I truly hesitate to write this review for fear of Shannon's getting the dreaded "Yelp effect" and becoming over-run with commoners. It's lovely. The owner, wait staff, bartender-- everyone. Lovely. I'm from Glen Ellyn originally, and live in LA now. Yet my wife and I make it a point to visit Shannon's whenever we visit family back home. They've really done an excellent job making it feel so warm and familiar, almost like something out of a Tolkien story. Food: the Chicken Cottage Pie is fab, as is the Fish and Chips. Not so keen on the Guiness-cooked shrimp, but what do you expect? It's pretty niche. The beer garden in the back is great for families with kids. read more

Well I wasn't impressed. Food was blah, nothing special, the fish sandwich was just fish sticks piled on a hamburger bun, our potatoe skins were lacking potatoes and toppings. It was more like half a potato with a sprinkle of cheese. The service was just OK and there was a very rotten smell coming from the hallway near the restroom. I've given up on the service here. It has only gotten worse over the time. It's not so much unfriendly as it's just not friendly. Or efficient. Or done with a smile. Or a thank you. And the prices are too high now. And there aren't enough TVs. Guinness is legit though. Bar selection is still good. Tap selection is still decent. Wine selection is still poor. Have you ever been in a relationship where you choose what's for dinner and where you go all the time? Yea, well that's us... Where do you want to go? I don't know, where do you want to go? Ultimately, I always decide! Until the boy finally decided! Whoa! He picked an Irish Pub not far from us, go figure! The menu fit both of our tastes, easy enough! They weren't too busy, but they were super slow to get menus. Apparently, there aren't enough to go around... So, we had to wait, and wait, until someone finally gave their up! Several people wandered by us, in the corner, looked at our table, and left, before someone finally came by with menus to help us! It was pretty silly! We ordered drinks and then reviewed the menu sorta afraid nobody would come back! Luckily, our waitress was super nice and came back! I had the Steak and Mushroom soup which was really good! The steak bits were tendered and paired nicely with the beefy flavor of the mushroom! The boy had the Corned Beef and Potato soup. He really liked it, but I felt the consistency was a little weird. It was like a loaded potato soup sub the beef instead of bacon and cheese. The flavor was good though! We read that they have a butcher shop that makes all their meats, so we ordered the Starter Bangers with mustard and rye bread. The bangers did not disappoint! You could tell they were fresh made by the snap of the casing. The rye bread was soft and fresh too! For dinner, I had the Fish and mashed potatoes - instead of chips. There were a few pieces of fish and it was pretty good. The potatoes and gravy were just average. They boy had the BBQ Burger. He is a burger fiend. This was an ok burger, but not in his top list by any means. We had leftovers for lunch the next day for sure! We will probably be back, but we'll keep certain things in mind... I had the best order of Fish and Chips, in a long time, here. I don't really eat fries, and so this was no exception, but the fried fish tenderloins were thick, hot, and tender, but not dried out (I don't want to say juicy, but the correct term eludes me.) The battered coating was perfect, it had layers of crispiness, but never a hard crunch. And it went perfectly with the Franziskaner beer we ordered. Our daughter also liked the Mac and Cheese, but an adult stealing bites of it may be wishing for more on that front. We also enjoyed the outdoor patio, luckily with a nice shady spot. read more

I've been to Shannon's a few times. I'm Irish. And I just can't get enough of that corned beef and cabbage. However I could probably due without the little ramekin of melted butter they bring you with your meal (because I tend to dip every single potato in it!) I see some of the other reviews complaining that it's not authentic Irish. And I agree. But honestly, did I expect to be transported back to the homeland when I entered their doors? No. I like to sit outside in the back in the permi-tent next to the fireplace. I haven't been there yet in the summer but I hear they take off the enclosure and you can sit in the fresh air. I can't wait to check that out! The staff is friendly. The atmosphere feels like a hometown joint. I will continue to visit. I went for a 40 mile bike ride and this pub was at the halfway point. I had the chopped salad which was large and pretty good - nothing to write home about. I sat at the bar. The service was inattentive and not particularly friendly. I had a Harp with my meal and asked for water twice but never got one. It was 90 degrees so the water would have been nice before riding home. There are better Irish pubs out there. read more

I begin my review with a caveat: I'm of Irish descent so I'm susceptible to liking Irish pubs more than I should. And Shannon's is quite like the pubs in Ireland, unlike many so-called Irish pubs in this area, so I like it even more. But, I think even the non-Irish (poor souls) would like this place. It has a homey feel to it and the food is better than what you'll find at most pubs, and it's reasonably priced. Plus, they know how to poor a draft there, which is always appreciated. The service staff is young so make sure they understand what you want and call ahead for seats because it's not very large place, although the cozy atmosphere adds to Shannon's charm. Solidly ok. The food is good the service is intermittent. I like it some days and other times not as much. My last experience was with the Ruben sandwich and the 5 year old for a Monday lunch. The bartender served us and was friendly. The food was adequate. The child's food was well priced and he enjoyed it. An update on Shannon's is that there is nothing much new! Another business lunch. Another mostly empty restaurant. Another super slow service. A couple of us had to leave before we got the bill, after arriving about 12:10, ordering and eating, then ready to go around 1:10. A one hour business lunch with maybe 3-4 tables in the entire restaurant, and still no bill?! I know it was paid by those who stayed, but it was another 15 minutes after us that they got into the office. This time, too, the orders were a bit loose. Some were accurate while others not. They fixed the problems right away, though. To their benefit, again a great side salad! Reuben was much better than before. Yelp, you nailed it. Shannon's Irish Pub is just "A-Ok." My friends and I were bar hopping in Glen Ellyn this past Saturday for St. Patrick's Day. You would think that being an "Irish" pub you may have jazzed it up and put out some more decorations? I mean the bartenders in green sparkly wigs were okay, but that was as festive as you get? I would think that you'd be going all out celebrating heritage. No? Eh. . I was part of a large group of friends, and we were all standing huddled around a single pub table. Huh? C'mon. . It wasn't until my boyfriend went to the bathroom did any of us even know about the huge back room. That would have been more helpful than the dirty looks we were given by one of the bartenders. Once we did move back there, I got the impression that we were an inconvenience for Shannon's. No one wanted to come wait on us, so we took turns trekking to and from the bar for drink orders. And then no one on staff seemed to know how to turn on the space heaters. When someone was found who did, the three surrounding us were out of gas. Odd and off putting. The beer was average. Nothing too great, and the "red-headed slut" shots were tasty, but not good enough to keep our group from walking over to the Tap House to get our drink on. read more

This place is awesome. Very homey atmosphere; service that is fast, reliable, and very friendly; good selection at the bar; and the food is fantastic! In particular -- the reuben rolls are possibly my favorite appetizer in the Chicagoland area, the fish and chips are outstanding, and the pepper hanger steak is hands-down the best steak I've ever had outside of a steak house. I've been to Shannon's several times just for a nice evening out with my wife, and we've also hosted parties there -- the large back room is perfect for that. Pretty good for a pub in the 'burbs. They have good food, good beer and most importantly, a good patio in the back. The sandwiches are very generous and so are the salads. They are nice to kids, but don't have any coloring books or anything like that. I just met a friend there for lunch (with my kid) and they let him kind of walk around and look out the windows at the trains. They also were great about bringing me the extra plate for him, (in my book they have to be 3 before I buy them their own meal), some places are snooty about it. This is located in downtown Glen Ellyn so you have to park on the street or the Municipal Lot a few door down. Limited parking is kind of a novel idea to us in the 'burbs. read more

It's a little disheartening to write a three-star review for a three-star place. I mean, just look at that bell curve of a ratings distribution! But really, it's hard to go anywhere else. If I could give half-stars, I wouldn't here. 3.00 stars for me. I suppose the lousy service could be blamed on the triple-digit heat, but it wasn't particularly hot in Shannon's, with its dark wood, pleasant lighting, and bar that sits angled within the tight front room. My wife and I did not feel welcomed by the server. She served us, she eventually came around to replace the half-eaten (or so it appeared) pickle that appeared on my plate, she gave us the check. But there was no warmth there at all, even on a hot day such as this. What struck us right away with the place was the smell. We were told that there was a special on a half-order of the fish fry, and though I didn't see anyone eating fish, the smell of the place would lead you to believe that everyone was chowing down on it. The smell was less "fried fish" and more "fresh fish" to my wife. Oh well, better than old fish smell. My wife's salad, called "Boru Chopped Salad," had lots of crumbled feta and Craisins on top. That part was fun to eat. But once you get past it, you see the lack of walnuts, the copious amount of iceberg lettuce - the American of cheeses, the Red Delicious of apples - and the apple-honey dressing that had the thickness of pudding, it left something to be desired. My wife thinks that the salad did the trick, but she'll get something different next time if we return. I went with "Nor's Chicken Avocado Sandwich." It was the highlight of the trip. Within a tasty and half-crispy-half-chewy tomato bread roll were a smallish piece of chicken, nicely grilled, with a decent amount of fine avocado, cheddar cheese and pesto mayo. This I would get again, but not with the fries. Ugh, steak fries. Again, the worst of its kind about there. When marketers try to get patrons to buy a lousy version of a food staple, they give it a clever name that makes people want it. They either go ironic (Red Delicious apples), patriotic (American cheese) or adventurous (iceberg lettuce). Too often, steak fries are either undercooked and cold or overcooked and dry. Shannon's fries were on the dry side. They offered mashed and cole slaw. I chose poorly. One nice thing about the receipt is that we can get $5 off a $25 purchase at their butcher shop in Lombard. Like all butcher shops, it's good quality but at a high price. They love their burgundy pepper hangar there, and the hangar is on the menu here. I did order it once and found it to be good but not worthy of the accolades I had heard at the butcher shop. It's a different cut of meat, hangar is. It's bent and wiggly when you get it. It lacks coarseness. It can have a feeling of rare meat, even when it's cooked more thoroughly than that. Not my thing, but it was good for what it represents. They have a nice outdoor section in the back, which would not have been nice today, though it probably would've smelled less fishy there. read more

A nice beer garden that's heated and covered in the winter offers a chance to get away from the smoky bar. They have hand cut chips (the fried kind, not the brit version) with a honey curry dipping sauce that's addictive. Aside from being your standard pub, there's nothing special about this place. A friend of mine was planning a celebration there. She got there an hour early and let them know we had a large party coming. I guess they told her there was another party that was going to be in the back. She said, "that's ok, we'll stay away from them, we'll be up here." and they told her the party would be up front. So she asked where they wouldn't be. They said the party of 20 would be everywhere, they'd move around. Basically, she got thwarted on a weekday evening when they weren't busy otherwise, because there was another largish group. Poor showmanship, Shannons. Santa Fe next door, which was markedly more crowded was a thousand times more accommodating. read more

The only reason this place gets one star is because the server was lovely, but as we tend to go to these places for the food, this is what my review will focus on. After visiting Balmoral Scottish Restaurant last night, I had a craving for a good breakfast, so we decided to go to a local Irish bar to satisfy. This is an bar pretending to be Irish. I imagine the owner or the Chef has never tasted an Irish breakfast in their life! It consisted of a burnt sausage, which honestly if it was cooked right, it would have been good. The beans were typical American beans, nothing like Heinz, which is a typical staple and taste nothing like the sweet brown sloppy crap on the plate. The bacon was a feeble attempt of back bacon, looked grey and had a funny taste, seemingly off. The mushrooms were either tinned or over cooked and my choice of eggs (basically anyway as long as fried!) 2 of the 3 eggs were broken and so over easy was more flat and hard. The fried tomato was sliced tomato that was shown a frying pan for a second. All of this delightfulness was served with sliced rye bread that came from Jewel Osco last week. I couldn't believe that they actually served the crusts, I don't do that to my kids at home, let alone in a restaurant. I have honestly never sent a meal back, but in this case, I had to! I should have just left, but changed to the potato skins. Don't bother! My partner had the fish and chips, chips were typically frozen and the fish although looked fine, did not have a crispy coating, rather soggy. On a good note, the smoked salmon starter was nice and a good portion. Give this one a miss, there are better Irish bars! read more

I love this place!! Okay, so I've been in Irish Puns on two continents (and a non-imperial isle), and I love pub food, good drinks. great food, and a bustling atmosphere. The food (I've tried most of it on my visits) is excellent. The service is terrific and the waitstaff very friendly and always chipper. Nice local place to go in and have a pint. Usually a good amount of regulars there around happy hour. Not that they have a happy hour --- do they? I often went in with my computer and wrote. Service is a little spotty; there were times I would sit for way too long, waiting for my check. Bar staff is good, welcoming, accommodating. Lots of good back and forth between staff and customers. This is a decent little Irish-style pub in downtown Glen Ellyn, with the usual dark wood, Irish menu items, and Irish beer. I killed 2-1/2 hours in this place three days before Christmas while I was waiting for my husband to finish up a Christmas bike ride. That was long enough for me to nurse an Irish coffee, two pints of Guinness, and a plate of home-style fried chips with a sweet-spicy honey curry dipping sauce. I had a little table all to myself right in front of the window where I had a good view of the Christmas decorations and window dressings on Main Street. The place started to fill up as time went by (lots of families with little kids), but my waitress never forgot to check in on me and see if I needed anything else. Went here for lunch today with some friends- Food was nothing spectacular. I had the spinach and feta salad with chicken and no dressing. It was a fairly large portion and tasted pretty good. The chicken was cooked well, but for some reason I'm not sure if the cheese was really feta. It didn't quite taste like it, but I'm not entirely sure. The other people at my table had reuben sandwiches and the potato and corned beef soup. They enjoyed the items, but again, nothing special. The service wasn't that great. I have a thing for the Shannon's salad, the dressing is pungent so not to everyone's taste. I like the grilled tuna sandwich when it isn't over-cooked. I love that i can get a generous side of salad with the generous sandwich instead of fries. I'm not a drinker and pubs generally do not appeal to me. But, here I enjoy the year round back patio and find this to be a good place to take people who aren't so adventurous in their dining habits. I think they do what they do quite well. read more

This restaurant was in the right location for a Friday lunch after a morning concert with my fellow violinists. Three of us ordered the tuna melt, (being a Friday during Lent), which came with a delicious and fresh salad. I had the apple vinegar dressing, which was very good. One of us ordered the potato corn beef soup, which smelled and looked wonderful. She also ordered a very meaty, old fashioned corn beef sandwich. However, it was not a lean sandwich, which I would have preferred. With the decor and Irish Pub kind of restaurant this would be a great place for after work to have a beer and appetizer or fish and chips on a Friday night. Before my place of work moved some distance away, I was a regular at Shannons and there is good reason for that. Not that I tend to be a creature of habit (although there is some truth there), not that I am a devoted beer drinker and socializer, but their pub grub is terrific. It's served up at a good price and is very good food indeed. Mon thru Fri there are lunch specials and after you wolf down number 9 the 10th is free. (Ask for the lunch card.) On Fridays the lunch special is their outstanding fish & chips (1/2 order--the full order makes a too huge lunch). Another of my favorites lunch specials, when it comes up, is a turkey Ruben. That brings me to my favorite sandwich in sandwich-dom: Shannon's grilled Ruben sandwich. Tender corned beef (heaped on), Swiss, sauerkraut, and 1000 Island, on grilled rye bread. You know the ingredients. What you may not know is that Shannons has a talent for putting them together to perfection. Also, try their soups. Any soup!! They're delicious. Always homemade, always savory, always a great addition to your meal. The standard soup is a thick and nourishing potato soup, but order instead their soup de jour. You'll be astonished. After a bite I found chicken wasn't cooked, I brought this up and sent it back. I ended up with the same piece of chicken now with cheese on it. Had lunch on the patio with my daughter. I ordered the corned beef burger and fries. It never disappoints...always flavorful and juicy. The fries are also very good. My daughter ordered a grilled veggie sandwich on focaccia bread and she said it was delicious, but a little messy to eat. Service was prompt and unobtrusive. Prices are very fair.
