I saw the sign here claiming best waffles in town so had to try 'em out. The atmosphere is nice, relaxed with friendly staff and chilled music(not loud and annoying). They have a nice long bar and also tables. The coffee was excellent. My waffle main event was the recommended Gouda and sausage. It had large, juicy sausage patties with luscious cheese and was brought out in under 10 minutes. They have this banner "best waffle in town" hanging in front of their cafe so finally I had to stop. I pass this place 2-3 times a week. As I read the ingredients and process and where this family recipe travels from, I get very excited to think this waffle COULD BE the best waffle I ever had. Literally, the best waffle I ever had was in Amsterdam. It's was sort of like frozen cookie dough placed on a waffle iron and it smelled of carmalized sugar and goodness and was sort of a denser waffle: sweet, easy to bite through and chewy. So, this waffle had a lot to live up to. Long story shortened, is that, it's a terrific waffle and the closest I've come to the consistency of the 'Amsterdam' waffle here in the States. There was just one young couple sitting inside quietly in the window with coffee only, and two couples outside enjoying their waffles- no one sitting at the counter (I think six seats at least)....and no one at the many empty tables inside So......we sit at the counter enjoying the atmosphere and after more than 10 minutes (10!) of patient waiting, with not any eye contact from the 2 servers, I leaned over and politely managed to get one of the girl's attention (not an easy task) I asked politely if she wouldn't mind giving us a coffee to get started and then perhaps a menu - and what did she recommend ? as we had been waiting awhile. (Understatement here). She looks at me and says "maybe you should go somewhere else because we are too busy right now (this with SEVEN / EIGHT EMPTY TABLES BEHIND ME). I sat back and laughed aloud incredulously. "You are asking me to leave?" As a business owner myself I thought of asking to speak to the owner - and tell the poor chap he's loosing customers and better get new staff quick- and it's really not good, because neither girl gives a crap about the customers at all - the two poor girls were overwhelmed by three mothers with strollers - i blinked my eyes in disbelief and told her "you're not serious, really? It turns out that I am a huge fan of Liege waffles, which is not surprising. They sold them at a Jamba Juice near Rice, but I don't see them in the LA Jamba Juices. I took my sister here for a belated birthday brunch, and it was so good! The interior had that "trendy" look with a light blue & orange color scheme. We sat at the counter and got to watch them make everything, which was cool, but it also made me more aware of how overpriced the place was. And so yes, it was quite delicious. But I probably won't go back anytime soon unless you visit me and decide you really, really want a Liege waffle. read more

Was passing by this place with my kid that loves waffles and we needed to grab some breakfast. First impression, they only do waffles, or plain poached eggs (cooked in the microwave) with a side of fruits. Took my kid to the bathroom, to which he said "smells disgusting", and omg, it's really disgusting. Toilet is cover with..., we you can guess with what, trash bin is full of napkins and no soap in the dispenser. The whole place is dirty, I mean really dirty, probably haven't been dusted for a very long time. Hair and dust everywhere. Dead flies, crumbs under the tables. Table next to us have been left dirty with leftovers for the whole time we stayed here. I ordered poached eggs with avocado. Got avocado full of black spots. So this place boasts having the best voted waffle in LA. Wait staff is super attentive and friendly. They brought us samples of the waffles and their smooth and crunchy speculoos. The waffles are Belgian style so they don't need butter or syrup and they're made so there's sugar pearls and cinnamon inside. It gives them a sort of grainy texture but they are very tasty if a little dry. I got mine with strawberries so that alleviated it a little. They're also pretty heavy so I felt full with just one even though they're not very big. Would be down to go back but with a bigger appetite. read more

It's too bad because I live just down the street from this place and I could come here often with friends and family, but I most definitely will not be visiting again. The reason? The service. If you're craving waffles, come here! I had heard about this place for a while but hadn't had the chance to check it out until we moved into the area recently. Their menu is limited to sweet and savory waffles, coffee drinks, and eggs. You can either create your own waffle or pick one of their recipes. Last time we came here we got the Elvis waffle (peanut butter, banana, crumbled bacon, honey) and the Sausage Gouda waffle sandwich (two waffles sandwiching 2 sausage patties, smoked gouda cheese, and scrambled eggs). What really impressed me with this place was their ability to serve combinations that weren't too sweet or savory for the waffles. Their waffles were also perfectly crispy on the outside while maintaining the sweet, chewy center of your typical Belgian waffle. I would definitely come back here again whenever I'm craving something a little more decadent than over easy eggs. The best part of this place are of course what they are known for: the traditional liege waffle. I ordered one with chocolate hazelnut swirl (basically Nutella) and strawberries and a green sencha tea. We did wait a little while for the waffles (~25 mins) but the server was also the only one working at the time and was nice to add whipped cream on mine for free. The additional toppings were $1.30 each which in my opinion is pricey given that the waffle is pretty small. However the waffle quality was superb, they make it with sugar chunks in the batter which adds a crunch to the waffle. If you're a fan of waffles like I am, this place is definitely a must-try. I don't know how I found this place but I did. Well, I found it on Yelp of course but do not remember how I cam about looking for it or whose review I read before that lead me here. Shaky has themselves a strong start on yelp for only being open 9 months. They are a waffle shop and make their famous Liege waffle dough on site. It is Syrup but for a refined pallet and style. Cool, seductive music makes you close your eyes and sway in your seat as you eat your sophisticated Liege Waffle. Servers Luis and John were quite the dapperest of lads. Charming and chatty and Luis was easy on the eyes. And ears as his accent was swoonworthy. The Liege Waffles are their specialty and you can get them pretty much any way you want. Both Sweet and Savory offerings are both offered. I went for the :create my own". Nutella, Peanut Butter and Bananas. My order was made right before my eyes and was handed over after much care. It was as delightful as can be. Luis really can make up a mean waffle. Luis came over a little later and said we had to try something. He handed over two samples for us to try. I didn't even ask what they were. I took a bite and O-M-G. I tried the other one and WOW I didn't think it was possible for the first one to get any better but it did. This great sample Luis gave us was something called Speculoos. They have it in both crunchy and regular. The crunchy one is the way to go. This stuff was amazeballs. It was like a hazelnut peanut butter but not. I can't really describe it other than it was so epically good. I wish I would have read fellow yelper Amy S's quick tip before I ordered as she said 'Get the speculoos spread (crunchy)! You'll thank me later". I did thank her to btw even though all I got to try was a sample. I ordered my first ever Americano here and I am now a forever fan of that coffee drink. More or less a "do one thing and do it well" sort of spot, though a few egg dishes do join the Liege Waffles on the menu, it was after a brief perusal of the various toppings that an order was placed and deemed a "great choice" by my waitress as expectedly "hip" coffee house favorites chimed overhead. Long and narrow in size, local artists invited to display and sell pieces hung along the walls, it was the work of a hirsuit young man to individually craft each Waffle and sampling a piece of the original with powdered sugar while I waited the exterior crunch and sugar pearls were immediate reasons for optimism, though it was somewhat disappointing to learn the baked goods at the register are not made in-house. "Pricy" to an extent, though quality butter, sugar and spreads show Shaky Alibi's commitment to doing things right, it was as the Waffle was being prepared that I decided to indulge in one of the restaurant's more recent creations and although generally a coffee "purist" aside from a bit of sweetener I have to admit the chocolate coated waffle shot glass is a clever little invention, the double shot of espresso poured over ice cream from McConnell's even more outlandish when sprinkled with crispy bacon. Watching the cook carefully knife my waffle from the press, a golden hue dominating the crisp exterior as pockets of butter and punctuation marks of sugar compete for top billing in the fluffy core beneath, it was only after toasted pecans and a layer of imported Belgian Caramel were added from a small jar that the $7.75 treat arrived at the table, each bite every bit on par with Liege waffles experienced to date Stateside and filling me with hopes that those overseas may indeed be as memorable at "half the price," as trusted sources say. read more

Just another one of those standard waffle/cafe/ultra-chic/lounges that keep popping up everywhere...waffle bar? What?! Savory and sweet waffles, or perhaps just a cafe macchiato while writing the great American novel. The setting is cool with clean lines, as if you have a neat and modern kitchen (instead of your horrible messy one at home), except with this one, you can allow others to cook for you, then also clean-up after your crap while you do your thing and listen to cool lounge music. This makes Shaky Alibi, my friends, is a keeper. If you have a friend name Shiek Alibaba, you can bring him with. Additionally, and just before 'posting' the above...John, aka "King Barista", just convinced me that I got to try one of the savory waffles on my next visit. I thought this place would be much more crowded given the fact they were featured on local major news channel. I've been here three times so far and each time it was pretty empty. May it was during off peak hours. Anyway, the coffee drinks here are great and so are the waffles. My wife really likes the cappuccino here. The waffles are pretty simple. You have your choice of sweet or savory. It comes with powdered sugar and you can add your toppings such as hazelnut, strawberry, speculoos (definitely have to try these), etc. The savory liege waffles also come sprinkled with powdered sugar but you get to choose your meat (like black forest ham) and cheese (like smoked gouda). It's a pretty casual place with modern decor. You just seat yourself and one of the servers brings the menu. They seem to have a rotating art exhibit on the wall. Not positive but I think some of them were for sale. Last time I saw X-Men comic strips and recently was changed to random animal art and photography. I knew I was gonna love this spot when I first heard the name. It turns out I was right- I totally heart this place! First of all, Shaky Alibi is already a winner just for being located on the corner of Martel and Beverly. It's in a perfect location for people watching, celebrity spotting and just to chill. When you consider the Free WiFi, delicious coffee drinks, amazing waffles- both sweet and savory, and the really cute/sweet baristas who work here, you discover that it is the perfect little coffee house! I actually come here to write with my writing partner every week, usually on Tuesdays. We park ourselves at our usual table by the window and bang away on our laptops for hours at a time. Max, the super cute hipster barista who in my mind lives there, takes such good care of us. We heart him. Really dope modern art and photography decorate the walls in this place. Its cozy and modern, has a cool vibe and always plays good music. It is very uniquely LA in a trendy yet unpretentious way. I recommend Shaky Alibi as a great little spot to meet a friend or a date for lunch or coffee, when you need to find a cool and quiet place to work, or just to drop in and grab a really special snack. By snack I'm talking about the waffles. Believe me the waffles here are really really delicious, and the savory waffles are just awesome and different.
