!! Avoid the restaurant at all costs !! (I kind of hate to write this, because Shan-E-Punjab was fabulous the first time I went about a year and a half ago. I was hooked and went ALL. THE. TIME. Unfortunately, the quality and service has decreased dramatically and friends/family that once frequented the restaurant agree!) SO WHATCHANGED MY MIND ABOUT A PLACE THAT USED TO BE MY ALL TIME FAVORITE? Let me fill you in on a few incidences that ended my love for this place for good. - Ordered gol gappa, a traditional appetizer that has chutney and chickpeas served in a cracker-like shell. They served me stale gol gappa ... very stale. I was so bummed. - I went to dinner with some friends (vegans -- which is important to note because this is one of the few began friendly places in the Stockton area) and two of their dishes had severely undercooked potato. It was inedible. They wanted to have both dishes removed from their bill but settled for having the dish remade and placed to-go. - I ordered 25 samosas the day before a friends party. My boyfriend (who speaks Punjabi) called the order in to limit miscommunication. He also called the day of the party to ensure the order is confirmed. I was scheduled to pick up at 2:30pm. I arrived at 2:45pm and was informed that my order wasn't ready -- in fact, my order was never even made! The guy looked at me like I was crazy and kept asking me questions like "who took your order on the phone / what time did you order it / when did you order it." I called my boyfriend in since he speaks the same language and placed the order. To my surprise, the order was never placed because it "must have been misplaced." There was zero empathy for my misfortune or time. I was not offered a solution besides "you can wait and we will make it now." I was treated like an inconvenience. Nope! I took my business to Apna Bazaar (on the same street, maybe a block away) where the service was fast and friendly! read more

I ordered garlic naan and palak paneer. I don't know why the reviews before me were so negative. Food was flavorful and HOT and it's cheaper than slot of the Indian places around here. It's worth trying. read more

I've been coming to this spot since they opened before they even began cooking, just to get candy and Indian soda. Their food is ON POINT, I'm no vegetarian but I could easily be one if I was eating this food every day. My personal favorite disk is palaak paneer, an Indian farmhouse cheese in a spinach gravy. The menu at the restaurant is very lengthy, and the prices are all on the low side. I have only tried a few of their items, but none of them disappointed. I was forced to take the majority of my orders home, because they are very generous portions. There is no way you would want something so delicious to go to waste. Make sure to check out the market. We were coming back from Bear lake and were craving something spicy and flavorful.We called the restaurant and were told they were vegetarian..We showed up at the restaurant and the host was super friendly and seated us. The place was spic and span , they had around 8-10 dishes , all of them very different and super flavorful. The navaratan kurma was creamy and full of veges, the shahi paneer had delicious gravy and just a small pet peeve was it could have a little more paneer but hey it was great.The chilli tofu was spicy full of ginger and great.The kadhi gravy had coriander-asafoetida and was as authentic as it goes. The gentleman manning the restaurant refilled the bread and water as soon as we were out.. Tried this restaurant last week and was impressed. Food is freshly cooked for each order so it takes a while. The owner is very attentive and goes over your order to make sure it is prepared exactly the way you want, ie spices, heat, desired veggies, etc. Never had someone do that before. I have been coming here for a few years to pick up desserts (rasmali... like a crustless cheesecake in a cardamom cream sauce, and gulab jamun... little donut balls soaked in a slightly sweet syrup)...first tried the buffet last month, back again today...they change it everyday. customer service is everything for business owners but their customer service is HORRIBLE!! The guy is extremely rude to the face and will ignore the people waiting in line to laugh with his buddy. Items are OVERPRICED! If you buy indian grocery on a regular basis there are other options in Stockton which have better service and prices. I usually go to the bay and stock up from the wholesale store. The potato fillers in their samosas smell like they have used bad potatoes and the oil in their fried food smells horrible. Worst customer service and the restauraunt that they have is not worth your money at all. I am really disappointed because as a local we want to be proud of what we have but this literally is an embrassment to our community. Ordered chaat and it was tasteless, cold and not how chaat even looks like. I talked to the owner and chef to have it changed since it was cold no recognition was given and they gave zero f****. It's never about the money because I was going to pay but to them money is EVERYTHING. Rather than apologizing they continued to say we were wrong and that's how it is supposed to be. Decided to go for Buffet lunch near my new place in Manteca. I was little bit under the weather as having mild cold and flu like symptom. Turns out Shan e Punjab buffet decision was perfect pick. Food was wonderful. My favorite Kadhi Pakora and Daal Makhani were both hot and delicious. Garlic Naan was fresh and hot. On top of this they have great setting with Dhaba style seating. Overall a wonderful experience. Not just I had buffet, I also ended up ordering some makki ki roti and Sarson ka Saag to go also. We found this restaurant by accident a few weeks ago and yesterday ate at Shan-E-Punjab for the first time. December of this last year we went to India for the first time for a few weeks. We stayed in Delhi, Varanasi, Khajuraho, Gwalior, and a few other places. While there we quickly learned the best food wasn't at the tourist restaurants but rather the road-side vendors and small local restaurants that many tourist are needlessly afraid of. The tourist restaurants are good but they're not that different than typical Indian restaurants in the United States. The food we loved was the Indian chaat. I have to say that Shan-E-Punjab's food is almost identical to the amazing food we ate in the narrow shop allies in Varanasi, along the roadside on the way to Gwalior and elsewhere. The food was fresh and prepared perfectly. This restaurant is a true gem in Stockton and the prices are excellent. If you're within a few hours it's worth the trip to experience true Indian chaat. This isn't a fancy restaurant. The interior is simple, a bit sterile looking but very clean. I could care less about the ambiance when the food is this delicious. The service was excellent and everyone working there was very friendly. I will be eating at Shan-E-Punjab every chance I get. In addition to the restaurant they have an attached Indian market with a huge selection of spices and ingredients to cook your own Indian meals. The prices on spices in the market are excellent compared to your regular grocery stores and I'd bet they're probably better quality spices. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants to experience true Indian chaat exactly as it's enjoyed in India. read more

Multiple times when I have came here, there is none there and I have to wait at least 15-20 minutes just sitting there. But then we went to lunch a couple weeks later and ordered some chaat, and we both got sick! This is a very good restaurant and grocery store that you can buy groceries. They also sell samosa chart and it is really good. Just try to remember do not order spicy if you're not used to it because it will really be spicy. They also have buffets during the day. The food here is consistently BOMB.COM! The shahipaneer is liquid crack, the buffet is always good and you cannot beat the price. Plus the customer service is friendly and warm. So I come here at 12 in the afternoon and speak to the lady who works here who is very nice and lets me know the western union system is down for an hour and to call back and see if it comes back up before I come back. I call back at 1:30 pm and she answers and tells me that it's come back up and I tell her I'll be there in 10 mins. I get there and the man who works there says "I can't do that for you it's going to take too long go somewhere else" and was so rude. I told him I had called the woman and she told me that she would be able to do it right now then why say that and then not be able to do it.. I just waited about 2 hours already. All in all, the man that works here is excessively rude. And I would say that just created a huge inconvenience for me for literally no reason. i am always on the lookout for awesome vegetarian places! i am a huge fane of indian food, in general, so it was my prerogative to try this place out. i stopped by shan-e-punjab before visiting my family. i liked the fact it was a few blocks away from my family's house, so i at least i was familiar with the area. i ended up getting an order of basmati rice and chana palak, 2 orders of naan, & 4 samosas for $16 bucks. such a good deal! the food is decently priced, flavorful, and had great portion size...i was able to share it with my brother and still have enough left over for next-day leftovers. shan-e-punjab will on my go-to places to eat whenever i visit my family... their samosas are HUGE! get them! read more

It was luncheon buffet time so I had to go to the dreaded buffet table but everything I put on my plate was hot. Two kinds of rice: basmati and lemon.
