Pretty good Chinese food by D.C. standards! Came out here for the soup dumplings and they were just alright. They didn't have enough soup in them as I would've liked and were a little dry. However, it's tough to find really good soup dumplings in D.C. if you don't want to make the trek out to Rockville, so these are an ok substitute. Other dishes were flavorful and authentic and were prepared super fast - perfect for my impatient stomach! We got some sort of stir fry (I forgot exactly what it was) with pork and rice cakes in addition to the stir fried green beans that really hit the spot. We came here on a Friday night and the only available table was right by the door. With delivery people constantly coming in and out, it wasn't the best experience but we were thankful to immediately have a table for the 4 of us. read more

3.5 Stars After a few search on Yelp because the restaurant that we planned to go was closed, we decided to eat at Shanghai Lounge. They have good reviews and ratings so we decided to give it a try. The outside looks like a house, like the one in Full House. Maybe because it is in downtown/Georgetown. Inside, it is small like what we imagined and it still looks like a house inside. They have a second floor and basement (for bathroom). It looks outdated and is very dark. The server was pleasant. My only issue was when we asked him if the servings are "to share," he said it is only good for 1 person. In reality, 2 people can share the entrees. The highlight of our meal was the Crispy Shredded Beef. It was delicious and flavorful. The Vegetable Lo Mein was delicious as well and it is very different from the Chinese take out restaurants. The Mushroom Chicken was alright. It really doesn't stand out at all and was my least favorite. Shanghai Lounge reminds me of the many reasons why I like going to Chinese restaurants that is fancier than Chinese take out. I've been here before but came here most recently last Sunday. My husband and I went on a long run and ended here so we could order more food I really like this place--the food in my opinion is pretty authentic especially for southern Chinese style food. It's also one of the few places in DC that does the steamed soup dumplings. TBH I actually don't think the soup dumplings are anything to write home about--on the grand scale of soup dumplings, but it does the job. We got the 蚂蚁上树, the sweet and sour clear or cellophane noodles with pork. So yummy I love it and over-ate. We also got a Tsingtao beer We also ordered the Shanghai style rice cakes which remind me of home because that's close to how it's made in Taiwan (at least by my mom and grandma) and a soup noodle. To note, apparently the restaurant had changed management somewhat recently so they didn't have a few of the dishes on the menu when we were there. I had originally ordered the lamb soup noodles but they didn't have that and also didn't have seafood soup noodles. Our server made a great recommendation and had me try a soup noodle that has chicken, shrimp and pork with knife cut style noodles and tomatoes and greens. The soup was lighter which was right up my alley. Our soup dumplings were the last to come out. I had actually thought that they had forgotten them which I was okay with because we were so full from splitting 3 mains. But then they came out at the end and then I really overdid it. I showed my husband my belly by pulling my shirt tight and even he was a little shocked at how distended it was. But you got to do what you got to do. I want to come back here for the 麻辣香锅. Haven't had it yet here but I love that drypot Sichuan style stuff so hope it is good. Pretty solid Chinese restaurant in Georgetown. Also a good walk up Wisconsin though, so be ready to work for it! Was in the mood for some delicious Chinese food for lunar New Years. Lowkey the family day at the Kennedy Center was a flop for my boyfriend and I, but we were still in the mood for some amazing food, especially vegetarian. Praise for yelp finding Shanghai Lounge! The lady who works in the front is a wonderful host and very personable. Will definitely tell you what her favorites are if you're in a stump of what to get. Everything from the lukewarm, thick spring rolls to Lipton bag iced tea to overwhelmed staff trying to deal with takeout orders, reservations, and meal delivery services in a small space, it is painful to write this review. Mongolian beef has disproportionate amount of onions. The crispy eggplant has a hard shell of a batter. Sometimes I feel like picking some items may give the wrong experience at a restaurant that may thrive on other items. Why have we just met?! It certainly was SO lovely to be introduced to Shanghai Lounge. My brother took me here after we had walked and driven all over DC trying to find his iPhone from his drunken escapades from the previous night...Just in case you care, we didn't find his phone and he ended up having to drop several 100s of dollars to get a new phone. I told him to get a purse, so he can be more responsible for his phone going forward! Anyway...we walked in around 2pm on a Sunday and I quickly observed that this is a small restaurant. About 5 tables/booths and one high top table in the back. We were sat at the high top table. We got two waters. The water came with very little ice, so I got a glass of ice on the side. For our food we ordered, steamed shrimp dumplings, beef and broccoli (with white rice) and General Tso's Chicken (with fried rice). Let's start with the appetizer, the shrimp dumplings were absolutely delicious. Clearly, an angel made them in heaven! When I bit into the dumplings a flavorful sauce burst into my mouth and the texture of the dumpling and the shrimp was a lovely contrast. I could stuff myself with these as a sport. The General Tso's chicken was also delicious! The meat had a crispy exterior and a juicy interior, better than any take out. The fried rice was a bit too salty, but okay. My brother liked the beef and broccoli more than I did. He kept raving about it that I had to tell him to get a room. All in all, the food was fantastic, service was good and this is most certainly a place you should visit. read more

Craving Chinese food one night, we ordered the spicy fish with broth, beef dried hot pot, and the Farmhouse Pork. I love how they have dried hot pot on their menu as that is one of my ultimate favorite things to eat. Nothing like a mouth full of numbing spice without worrying about all the broth. I will say that I was a bit disappointed in both their Farmhouse pork dish which I honestly don't remember eating and the hot pot, which I didn't find spicy enough. This review is for dining in -- which I don't recommend if you have a group of more than 2. This restaurant prioritizes take-out over in-restaurant diners, and, fair warning, doesn't serve any alcohol at all. We came as a group of 10 with a 6 pm reservation and weren't able to leave until 8:30. The restaurant was empty other than our table, so it wasn't like they were slammed by both diners and take-out. The one waiter was very nice and funny, but would disappear for long stretches of time -- he was slow to take our entree orders which may have contributed to the wait. I hate to say this, but the kitchen pacing was really terrible it became clear to us that take out was being prioritized over our table. Two plates came out every 10 minutes. Specifically, one friend and I were the first to get our entrees a little after 7:30 (1.5 hrs after sitting down) and our friends at the end of our table didn't receive their plates until 8:15. We seriously wondered whether we'd get our orders faster if we ordered online and had it sent upstairs. :) The food overall seemed reasonably authentic to me, but I don't know a lot about Shanghai cuisine. I had been looking forward to the soup dumplings. The dough was nice but they arrived deflated, and true enough the interior was dry and had no soup at all. :( I ordered the chicken dry hot pot as my entree and it was missing half of the described vegetables -- the lotus root, potato, and green beans. It featured a fair amount of Szechuan numbing pepper but that's really all I tasted -- the flavor wasn't as complex as I was hoping for. On the plus side, I thought the side of crispy green beans was fantastic and I was glad to have ordered them, since they weren't in my hot pot. I think overall our group found the dishes to be fine but nothing special, with the exception of the walnut shrimp and the cumin lamb, which received good reviews but arrived dead last. I went to Shanghai Lounge for dinner and ordered the Walnut Prawn and the Combination Lo Mein. The prawns were very good and had a nice creamy flavor. The walnuts were a bit sparse, but a good complement. I liked that the Combination Lo Mein had different kinds of meats with the noodles (chicken, beef, and shrimp). The place was kind of crowded, which added to the noise level, but it was still okay for conversation. I noticed that on one of the walls, there are many photos of customers dining at the restaurant, which was a nice touch. The service speed was pretty quick and our waitress was friendly. Overall, Shanghai Lounge has good quality, decently-authentic Chinese food. It isn't that special compared to other similarly-priced Chinese restaurants though. I ordered Shanghai Lounge for delivery through UberEats. It was the most heavily suggested Chinese restaurant and the food did not disappoint but the price tag did. Despite the higher costs, my order was correct, well-packaged, and warm upon arrival. Hot and Sour Soup: The Hot and Sour Soup was the least impressive of the dishes I ordered. It was a little oily for my tastes and didn't have any of the strong flavors that I usually associate with Hot and Sour Soup. I would recommend choosing soup dumplings or other starters over this soup. Crispy Beef: This dish was delicious but only if you don't mind that it is heavy on breading and sauce. The sauce was sweet and a little spicy but very crunchy. Crunchiness and crispiness matters more to me than beef content, so I loved this dish. However, the price would usually warrant a greater amount of beef than what I received. Lo Mein (with vegetables): The Lo Mein was also just what you would expect from a good Chinese takeout restaurant. The noodles were chewy but came with hardly any vegetables, which was disappointing considering the price. Rice: I seldom give rice reviews but this rice was impressive. Chinese takeout rice is often dry and under-cooked and no one seems to care. This rice was very soft and sticky, more like what you would expect at a Korean restaurant (my favorite type of rice). I was pleasantly surprised. In conclusion, Shanghai Lounge was good but not incredible. It's quality does not justify its prices. In D.C., you can find Chinese food of similar quality at a cheaper price. read more

Chicken with mixed veggies - I was looking for something simple with veggies. Wish it had more vegetables or there was an option to order a side of veggies. Very salty. Scallion Lamb - Scallion or just regular onions? Lots of regular onions, lots of flavor but also a LOT of salt. The miso soup however did not have enough salt or flavor. The Thai tea does not taste like any normal Thai tea I've had or made. It's missing the flavors that the spices usually add to it. The green tea was good green tea. Tastes good with some milk. There were no utensils. We're staying at a hotel here and didn't have utensils :( Ended up getting some from the front desk. All in all, we'll keep searching for a good takeout place. The beef was good but the broth was just spicy and lacked actual depth of flavor. Stir fry string beans were good. General tsos was meh. Dumplings were good, we got shrimp and pork and the soup dumplings, however they came out last which was awkward. The service was nonexistent for us and unfortunately our waiters English was tough. Really flavorful! Now for the disappointment. The soup dumplings were not good at all. There's almost no soup inside and a lot of them had holes. When I did get a piece with a bit of soup, there was almost no flavor. The meat was kind of rubbery texture. Definitely would not recommend the soup dumplings. One of the best Chinese places I've been to in the DC area! As a Chinese-American who grew up in Potomac, I have been eating at Chinese restaurants in the area for as long as I can remember. For whatever the reason DC seems to be particularly lacking in good Chinese food compared to other American cities, and I'm not just talking about those on the west coast. My fiancé's grandmother is currently visiting from China and has been for the most part sorely disappointed with the Chinese restaurants in the MD/VA burbs, so we decided to take her to the city in an attempt to find more authentic cuisine. We came to Shanghai Lounge in a Wednesday evening at 5:30pm and were seated immediately. There was paid street parking nearby which becomes free after 6:30pm. They have English and Chinese language menus and the servers speak perfect English and mandarin, which really made my fiancé's mom and grandmother (both don't speak English) feel right at home! The service was warm and fast, and they even suggested a few other Chinese restaurants for us to try. Food (we used the Chinese menu so these may not be translated 100% the same as they appear on the English menu but if you ask the servers they should know what you're talking about): Xiao long bao - pretty good! Apparently the flavor is very reminiscent of a xiao long bao place grandma frequents in Beijing. There is not much soup in these baos and they're a little on the smaller side but the taste is good. I prefer my baos to be a little soupier like din tai fung's, but you can take it from grandma that these are indeed authentic! 4/5 Celery and wood ear - mmm! The sauce is very light and flavorful and the veggies taste fresh and crisp. These types of dishes have a tendency to wind up with the sauce too floury and the veggies soggy so we were pleased with this dish. 5/5 Spicy beef in broth - very tender beef pieces swimming in a pond of spicy oil! I only wish there were a few more pieces of beef or veggies inside. 4/5 Cold peanut noodle (x2, the bowls are small) - okay, nothing too special. We could have done without this. 3.5/5 Steamed fish w/ ginger - super tender and flavorful white fish fillets. These went fast! 5/5 Sweet & sour chicken - nice crispy batter but the chicken inside was a little dry and tough in some pieces. 3/5 We also got one Stella beer. For our group of four, seven dishes was perfect. We finished everything without leftovers and were very satiated. Both my fiancé's mom and grandmother said it was the best Chinese place they'd been to in the area. They serve smaller, higher quality portions than typical Chinese restaurants but I find their prices to be quite fair.
