We went in to try something new and I had been wanting to come in for some time. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in and the menu had more selections than what was showing online. We came in shortly after they opened and there were no other customers. The food took some time to come out and it came out one by one (there were 5 of us). This made it challenging for those who "wait to eat until everyone is served" type people. When we finally got all our food, the food was good. The portions were large but the timing was frustrating. It's great to have a nice, new place in the neighborhood. The inside was bright and clean. Staff greeted us as soon as we entered. Air was pumping and music was playing (Jamaican type tunes). Food was good. The owner was there and went table to table introducing himself as folks waited for food. It was a Friday night, 7pmish and we decided on a couples date night. The music is loud. Loud like - club loud. We scanned the code on the table and ordered. A few minutes go by and a server came over to bring water and take our order - we let her know that we placed our orders with the code. Cool. An hour goes by... One plate arrives. 20 minutes go by... Another plate arrived. Let's just say- the kitchen is slow! Eventually, our table is packed with all of our food and the portions were really good for happy hour prices. Close to 9pm, someone pulled out a karaoke machine. That was horrible. The staff is singing and trying to get restaurant goers to sing. That's adding insult to injury! Folks have been waiting so long for their food and now you want to add this to the mix!? Some folks actually got up and left after not getting food. I really hope that this restaurant survives in the neighborhood. They are going to need to get more folks in the kitchen - especially on a Friday night and turn down the music or expect a different kinda crowd. If karaoke is gonna be a thing - make sure there's a sign at the door or something. Everyone isn't up for that kinda of shenanigans. We tried the patties. They were good. The jerk patties was the best to me. We ordered the BB fired wings. They were delicious. Sort of reminds you of the honey BBQ wings back in the day at KFC. For entrees we ordered the oxtail combo with grilled shrimp, rice and peas with cabbage and plantains. Everything was amazing. Oxtail gravy taste like you were on the island. Cabbage was delicious definitely home made. None of that bag cabbage. Oxtail fall off the bone. Plantains sweet and tender! Rum punch. Taste like your on the island. Island breeze fruity and sweet. This is my third time with this establishment--I really wanted to support. The first time we went in sat at the bar and ordered carryout. The bartender was eating dinner sucking chicken bones while fixing drinks. Ok, blame me, I wanted to support them. Tried them Months later for delivery. They were an hour behind the delivery time. I called, they were not apologetic. Ok, blame me again (I believe in 3 strikes), I ordered delivery now a year later. Order was supposed to be delivered half hour ago and my poor Uber Eats driver is losing money waiting for them to complete my order. I've called and no one picks up with full voicemail. That's it. The location is PERFECT with plenty of free parking, lots of space inside with plentiful tables, chairs, booths and a large inviting bar in the middle of it all. It's so spacious. It's owned by a group of siblings who moved to the DMV from Jamaica 13 years ago. They explicitly state on the menu that they use "Walkerswood" which signals you right away that everyt'ing is irie with the food so anything you order will be authentic and can't be mistaken for cheap Jamaican imitation. So don't start with the "this isn't authentic Jamaican" nonsense. LOL! My dinner companion and I ordered a few different things and tried each other's. We had the jerk wings and got the medium heat and had them add their homemade hot pepper sauce on the side just in case. The wings were tender and juicy and sizeable, not those Cornish hen wings people keep selling us around town elsewhere. Franks Red Hot had NOTHIN' on their hot pepper sauce. I really COULD put THAT isht on everything! I had the curried shrimp, peas and rice and cabbage. The curried shrimp was in a "pot liquor" with peppers and onions and was so delicious I could put THAT isht on everything too! In fact, I saved the leftovers of it, took it home and tossed some air fryer wings and even some steamed shrimp in it. It had the perfect balance of heat and flavor! The peas and rice was fluffy, tender and oooooh the flavor of the coconut milk and spices whinin' together on the plate! Chef's kiss! And the cabbage was perfectly steamed and lightly spiced. Oftentimes, restaurants destroy cabbage and overcook it until it turns brown. And most local DMV Jamaican or Caribbean spots I've tried have peas and rice MUSH with too-hard peas. Well this peas and rice was fluffy, peas soft and the cabbage was GREEN like new money! I also had a side of callaloo. That callaloo was better than what I had IN JAMAICA! It had beautiful fresh peppers and onions and mixed greens, "sweated" together to complement their different flavors and textures with the spices added. Callaloo-jah, that stuff was BOMB!!! My dinner companion had the stewed oxtails and raved about them so much. She said they were perfectly trimmed of fat and gristle which often plagues a good stewed oxtail. But not here! There was zero gristle on them and she remarked how they were so deliciously tender that even the bones were soft enough to chew on. She typically wouldn't dare nibble on bones in a public setting, but she did so shamelessly in Shantoo, not only because of how wonderfully the oxtails were prepared but also because one feels that much "at home" there. I had seen in a couple other people's reviews of this place about a Shantoo mule cocktail. Everyone raved about it so I ordered one. I didn't see it on the menu though, and when I ordered it, they referred to it as a Manchester mule. So just note that if you want to try their version of a Moscow mule. It's the mule, in a mule cup, but with a tropical island twist. It is refreshing, smooth and "sneaky." I highly recommend this cocktail, the ideal complement to an authentic island meal. The prices on everything were surprisingly reasonable too! It's grown increasingly difficult in this climate of extreme inflation to find a good bar or restaurant in the DMV where you don't spend your electric bill for desperately mid food and a few glasses of ice and juice disguised as cocktails. Maybe their prices were so reasonable because they're still fairly new, or maybe it's because they really don't need eggs for much of anything on their menu. Wink wink. The service overall was awesome too! While everyone working in there was very friendly and welcoming, our server was Kyra, an educator in DC who moonlights at Shantoo. She was fun, attentive, and was very engaging. She made great suggestions and made sure we had everything we needed at all times through the evening. Brand new family owned resturaunt that replaced the old Pizza Hut in Bowie. If you love caribbean food - this is a new hidden gem you MUST try. Our server let us know the owner/chef is born/raised in Jamaica and came here in 2011. Their spices, oxtail, and other items are imported directly from there. The flavors were delicious, authentic, and clearly made with love. Jerk wings are not your typical - he adds a special twist that truly was devine. The steamed red snapper is a must try - careful when eating because it is not fileted! First tried Shantoo on 9/20/25 - take out. Remodeling needs to be completed (used to be Pizza Hut); unfinished decor and furnishing. The Food quality is average at best...nothing special or unique about taste, presentation, quantity, etc. I'd prefer a local chain (e.g., Negril, Da Jerk House, etc.). Too many other better options in the area. I ordered curried chicken, curried goat, a beef patty, and carrot cake. Curried chicken and goad was good, not great! The beef patty was likely made the previous month and sat under a heat lamp for days before being served. It had very little filling. Very disappointed with the beef patty. The two sides, rice and broccoli were plain, dry, and tasteless. In fact, the second side of rice was left out of my takeout bag. Finally, considering food quality, Shantoo is significantly overpriced. Unfortunately, I would not recommend Shantoo Togetherness unless for travel convenience and/or a reasonably nice ambiance. The way people HYPE EVERYTHING in our area is absolutely absurd to me. After reading reviews, I decided to give this place a try with my mom and daughter. We went in around 2:30-3pm & there were 3 people seated. All of them finishing up. Within 10 minutes we were the only guests in the restaurant. This means the place was empty and not crowded before we even got our food. Upon entry I was disappointed. I'm gonna add pictures because I truly have no words for the atmosphere I walked into. The reviews are claiming how nice and CLEAN this place is and if I could give 0 stars for both, I would. The bathroom and overall ambiance is filthy and has that unclean feel. It was unwelcoming, and doesn't look like a restaurant. I was about to turn around if I wasn't starving. It gives abandoned Island vibes, very low effort when it comes to presentation. The booths are so close together, my 7 year old could barely squeeze in and she's TINY ! We had to move booths because everything in there is so carelessly thrown together. As if they weren't ready to open but they did anyway..? Trash, rags, and bins sitting in multiple booths around the place. I was almost scared to eat here but I gave them a chance because we have no decent carribean food in this area. Upon entry...ZERO greeting. Just "are yall dining in or taking out" and that came 3-5 minutes after just standing at the host stand. Service 4/10 - Host needs more knowledge regarding the menu because pricing on menu, does not reflect prices on the check. Make sure you triple check what they've charged you for because there's absolutely no breakdown given. Our actual server was nice. Very attentive and followed the steps of service very well. We visited here after a long wait for nail service and felt a need to eat. We looked ahead and saw the old Pizza Hut in Pointer Ridge. We were greeted by our waitress who was pleasant and knowledgeable to provide good recommendations for appetizers and entrees. We started with the jerk chicken wings which were delicious!! Our entrees were the oxtails and estrovich snapper, rice and beans, cabbage and plantain. The fish and oxtails cooked well and tender. The rice lacks seasoning but tolerable when you add a gravy either oxtails or curry, the cabbage was ok more al dente than preferred but add the gravy eats well, and lastly the plantain were decent. The atmosphere was chilled, relaxed and they played Caribbean music giving the full experience . If you drink, the bar was the go to spot as many came to get the specialty drinks. Tried Shantoo for the first time. Inside is very nice and new but I couldn't help but shed a tear for the old Pizza Hut memories it still evoked in me. I ordered the curried chicken along with sides of rice n beans. I will admit the chicken was quiet tasty but if you order this dish pls be careful esp if you serve to young children. Mine was filled with ALOT of shards of bone! You have to mash the mouthful with your tongue to ensure there are no bits of bone in your mouth before you swallow or even chew. I feel like I would have to manually pick through each forkful if I was feeding to my young child. Next time I'll order chicken on the bone cuz my teeth can't handle shards. My shrimp came out first. Waited 15 minutes for the rice and beans with no curry gravy. Asked for curry gravy and waited another 10 minutes for a cap size cup of curry gravy. Now my shrimp is no longer hot my dry rice is no longer hot. Asked if that was all the gravy I would be receiving and was told yes. The cap size cup of curry gravy was not enough to even cover one cup of rice let alone my rice and beans. Needless to say I sent everything back. The jerk seasoning had a little smokiness to it and the kick was just enough so that I could enjoy the heat without wincing every time. The rice and peas were bussin I love the hint of coconut milk and it wasn't all dried up like I've experienced with other Caribbean spots. Cabbage delectable I like the textured and seasonings they used with it. Beef patty was great I like that it wasn't heavily breaded good ratio of meat to dough. Overall can't wait to get more. I will never go back again because the food was not good tasting. The food flavor profiles and balance off. The meat and vegetables seemed fresh but I feel the skill made to cook this food was experimental at best. Curry chicken full of green peppers and no depth of flavor. Never seen nearly that much or any green pepper in curry chicken. No dark meat in curry chicken. Seems like all breast meat. The jerk chicken not good. They only have wings on the menu and that should have been a sign for me not to consider. Red bean and rice very bland. No thyme, no coconut, no broth to give depth. Shan--no! First time visiting and last time. We arrive and was immediately greeted with a smile. The waitress/bartender/hostess seemed very nice at first. She asked if we were getting brunch. I wasn't aware there was one and I asked what time does it end--5pm she stated. She said well if you want to eat brunch you have to sit on this side of the room. Umm ok. The waitress/bartender/hostess apparently stops by to ask what he wanted to drink. He proceeded to tell her that my wife ordered on the app over 20 minutes ago and didn't know what was ordered. I return to the restroom another 20 mins go by. I wave the lady down asking if we could have our drinks. Some time later our food arrives. The food LOOKED amazing. I was thinking they have bad service but the cooks got it right. We receive our utensils shortly after which were dirty! I had the escovitched snapper, cabbage and plantains. my hubby had the stewed chicken and peas and rice. My hubby who isn't a picky eater tried the plantain he said it was the worst he ever had and that it tasted like a potato. He was right. My snapper was tough and chewy. The ONLY reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because the chicken is cooked perfectly. But this is not jerk chicken. It's roasted bbq wings. As a person from the Caribbean you always want to get a taste of home if you're not cooking it yourself personally. I drive by this place a lot and decided to try their food. I have to say that I would highly recommend them if you're looking for great tasting Caribbean food. First dish I tried was the Snapper filet whiting steamed with callaloo and fried bammie, so flavorful and tasty my whole mood changed to one of utter happiness. Really nice how the fish was just right with flavors galore. I then tried the Sweet and sour chicken with broccoli, callaloo and roasted corn which didn't disappoint. I found the prices to be a bit high, and my $12 margarita was really a rum punch. They def need more servers as one guy roamed the entire floor, and he never checked to see how I was doing or brought additional water to the table. The food was excellent; it is authentic Jamaican cuisine - the best we have had in this area! They are a new restaurant in Prince George's with a staff that is warm and friendly.
