta adventure book! I have not ventured into the dining room. I always sit at the bar and eat or drink so I can't describe the service or atmosphere there. To sum it all up: stellar service, great happy hour value and decent food. read more

This afternoon was my first time dining at Scuzzi's after years of passing it by. Trying to end spring break (if you can call it that at my age) with a bang, my mother, brother, and I finally gave it a shot, and now we all have a new favorite Italian restaurant. Anyway...service, 5/5. Our waiter Charlie was extremely helpful, and when putting out the fantastic bread and oil, he even gave us his own creation to the olive oil that added balsamic and parmesan cheese (quite delicious). I ordered the Linguine in white clam sauce (which went by a different name that my somewhat low-brow ass didn't feel like pronouncing), and it was scrumptious, the pasta and clams both cooked perfectly. My mother had Eggplant Parmesan, which she said was the best she's had in town (I might add eggplant parm is her favorite food, and she spent 40 years living in and around NYC and places that do it right. Basically, she knows what she's talking about!) This really is the best Italian food I've had in San Antonio, but sadly I don't think I'll be around ALL that often...it's just a bit out of my regular price range! But thats no problem. It'll just make it all the more special when I do end up coming here! P.S: Scrolling through these reviews, I noticed Scuzzi's often makes sure to thank their customers. Have been to place a few times over the year. The happy hour margaritas and wine specials attract a few groups. They also have bottomless mamosas and bloody marys. The atmosphere and nice and classy. Service is where it can be a hit and miss. Sometimes it is great and other times slow. Came here for with a group for multiple birthdays. They were on point with orders. Most ordered the shrimp scuzzi and were happy with their choice. I ordered the chicken gargonzola and it was yummy too. Came with ea side of pasta or I could've ordered vegetables. Pretty good food specials all avg about 7.99 had the shrimp Scuzzi (SUPER good!), calamari (yum), Bruschetta needed work in that it had like 2-3 pieces of tomato per crustinni so basically you ate bread. This review was from a visit in early January of 2009. My fiance, at the time, and I wanted one last romantic dinner before we got married. We were driving along 1604 and stopped in. From the outside this place doesn't look like the best- but inside .... just like Brian said- was beautiful. The color scheme and furniture are masculine and fiery. The chairs are really heavy and besides that bar and tv noise it was nice. When we went there was one other couple in the place. Our waiter was kind of bored. I told the waiter he erred, but we were quite pleased. When we paid the bill, they provided us two complimentary veal parmesan dinners to go! I was shocked and so pleased! I found the manager, and told him that I was very pleased with the veal piccata, and was more pleased with the generous service. I had driven by this restaurant a million times, and when a Groupon popped up, I jumped at the chance to try it. The service was good, but their food was only so-so. There was nothing unique, and I found their decor more exciting than their food. It was not a memorable meal. It's also my understanding that they are attempting to be a more upscale restaurant, yet their flatscreen TVs, mounted atop their bar, completely take away from any chance they may have at accomplishing that feat. Visited Scuzzi's for the first time on Saturday celebrating our 20th anniversary. My husband and I loved every dish we ordered! We wanted to sample several items so we ordered appetizer sizes of the oysters, three cheese ravioli, shrimp Scuzzi's and the scallops. Added a side order of angel hair pasta and it was a perfect meal. We ordered a cocktail before dinner and a glass of wine with dinner and of course tiramisu to finish our meal off. The atmosphere and service were excellent and although we paid a good amount for our celebration I felt it was not overpriced and worth ever penny. Scuzzi's is a restaurant that I convince my husband to bring me to for dinner as often as possible. It's the perfect place for a date night or to go with a group for fun. The service is always wonderful, and the food is great. Some of our favorites are the **shrimp scuzzi**, the calamari, chicken fiorentina, and their snapper. I highly recommend going for their Happy Hours, they have a variety of options throughout the week. We tend to be late night diners on Friday/Saturday and they do reverse Happy Hour from 9-11 at the bar and patio! Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Reservation at 6:45 on valentines night and was skipped over many times before I noticed and informed the middle school age hostess that initially checked us in. Finally got in at 7:45. The bread brought to our table was raw dough in the middle and disgusting. I then ordered a bowl of wedding soup and it was obvious that no one put any care or effort into making it. It was if they had ran out at some point and threw together some ingredients that would be passable for soup. Literally tastes like a big bowl of water with three small meatballs some chicken skin, and some undercooked spinach thrown on top. There was not even any salt, pepper, or garlic added to the broth. I ordered there Carbonaro and was disappointed. I have made authentic carbonaro many times and had it made by some great chefs. The dish was swimming in a very thick flavorless cream sauce. It is supposed to be splashed with a very small amount of cream not swimming in it. It was almost like a bad version of fettuccine alfredo without flavor. I can eat just about anything if I have to but this no not edible. I have sent food back only two other times in my entire life but I told the waiter that I could not eat it and to bring me a spinach salad which was good. My wife had a rigatoni in a red sauce which I ate half of because I was still hungry. It was very good as well. I also have to say that our waiter was very nice and accommodating. As was the young male hostess who accommodated us after we had been skipped over. I have eaten here twice before and it was very good both times. I am giving a 4 star rating because I know that they can do better. The problem is that they are too unorganized in the front and the back of the house for a way above average busy valentines holiday night. I am writing this in the hope that the head chef will see this and take the time and training needed to organize all areas for the next holiday night. read more
