We have been eating here for a few years. We have never had any complaints, but after tonight, we are done. The evening began by the young hostess rudely snapping at the poor elderly woman in front of us to go and sit in a chair in the corner while waiting for her takeout order. I understand COVID policies necessitating customers waiting in certain areas , but those things can be communicated in a profesional manner.... brattiness isn't needed. She continued by berating us for not having a reservation while seating us in an empty restaurant. After seating us, she stormed off as though we had offended her with our presence. I highly considered walking out at that point, but it was late and we were hungry. The waitress, while harried, was friendly and doing her best, which is the only reason for the two stars. The food wasn't the best, but it was Christmas Eve and I tried to enjoy it and be gracious about the off-the-hook mean hostess, figuring she was probably stressed about the takeout orders she was getting and maybe unhappy about working Christmas Eve or having personal problems in her life. That flew out the window and I walked out of there disgusted anyway after gagging on an extremely long, black hair in my chow main. That hostess needs to an attitude adjustment, and fast, before she loses a good portion of loyal customers, and please have your kitchen staff wear hair nets. read more

My family and I were looking for something to eat, and stumbled upon this gem! My husband wanted Chinese and my daughter and I wanted sushi. The food was quite good and the service was also very good. Nice people, comfortable atmosphere. We ordered Chinese ala carte and shared at the table, and the amount of food was more than adequate and tasty. The fried beef and walnut prawns were excellent, the Hong Kong noodles okay. Unfortunately, we didn't get to the sushi bar but we will definitely be back and will try it next trip. Overall, the restaurant is a very good neighborhood Chinese restaurant and I do recommend it. We ordered take-out thru Yelp via GrubHub the night before leaving on our last vacation, Sunday 1/26/20. We ordered hot & soup soup, sesame chicken, house egg foo young, and 2 side salads, and a spicy tuna roll. The soup was simply average, the sesame chicken was pretty good, the egg foo was decent although the gravy was very, VERY salty, and the side salads were awful! Their house dressing tasted like just jarred creamy peanut butter & soy sauce mixed together. They forgot my spicy tuna roll, and when I got home (in spite of asking the hostess "is this everything?") and realized it was missing, I called to inquire and was told I'd have to take it up with GrubHub on the app to get my money refunded. I told her I ordered thru Yelp, and she said I'd have to come back to pick up the roll. So, it was my problem, apparently. Offering house credit would have been a nice way to ask for my return business for their error. It's near my house, but it doesn't seem like it would be my regular go-to for takeout. read more

They serve pho now at Shanhai restaurant. It's a bit spendy but I liked it. I would recommend it to others. The broth is a little darker but the taste if fine. Amazing service. Great quality sushi! Such a nice hidden little place! We came here once before and same deal, amazing food & service. Favorites of mine are always the cooked rolls and they do not disappoint! I love Godzilla and 007. The boyfriend loves the mountain and the hulk. Also the border! The menu has very different rolls from every other sushi place. Making it very enjoyable to browse the menu and find something new every time! The chefs prepare everything promptly and the presentation is on point. The chef's are friendly and talkative making the atmosphere very enjoyable. This little hole in the wall place has won our vote for one of the best sushi places in town! The place itself has tons of seating and another side for Chinese food. But they allow you to order Chinese at the sushi side anyways. They have lots of specials. Mon - Thurs. $13 for all you can eat!! Only $16 for dinner. Beats every other place in town. Fri - Sat. Wow. Been coming here since probably I was in my teens. I used to come here during lunch when I went to the high school located right across. Not sure who owns this place now but WATCH OUT for the hostess, she is probably in her early 50's, definitely looks like a Karen, and acts like one too. She could use some phone etiquette. Rude over the phone when I placed my order. She may be the new owner cause she wasn't wearing safety nets or whatever. She looked like she just got 'dolled' up at a salon, or something. She definitely look like she don't belong there nor she wanna be there. She definitely need some work on her attitude. As I was picking up my order, there was someone waiting ahead of me. 'Karen' grabbed both of our orders and handed mine. I checked the bag, no soy sauce or whatever, did not ask if I needed anything else. She was rude to me. Meanwhile while she was handling the food to the older lady who was waiting before me, she asked if she needed utensils, soy sauce, all that she bang she could have asked me too. I had to ask for mine. There was an elderly couple who we're waiting to be seated, and she said 'are you here for Chinese food?' WELL DUH KAREN, isn't this a Chinese Restaurant named Shang-Hai? Or do y'all sell tamales here as well? I cannot anymore with this Karen. Anyway, as she sat them down while I was putting the soy sauce packets I've asked for in my bag, I saw her just threw the menu on the table.. and again, lacking customer service skills. Ya might as well just be a Karen than a Karen trying to have customer service. Probably won't order here anymore. Welp, not that I matter or anything. This place has dramatically gone down hill, it's so sad we really used to love it. Not only has the food quality gone down but they recently rehired on a manager that apparently worked there years ago(the sushi chef filled us in) who is the loudest most obnoxious woman I have ever witnessed in my life. Literally yelling across the dining room from chef to host, and host to server ect. Not angry yelling, that's just how she talks, with only a few guests in the place, no class. Very unprofessional and rude. Like I said, the food quality has gotten worse and if we have to stop coming here so that I never have to be in that womans presence again when I'm paying to enjoy a relaxing meal, then so be it. We ordered through DoorDash and while getting our food was delivered quick the actual food was horrible! The chicken dishes had so much sauce and oil they were soggy. The pot stickers had a ton of oil sitting in the bottom of the container so they were dripping oil and we didn't get my hot and sour soup. We didn't even eat the meal. It all went in the trash after a couple bites besides the egg rolls. There was a waste of $35. Panda Express would have been better and that saying a lot. read more

I want to thank most of the staff here for putting up with my family. I had a party of eight, including 2 kids. Four of us did ayce sushi, 2 had family style Chinese, and the little one ate a la carte. The food was good! The first chef was really nice and came and took our order, which was admittedly huge. When it came out it was glorious and everything was delicious and the rolls were well prepared. I would recommend that they send the rolls out as they're made instead of all at once, because we were all ravenous and anxious to get the food after the long wait. Maybe that's just my personal preference though. In his defense, he made everything all by himself and we had ordered probably ten rolls and nigiri as well. The boys got Chinese, and while their spareribs came out ice cold, the server had no problem taking them back and sending them out hot. They had no complaints about their meals and ate wayyyy more than they should have. I tried the beef broccoli and it was perfect! When we were all too stuffed for dessert, the lady put our ice cream in to go cups. Did we just become best friends?! The one thing that turned me off about this place was the second sushi chef. Again, the first guy who came to serve us, and turned out to be our chef, was awesome and I thank him for putting up with my mom. But other than coming to drop off plates, nobody really came to follow up or refill drinks. When we wanted to put in a second order sheet, I had to go find the chef. At that time, the other chef, who had five or six people at the bar, was visibly annoyed. As I walked away, the first chef told him, "this is just a small order, from the Chinese side." And he snaps back from five yards away from me, "WELL THEY CAN WAIT!" Okay then. Super turned off by that guy but maybe he was just having a bad night. One of the hidden gems in the Reno/Sparks for authentic Szechuan cuisine. While they do a good job with the usual Americanized Chinese favorites and have a sushi bar next door, they also offer authentic Chinese fare. Make sure to ask for the authentic Chinese menu (dish names also printed in English). Some of my favorites include the dry fried string beans (gan bian si ji dou), the seafood tofu soup, husband and wife platter (fuqi feipian), dry fried fish in peppers (gan pian yu). You also can't go wrong with any of their hot pots. It's definitely one of the few places to get authentic Chinese food in the Reno area. The good portions are very generous for the price. read more

My grandma was really craving Chinese food so I suggested Shanghai. We went there at about 6pm on a Sunday. When we got there it wasn't busy at all. So we were sat quickly. My grandmother ordered the house fried rice, which she loved. She ate and had her leftover boxed up and we sat there waiting for another 5-10 minutes before my lettuce wrapped chicken was even brought out. There was no explanation as to why my food took so much longer than hers, no apology. I think they just forgot to make it. We received the check about two minutes after I got my food. On May 1, 2013 at 8 p.m. I tried to use a Restaurant.com coupon. I don't often use coupons, but this was the only Chinese restaurant on their list and I had a credit to use. Now, I will tell you the story of the dramatic restaurant owner and the girl who didn't get any food. Upon entering I noticed that at dinner time,there was only 4 tables eating and two people waiting for pick up. I grabbed a menu since no one was around and made my choices for take out. Choices made, I ordered, and the total was between $19.74-$19.94. I presented my $10 off an order of minimum of $15 coupon and the show began! I was first told that I didn't make the $20 minimum, I showed him that the coupon said $15. He then showed me other coupons that said minimum of $20. First of all, I don't care what the other coupons say, mine coupon says $15. Then came the groans. "This is terrible, this is not good for business, no. no. no." After the groans I was told the concerns that he would not make any money off my coupon and how was he going to survive. Second, I don't care, this is between his business and Restaurant.com, I've made my order, I want to use this stupid coupon, go home and eat. I was then told that I needed to purchase something else to make it past the $20 to get the discount. Yeah that was not going to happen. Does that make sense to you? Some guy gives you a performance and wastes precious eating time, and you should give him more money. I said No. I was then told to come back when he figures this coupon out with Restaurant.com. No, No, No, I don't want to come back. Your customer service is terrible and you have shamed me in front of the take out customers. So Shanghai Restaurant, I bid you adieu. I don't think you understand that in a saturation of Chinese restaurants, customer service is very important. I don't think you understand how coupons work either. If someone likes your restaurant, they will come back and pay full price. I don't think you understand that it is not okay to call a woman "sweetheart", when you are telling her you are not going to honor her coupon. Finally Shanghai Restaurant, I think your survival in the restaurant business will soon be short lived, because you don't understand how to run a restaurant. read more

At the risk of sounding like a total bitch I have to post this...and it pains me. Until this happened- this place was actually our favorite sushi place. We used to come here at least twice a week. My favorite was the M.G. Roll (no avocado of course), the hamachi was always fresh and yummy. The chefs knew us by name and began preparing our 'usual' the second we walked in. I had been telling everyone how great it was, and had decided to bring my Mother and sister for lunch. We sat at a table towards the back, and everything was going great until they brought our crab rangoon appetizer. We LOVE crab rangoon. I ate mine quickly, so did my Mom. My sister, however, ate hers in slower bites. Upon biting into her first piece she looked at the inside to see what they had put into the rangoon. She leans over and asks me WHAT this black chunk thing was. It was about the size of my pinkie fingernail. After carefully examining the thing, we realized it was a bug. A big bug! We all started gagging at the realization of what that meant. In order for that bug to be inside a rangoon, it would have had to fall or climb into the mix, get scooped up and placed there and then deep fried. YUCK! Now, I realize that even the cleanest kitchens can have something happen- I've never seen their kitchen so I can't comment further. But in my opinion if this happens in your establishment- then you should probably comp the customers meal. But nope, not here. We pointed it out to the owner- he saw the bug for himself and offerred no recourse other than he wouldn't charge us for the appetizer (we were a la carte)This was extremely disapointing to me, as he knew that I was a 'regular'. Needless to say, we were not happy! Since we had already eaten a roll each by the time they had brought the rangoon- he felt that we should pay the bill, minus the rangoon. Apparently bugs in our food did not entitle us to a free roll of sushi. Sushi, that we would NOT have eaten had we seen the bug first. Another side note: Be wary of the sauce they put on everything. At first it tasted like Unagi Sauce, which we loved. But it had progressively began getting worse and saturating everything in it, is just icky. It became more bitter and had a cloying aspect to it. I heard some people remarking how good the sauce was, but it was not what it had been before. So if the chefs are reading this- whatever change you made to the sauce- is another reason why we don't come in anymore. It's possible that we'd have still given them another chance had they handled the bug incident better. This was our favorite place and we sang their praises and helped increase their business. It appears that we did that to our own detriment, because the quality and service went down in as they got busier. Bummer. read more

I think I was disappointed because in comparison to other places in town, Sushi House is pretty mediocre. The rolls weren't terrible but they weren't really something I would look forward to either. The two chefs working were both nice but one of them kept cursing which is pretty unprofessional in my opinion. Two stars given because the chef that cursed a lot made a special roll for my friend which she said really liked and they offered green tea ice cream. So bad... We have eaten here before, and I think having good service really helped, but this night, it was bad all the way around. First of all, there is a reason the AYCE price for the sushi is less than all the other places in town. The rolls are all drenched in a sickeningly sweet sauce. Every single roll. Some of the rolls were a little dried out and tasted fishy. Most of the nigiri wasn't bad...but some pieces were cut so sloppily and then slapped on top of the rice. There was just no pride in presentation. It should be about taste...but if I go out to eat, I expect a minimum of effort. My husband doesn't eat sushi so he ordered from the connecting restaurant, Shang Hai. Now we've eaten the Chinese here and my sister orders take-out regularly. It's usually at least decent. Egg drop soup comes out and looks gelatinous. I don't know if they were having a bad night or what...but it was the crappiest Sesame Chicken I have seen in my life. It is apparently the Reed High Student Favorite. But it was no one's favorite that night. The breading and the chicken were all separated. It tasted decent, but because the batter wasn't actually on the chicken, it gave it a wierd texture that completely ruined the dish. When they brought it out, my husband thought it was the wrong dish and my sister looked at it and said it was the wrong dish. Except you could see sesame seeds floating in it. Wow. Then the waitress. She was completely clueless. She brought us to the table and left us with ONE sushi menu for FIVE people eating sushi. Then when we asked her for a few more, she argued with us and we had to convince her that we needed the extra menus so we knew what the hell we were ordering. Wow. Then she brought us the wrong order and we told her so she could make sure the table whose order it was would get their correct order. It was the table right next to us. She nevered went over to tell them or apologize and she just looked really confused when we told her what happened. Somebody else ended up telling the next table over they got the orders mixed up. Then our order took forever to come out. Basically, the whole night, she looked confused, and just never tried to make us feel better about the wait. So many tastier places. We were driving along Sparks Blvd to go get some dinner and on the corner, there was one of those dancing Sign Wavers letting everybody know about the $14.95 All Day special that Sushi House was promoting. We were actually heading to another destination for dinner, but that guy sold us. Sushi sounded way better and at $14.95 for AYCE sushi dinner, why not? I totally forgot about Sushi House, since it's tucked in the corner of the Smith's shopping center right across the street from Reed High School. We came here a couple of times when they first opened, but with all the new sushi joints around town, they kind of fell off the radar. Damn glad that dude was waving that sign though. The sushi here is pretty good. They have a ton of different rolls here and the fish was fresh enough, but what really sets them apart from the rest of the sushi joints are their extensive appetizers menu. They even offer the same potstickers that are from the Shanghai restaurant which is a really good Chinese restaurant that is conjoined to this Sushi bar. Even though they're connected, they are and feel like two separate restaurants. The chef was recently transplanted from Sushi Pier 2 so he knew how to make good sushi. And to top it off, they include Green Tea ice cream as one of their dessert options include in the AYCE price. Green tea helps with the digestion of all the sushi gorging and was a perfect end to the meal. The $14.95 deal for the dinner menu is only good from Monday to Thursday though. It worked out because it wasn't too busy. We'll definitely be back. read more
