tl;dr: it's pretty expensive and the food is just ok In Denver for a work trip and meeting up with a friend last minute but didn't have a reservation anywhere. Everywhere in the area was pretty crowded but we were able to get in here and the menu looked interesting Empanadas: GREAT. The bbq chicken really stood out in the flaky crust. Weird story though - there were 3 of us and the server warned us they come in servings of two. We said it was fine and we would split one of them. To our surprise, he came out with 3 saying that they cooked an extra by accident so they gave it to us. Then again to our surprise, they charged us for the 3rd... $21 for 3 empanadas. Milanesa: good. The pork was tender and the breading flavorful. Its a large serving but definitely wasn't worth $35. Saltado veggies: kinda weird. I've been running past this restaurant for the past several months and it is always packed! (Even at 4/430 every afternoon). Highly recommend coming here for happy hour as almost all of their foods are discounted and their drinks are too! We came here for dinner and had a nice spread of different foods. My favorites were definitely the coconut rice, which paired well with the chicken dish we had. Our friend had the steak plate with chimichurri sauce and that paired well with the coconut rice too! Highly recommend getting the patatas as well! They're very filling and I loved the cheese sauce they had drizzled on top. Well, this place has a really nice vibe and it's cute inside, though tables are a little crowded together. Now the food: I was really disappointed by the shrimp and octopus ceviche: very small amount probably 2 ounces for $18, shrimp was over cooked and the sauce was nothing impressive. Just skip this one. Also got the MahiMahi which was perfectly cooked, tasty coconut sauce with it and some fried cassava root. Just great. The broccoli and potatoes appetizer was also good, although a little oily for my taste. Dessert was passion fruit flan, and while the flan itself was really tasty in its syrup, the addition of granola took away from its taste instead of adding to it. The food: overpriced for what you you get. The real reason for the 1 star is when you get the bill your told that a 20% service charge is automatically added but you could add an additional amount. Señor Bear! I found it online while browsing about the hottest spots in Denver. Loved the name, and had pretty good reviews so decided to give it a try! Why not? Definitely a good choice! Was not disappointed. I ordered Asado de Res which is a wood grilled steak topped with chimichurri and a side of Arroz con coco which in short is coconut rice. My choice definitely did not disappoint. The meat was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The rice was very flavorful and made a good side with the beef. A friend of mine ordered the jerk pollo, and it was a great portion. Half of chicken basically. The chicken itself was pretty moist, and full of flavor. For desert we ordered their churros- and believe me, it's a must! So good. It's all about the sauce- vanilla lime sugar in brown butter puddin! Yumm.. Service was amazing! Very attentive, friendly, and they were very good at recommending items. The place also followed a strict Covid protocol. YES!! My husband and I went for happy hour and not only was our server so freaking cool and clearly an expert waiter, but EVERYTHING was so good. I had a frozen swirly cocktail that blew my mind. I drank two. And they were only $6 each! My husband had two margaritas and really enjoyed them as well. For happy hour food we had the empanada (fresh, crispy, and tasty), the ceviche tostada (tuna for the fish...but still very good), and the guacamole which was topped with chopped pistachio, who knew how good that could be!? I met with a vendor for happy hour this week and had a great time. The staff was all really friendly and attentive. I ordered the Cuba Libre for my drink and it was delish. We ordered the queso, guacamole and chicharrones. I don't eat pork so sampled the guacamole and queso and wow, both incredible. The guacamole was one of the best ones I've ever had and the chips were light and crisp. I absolutely want to come back and sample more of the menu. read more

Señor Bear in Denver had an amazing tapas menu. We ordered tapas as they're meant to be eaten: with good company and great wine. The asado de res was particularly memorable for its tenderness and the chimichurri that knocked it out of the park. Ruch, herbaceous, flavorful. Complemented the steak's juicy texture and added cool notes. Elote was good, smothered. Personally I'm not a huge fan of corn on the cob, but I'd love to see these flavors applied in a less traditional way, considering the fancier aspects of the restaurant. The ceviche was heavy on the citrus aspect, but I'm finding it's like that most places. The accent of jalapeño, parsley, and crema gave this dish the heat, coolness, and herbaceousness it needed to round it out. My second favorite dish was the tomato escabeche. Pickled eggplant (one of the best ways to prepare eggplant in my opinion) and fresh tomato, fried up together was crispy, crunchy, and juicy in one bite. Potatoes were a little heavy for me, and didn't have as much variety that I usually look for, but still pleasant. Last but not least -- the service. Everyone followed protocol for COVID safety standards. Our server was kind, friendly, and convivial when she came by. It only added to the positive experience. If I end up in Denver again, I'd go back and try their other dishes, but probably still get my two favorites again, the asado de res and tomato escabeche. read more

It's important to support local shops large and small during Covid, and it's a good opportunity to try something new, but maybe a little more info on the menu would help alleviate disappointment -- even if that info details just how much you aren't getting! We tried Mr Oso takeout on a Tuesday. We try not to use doordash or uber eats, to ensure the restaurant gets all the money, so there was initial confusion when the basic menu wasn't the same as carryout, and you had to use a doordash link to see the carryout offerings. Not a big deal, just a thought. The house salad was amazing! Large enough to share, with lots of variety and flavor. The Asada de res, steak with chimichurri, was a tad overcooked, and disappointingly stark. Granted, it didn't mention you'd be getting anything other than what it said on the menu, but maybe a tortilla or ... Nope, a single piece of overcooked meat, but with delicious chimichurri on the side. Less than optimal. I wouldn't order again. The bbq chicken empanadas were amazing! The pastry was crispy, flaky and delicious. That type of quality can be hard to achieve with carryout, but this was great! The bbq flavor is delicate, not goopy or overwhelming. I would absolutely get these again. Summer bean escabeche? Not sure what this was supposed to be like, I'd never had such a thing before and here, the description was quite enticing, so we gave it a try. Nope. Cold, thick, less-than-flavorful. I wouldn't order that again. Overall, worth a second try. Some elements are a little expensive, but ordering only what I now know is delicious, I'd do it. read more

I was completely blown away by Senor Bear. This restaurant has quickly and seamlessly jumped to the top of my list for favorite restaurants in Denver. I rarely give out a 5 star review, but this place didn't have a single flaw in my eyes. The ambiance created a relaxed dining experience, which is enhanced by their kind and attentive waitstaff. I love their family style approach to meals, which means you get to try a handful of their delicious offerings. Their meat heavy dishes, such as the Asada Steak and Crispy Pork Tail, were packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. The Crispy Pork Tail was incredibly tender and savory. The chimichurri and roasted garlic were perfect compliments to the Asada Steak. I also agree with many other reviews and strongly recommend getting the Coconut Rice, which was a great side for the meat and veggie entrees. The veggie friendly dishes, such as the Brócoli Saltado, Bean Guiso, and Viandas Asadas were well crafted dishes that would satisfy meat eaters and vegetarians alike. I know you will be stuffed after getting all of this, but you must try their soft serve ice cream and churros as a perfect way to finish the meal. Totaling $135 with tip and tax... and I was still hungry afterwards. House salad: very tasty dressing on it. I wasn't a fan of the nuts or the mandarin oranges but the rest was tasty. Def an appetizer. Ceviche: super tiny bowl. The fish and avocado were on point. Wasn't a fan of the nuts and some other circular hard thing. Dont waste your money on the bear box. 4 of us went and did it (everyone at the table has to agree), we got 4 appetizers- 2 salads, the empanadas, and another dish that wasn't good. We only got 2 (yes 2!) entrees (for 4 people!!!) 3 sides, and 3 desserts. A 20% gratuity was automatically added, bill was $268ish (we only drank water). Our server never asked how anything was. I had to stop her to ask why we only received 2 entrees, the response was "you only get 1 protein per 2 people". So basically it's cheaper to order separately and you get what you want!!! Before ordering, we asked if we would have a variety of food as we had dietary restrictions. She made it sound like we would be getting several dishes for our entrees and have more than enough food. I made sure to ask if there would be enough food as we had 2 guys with us and she reassured us that we would have no issue. She even said she asked her coworkers and they also agreed. I'm sorry but 2 entrees for almost $300 is awful. When dessert came, 2 of which were ice cream. We were expected to all eat of it together. Uhm, are we forgetting it's Covid?? We don't eat after each other nor should we, Covid or not. I had to ask for plates but we did not get extra spoons to split things up. Some of the food was ok, others not so much. The place is super small, so reservations are a must if you want a table but we were able to find some space by the bar for a bite and drink. We ordered house red wine, not bad for the price! For snacks we got the mini queso and added chorizo, it came with so many tostadas we were shocked at the amount for the price. Really delicious too. We also got the hamachi tostada, I looovvvee hamachi tostadas and I'd say this was was pretty fishy. Maybe we just got a bad batch.. We also ordered the gordito taco and it was so good! Everything else had a ridiculous spin on "traditional" Where's the chips and salsa or guacamole? I would consider it Latin inspired but the drinks however...absolutely delicious. Neat little find for brunch on Sunday. Although it was busy there was ample room at the bar. The music was loud and the crowd was talking over it so attempting to have a conversation with the bartender or someone you are with was complicated. The service was fast and the michelada was tasty! It comes with a side a tequila and be warned is very spicy! We ordered the brócoli saltado and bean guiso. They came out at different times so one person was done before the other. The food was so tasty! The brócoli was a mix of Asian and Latin which is an odd combination but it worked! Perfectly cooked fries and good spice! The bean guiso was different but a delightful breakfast. The dumplings had a unique flavor that contrasted to the beans. They also had homemade hot sauce with habenaro cilantro in cute little bears. I haven't tried the drinks yet, but will be coming back for happy hour shortly and will update my review accordingly. For 3 people with large appetites, our entire bill was about $130 after tax and 20% tip, which I found extremely reasonable for the quality of the food. The Skinny: Delicious latin inspired unique dishes Atmosphere: nice outdoor seating space and indoor spot. Came here for brunch and a weekday dinner and haven't had to wait long, but I can see it getting a bit busy during peak times. They are 'dog friendly' on the patio but you have to keep your dog on the outside. Not a big deal but just note that you may have to sit in the sun/further from your dog depending on how packed it is. Food: Really great dishes. Unique flavors that all blend together really well. We've had a variety of brunch and dinner dishes and have been impressed. They call themselves latin inspired tapas - but overall the portions are actually pretty decent. They recommend you get a few per person, but honestly I'd go on the lighter side and order more if you are still hungry - they are much larger than your traditional tapas. We were okay with both brunch and dinner with us each having a dish (and an extra side just because we wanted to try more). Would recommend ribs and grits for brunch (melt in your mouth ribs and creamy grits) & for dinner crispy pig tail (crispy pig ear on top of melty meat), coconut spare ribs (I'm trying to find another way of saying melt in your mouth but can't - all the meats were just amazing. Bonus they have whole melted garlic on the side which was a great addition), and a side of coconut rice (let it sit in the pan for a little so the bottom gets crispy - so good!) Service: Friendly knowledgable staff. Price/value: $$-$$$ Can be a bit expensive for some of the dishes if you order a few tapas style as they recommended. My recent experience at senor bear was for brunch recently. I had the broccoli saltado which is a twist on the Peruvian dish lomo/pollo saltado made vegetarian. I loved the aji sauce and brought me back to Peru :) the flavor was a Latin Asian fusion. The mole was fabulous. I loved it. The albacore tuna was fresh and had the perfect amount of tang. The pig tail was melt in your mouth. The pickled veggies went so well with the rich protein. YUM. The churros were the best I think I've ever had. Crispy but chewy. The brown butter sauce was so glorious. Caramel-y and sweet and the perfect consistency to cling to the churro. Open during any/all weather. If you make a reservation to dine outside, the temperature will not matter. My husband made a reservation + put down a deposit to dine at Senor Bear a few Saturdays ago. When we made the plans, the weather wasn't looking too bad. By Saturday, it was 10 degrees (probably less with the windchill) and snowing. That doesn't seem safe to make people eat on the patio, right? Apparently in Senor Bear country, the patio is perfectly fine. It's heated and mostly covered, after all. It was freezing! Even with the heaters. Luckily we brought hand warmers and I chugged two glasses of vino to stay warm. The food itself was good (I've eaten here before, it's great), but the weather was just too damn cold to enjoy. We had a few small plates and got the hell out of there. Short rib sticky rice is a banana leaf of tender meat over a bed of rice that soaked up all the fatty meaty marinate. Then came the pork shank. This soft tender goodness sits in a bed of mashed potato, complimented with creamy sauce that tasted perfectly complicated. I came here for brunch with a girlfriend. The place itself was no bigger than a coffee shop, with lots of plants. The problem with this is that there were so many gnats flying around and two died in out drinks. This is my only complaint about the place, but everything else was perfect. We both got the coffee, which is unlimited. It was a good strong coffee and the servers refilled accordingly. Their presentation was amazing and every dish was IG worthy. You can see the amount of care and pride that goes into every dish. I had the sausage hash, which was super delicious. Every bite was perfectly balanced and savory. From the outside looking in during the night, I'm not sure there is a cooler spot in Denver. It's something you'd see in a magazine. The inside is sort of an L shaped. I feel like if you are at or near the bar you have a pretty good social ambiance. We were seated in the area right of bar, which was much quieter and more for dates or private conversations. We have been excited to check out this place for a while and finally made it. It was disappointing to find out the happy hour at the bar goes until 6PM but where we were it was only until 5PM. I don't think that's super cool. Who does that? We started with the coconut rice and the cauliflower appetizers - both were fantastic. We couldn't wait for the entrees to come out. My wife got the mofondo and didn't like it at all. I ended up eating it. It was fine but probably not something I would get again. Against my better judgement, I went with the Jerk Chicken. Okay, before I get into the dish just know that on my Yelp profile this is listed as the last meal I'd have before I die. With that said, this wasn't even close to jerk chicken. Anyone who has had the real deal knows that it oozes with flavor and it's so good you can't seem to get enough. This version had spices on the outside but once you get past the skin it was just bland chicken. Juicy but bland. My wife said it first and I was thinking it probably trying to convince myself this wasn't the case. IMHO, major fail. As for the waitstaff, everyone was polite and the service was quick. Depending on how you look at it, our waiter was either pushy or helpful. For the amount we paid for the entrees, it's really a rip off to think no sides come with it. There is really no other way to say this. On top of everything with, with two drinks, the bill ended up being so high that I had buyer's remorse in the end. I could have dropped this kind of money at a place where I knew the food was going to wow me and leave me thinking about it for days.
