    Shaker's Cherry Pie
    Carolyn B.

Very busy at 11:30 am on Sunday but the parking opens up as people leave. The restaurant was full with groups waiting outside. We waited about 15 minutes for a party of 5 and received quick service for our orders and food delivery. The coffee is refilled frequently and is nice and strong. I ordered the chicken curry salad with alfafa sprouts on croissant with a substitute of sweet potato fries instead of breakfast like everyone else. I could only finish half because it was quite generous. Two of our group ordered hash browns, which looked slightly burnt, but they didn't complain. The pancakes were huge and I noticed they are a very popular item. Before leaving, I bought a cherry pie for $19. I haven't visited Shakers in probably 30 years, and the menu has definitely changed! But happy to see they still carry the famous zucchini bread and that the restaurant is still busy. Hope they can continue to serve happy customers. By the way, we had the cherry pie for dessert after dinner and it is full of cherries, not overly sweet with a flakey crust. Yum!

I came here to meet my girlfriend for breakfast, it was a reunion because we worked together 16 years ago. The restaurant has comfortable booths and tables to sit, the breakfast menu was good and had a decent selection of American breakfast foods. We both ordered omelette dishes, she had the one with avocado, with home fries, I had the California with cheese, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and peppers, and tater tots. We both ordered the zucchini bread with butter, it was delicious. We had a great time reminiscing about our work years together and we talked about the grown kids. The restaurant has plenty of parking, and the servers brought us more ketchup, salsa, hot water, and even helped recommend the omelette that I ate. We'll definitely be coming back here soon, it's very close to the 110 freeway, so access to the restaurant is very convenient.

There has been a couple of local media stories saying that Shakers will be shutting down any day. I believe the cause of closure is some new development in the city. The employees do not seem to know the exact closure date, but I was hearing everything from spring of this year to a couple of years from now. Regardless, the place has been packed. You can hardly get a spot in the parking lot. I went twice during the past couple of weeks. I have to say the service and food is definitely above average for what you would expect from a small, local diner. I like the bustling ambience and especially Googie architecture. I love breakfast for dinner so usually upped for an egg and high protein dish, although all their baked goods are excellent. I also really like their chili and patty melt. My friend recently had the club sandwich and really enjoyed it. What I was really surprised and delighted with was their butter cake topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a berry compote. The cake is rolled in a crunchy type of crumble and the inside is warm and gooey. It goes so well with the cold ice cream and the berries which are slightly tart. This dessert rivals most desserts I have had in fancy restaurants within the past year. I have been coming to this place for many many years and hope to enjoy it as much as possible before it closes.

What a cute diner! Went around 8pm and there were tons of people. We were seated right away and had our drink orders taken. Good coffee and good food! French fries, chicken strips, cheeseburger & tater tots. The tater tots were a bit oily for me but everything else was really good. Gina, our waitress, was so nice and checked in on us and refilled our coffee multiple times :)

I grew up in SoPas, so I remember this place from way back when. I think it was originally called Salt Shaker, and their sister restaurant down the street (now Canoe House) was called House of Pies. It's been awhile since I've been here. The visit was partially spurred by the rumour (confirmed in online statements) Shakers would be closing in early 2026 to make space for a Senior housing development. However, the host told me that was just a rumour, they were not closing??!! I don't know who to believe! Shakers looked unchanged since my last visit, inside and out. Love the mid-Century Googie architecture. I ordered 2 dishes, Southern Fried Steak and eggs and the Monte Cristo sandwich. It's diner food done pretty well. The Steak came with a biscuit and country gravy over both the steak and biscuit. The hashbrowns were fine. I actually packed the Monte Cristo to go, but it came with a pretty large and decent salad (there are other options) and I paid $2.50 for onion rings that were also decent. The strawberry lemonade is delish and includes refills. My server was fine but clearly overworked; her section was huge which led to delays even though she was running her rear off. I asked for my check early to avoid further wait. Shakers is known for their zucchini bread, they had a table full of them at the register in 2 sizes. I got the smaller but still ample one to go. I hope the closure rumour is false.

Always a great place to grab a nice breakfast or lunch for a reasonable price. Cool atmosphere with very nice staff. Everyone is helpful. Nice big parking lot with plenty of parking.

$7 for a tiny strawberry pie slice.

I stopped by here to pick up some of their amazing Zucchini Bread and decided to add a slice of strawberry pie to try it. The girl helping me was very nice and super helpful. But.... When I got home, I opened my box of pie to try it. At $7 a slice, I was expecting a normal pie slice of delicious pie. Instead it was 4 glazed strawberries with 2 inches of crust, and nearly no crust on the bottom. I think the whole pie is about $20 so do the math of how a $7 slice should be. You don't even use eggs in pie crust, so you can't say the price is due to crazy egg prices. I was p*$$ed. I showed my husband and he was in disbelief at the size of the slice. Super nice girl needs to learn how to cut a pie slice. I did not pay for a Costco sample of pie. I immediately called Shakers and spoke to the manager Jonathan and requested a refund. He was able to take care of that for me. My tip for all of you is to look inside your box of to-go pie before you leave so you don't get a lame slice like I did. That being said, the couple bites of pie we did try were very good.

It is true what they say. Shakers is closing its doors early 2026 for a high rise senior housing that is going up. I love the diner warm feeling the second I walk in. Childhood memories of that delicious breakfast with the famous zucchini bread. The staff is overworked but so lovely and I will miss them. Make sure to visit and enjoy this mid century gem soon. I recommend the breakfast dishes or thanksgiving sandwich (very limited time). Take a glance at the beautiful architecture by Armet and Davis. Canoe house will continue the zucchini bread (same owner). Thank you for 85 years of service to South Pasadena.

First time here for Breakfast/Lunch and we ordered the Shaker Delight Cheeseburger and fries ($13.25) and California Omelette without ham (16.50 + .50 upcharge for eggs) and we ordered desserts, Boysenberry Pie ($7.50), Shakers "Famous"Carrot Cake ($6.95) and a Hot Fudge Sundae ($6.95). The burger was just ok...I would choose something else next time. The fries weren't cold but they weren't fresh out of the fryer and they were pretty salty. The Omelette was on the bland side...it could use some spice. The Boysenberry pie was wonderful and worth coming here for. Carrot Cake is usually my all time favorite but this one seemed to be more of a bread consistency and not my favorite. The flavors were good, but the consistency just wasn't my favorite. The Hot Fudge Sundae was tasty as it should be. Today, we seated ourself outside on the covered patio. Service was very casual.

Corned Beef Hash & Biscuits, Hashbrowns, Carrot Cake
    Cindy T.

The corned beef hash and hash browns were so good!! Loved how crispy it was, and the corned beef was flavorful, with a nice bite to it. The eggs were also cooked perfectly. For the biscuits and gravy, I thought the flavor of the gravy was very nice, but it was a little too thick. The biscuits were okay, they tasted like the Pillsbury canned biscuits. The carrot cake was delicious! Nicely spiced, perfect amount of frosting, and loved how you can see the freshly grated carrots in it. The coffee was not that good. It tasted very watered down. The service was okay. The staff was friendly, but it took a while for our food to come out. Overall, I think this diner is so cute, and would come back just for the corned beef and hashbrowns!

If this ceiling could tell a story .

Still one of my favorite burgers around. Service seems better now that they are busier and more consistent. Ambiance hasn't really changed. Try it before they go away...

Wow! Hellll-O Shakers! Sorry this is only the first time during your storied history that I've visited, but it WILL NOT be the last! Your vibe reminded me of the original Norm's we inhabit on occasion, so we thought we'd give you a try. We were VERY HAPPY we did! I went with the salmon and chose pilaf over mashed or baked potato. It came out with veggies and MAN was it nice to finally eat at a restaurant that knows how to perfectly cook fresh veg and NOT drown them in butter. And the salmon was delicious as well. I'm not one for tartar sauce, but yours is REALLY GOOD! Not just relish in mayo like most places. And my choice of garlic flat bread or in-house baked zucchini bread?!? Def gotta go with that zucchini bread! And a generous serving at that! Hubs was excited for pot roast and thoroughly enjoyed his meal. I liked that his veggies were traditional pot roast staples, peas, carrots and cubed potatoes and the gravy looked very yummy. He appreciated he could choose a baked potato over mashed. He went with the flat bread garlic, which seemed like a 1/4 slice of a pita, so not too big, but he doesn't care for zucchini, so he was happy. I had enough room to answer the call of the baked in-house, and apparently "signature", carrot cake that was ringing my line. Yum! Moist and fresh and a perfect amount of icing. Gina is a workhorse and a lovely team member. Made us feel like we were dining regulars. Many booths around us did seem to be just that. Couples, families, friends of all ages seem to fill this restaurant. Shakers was a delightful surprise! We really dug the Mid Century Modern interior and your shout out to NCR technology - a retired cash register gleaming in the spotlight! Thanks for a great meal and delightful dining experience. We just may see you again tomorrow, but if not then, soon. We'll be back. Cheers! "CC"

A venerable, local institution that has served millions of meals over the decades! Eat here NOW as unfortunately, a developer will soon raze the building to construct a monstrous apartment on the hallowed grounds of the beloved Shakers. Alas, can't anything be done to save the classic mid-century Googie architectural restaurant that literally feeds the whole community?! HELP!

Friend, now I know what food is like in prison. The gravy was a bland, featureless runny liquid (no, even runnier than you're thinking), devoid of any seasoning whatsoever. I legitimately believe they dug a pan that used to have gravy in it out of the dirty dishes, swished some water around in it and poured it on my plate. The "biscuits" were hardly any better, lacking any hint of butter or flake, instead seeming like someone stirred up some Bisquick and threw it on the flattop grill. This meal was an insult and a punishment, and as part of a $70 check it felt like I was being personally invited to a fistfight by the dumpster. Alas, I had somewhere else to be. And somewhere else, anywhere else, is what I'll choose next time when breakfast is due. For reference, biscuits and gravy should include round, buttery, flaky biscuits using dough that was rolled out, cut, and baked. Gravy in this context is a richer, creamier milk gravy with substance, at minimum seasoned with fresh cracked pepper and perhaps some paprika. Offering a sausage gravy wouldn't hurt either. Or don't offer biscuits and gravy at all if you don't know what the f**k you're doing.

Food here is very safe, trite, hackneyed California cuisine beaten to death like a worn out horse. It's not really bad and not very good offending no one, but food that is boring and not particularly drop dead flavourful. I wasn't super hungry and decided to order more of the sides. 1) French Fries with some skin on, looking rustic, had a touch of that ineffable earthy potato flavour. Asked for extra crispy, but just got a bit crispy so their default fries must be rather limp. Standard ketchup in a steel ramekin. 2) Roasted Golden Beet & Arrugula Salad had sweet, softer, smooth texture, Arrugula had a fibrous, good green herbal, peanut oil scented flavour. Not too funky, creamy goat cheese. Roasted walnut halves. All napped with a subtle Champagne Vinaigrette. Portion was about half of what would be expected in other comparable restaurants. 3) Bread Pudding: The bread was spongy, moist, eggy almost like a flan but lacked a deeper dairy, milkiness as well as lack of hints of warm spices such as cinnamon, allspice, ginger, cloves. Bland would describe the general overall flavour. Topped with cream rich ice cream. Scattering of blueberry, blackberry, strawberry. At home, I drizzled on Grand Marnier for more citrus cognac aromatics. 1-3a) Iced Tea The food here seems to be the Midwest version of what California cuisine should be. Middle of the road, steady as she goes, don't rock the boat. Our waitress was efficient, helpful, thoughtful in a business-like manner which facilitated our group of 8. The male helper with a moustache and the inked hand was great at keeping our glasses topped off. 3 stars for a safe, not overly effusive food that does not offend. For years I passed this place and never noticed it, but learned from another customer it's a staple for locals and more. Order outside and pick up inside. Tables outside and inside. I ordered the burrito (avocado, lettuce, cheese, & pico de gallo). It was delicious and huge like others stated. I used their fork for size reference. My husband had their pastrami ruben. Both order the exact same thing, one right after the other. A few minutes later, both orders are called. First guy gets his order and says he needs more red salsa. He gets more salsa, no questions, no charge. Second guy gets his exact same order immediately after. He asks if he can have an extra salsa. He's told it's an extra $0.75. There was no pause, no gap in between the 2 men's interactions. Literally stood next to each other, ordered the same thing, one got free salsa, the other got charged. A table full of people nearby, tilt their heads and cock their eyebrows in disbelief. Free salsa guy happens to be White. Paid salsa guy is Asian. Coincidence? You can decide for yourself. Is having to spend an extra $0.75 a big deal? No. Is blatant discrimination? It's enough to stop supporting this business.
