I've been to S&B a handful of times and it's definitely on the pricier side for when it comes to Viet food in SD. Their spring rolls are pretty standard, nothing super exciting, but their pho is usually what makes the experience great. We've tried their filet mignon, round eye, short rib, and chicken pho. The beef pho broth is significantly better than the chicken broth, in which the chicken broth really lacks any flavor. The beef phos are what I would recommend and I like how they give you the option of flat or thin noodles. My only concern is that every time I go the service is really slow. Got takeout from Shank & Bone the other night for the first time and it was good, and I think I'll try other places in the future. - shrimp & pork spring roll - 4/5, definitely the largest sized spring roll I've ever had at any Vietnamese restaurant to date, two pieces that were a third larger than most other places. The inside was great, the rice paper roll a bit hard/thick, so that part wasn't as good. The dipping sauce could have been more peanut forward for my taste. - surf & turf bun bowl - 4/5, it's hard to describe the pork part of this bowl, almost like thick pressed pieces of congealed meat cut into slices and topped with crushed peanuts. I kept taking bites because I couldn't decide if I liked it or not but in the end decided not. I really prefer grilled thin slices of flavored pork in my pork bun bowls and this was not it. The three pieces of grilled shrimp were just okay, a little on the small side (I'd say medium sized shrimp) and a little dry. We tried this at taste of north park and loved the sample, so I was excited to finally have the full dining experience. I was a party of 2 walk in early on a Friday night and it was already decently busy though we got a table no problem. Menus were QR codes unless you requested a physical menu - I personally prefer physical menus so it was nice to still have that option. The pho broth was good but you do have to add veggies, eggs, etc all individually so I felt like it added up quickly. I opted for chicken and liked the broth but I thought the chicken was tough. My friend got the pork and really enjoyed it, along with a Thai tea. The wait staff was extremely friendly and when the table next to us had an issue, the staff addressed it immediately. Shank & Bone is among the popular restaurants in North Park. Located on University and a block from 30th. Metered Street parking only. The restaurant layout offered both indoor and outdoor seating. I always prefer basking in a little sunshine to get my dose of vitamin D and sat outside with my pup Fendi. The table I sat had a great view of the North Park sign for background pics. However, all outdoor seatings are exposed to the exhaust fumes from the busy traffic and the bus stop right out front, I knew I would not stay long. The restaurant offers their version of Vietnamese foods, most notably Pho, a Vietnamese soup. I've had my share of pho but I am always on the hunt for the best. Even though I wanted to try the vegan pho, I need to increase my collagen intake and so I ordered the beef bone broth pho soup sans noodles to make it gluten and carb free. The waitress was nice but uninformed about some of the menu item details. I noticed the menu offered a kids menu with half the portion which would have been perfect for Me but the waitress quickly said I was not allowed to order. My quick reply was, I was going to order more items like the sugar cane with shrimp on the stick and veggie spring rolls, but since I couldn't order a smaller portion of pho, cancel the other items. Also, if I ordered from the kids menu togo, they can't prevent that! I never finish a bowl of pho and a smaller portion is what I wanted as NOT to be wasteful. Hesitantly, I ordered the simplest pho soup with the beef bones. The wait for my simple order took longer than reasonable time and I informed the waitress, that I have an appointment and cannot wait longer. 2 minutes later my bowl of soup was presented by another staffer. The bowl had two Brontosaurus size beef bones with bone marrow. The bones occupied so much space I couldn't even put my soup spoon inside. I was not comfortable dealing with these hugh bones, it would be too laborious and messy. The bones had some tender meat, the fatty bone marrow as well as lots of glutenous tendons, which I'm NOT a fan of. FYI the meat, tendon and fatty parts happen to be what collagen is made of, but I will stick to taking the pill form! After tilting the bowl, I manage to taste the broth, which was phenomenal. The taste of star anise and other herbs was flavorful, wholesome delish, but could have been served piping hot and not warm so the taste of this Bone Broth alone deserves 4.5 stars! I didn't feel comfortable eating this bowl with all the bones, so I promptly asked for togo packaging. Also, didn't like the outdoor elements of the traffic exhaust and countless number of lookey-loos and sadly many homeless people passing by. The interior of the restaurant was decorated modernish but did NOT appear clean, lots of debris on the floor and surfaces, which is a major faux pas. The pho here is very good and authentic. I'm glad to see two pho noodle options, the flat noodle or the normal thin ones. The pho bowls are served fully loaded plated in the bowl and the server comes and pours the pho broth into your bowl. Everything was very fresh. I had the pho tai and the pho S&B. The S&B comes in a bigger bowl to accommodate all the meats. It was worth the price. I also ordered the chicken egg rolls. It was okay, i am used to pork egg rolls. I saw that they also offered Ca Kho To, which is catfish in a clay pot and i was so excited i ordered it Togo. I was a little disappointed to see the cat fish portion was so small. Shank and Bone - A Bone Marrow Lover's Paradise For New Year's, my craving for bone marrow was through the roof, and Shank and Bone in North Park was my obvious choice. This spot has consistently delivered, and last night was no exception. We started with the Saigon Chicken Wings (6 per order), and they were everything I hoped for--crispy, with a perfectly balanced fish sauce glaze that was spicy, sweet, and savory all at once. It's the kind of dish that sets the tone for the rest of the meal. Next came the Roasted Bone Marrow & Bánh Mì Crostinis. The marrow was beautifully roasted, rich, and indulgent, paired with a cilantro chimichurri that added just the right amount of brightness. The crostinis were the ideal vehicle for scooping up every last bit--it's a must-order. For our main dishes, we went all out. The Signature Phở is hands-down one of the best bowls of phở I've had. Loaded with shank, oxtail, eye of round steak, flank, brisket, and even bone marrow, it's a carnivore's dream. The broth was flavorful, aromatic, and comforting--exactly what phở should be. We also got an extra small broth on the side, which was such a great addition for slurping through the meal. Then came the Brisket & Bone Bánh Mì. It was a showstopper--Snake River Farms wagyu smoked brisket, layered with cilantro chimichurri, Viet pickles, culantro, jalapeño, and mayo, all sandwiched in a crispy, light baguette. The side of bone marrow for spreading made this sandwich over-the-top decadent. Initially, we were planning to order the Shank & Bone Bowl (bone marrow and bones with beef broth, no noodles), but they were unfortunately out for the day. No worries though--what we had was more than enough to satisfy our cravings. The service was spot-on, as it always is. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed. The ambiance is casual and welcoming, with a perfect mix of traditional Vietnamese flavors and a modern North Park twist. Was in North Park and was feeling like pho. Found Shank & Bone on Yelp and it looked pretty good, so we stopped by. I love these new pho restaurants that don't just feed you the same old menu, but actually give you some real quality. Had the Signature Pho S&B, which somehow both has oxtail AND bone marrow. This is definitely some of the best pho I have had anywhere. The meat was plentiful and came off easily, the broth was fantastic, and the noodles were on point. Plus I saw short rib as an add-on, but this was actually real short rib with a substantial amount of meat. Absolutely worth it. Service is fine, no complaints from me. I had really high expectations for their pho due to the reviews, and I was not disappointed. Their pho is probably the best thing on their menu (I would hope so, since that's what they specialize in). I was expecting extremely high prices, however, I don't think they charge that much higher for their pho than other generic Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego. The price for some of their sides and appetizers, though, is a little outrageous. A lot of their dishes are a bit too simple to be charging the price that they do, hence the 4 stars rather than 5. I do love the presentation of their food items, though. They find a way to make classic Vietnamese street food dishes look more elevated with their plating style, though I do not think that this justifies the higher price tag, nor does the flavor. I really like Shank. We (or just me sometimes) tend to go there if we're going to a show at the Observatory across the street, because it's in easy walking distance. It's an upscale hipster version of the typical hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese eatery. Four stars because it is delicious, but a little pricey. Hopefully I can get one of the mini booth seats, because the other seats are those annoying brightly-colored metal new-style motel chairs that are all the rage (which baffles me, because in no way are they comfortable). Came for a weekday lunch and was pleasantly surprised! I ordered a grilled pork banh mi (without cilantro) and my friend ordered the classic spring rolls. If you're looking for non-traditional in a lively atmosphere .. this is your place. The decor is a mixture of vietnam lite and urban. Every song that pumped through the speakers was Lively and made you feel like it was the weekend. The service was fairly average, nothing too impressive but it got the job done. The pho rather average; the broth was kind of muted and not very vibrant, there were no traditional offerings of various spice on the table, and our vegetables were not very fresh. The area that really affected my score was the price. Although they have some creative offerings like smoked wag you, i find that $26 for your smaller is a little strep. There are many establishments in San Diego where you can have pho at a fraction of the price with better quality and more robust flavors. If you got money to burn and you're going to be drinking in the area, give it a try, but all in all I would say pass on this one. read more

Stopped by for a quick because I was looking for something quick to eat. Wanted to try this place again because the last time I came I felt it was good but just a hype. Tried the shank and bone pho that came with a HUGE bone that you have to cut the meat off yourself which was definitely interactive. The broth was very light and hearty but packed with so much flavor. I didn't even need to add any condiments except just a hint of lime to balance out the sweetness in the soup. Also got the banh xeo tacos which was pretty good as well. Small and crispy with lots of ground meat and shrimp inside but they added a lot of daikon too which I guess made it seem like there was more. The nuoc mam was good too, just a little too sweet for me though. I can see why this place is popular. A little expensive but it's worth a try. I'll start off by saying this vietnamese place is very modern and the interior is super cute. However, I've noticed that modern and clean viet places usually do not have the same taste as traditional Vietnamese restaurants. Granted I am a total viet food snob since I lived in Orange County and am blessed with a family that makes home cooked viet meals growing up. Bánh xèo tacos (3/5): I had the highest hopes for this one bc I love how mini these are compared to regular bánh xèo so the concept is cute but ultimately, I felt kinda meh about it and so did my friends. Pho fries (2/5): my bf chose to order this to share w the group and honestly... we could've gone without it. Fries and bean sprouts and hoisin sauce don't really work well together in our opinion... but the idea sounds cool in theory? Goi cuon/Spring rolls (3.5/5): tbh spring rolls at any viet restaurant taste the same to me. Not the biggest fan of their peanut sauce because it was too sweet for my liking but their nước mắm sauce is A1!! Pho cuon (5/5): The highlight of our meal! I've never heard this dish called pho cuon bc there's a similar viet dish to this that's called something else (can't think of the name atm). Highly recommend! All the ingredients and seasonings go so well together. Pho broth (3/5): Not the worst pho broth I've tried but not the best either. Noodles were Al dented so if you like Al center noodles then you'll like their pho. I like mine more on the soggy side but that doesn't affect the rating.
