Same here on Saturday with friends for the soup dumplings! I had actually noticed Shanghai Lounge several months ago when I stopped by Bistro Lepic (next door) for Restaurant Week, and wondered if it was legit or not. Turns out, the soup dumplings are awesome! They are a bit pricier and perhaps a smidge smaller than in other cities (ie. NYC/Boston), $9 for an order of 8. But I'm not complaining because I'm just happy to have found this place. The order took a while (~20-30 mins), but they were fresh and the broth inside was piping hot. Super flavorful on the inside, good amount of pork filling, and I loved the sweet soy sauce/vinegar dipping sauce on the side (I even dipped my cabbage into it and it was delicious). I also loved the decor--cute and much nicer than your usual Chinese joints. The bathroom downstairs was particularly cute. YUM! Can't wait to come back! read more

This is a cute location. Large groups might have a little bit of a problem but please don't let that deter you from going to this excellent restaurant. Inside is very quaint. I loved the decor. Not overly noisy. The hostess was very nice and attentive. There's plenty of street parking but be sure to read the signs. We had the Shanghai Steamed Pork Bun, Spicy Pork Wonton, Sweet and Sour Pork, Combination Fried Rice and Crispy Beef. All of which were bursting with flavor. The Crispy Beef was a little too crispy but still tasted good. You are porvided a good portion of food. Another thing I appreciated was the cost, it didn't break the bank. Will I return? Such a cute cozy gem! I came around lunch time on a Sunday, there were people in there already but we were seated immediately. Our waitress who may have also been the owner or manager was very friendly. She was very attentive and anticipated our needs. I ordered the beef pot which I was a little disappointed by because it wasn't very spicy and lacked some flavor but wasn't too bad. My friends dishes (shrimp and broccoli, chicken and broccoli) were much tastier. Overall it was a great experience. I would go back. read more

We dined here yesterday evening (4/20/18). We were looking for an upscale Chinese restaurant with good ratings and Shanghai Lounge was all I could find near me(smh). It's nowhere near upscale, but the service was was stellar. Jonathan was very prompt, he made recommendations for meals, we talked about China afterwards and where/when to visit, he was extremely friendly. This establishment seems like it is frequented by many students and regulars based on the conversations I overheard and the looks of the crowd. The prices also are great. Now the food....It was just okay. Not good, not great, just meh. I wouldn't go out of my way to dine here again. Why? I wasn't WOWED by anything I ate. Is it possible this is authentic Chinese food and I'm accustom to the Americanized version? Not sure....I haven't had Chinese food In years. I will say the portions were large and there was plenty of food to go round (we had leftovers,m). We ordered the shrimp rolls, salt and pepper prawns for Appetizers and the cumin lamb and kung pao chicken as our main dishes. The shrimp rolls were as thin as cigarettes (I'm not a smoker, I just know how thin they are, hahaha). The salt and pepper prawns, weren't impressive alone, but when eaten with the little morsels on the plate, they became flavorful. The cumin lamb needed salt. While it was soft, there were these tendons (stringy white stuff that reminded me of twine, lol) I could NOT chew, in almost every other bite. The Kung Pao Chicken was decent. It was not hot (even with two peppers) There were tons of big chunks of peppers and onions. I LOVE onions, but there were actually too many for me. Also, the peanuts didn't look like they were cooked with the dish (they were still very pale). I love peanuts, but they seemed like an after thought. On the other hand, my partners impression of this place was FAR different from mine. He would have given Shanghai Lounge FIVE stars and said he would go back. Custom service is a very important part of his dining experience. However, his order of importance is customer service, ambience, calibur of the guest (there were some intellectuals and one or two professors sitting across from us talking about dissertations, etc.), then food. How can food be last?!? I'm all about customer service, it's extremely important, but my palate just won't allow me to trump flavorfulness for it. read more

Went back for their general tso's and soup dumplings and they tasted even better than the last time! This time we tried their lomein in addition to the rest of the dishes and it was amazing! Our main waitress, Flo I believe, was honestly the nicest person I've ever met. So accommodating and welcoming. She really helped us decide on what to get since it was our first time. There were many regulars that happened to come in while we were there, and she knew their orders by heart, their names, asked about their families. It made me wish I lived here, just so I could be a regular. The food was very good, got the Kung Fu Mian, the beef was incredibly tender and the broth was great! We visited Shanghai Lounge during an especially frigid day. As soon as we entered, we entered an establishment ripe with conversation and sounds of flatwares scraping against dinnerware. It was loud, but not in the obnoxious way that a restaurant could sometimes be loud -- the loudness was restrained despite the crowd. The majority of clientele were of Asian descent and speaking in foreign tongues with one conspicuous European family in one of the tables. The demographic of the establishment cemented our confidence in choosing the restaurant. Our server exuded warmth and was attentive to our needs throughout our service. We had the steamed pork dumplings which were delicious, string bean with chicken (which was not seasoned enough for my Westernized palate -- although this is how authentic Chinese food is supposed to be) and the beef hotpot was okay. For drinks, my husband had hot sake and I had their house red wine which were both very good. I would definitely return for the service, the atmosphere, the price point, and to try additional options on the menu. read more

Love, love, love this place. The atmosphere is cozy, the staff is small and friendly (there is little to no turnover, and the food is amazing. As a regular, I've tried most everything on the menu and haven't come upon a single item that I did not thoroughly enjoy. My favorites: -Dan Dan Noodles -Soup dumplings -Spicy Green Beans -Spicy Pork Ribs But the absolute best dish they serve is not on the menu. It's the Szechuan Hot Pot. ORDER THIS!!! They have a table tent advertising this dish that warns it is really spicy. I think that may, unfortunately, deter people from trying it. (We declined to order it on our first two visits because the gf doesn't like spicy food. When I did order it for myself, she ate almost as much of it as I did.) This incredibly authentic dish offers a generous portion of Chinese veggies with your choice of meat. The sauce is incredibly flavorful; it's not nearly as spicy as advertised (my gf, who doesn't do spicy food, loves this dish), but the chef will gladly kick up the spice level for anyone who wants. Because this quaint spot is in the northern part of Georgetown (across from the Safeway), about a half-mile away from the heavy foot traffic of M St., it probably doesn't get the amount of business it deserves. Good news for those who have discovered this gem: it's fairly easy to walk in and get a table without a wait. If you're in Georgetown and want a fabulous meal in a quiet location (hard to find to in G-town) this is the place for you. read more

They have potential, but they need to stop cutting corners. Food quality is shotty. Sometimes fried rice has great flavor and full of veggies other times bland no flavor and literally can count he veggies on your hand. Sometimes the crispy eggplant is an appropriate thickness and is flavored great. Other times it's cut far too thin, over fried, and way too sweet. They just need to do better with consistency. I think they have new management not sure how much it's helping. read more

This is my second time here and different from last night, I was able to try some dishes rather than snacks and street food. # fish fillet in spicy source: my personal favorite and it is way better than that in Sichuan Pavilion. The fish fillet is fresh and flavorful # ma P.O. tofu: my other favorite. They use soft tofu instead of firm ones and it tastes so good # spicy pepper: didn't try that dish # Stir fried bok choy: you can never go wrong with this # hot spicy pot: personally I am not a big fan but the portion is huge # bean curds with meat: the meat does not seem very fresh # bamboo shots with meat: I love the bamboo shots which are fresh and seasonal. Same issue with meat # shanghai soup dumplings: we tried this for the second time but I am not impressed. If you have a car, venture out to JDS Shanghai. They have the best Bao! Solid food options. I'm surprised this place got such high reviews. It's decent, but it's Americanized Chinese food: - The XLB did not come with the traditional chendu black vinegar and shredded ginger. They served it with dumpling sauce. - The dan dan noodles were overcooked and the flavor was meh. - The cucumber salad was sweet. - The Sichuan style string beans didn't have enough Sichuan peppercorns. If you don't care whether or not it is authentic and flavorful, then I guess you wouldn't mind. This is some damn good Chinese food. My graduate program in Georgetown was 80% Chinese exchange students, so I asked them for advice on what was good Chinese food in the area. They directed me here, and that launched a quest to keep going with them to find more such restaurants. My fiancée and I have been many times, and it is always good. The decor is a little more upscale, which is nice, but it's still very affordable. We usually get the dumplings, and have tried some of the soups which are always good. The staff is super friendly. One time I went with my Chinese friends and they ordered for us, and I tried a bunch of things I'd never heard of before--and liked a lot of it even better than things I'd gotten on my own, which I already thought was good! I can't remember what we got specifically, but there was one spicy green bean dish that was great, and a spicy fish stew I loved. I would have never thought to order fish stews, but ever since going out with my friends, I've had a bunch and they are incredible. Definitely worth trying. Ordered delivery through Uber eats and was thoroughly impressed. I've had my fair share of crispy beef from different take out places, but none if it compares to what I got from Shanghai lounge. The crispy beef is crispy, with great texture. It wasn't soggy from the sauce and wasn't overly sweet. Usually crispy beef gets soggy in delivery but this stuff was on point and tasted delicious. Combination lo mein was really good, generous portion for the price. It's exactly what you'd want from a lo mein. They don't skimp on the meat. Finally, the steamed pork dumplings were amazing. Vege dumpling is vege dumpling, which wasn't bad. Ok crispy beef !!!! where should I start? Overall, this dish was not good at all. The crispy fried bread cover was way too thick, I couldn't even taste the beef (...trust me, I tried to search for the meat). just too thick. And the flavors were not balanced because it was way too sweet. Pineapple chicken had the same issue, the cover was too thick, meat a little. After all, tofu fish spicy broth was pretty decent. I recommend people who like spicy to order this or have something that is spicy. Overall, not a bad restaurant, still has some space for improvement. read more
