Came here on a Friday night with a girlfriend. We had made reservations for 6 PM and unfortunately we were running late. We ended up getting there past 6:30 but they were kind enough to, seat us right away since they were not busy. The place is small so I highly recommend getting a reservation because by 7 PM it was packed! The place itself was decorated really well and I loved that that it was one big round bar table with the sushi being made right in front of you/in the middle by the chiefs. The spicy tuna roll was great and I highly recommend! The albacore hand roll was very good and a great option if you don't want a spicy or citrusy roll. Fried shishito peppers with spicy tuna is a must for an appetizer I highly recommended! The only disappoint was that the yellowtail hand roll was overly salty. Overall the quality of fish was great! Also, the waiter also seemed to rush us a bit to order things more quickly. But given we were late and it was a Friday night I can't take that too much to heart. We made a last minute reservation and the counter seating was spacious and comfortable enough. Glad the menu had a lot to offer in addition to hand rolls. Hubby and I are not big fans of hand rolls so we needed more items to try. We had toro, bluefin, ankimo and mackerel nigiri sushi, whole uni, wild mushroom soups, spicy tuna rice cakes, salmon skin hand rolls and baked snow crab hand roll. Also loved the hand rolls. My server recommended the albacore, and it was spot on. So here is what surprised me in a not so good way. When I got the bill, I was charged an 18% dine in service charge. What the heck is that. On top of that, I am supposed to pay a tip as well. The food is great. I was having a hard time finding enough menu items I would want to order. The food was good, sake was great, but the dessert was awful, I can't believe they serve it. Their crepe cake dessert was so great, I'm surprised it's not longer on the menu. Service used to be amazing here, not sure what happened. Love how fresh all of the fish is here! I do wish they had actual rolls you could order when you dine in. More importantly, I have a soy sauce allergy (most places have zero problem accommodating this), but a lot of the stuff here was premixed and so I couldn't try a lot of the menu items. Everything tasted great but this place is a little pricier than other handroll and sushi places I've been to imo, so keep that in mind. From the moment we walked in and were greeted to the moment we walked out, we truly were treated like a king and queen! We wanted to try a new spot for our 7 year wedding anniversary and decided to drive here from Covina. It's always a risk when you try a new spot, but from the very first dishes that hit our table we knew we made the right decision. The mushroom soup was unlike anything we tried before. The tuna salad was fresh and delicious! It was so good that we forgot to take pics of all the items we ate. Every single handroll was SO good and better than any of the other handroll places out there. (Not just saying this, but try this place out and you'll see what I mean). We decided to be adventurous and try the Whole Fried NZ Snapper and we were glad that we did! Between the fish melting off the bone and the homemade sauce that was full of spicy/sweet flavors this dish not only came together beautifully but it was also beautiful to see. I need to give a shoutout to Amanda and Valentine who were both helping take care of us, and they both truly went above and beyond! We were guided through the menu and given recommendations and we are glad we trusted them. Though delicious, the dishes were not easily sharable for a party of three. I was also apprehensive about the 18% service fee note on the menu; however, the final check says the 18% is gratuity. 3.5 stars for the food, price, vibes, and service. The 18% gratuity sucks, but at least it's printed clearly on the menu. My bf and I came here on a Saturday at 6:30pm before dinner rush. The house music was energetic, but not like rager anthems. It made me feel young again~ Service was excellent, from check ins to plate clearing and explaining of omakase dishes. There are bag hooks under the bar. (Note that the entire place is all bar seating.) The chef timed my 4-course a la carte order perfectly with my bf's 8-course omakase ($100). It felt like a cohesive dining experience. We shared a bottle of Kubota Senjyu sake ($45 - 720 ml). The price was reasonable, and the bottle remained cold as it was served in an ice bucket. The sake was smooth with caramel notes (I didn't taste the cocoa). FOOD ORDERED The sushi rice was chewy, but wet, so it gets less chewy. It was also too heavy on the sugar and vinegar, making everything else that was marinated (basically everything) taste too similar. I also snuck bites of my bf's omakase. It was okay. - Salmon w/ Caviar nigiri ($18 - 2 pcs). It was mid, but good. The salmon was marinated, a little vinegary and a little sweet. Sadly, this overpowered the flavor of the salmon and caviar. I appreciated the thicker cut of fish as far as nigiri's go. The rice could have been chewier. - Seared Black Cod nigiri ($12 - 2 pcs). I could taste the flame/broil and a bit more of the fish. - Blue Crab Hand Roll ($10). Shredded crab mixed with plenty of mayo and sugar. The also filling tasted smoky and fishy (in a good way), wrapped in crispy seaweed. There was more crab than rice, but the additional flavors competed with the taste and natural sweetness of the crab. The omakase version came with crispy fried shallots, which also tasted good. - Toro nigiri ($20 - 2 pcs). The marbled tuna belly was soft and melted in my mouth. While the texture was excellent, I still felt that the sour-sweet marinade detracted from the flavor of the fish itself. Handrolls are almost $10 a piece but they tasted like any other hand roll. I highly recommend the toro truffle and seared black cod nigiri! Both were melt in your mouth good and were prepared perfectly. They have a great selection of fish to choose from and not just your average yellowtail, salmon, tuna, etc. We also really enjoyed their skewers - got the wagyu and chicken. Both were seasoned perfectly. Also really liked their mushroom medley appetizer - pretty much mushrooms sautéed a miso butter sauce. Sooooo good! We were really excited to try this place, but unfortunately won't want to return after this experience. All great but the one that will get us back is the tuna on tostada. Had the cucumber salad with garlic dressing which had a very fragrant after taste BUT squeeze some lemon juice on it to neutralize and I promise, it is worth it.
