I really have enjoyed Señor Bear. I have visited a few things for happy hour and have throughly enjoyed myself each time! You can get a Mezcal marg for like $6! Ummm yea sign me up! Haha I've tried a few of their apps as well and they have all be flavorful and delicious. The bartender also made us a special cocktail that was similar to an old fashioned but with Mezcal and that was quite delicious! The ambiance is super cute. Very bright with some pretty plants. And the best part they play Reggaeton as background music. I will be back! read more

Amazing food served by amazing people! If the staff didn't win me over with their hospitality and attentiveness than the food 100% will. My recommendation would be to either sit outside and enjoy the day or sit inside at the bar. The bar tenders are super friendly and willing to help you with anything. Definitely a pricier option, but if you have the money I'd definitely check this place out. DRINKS: They have a wide array of mezcal to taste, but we opted for the conhelado. It's essentially a slush drink that they rotate. We had a spicy froze type drink, and as weird as it sounds I loved it. I would definitely come back and try whatever conhelado they had rotating. If you're hesitant they'll offer you a tiny sampler to win you over. FOOD: For some reason I came here expecting tacos, and I was gladly wrong. The food here is definitely elevated and delicious. I would definitely recommend splitting a couple of dishes so you can try a variety of food. You can also get the Chef's Tasting, but I'm not sure you get a say in what you're getting. Crispy Pork - If you choose to ignore everything I'm writing at least listen to his piece of advice and get the Crispy Pork! It's beyond delicious. The flavors are all there and the sauce goes perfectly with it. You get a nice crunchy texture with the melt in your mouth pork. Your biggest regret will be sharing this with your friend/date. Chicken Liver Pate - Nothing spectacular. It's definitely different from any pate I've ever had. It comes with dates and chilis. I've never had spicy pate before, but to me it dominates the pate flavors. Coconut Spare Ribs - The meat was cooked perfectly. The rib had a lot of flavors complemented by the coconut flakes on the outside. Sweet Corn Soft Serve - This isn't always on the menu, but if it is GET IT. It's definitely a unique dish worth a try. The sweet corn isn't a super dominating flavor. They also add a chocolate drizzle to it. With the chocolate the soft serve tastes more like vanilla, but without you can definitely get the sweet corn flavors. The caramel popcorn adds a great crunch and flavor. It's a large portion that tastes great. Great atmosphere, food and drinks. A little on the pricier side, but well worth the try! read more

I stopped in recently with my best friend - it was my first meal in Denver after being away for half a year. I read some praise and figured it would be delectable as its sister restaurant, Bar Dough. Unfortunately, the visit was lackluster, and I may only return to give brunch a go. The main reason my experience did not resonate was something I see a lot in this Denver food scene: a total identity crisis. The menu, service, decor and beverage program don't all run on the same theme. When seated, we were given a Tiki Tuesday menu - the bar was preparing tiki drinks for the night, a trend in cocktails but how does this match a Latin American menu and concept? From there, I had a feeling things would be clunky. Our service was fine, but uneasy and not overly hospitable. The atmosphere was odd, and it reminded me too much of the doomed space of previous tenant, Jezebel. The hanging plants in the pergola over the bar looked odd, and the plants lining the south window were placed in such a way, it reminded me of grandma's sun room. There were elements of design that were nice, but it all was trying too hard to be something...something other than Latin. The food was the biggest miss for us. We ordered three items to share (it's all small plates, another trend in town) and we kept a menu to order more as we went. That never happened. The menu is Latin inspired for sure, but there is no focus. I never saw a common theme, and I found it muddled and confusing. We went with a safe dish: The empanadas. They had a Latin look, but they tasted of classic Americana, no thanks to the overly sweet barbecue chicken inside. A lime wedge and avocado crema accompanied them but did nothing for my taste buds. Second dish: broccoli. This dish boggled my mind and needed editing. The broccoli was stir fried Asian style with mushrooms. It was a salty "beef with broccoli" flavor with mushrooms, which on its own wasn't bad, but it was topped with fries and aioli and meant to be stuffed in chived crepes. So, Asian + French = Latin? The crepes were soggy and fell apart when you added the broccoli mound. The crepes were flavorless and strange. Third: short ribs with coconut. Skip this dish. Don't do it. The ribs were so overly boiled, they were limp and crumbled when you tried to serve yourself a helping. So over boiled, the bones inside turned brittle. My guest was fishing bones out of his mouth before he gave up on the dish altogether. The sauce on the ribs was a total mystery in flavor, portion and meaning. For me, Senor Bear is a miss. And a disappointment. Next time, I'm sticking with Bar Dough. read more

This place used to have the best happy hour menu. For no reason, they've gone and changed up the menu for the worse AND raised the prices. I tried to give this feedback to a few different bartenders who work there but I don't think they believe me or they don't get it. The crunchy taco used to be amazing, but now it's dripping with oil, disgusting and they removed the guacamole. Seafood tostada used to be fantastic as well but now it has some weird sauce on it, like thousand Island mayo sauce, gross. Since I tried to give them polite feedback as a regular customer of some years in person and they don't seem to take it seriously, I've had to resort to giving them a one star here in hopes that someone will read this and talk to the chef. To worsen the menu and raise prices is a bad combination... Bring back the original recipe of the crunchy taco please!!! read more

As a pescetarian, I tend to judge restaurants by the quality of their veggie options. Typically, a restaurant that brings creativity and interest to their veg dishes is operating at a high level across the menu. That is certainly true here - really nice combinations of elements and flavors. The broccoli dish was quite good, and the squash, mole, burrata dish was very much appreciated - love the flavor of mole but rare to find it in a vegetarian main. Enjoyed the coconut pudding. Overall, a very nice addition to the neighborhood, refined and innovative without breaking the bank. Wine list was well considered, though will have to return for a cocktail. read more

The ambience and food are great, but the portions leave a lot to be desired for the price. It's pretty disappointing because with a few simple fixes, this place would be amazing. My wife and I ended up ordering the tuna ceviche, guiso stew, passionfruit drink, and luna de sangre cocktail. The tuna was great, but only came with three small chips to put the tuna on. The bean stew also had good flavor, but it was $15 for what is essentially a small bowl of beans, one egg, and ricotta cheese. And it's so frustrating that it didn't come with bread! Any Hispanic will tell you that you need tortillas or bread to soak up all that good broth at the end of your soup/stew dish. The cocktails are some of the smallest I've ever received, and they are all $10+. Our drinks were served in an 8 oz highball glass filled to the brim with crushed ice, essentially leaving about 3 oz of actual liquid. My cocktail wasn't particularly strong either. It felt like a ripoff. I recall looking at the menu and seeing a broccoli and mushroom sharing plate for $22. Don't expect to leave here full unless you're willing to drop ~$75/person. It would be more appropriate for this restaurant to have three dollar signs in the description. Also - their happy hour only goes until 5. They should consider extending that to 6, since that's pretty much the norm everywhere else. read more

Had an amazing dinner with a group of four that allowed us to try a ton of dishes. We went a little overboard ordering 8 dishes, but it's hard to control yourself when everything sounds so delicious. Turns out everything was as good as we thought. We had the Saltado, steak with chimichurri, crispy pig tail (my favorite), Patatas , mole, heirloom bean stew, mofongo, and a Peruvian lamb skewer (other favorite, but a rotating special) along with the churros for dessert. Best churros I've ever had. Hands down. Wow. I promise you will not regret them. Crunchy outside and doughy middle. I also recommend the Kale & Brussel Sprout Ensalada. This salad is probably a top three salad of all time. There is a perfect balance of sweet and savory. Both my friend and I loved it. We ordered what they call the "picnic basket" where the chef picks your three-course meal. It was just two of us and I will admit I took home a lot of leftovers. If there was three or four of you, perfect. Our service was phenomenal. We didn't have a reservation but the hostess took our names and found us as soon as a spot opened. My god, their churros may be the best thing I've ever eaten. I swear up and down, they are to die for. If you go for only that, it is worth the trip. The drinks were fantastic; I had a pisco sour that was delightful. Went with a large group and everyone was pleased with their drinks and selection. The staff were so great and helpful! We know how much of pain large parties can be, but the Senor Bear staff were patient and attentive for a Friday night. I highly recommend checking this place out. read more

This new restaurant left SO much to be desired. We were really excited to try it, and our whole table left underwhelmed and hungry (for a pretty penny.) The interior is beautiful and very well done; I wish the food followed suit. We waited an hour for very expensive tapas. The queso with chorizo is something crazy like $17 and it MAYBE fed for 2-3 people as a starter. The chicken entree came out looking like exactly something I cook at home - there was NOTHING interesting or special about it - we were shocked. I could go on and on about everything we ate. A lot of was decent and had nice flavor, but the portion and price was completely out of whack. There is a new restaurant in Denver/Boulder opening every week/month and only the strong survive. The good and the bad. A nice addition to the Highland dining scene but not without it's shortcomings. The cocktail menu, while interesting, is a little one dimensional being focused pretty much solely on rum, tequila and pisco. Both of the bocadillos - the Mezcla de Fiesta and the Queso Fundido were great (the Queso is a 'can't miss' item). The Agua Chile was a fail - basically scallop flavored guacamole that came across as too rich. I think serving it with toast point or tortilla chips could help even out the taste and texture. The Albacore Tuna Ceviche was 'ok' -nothing special and a fairly straightforward ceviche. Nothing special. The Crispy Pig Tail was one of the better entrees on the menu. While a little heavy on lime in the slaw, the pork was well seasoned and glazed and very tasty. Portion size versus price may be a little high but not too far out of line for the Highland dining scene. The Guiso stew was one of the other absolute high points and definitely on point. I would come back for the Queso and the Guiso alone which is a big win for any of vegetarians out there. All in all I'd say Señor Bear is worth a look especially if you're looking for something a little different then the standard Lo-Hi food scene. Five stars across the board! My friend and I came here for a casual happy hour and it was everything but! This is not your average bar, service or food! The Paloma and #Spritzface were masterfully crafted and delicious. The chicken empanadas had the perfect amount of chicken and crunch ratio (which is a must with any empanada). I had never had a gordita outside of Taco Bell and apparently I had been missing out! Hard shell, cheese, soft shell, cheese, chorizo, cheese...cheese...cheese! We had basic drinks (wine, beer) because all the cocktails didn't excite me but they looked pretty creative. Side note: I'm not a big fancy drink girl. We had the shrimp octopus ceviche but was told it was precooked and it did taste like it. The flavors were good but no where near the $22 it costs...maybe $12 at best for the few slices of sweet potato and little bits of seafood. Wow what a great dining experience. Just opened two days in the old Jezebel local (Squeaky Bean before that) it was flawless. Parking is bad in the heart of the Highlands so grab one if you see one. We sat outside on the winding patio, so you get to see the life on Tejon. Started with two apps queso with four tostada shells. Then had a corn/peanut/cashews that was grilled. He had the frozen drink of the day.. pomegranate and I had the frasca of the day... mango both excellent. This place is a share dish concept..we split the half chicken (gigantic) it comes with homemade tortillas/creama/lime/lettuce/chili.... delicious. We also split king crab on avocado. So refreshing served cold on a hot night. Desserts we had churros and also grilled pineapple on rice pudding. Team tag service. Great service. Do I need to say more. read more

Seriously, you will not be disappointed, they are so incredibly good and the brown butter sauce that accompanies the dish is incredible and really takes the churros to the next level. The drinks were overpriced for the quality and quantity so if you aren't a big drinker I would probably skip the alcohol. The veal carnitas while they say are a two person dish are really only for one person (two if you're a good sharer). I would go back solely for the churros though. A definite must try! read more

Solid. My friend and I came here for dinner and split 4 plates, 2 desserts, had 3 cocktails each, and left full and happy (and slightly tipsy). The bill was $75 each and it felt well worth it. We decided to pick one item from each section of the menu and went with the queso fundido, tuna ceviche, tomato neopolitan, and crispy pig tail. Aside from the tomato plate being slightly oily, everything was delicious. Though I try really hard not to eat pork, I give in on occasion. It was worth it this time. The pork, complemented by a sticky, sweet and savory tamarind sauce, was cooked to perfection. The dish was a proper serving for two to share - enough to make 4 tacos. It also came with a tasty citrus cabbage/jicama slaw and crispy pig ears. They really nailed the balance of flavors and textures on this plate. The cocktails were stiff and well balanced. I went with the El Capitan, Pisco Sour, and ended the night with the daquiri. The El Capitan is a great way to start the evening. It's a nice palate cleanser but definitely not for the faint of heart. As for the pisco sour, I'm a sucker for any drink shaken with an egg white :) The daquiri was a bit cloying but otherwise a good way to end the night. I might ask them to hold back a bit on the simple syrup. Because the two of us couldn't decide, we ordered both the churros and the coconut ice cream. Decided to check out one of Denver's new restaurants. Señor Bear is in the old Jezebel's place, across from Old Major the inside was cute and there's a decent patio. We started with the Queso Fundido without chorizo. It was good and I'd order that again. The tuna ceviche was decent. The fish was excellent, but it was too heavily flavored in lemon. That's all I could taste. Finally, we shared the half chicken and made tacos out of them. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Salsa was super spicy, so beware. I think this place will do well. I've driven by this place a handful of times and always wanted to try it. Finally we did! It was good but not amazing! I'll definitely be back though. The grilled steak was sooo good! Just a little bit of salt that made it! We also got the salad which was alright , the empanadas were probably one of my favorites as well as El Pollo Bronco. We also did the Ceviche and I would have just stayed with that as a starter instead of the Salad. There were four of us and the five things we got seemed to be enough. A little pricey was it was good. Be aware of the Bear sauce with the Pollo Bronco. It looks cute but ok so dangerously hot!! read more

We stopped into Senor Bear for Happy Hour after hearing all the hype about the restaurant. We tried 4 items on the HH menu which were all very tasty (Gordo Crunch, Seafood Tostada, Empanada, and Mini Queso). Reason for the 3 star review is due to three service issues that were not handled well. 1st issues was after we ordered the Mini Queso with our main order. We had to re-ask for the dish 2x before it was finally served almost 30-min after ordering. The server did take it off the tab, but it was like pulling teeth just to try this dish. 2nd Service error was when we had all of our food delivered and our drinks were clearly empty (Mind you that we were sitting at the bar). Instead of asking if we wanted refills we had to flag down our bartender and ask for another round. Now came the fun part.... almost 20-min later our drinks arrived! We were at the bar, but it was like the bartender was overwhelmed and ignoring us. Not cool. 3rd was when we decided to try a few of their XXX Confit Wings and one of them was still raw inside. This was a mistake, but apologize and send a manager over for serving raw chicken, don't just saw 'we'll take that off the bill too.' All-in-all, we loved the drinks (when we could get them) and the cooked food we ate was very tasty, but it seems like this restaurant is still working through several service and kitchen errors. Headed into Señor Bear last night with a friend for HH. Unfortunately, we started on a bit of a downer. Their newly launched HH is from 3p-5p (say what??), and after arriving at just a few minutes after 5pm, we missed it. Not only does their website still say that they open at 5pm, so does Yelp, and Facebook. How is anyone to know that HH starts at 3p and ends at 5p, unlike any other restaurant/bar in town? They do however, have their HH added to the hours posted on their front door, but is that really the best way to reach the majority of customers in 2017? Perhaps not... We took a seat on the patio, which is great for people watching and has plenty of seating. The music out here though is WAY too loud. Having conversation was difficult. Sam was our server for the evening and was friendly, knowledgable, and attentive. Five stars, Sam! After bringing us samples of the special drink for the night (some sort of blended margarita), we ordered some wine to start with. Despite the wine list being limited, there are still interesting choices here, and the rest of the cocktail menu looked tasty! I'm just a wine gal, ya know?! We had wanted small plates (hence the desire to go in for HH), but were forced to split a couple of items off the regular menu. We settled for the Queso Fundido with chorizo, and the Zucchini Blossom Quesadilla. First, the Queso: underwhelming, and very greasy. The cheese had good flavor, but the rest was bland. While it came with chopped peppers (poblanos?) on top and some jicama (*that* was yummy and provided a nice refreshing crunch), it needed spice badly. Also, it was just way too greasy, with oil literally pooling in the corners. The Quesadilla came out with some of the prettiest food presentation I've seen in awhile. I almost felt bad eating it! It was okay. The cheese blend was good, but there was nothing special about it past the presentation. For this and 2 glasses of wine apiece, the tab was $75 before tip. There's nothing bad about Señor Bear, but not it's not anything amazing either in a neighborhood that is still quite the foodie paradise. Juan Padro, the visionary behind Denver Highland Tap & Burger, Bar Dough, and Sloan's Lake Tap & Burger, has done it again: Señor Bear is near perfection. From the ceviche to the carnitas to the queso fundido, everything we tried was amazing. Normally, when we go to restaurants this young, they're still working out the kinks - especially when it comes to the service. Not at Señor Bear. Every last detail was accounted for. And our server, Chanelle, was at the top of her game, never leaving us wanting for a single thing. The menu was elegantly simple, the food divine, and the service superb. If I had to complain (and I'm not), I wish I could afford to eat there more often. The tab, at the end of the night, was around $100 before tip, but, hey, you get what you pay for. If you're looking for more of a burger and fries place, this ain't it. But Mr. Padro can accommodate you with his other restaurant, Highland Tap & Burger, which is just up the street and has some of the best burgers in town. If you're into a wide selection of tap beer. you won't find that at Señor Bear (bottles and cans only), but they're cocktail program is off the charts, offering an amazing selection of rum, tequila, and pisco, yes picsco concoctions. Denver's food scene is really jumping off. It's great to see that Señor Bear has joined a long list of great restaurants in Denver. read more
