The place has great energy, and the food was memorable. We celebrated ourselves, and each got a glass of rosé (all day). Got the softest, melt in tour mouth gnocchi we have ever sunk our teeth into as well as some walleye. The thing we remember most was the Michigan pork with the pineapple crema and adobo. Had dinner last night. Parking can be issue at times. There is empty field across street I would recommend if you find issues due to street parking being taken. Inside is very inviting with a nice bar and ample seating for larger parties as well. Food is served "family style" to share plates. Like tapas style small. I had to order two entrees. I'm regretting not taking pics. I ordered the Tagliatelle for $27 and it was a small portion. My 2nd entree was the oven roasted squash. I'm not sure what else I can share that hasn't already been mentioned. This place has earned a reputation and deserves to be as beloved as it is. They were part of the original run of new restaurants that got people excited about going to Midtown. I'm so pleased that they have apparently not rested on their laurels. The room is elegantly appointed. The tables are sleek and the lighting is pleasant. The bar is incredibly well appointed with bar staff that knows what they're doing. When my wife couldn't find an item on the drink menu that caught her eye I knew they would be able to craft something custom for her that she would love and they did. The menu is nicely varied and they do a great job of giving you high-quality but without it being super complicated. My wife ordered the whole trout and indicated it was perfect. I went with the custom pork cutlet and it was fantastic. Wonderful seasoning and nice and crispy. As good as the food is, the service was even better. Our server was absolutely delightful. She kept up with us all night and had a smile on her face the entire time. I was so pleased to see every staff member hustling and working the room. This is clearly a crew that enjoys working together and taking care of the customers. This was an expensive meal of course, but it was money well spent. As always, the experience my wife and I had at Selden Standard was amazing. We were able to snag a last minute reservation at the chef's counter. As soon as I watched the first piece of pork being put on the grill, I knew that was what I was going to order, and it didn't disappoint. The beet salad seemed to be very popular that night, as we saw them flying out of the kitchen the entire time. The sweet potato agnolotti was so good and flavorful. If you weren't looking at it when you ate it, you might almost wonder if it was a dessert! The pavlova was perfectly made, melt in your mouth goodness. Had dinner here last night. First off, the service was fantastic. Water glasses constantly filled, server - just the right amount of attentiveness, clean plates/silverware provided at various parts of the meal, etc. Understanding the menu changes frequently - here is what we had: Seared Halloumi - came with apple butter, pickled fennel, za'atar. I think there might have been celery too. Delicious. Beet salad - companion had and said the beets were good, but the whipped ricotta underneath lacked flavor. This was the only item that we weren't raving about. Grilled cabbage - came with charred chile vinaigrette, jalapeno and crispy shallot. I was worried it was going to be too spicy, but just had a little bit of heat - very tasty. Walleye in a paprika broth with spaetzle, creme fraiche, herbs. Grilled (Ora) King Salmon - grilled over a wood fire (which we watched) and perfectly cooked. Sat on a potato cake and a citrus vinaigrette which I would have been happy to drink by itself. Flourless chocolate cake - the real stars of this dessert were the accompaniments - tahini ice cream and a sesame brittle that I would eat on its own. We had another fabulous experience at Selden Standard. All six of the dishes we shared were unique and delicious. As always, their oven roasted potatoes with smoked paprika aioli, charred scallions, and cilantro were my personal favorite of the night. Also delicious was the grilled chorizo made with heirloom beans and pepper relish. The Thai grilled chicken is cooked to perfection with charring on the outside, yet perfectly moist on the inside. It's made with herbs, fish sauce, and kohlrabi salad. Some of the jalapenos in the salad were a bit fiery, so steer clear if you're sensitive to that. Next up is rigatoni with fennel sausage ragu, rapini, and parmesan. One of the favorites at our table of five! The roasted asparagus with pistachio butter, pickled scallions, and crispy bulgar was a surprise favorite, with the crispy bulgar making this dish extra special. My least favorite was potato gnocchi made with kale pesto and stracciatella. It was a texture thing for me because the gnocchi is fresh and softer than I'd like. My daughter enjoyed it, and my husband LOVED this dish, so I still give it high marks. Food isn't the only superstar. The front desk was SO accommodating when we had someone come to town last minute and they graciously added him to our reservation. After parking, I was the last to arrive from my party and was greeted by name--nice touch! The wait staff never makes you feel rushed, are quick to offer answers to all questions, and will quickly replenish bread and drinks throughout your meal. The vibe is alive and energizing, which is part of what brings people back time and again--that, and the service, and the shining star---the food. Book well in advance if you want to be sure to get a dining table. Booking communal dining is great too if there are just two of you, but when it's busy, it'd be hard to socialize at the communal table with more than two because of the noise from conversations throughout the restaurant. AMAZING!!! From the time we walked through the door it was a great experience. The staff, vibe and food were wonderful! Our waiter Andrew was so nice, very knowledgeable about the food and drinks and just had a great personality! The vibe, although little loud it fit the scene, music, happy people and lively! Amazing food and service but we made a reservation two weeks in advance at 5:45pm and still got sat at the chef counter even though the place was pretty empty and we specifically didn't select that when making the reservation. It's hard to say anything that hasn't already been said about Selden Standard. The food is creative, flavorful, and can transform your idea of "fine dining"... The location is outside of the full chaos of downtown with ample street parking, the hosts are friendly and accommodating... We showed up almost 30 minutes early for my birthday dinner reservation (reservations are highly recommended, btw) and it was pouring rain outside. I called to see if they could seat us and the host replied with a super cheerful "absolutely" so we ran to the door and got inside before being fully drenched. After being seated and ordering cocktails, we were greeted by one of the nicest and most knowledgeable servers we've ever had and the menu items and specials were explained along with recommendations for the pacing and combinations of items and courses. We had a delicious meal and left full and happy and were not shocked by the bill, given the level of skill this kitchen is operating with... Everything tasted amazing, I cussed (a lot) in wonder at how it was possible to make things taste so good... This is one of the few places that makes me want to work in the culinary world so I can apprentice in the kitchen, learn how it's done, and then make fantastic food for my friends and family. A few weeks ago was our third trip to Selden, each time has been enough of a satisfying experience to ride the crest of the wave into the next until tonight. Despite the food meeting the mark, although not quite peaking into the realm of exceptional, an underwhelming service incident has put the pause on any future trips for my wife and I. As I have noted in other reviews, my wife and I are parents to a young child and every evening out is a luxury where every detail matters. And as a leader of leaders of teams providing service I find my biggest experience triggers coming from details that are simple and could be easily solved. That night met both check boxes leading to a two star review on what should have been more. Selden's reservation system runs through the website Open Table and lists options for seating - Communal Table, Dining Room, Chef's Counter, or Patio. Tonight was a rare night out for my wife and I, a treat for her birthday and a celebration of our recent second pregnancy (even fewer dining trips coming soon!). I chose Dining Room and was able to confirm that on site, however we were seated at a communal dining table closely next to another party of two despite there being several other open two tops available. Upon asking we were directed to the bar or given the option of sitting one setting over from the couple. Let's say Open Table glitched and said Communal instead of Dining Room on Selden's end..okay..mistakes happen. No ones fault. Why not move the reservations who have arrived to the preferred two tops? Why sit them directly next to each other at a communal table inches away from each other? Why when approached about the situation direct us two the bar with a "well it's first come first served at this bar only" instead of attempting to turn the bad situation into a good one? As always this is where I find myself most perplexed. Your duty at any job anywhere when confronted with a client having an underwhelming situation is to create a positive one. Even with minimal effort that creates a client for life. That did not happen that night. Will we return to Selden Standard? Someday...maybe? Considering the wide variety of offerings downtown Detroit has I don't know if it is worth it considering the lingering memory of that night. read more

Amazing dinner experience! A very classy and popular dinner spot in Detroit and we definitely wanted to try it as we were visiting Detroit for the weekend! Definitely not disappointed with any part of the experience. The dishes are smaller portions and meant to be shared so we got several to split. From starters to entrees to dessert, it was a great culinary experience. Our server helped us pick out some of their faves and she split our choices to make it into a perfect meal, deciding which dishes should come at at which time. Everything was amazing. My faves would have to be the lamb ragu (pasta was fresh and perfect) and the seafood fideua (not even sure how to describe this one, but worth a try if you like seafood!). Very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, we sat outside in the patio area. A few more umbrellas to block the direct sunlight would be a welcome addition, if you can't snag a table in the shade. The service was good but I had a hard time hearing the various food runners who were explaining the dishes over the music. Hands down some of the best food I've had in a long time! Came during a work trip and this place was recommended by a few people, plus my own research showed that it would be a place I would like. Upon arriving, we were warmly greeted by 2 hostesses. They informed us our table was getting set and would be seated shortly. It was a Tuesday night, and the place was still buzzing with energy and had a trendy ambiance. Our server, Kat, was incredibly kind, professional, and very attentive. She greeted our table of 4 right away, offered the specials and filled our waters. She recommended 8 dishes between the 4 of us, and it was indeed the perfect amount since the food is more of a tapas style/ shared plate dining. I was very happy about this because it would have been sad to not get to try all of the dishes! The dishes came out as they were ready, which was staggered. I appreciated this since it gave us time to enjoy every single dish, and the table was never over flowing with plates. We started with the sweet potato flatbread special and the Ricotta Gnocci. And OMG I savored every single bite. The plates were wiped clean as these were both phenomenal. The flavors, texture....everything! The gnocchi literally melts in your mouth. Next we got the Roasted cauliflower and Grilled Michigan Pork. Again...more amazing dishes both with so many complimentary flavors layered in every bite. The next dishes were the Pan Roasted Half Chicken and Smoked potatoes. I don't know what they did to that chicken but it was the best chicken I've ever had; the edges were crispy and the inside was juicy and flavorful. Then we got the Papparedelle pasta...this was so good we ordered another one because we also had one more guest show up. The last dinner dish we ordered was the Trout. Out of every dish this was probably my least favorite even though it was still delicious. I think it was more of a texture thing and the fact that it's a whole fish. Last but not least we had to get a dessert to round out the perfect dinner. We decided on the Chocolate Hazelnut Bar...and wow, was that the best way to end the night. Not overly heavy, but light, with different textures and flavors. Even though I wasn't a fan of how they laid out their wine menu (doesn't say the wine varietal, just says tasting notes) they had a good variety of speciality cocktails and wines. We tried the How Many Licks and Modern Medicine before switching to wine. I hope to visit Detroit again just so I can eat here! If it doesn't have one already it should at least get a Michelin mention, because this entire menu is 10/10. read more

Nothing bad about the service or atmosphere and no complaints but not particularly outstanding either. We came here on a Sunday evening. No problem getting a reservation. However, I was very sorry I forgot to call the day of the reservation to reserve a place on the outdoor patio. It looked like an oasis. However, our table inside was very nice as well. When we arrived, we ordered cocktails. My dining companion ordered a Fool for You. It was a little too smoky for her so she changed her order to Not Another Word. She liked that better. I had the Peruvian Punch. It was very nice. I could see drinking it by the beach. It had tropical flavors and was not hideously priced at $13. We ordered the grilled romaine salad, the Ricotta Agneolotti (a pasta dish), the crispy walleye and the octopus à la Plancha. The grilled romaine salad was awesome. Lots of crispy crunchy stuff on a very well grilled part of the Romaine. Very well done and the flavors were bright. The pasta is homemade, and stuffed with ricotta. It had mushrooms, asparagus and garlic bread crumbs. Excellent! The crispy walleye came in a Thai broth. I thought it would not be crispy, given it was served in a broth with bok choy, but it was. The octopus came on a bed of potatoes with a some lemon and capers. It was tender and really flavorful. A BIG shout out to the staff. When the runners would bring the food they would explain exactly what each dish was. Which is how it should be, but it isn't that way everywhere. Excellent service. The music in the background was what I would describe as electronic maybe? We have an app on our phone - the noise level in the restaurant was between 72-80 decibels. Not exactly quiet but not too loud either. I think it helps that the restaurants was not at full capacity yet and the doors were open. I really enjoyed this experience and highly recommend it. Our server was great. Kept checking in on us throughout the night even though it was late, and we were one of two parties left. She gave us great recs. We tried the vegetable carpaccio, beet salad, roasted carrots, seared halloumi, smoked potatoes, tagliatelle, grilled Michigan pork. I was impressed with all the above other than the carpaccio.
