Visiting some friends in Scottsdale and Sel had caught my attention. Booked a reservation for 4 and excited to visit. We were seated promptly in a very beautifully decorated and intimate dining area where the lights were dim and vibes felt right. Our server showed up a few moments later to ask about our drinks selection. Being our first time here, we were enamored with the many curated cocktails that all sounded like they need to be ordered. Here is where I started getting frustrated and though it was a small inconvenience, it just bothered me. We were not in a rush because we were looking forward to conversation with our friends but wow did the drinks take quite a bit of time to arrive. I would clock it at over 10 minutes to be honest. Not sure if the intricate cocktails create a backlog for the bar or if they were shorthanded. That being said, that's my only complaint. We never got to the main courses but I can highly recommend the steak tartare, the crab dip and most importantly the dumplings. We got to enjoy their seasonal heirloom salad that was to die for as well. Overall food was great, from that perspective. But, to me, what is a must order is the bread pudding. First time dining at Sel, the restaurant was recommended to us by friends. I went on the Sel website and saw the "Off Hours Bourbon" event, which was right up our alley. When we arrived we were warmly greeted. The restaurant is small and has bar, main and patio seating. The atmosphere has a very warm, country, bistro feel. The event started with a reception where I had the pleasure of meeting the Chef's wife May, who was so nice. What followed after the reception was a 4 course dinner pairing with crafted Bourbon cocktails and a pure tasting of the bourbon that was used for the cocktail and the accompanied dish. The dishes were a Beef Tenderloin Steak Tartare, Seared Duck Breast, Hanger Steak Au Poivre followed Mousse Cake for dessert. I learned something about Scottsdale. if you're going out on a summer night to Old Scottsdale...you don't need a reservation because you will be the only one out!! lol Apparently a lot of the restaurants there shut down for part of the summer. Sel was going to temporarily closing the next week, so my timing was just right. Otherwise I would have missed one of the best meals I've ever had. Sel is a Michelin quality New American restaurant with three options of pre-fix menus - land, sea, vegetarian. When I arrived for my reservation there was a guy at the bar. Yeah and he and the employees were it for the night! It had a chilll vibe (I.e. European chill-out music in the background). One of the songs I heard playing was Waves (Robin Schulz Remix) by Mr. Probz. The service was excellent and the head chef Brandon (previously from Monarch) even came over and chatted about the food and his vision. I had - Mi Aventura (drink) - Pork belly Bao - New York strip 12oz - STRAWBERRY-MARZIPAN SHORTCAKE The flavor on the Bao was amazing and it was done so well. The NY strip was prepared a great cut prepared just as it should be and the pink peppercorn sauce complimented it perfectly. I ordered the happy hour beet salad first. It was a smidge oily and sweet for my taste but I fixed that by adding salt, pepper and lime juice. It was generously portioned which I appreciated. Loved the pomegranate seeds and pistachios I should have dipped into the goat cheese sooner. So good! I moved on to the diver scallop dish. We came for a lovely dinner on Saturday evening at 5:15p. It was decently quiet when we arrived and began to pick up in pace around 6:30p. I believe the restaurant went through a makeover of sorts and it's absolutely beautiful and makes for a wonderful ambiance. The food was delicious! Such a cute date night spot. The food was great and our waiter was the best! Gosh I with I remembered his name. He had a Spanish accent and was so fun and helpful. I would definitely recommend Sel. Was going to art walk with some friends from out of town and decided to stop in here because it's so beautiful from the outside with the purple lighting. Very elegant atmosphere. It was happy hour and we were able to get a table on the patio. The service was good and the waiter gave a very good wine recommendation. The truffle fries were very good. I'll start with the good the food is AMAZING, I went and ordered the entire happy hour menu and it didn't disappoint. What you read in the description is what you actually taste The Wagyu Sliders and the Short Rib Bao's were 2 of my favorites. If you're not there for happy hour I'd definitely still order the warmed olives they are delicious Now the restaurant seems kind confused because it is white tablecloth, price point is about $50 per entree and it's definitely elevated cuisine but the website says there's a dress code of Casual Elegance, 2 things I don't think even go together at all but I assumed it meant a little more formal then business casual so that's what I did. I, my party, and most other customers were dressed more formally then the hostess and the employee in the blue shirt sitting at the bar. The servers we're in all black so I don't remember if it was polos or button downs BUT I DIDN'T NOTICE which is the point because they blended in and met the expectation I thought the dress code was. I'm not sure if they have AC if it's broken or they keep it really warm but I was sweating by the time I left and the servers were glistening,. Not an something I would expect at that price point. At some point an employee showed up with their toddler who ran around the restaurant and made quite a bit of noise before they removed the child. At the price point and how the restaurant presents itself I wouldn't expect to see a child there let alone an employee bring one in. The servers don't seem trained in finer dining there was reaching over my head across the table a couple times, the first cocktail which was the special of the night took 20 minutes to get to the table, just minor stuff. I've been to both Zuzu and The Ends nearby with similar price points and they were better experiences with also amazing food, I'm not a stranger to this level of dining, so it was just a little disjointed. Wasn't horrible but could be better or maybe it just needs to be tweaked or changed a little bit. What a hidden gem!! I brought one of my teams at work to this spot for dinner, and here's a breakdown of how I'd rate all the things... Food: 5++ stars. $$$$ is the right rating on price for sure too... but quality is way up there, flavors are epic, and presentation is impressive. Hot tip: If you are coming in hungry, I'd suggest ordering a starter and/or a small plate first. Portions aren't huge for the larger plates, but still a good amount if you aren't starving. I had the braised lamb ravioli, which was delicious, but it came with 4 large ravioli (I think) and I could have eaten at least 2 more :) We also ordered the shrimp tempura starter which came with 2 total pieces.. so make sure to order a few extras if you're hungry. Also, expect some pricey drinks too. My glass of pinot noir was $28, but it did not dissappoint. Service: 5-stars for sure. Our server was really friendly, attentive, but not intrusive. Thank you to all the staff for asking about dietary restrictions ahead of time as well. Vibe: 5++ stars. While this is a white tablecloth spot, there was some fun music going in the background which kept the energy high, and not stuffy for a corporate dinner. I feel old saying this, but I wouldn't have minded the volume a tad quieter, but we could still hear each other if we spoke up. HOT TIP: When I booked our reservation, they charged a $250 deposit on my card, which was taken off the final bill. I was a little surprised by this since it was more than 48 hrs before the reservation, but luckily we didn't need any changes on it. When you have a larger group, maybe ask them what to expect when it comes to this process. Otherwise, really had an amazing experience and highly recommend giving this spot a try!! read more

Loved our little dinner on the patio tonight! We were attending Thursday night Artwalk and walked over to Sel with their cozy patio and relaxing music. Delicious dishes from their happy hour menu, the roasted beet salad with Diver scallops -- wow, layered flavors of thinly sliced beets, glazed nuts, goat cheese dressing and pomegranate seeds, and my husband has black cod fish ( with a subtle miso flavor) and chips (shoestring fried with a spicy aoili). Service was responsive and friendly by Moses, who gave a detailed savory description of our dishes when they arrived, which we more + more often find missing from casual but quality restaurants. I was walking by Sel the other day and noticed their happy hour sign and decided to stop in. Wow I'm so glad I did! Sell is an intimate quaint restaurant offering the finest bites and happy hour around. Service was fast and friendly. It definitely had a regular crowd that you could tell really love to come together and enjoy great food, conversation and wine. We tried the fries, wagyu sliders and bao buns and I wanted more of everything. Fries were made in house and came with a delectable truffle aoili. Our server even asked if we wanted 1 more slider as the order comes with 3 (there were 2 of us). Why don't other people say this? What a wonderful evening. What a special experience I don't know what took us so long to enjoy an evening at Sel. From the hostess to our servers, Luciano and Franco to our absolutely delicious dinner the evening couldn't have been better. They have a happy hour until 6:30 PM that includes being able to have a bottle of wine for half off and at the end of the meal, we were brought a taste of port from Portugal that was delicious. Chef Brandan even came over to thank us for coming in, which was an unexpected touch. The room is small, but intimate was wonderful as you can really carry on a conversation. After having several wonderful experiences at Sel and talking it up to many friends, I brought two other couples on 3/29 and was rather disappointed. Fernando was not working that night and the bar was horribly slow. We sat with empty drinks outside for 20mins between rounds the entire night. The food was wonderful as usual. Service was very off, timing was off, and the communication was poor. Then Sel added an "autograt" of 20% to our check and I later find out they charged my guest $200 to make the reservation for a party of 6 (which was refunded on the check). Because everyone has an off night I'm willing to give them another try but I sure hope that does not happen again. read more

Some of our friends recommended this restaurant to us. So my husband booked a surprise date night. Ambience - The ambience is very intimate and romantic. Service - The service was very good. Our server was knowledgeable and helped us decide if we should go with an appetizer or dessert. Food - Both of our entrées were fantastic! I had the herb roasted venison loin rack. It was encrusted in a pinenut black truffle brioche and served with smoked caramelized onions and celery root purée. It was absolutely delicious and I wish I could have picked my plate up and licked it clean. My husband had the 12 ounce grilled New York strip served with caramelized onions and truffle fries. His steak was also delicious and cooked perfectly. For dessert we had the strawberry marzipan shortcake. It too, was scrumptious. I enjoyed the reduced balsamic glaze. We have eaten at Sel before and it was amazing food... And so when they joined Restaurant Week and we saw their menu, we knew we had to go. It did not disappoint. I was a little worried as we had to make a reservation for outside but the outdoor seating is on the east side, so you are not in the sun, has a lot of beautiful greenery and flowers, misters and some swamp cooler A/C units. So it was actually quite pleasant! We could hear each other talk without having to raise our voices, heard the server perfectly and we weren't overwhelmed by other patrons' conversations. The service was also excellent..our server was very attentive and our waters, for the most part, stayed full. I did run out at the very end but it wasn't a huge deal. The food... Now... The fun part.... The asparagus soup was good. I probably wouldn't order it outside of this fixed menu. The garnishes were definitely needed to add depth to the soup. The prawns had an amazing char on them and the potato pancakes underneath was delicious! The winner of the appetizers, in my opinion, was the charred sweet corn and tapioca pearl ragout. The flavors blended together extremely well and just gave so much depth to this dish. It was delicious and I could have eaten much more. For the entree my husband got the halibut and I got the filet. We always share... His halibut... Oh wow... It was perfectly cooked, had an amazing sear on the outside. It had a wonderful squash puree and some wild ramps. Everything complemented each other for an amazing dish. The filet... I make a mean steak.... And so I find steaks are often times subpar. When I can find a good steak at a restaurant... It's... . This. Steak. Was. Perfectly. Cooked! And seasoned! It had a wonderful sear on the outside, the seasoning wasn't overpowering but made the meat shine. The sauces and potatoes underneath were a wonderful addition! The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the oyster mushroom..one end actually was quite delicious but the wider part lacked flavor and was just chewy. Now for the desserts. We decided to try three. The blackberry-sake cobbler was good... The blackberries were a bit underwhelming. I didn't notice a distinct pop of flavor I would have expected. Th gelato was delicious. The white chocolate pine nut date bread pudding was delicious. I would get it again. It was served hot and the flavors all blended together in a sweet yet savory dish. The bread pudding melted in your mouth. The winner of the desserts was the strawberry Marzipan Shortcake. The chef had won an award for it and it is clear why. You wouldn't expect the depth of flavors... But the shortcake is nice and airy and he adds a sea salt to it that makes everything pop. It was like.. oh this is good... Oh wow... Type of moment. The second the salt hit.. so good. I wasn't sure anything could top the bread pudding but that shortcake was the clear winner for the whole table.. In the pictures, there are sometimes two of th same dish. That is because even the plating was unique and added a fun element to the experience. The fish was served on a dish that reminded me of half of a clam shell.. the steak was served on a plate that looked like a white stone .. and the appetizers were in a unique bowl that was admired by all at the table. Apparently we weren't the only once to notice and comment on them per our server I love Sel and would love to eat there more often but it is quite expensive for the average Joe. What an absolutely breathtaking meal. One to remember for a lifetime. My husband and I had a gift card to blow and Sel was the perfect choice. It's a small and romantic restaurant with big talent brewing inside. Chefs Brandon and John deserve a James Beard award immediately! We did the chef's tasting menu and my husband did the wine pairing. I got champagne, and it was so refreshing! They brought out complimentary homemade sourdough bread and amuse-bouche. The different dishes they served us included gazpacho (with peach sorbet inside?!), prawn, crudo, and venison/filet mignon for our entrees. The one that blew us away the most was the gazpacho - it was legitimately better than gazpacho that we recently had in Spain. Whoever thought about putting the sorbet inside it was a genius. Dessert was bread pudding and peach cobbler, with homemade whipped cream. We could not stop drooling over these decadent desserts. We left so full and even more impressed. The quality of each bite and the care to craft each plate was on another level. This is one of the best meals I've ever had and I recommend you go for a special evening with someone who appreciates good food! Well just when we thought the best could not be topped - we were blown away by our experience at Sel. First, Ava was a great initial first experience - not only with helping with making our reservations, but also as our hostess - first class!! The food was outstanding - please see pictures - the plating was gorgeous. The best of the evening was the tomato soup with a surprise grilled cheese - so flavorful and delicious! The freshness of the ingredients and tastefully crafted courses were tremendous. Had a wonderful conversation with May who oversees all evening activities - she is the best. We grabbed a reservation last night at 5:15. Within 15 minutes the place was full. Service was impeccable and there was no shaming that we were just there for the happy hour. Our waiter was friendly and helped us make our drink selections. Cocktails were fabulous and I'm only sorry that I can't remember the names to share. We split an order of warm olives (cured in house), a roasted beet salad, and the short ribs buns. Perfection. I loved the complexity of the salad; blue cheese arugula, beets, pistachio, pear, balsamic vinagrette. Short rib surprised me too! It had daikon and grated carrots and maybe radish sprouts? Where to start....we found this place by accident as the place we reserved had no inside tables and they sat us at a table outside in the intense heat and we decided to leave. Happen to look into this place and saw 2 seats at the bar and decided to try it out. We are so glad we did. The drinks from the artist that some may call a bar tender were next level. His ability to make bespoke drinks was truly an art and all we told him was what we liked. On top of his brilliance mixing drinks he is also a trained sommelier (wine expert). Any night of the day that would have been enough for a great experience, however we then received the food we ordered which started with DIVER SCALLOP CRUDO. Upon the first bite we were both speechless, the flavors and the textures of the dish were beautifully done. I honestly did not want to drink anything else because the flavor was so amazing. We then moved on to the GRILLED SPANISH OCTOPUS. Again the flavor and texture were amazing with more happiness with each bite. The Squid Ink pasta complimented the Octopus so well and was just as amazing on it's own. Also, want to reiterate we were still drinking the amazing bespoke drinks from the artist behind the bar. The drinks were never the same but all equally delicious and beautiful. We finished the night with the award winning STRAWBERRY-MARZIPAN SHORTCAKE. Again this did not disappoint and closed out the night perfectly. Sweet but not too sweet and the shortcake had to be the best I have ever had. This place is very interesting and it is very accessible. We got the 5-course tasting. I liked the presentation and flavours. For the main course I would suggest the Filet over Venison because it was very dry. One issue I had with some dishes was that they were too salty unfortunately. Otherwise they were great! With regard to the cocktails I would say they're very typical and I think there could be more innovation. The service is good and the ambiance was very cozy! I don't have enough wonderful things to say about this place!! Small place in old town with an amazing chef. We did the tasting menu and if you're looking for an experience you MUST do it. If you thought you'd never try a food before I promise you your pallet will diversify when you try this food. Now, this IS a very fine dining experience and I truly felt that the portions were bigger than expected. Vegetarian tasting menu as well which is cool, very inclusive. Drinks were amazing and bartender recommended drinks were a hit. Service was great too! Our party was 6 people. Given the smaller atmosphere it will be less servers I imagine but it was about half full inside and outside and still run very very well. Chef came by our table which was nice. I will definitely be adding this to my list of favorites for fine dining. read more

I picked this place for my 3 girlfriend's and I to celebrate my 25th birthday. We originally reserved a patio table but a storm was a approaching and weather turning bad so when we were already arranged to sit inside upon on arrival we felt a lot better. Our server was quick and attentive. We got the cheese board for an appetizer, the cheeses were good but nothing to rave about. The Korean style beef short rib steam buns were our favorite for sure. The vegetable garnish on the buns made for the most amazing flavors in my mouth. The cacio e pepe pappardelle pasta was made up large delectable noodles with a light well season sauce and yummy peas. My favorite part of the dining experience was the strawberry shortcake - butter cake that was brought out to celebrate my birthday to end out the evening. It was served up with a side up delightful pink ice cream. It was so yummy and felt super special. read more

A wonderful restaurant with great staff. This was our third time at Sel and it has always been a perfect experience. The food is expertly prepared and always delicious. at our table, we had the sea menu and also the vegetarian menu, both of which were excellent. Everything was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The staff was extremely attentive. It was a beautiful atmosphere outdoors on the terrace. I highly recommend. read more

This place is a new favorite for special nights, celebrations, or a fancy evening to splurge on an experience! I went for the tasting menu and my husband did the same and added the wine pairing. The whole experience and chef-curated plates made a night to remember. Everything was so flavorful and really walked you through different culinary techniques and profiles. Each plate and tasting was well worth it. My favorite item was the lobster tagliatelle - the lobster with the umami flavors blended wonderfully with the homemade pasta! The pasta was meaty and soaked up the garlic and butterfly goodness! The ambiance and service felt high class but not stuck up! This was a big bonus because the service we had was phenomenal.
