Very disappointing. I am a long time customer, approximately 25 years and we used to love eating here. However, the last few years we have gone less and less as the quality of food has gone down hill. Last night I walked in and gave my name to pick up my order. The girl said it wasn't ready, I paid and let her know I would be standing out front if she could please let me know when my order is ready. After much time had passed, I walked back in to check on our order. The girl again asked my name and then gave me my order which was sitting on the counter. Was it so hard to open the door and ask for my name or hand me my order? It's not like she was busy, no one was in the restaurant. Needless to say, our dinner was cold when I got it home. One of our favorite dishes is their Crispy Beef, sadly, the last few years the meat has been stringy, chewy and dried out. Last night we avoided our favorite dish and ordered the Generals Chicken and Sesame Chicken. Turns out the chicken is also just as dried out and stringy. Both sauces tasted so similar of vinegar that it was hard to notice the difference between the two dishes, the chicken was only half covered in sauce leaving much of the dish to be just a deep fried pieces of chicken. The sesame chicken is supposed to be lightly fried, thus was not the case. The fried rice still showed a bunch of white rice. This is not a cheap place to order from and we ended up throwing away almost all of it. Unless something changes this will be our last time. read more

Tried this place for lunch and the food and service was great. Decor is a very nice Chinese/Japanese restaurant. Plenty of booths and tables. The waitress was very attentive and checked on us many times making sure we didn't need anything else or refills. I'd leave no stars if I could. I ordered $45 dollars of dumplings to go. Went to pick it up and they were ALL the same... went back after talking to a manager and told us they would fix the order and talk to the chef, get there and they tell us that what we ordered was the same thing?! It was just listed on the menu with different pictures.. I'm like no, I spoke to the manager on the phone and she even said herself that they messed up. Wellp I ordered 4 different things off the menu and apparently they are all the "same thing"..... I'd not been here for many years but I was taking my brother and SIL for lunch before they headed out to Laughlin and we ended up here. It was every bit as good as I remembered! We all loved our dishes! My brother got crispy noodles with pork and I got the walnut shrimp. My sis in law got pork chow mein. It's a no from me. I hate leaving bad reviews but I have no choice. The food was decent but the service is horrible. Our waitress ( didn't catch her name) was extremely unpleasant. She was so rude and acted like we were wasting her time when we had questions and we notice her being rude to her coworkers as well which was upsetting. Our friend told us to give this place a try and we did.... but we won't be returning. When we walked in (we went on Friday at 6:30p.m) there was one other customer there.. hmm don't think that's a good thing. Hostess was okay, could have been nicer forsure. We weren't sure if we wanted just Chinese food or sushi so we ended up getting both. I ordered the Donald Duck and my husband ordered the king king and the king roll. They were boring. When it comes to Sushi, this place does some right and some wrong! But the Quail egg Shooters!! Game is on point. It's not terrible sushi, I have had worst but for a small joint my biggest complaint isnt ti much the food but the wait time for preparation, I understand that some rolls are cooked an those are understandable but for being all you can eat, it seemed like I ate a roll and waited for about 10min to receive another, it was not busy there was my party of four not ordering a lot either and then like two guys at the other side then that was all. So unsure what the issues were, but for the most part it was okay for that. Service and quality, the staff are really nice and they do what they can with what they have to offer. The two guys behind making the rolls were pretty funny! As for the waitress she was very professional an prompt when getting drunk orders so was it bad service no not at all, but overall service would be a 8 out of 10. Quality of food, if they had better visualization on the menu on what the rolls looked like it be better for those whom want to see more then to read more. But for the food I'd give it a 6 out of 10. This place is located next to Smith's grocery and has two restaurants: Chinese and Sushi. My takeout order was bagged with care. One of the dishes had a lot of gravy so it was placed in a separate bag so it wouldn't spill. I ordered a mapo tofu which is usually on the spicy side and asked if it could be made without being spicy. It turns out it was so spicy that I almost couldn't eat it. This is not the place to go if you have food allergies or dietary restrictions. You need to let customers know if there is fish in vegetarian dishes. You can kill someone like that if they have an allergy. I ordered sautéed broccoli off of the vegetarian menu. In the menu description, it does not say there is fish sauce. I took one bite and it tasted like fish. When I asked the waitress if there was, she didn't know and had to ask the chef. They were nice about making me a new one without the fish. This place used to be our go-to for Chinese food in Sparks, but it's taken a really bad turn in the past 6 months. The last time I picked up dinner, the place didn't seem all that busy. I had called in 20 minutes prior with my order. As soon as I walked in the girl behind the counter told me that she put in my order wrong (without asking me what I ordered). I told her again what I had ordered, and she ran to the kitchen to have the staff make the order. I wasn't in a crazy rush, so I was fine with waiting 10 more minutes for my food. When I got home I found that they still got my order wrong for one of the items. What's worse was that the chicken looked under done, and everything seemed to have an "off" flavor. Always had great food and service here! My parents introduced us to this place a decade ago and we don't go anywhere else for Chinese. We do take out often too and the owner is always attentive and kind. We like the General's chicken (a Reed High favorite) and the beef with broccoli. Since I've been coming here for years, and continued my patronage throughout some less than stellar meals in the past, I've whittled down their menu to my absolutely favorite and most consistent menu items. Three of those items being: Beef Chow Fun (some of the best I've had in town actually), Pan Fried Potstickers, and Lettuce Wrapped Chicken. And those were the items I enjoyed during my most recent visit. I ordered takeout and when I arrived, they greeted me with my order. Shang Hai Chinese clearly has some cleaning issues that need to be addressed before I return. I have reported this as well to Washoe County Public Health. I ordered a large meal to go because we were celebrating a special occasion. The food was overpriced and mediocre. The sweet and sour chicken was barely cooked, and we ended up throwing it away. The sesame chicken was a little better. The Rangoons were also undercooked, although they tasted ok. The fried rice had a ton of onions, and not much of anything else. The chow mein was blah. The steamed rice and crispy sesame beef were very good. We also had vegetable egg rolls and pot stickers which were ok. Overall it was a disappointing meal and I probably won't go back.
