Today was the second time my kiddos have gone in to check out the store. We bought a leopard gecko and a crested gecko before knowing this shop even existed here in town. Jeff, the owner, spent so much time educating my 11 and 12 year old about each of their animals and showed them all the other cool critters he had in there. They left the store last week stoked about what they learned. Today they went back with their geckos to ask Jeff a few more questions. He was so kind and patient with them. He was great and was able to confirm the sex of one of the geckos to ensure it was safe to get them a friend. I've read all the bad reviews and I'm here to tell you we had the complete opposite experience! I will gladly come back to purchase from him ( even paying more) because of the customer service he provided! My kids are asking all the time if they can go see Jeff's shop! Jeff and his crew did a presentation at our local park and had all the kids entertained and well informed on the different species of lizards, turtles and snakes. My son loved it. I remember when he had his bussiness in the Tracy mall and now informed us he's located in down town Tracy. Jeff the owner of the store is so helpful! He gives you good knowledge on reptiles and the food they eat. Yeah at times it may be darker then others but I go there once a week for my snakes food and Jeff does get to cleaning each enclosure. I actually love his personality because he's straight forward. I think people now days are to fuc***g sensitive. I personally like things straight forward don't sugar coat things with me... He's one guy running the show. I'm starting to think some of these reviews are fake because Everytime I go here the owner is the most arrogant and rude person I've ever met!! All my friends and acquaintances say the exact same thing! He makes you feel like you're dumb and is quick to shut down any of your opinions. Another huge negative is that the reptiles are kept in really poor conditions and a good amount of them had mites on their skin! If you want good customer service and great prices and a overall great experience everytime go to either Serpentarium in Modesto or Carter's in Stockton! It is worth the drive trust me! read more

Walked in & walked out within 3 minutes of being there. I own two bearded dragons myself so I'm always excited to see other ones, but I was shocked and sad when I seen them. Multiple full grown bearded dragons were housed in the same enclosure which isn't normally recommended. The lighting in the enclosures was not correct. Most of the enclosures barely had heat lamps. UVB lights were burnt out in almost all the tanks, one had 0 lights at all and the bearded dragons were in compete darkness. 2 bearded dragons that were in the same tank together were biting at each other & another had a completely black beard & didn't look happy. When I asked why the lights weren't on, I was told "they turn off when it gets too hot". ( owner seemed a little offended I even asked that ) It's January and was about 130 pm. No excuse for the UVB lights to be off & for them to have no heat. Most of the other reptiles lighting was turned off as well - but not sure if other type of lizards are okay without it as I'm only familiar with bearded dragons. None of the full size bearded dragons were for sale which I thought was strange. They would be better off in a different home, with the correct lighting living as a single lizard in one habitat. I instantly walked out because it made me too sad to see them living like that. read more

I remember when the guy had this store in the mall, and even then his attitude toward people sucked. I understand when it's peoples kids misbehaving and that's easy to see an issue with, but this guy is a d*ck through and through. we walked in looking for a tortoise and he was just rude and exasperated about it. Really kind of snide about " you do realize it's the third largest tortoise in the world" yes, yes I do. I'm a vet tech, I have an aquatic turtle rescue with 7 different species, and knowledgeable in most reptiles as I've had them my whole life. People are going to buy things regardless so instead of making snide comments and being absolutely rude, EDUCATE people POLITELY. Piss poor attitude to continue to have after all these years. Highly recommend the Serpentarium in Modesto!! they were so friendly and extremely knowledgeable and even sent me home with an aquatic turtle someone dumped there for free. This place has a great selection of animals but that's probably the only good thing about this place. Been there twice and experienced and viewed terrible customer service from the owner of the store. I am very passionate about reptiles and I'm known to drive hours just to view them and talk with people that are passionate about the hobby of reptile keeping. I'm with him on his view of some people shouldn't own reptiles or should understand what they are getting themselves into when buying a reptile but his delivery and energy is completely off. I witnessed him completely destroy the confidence of a potential new customer. The customer definitely lacked knowledge and was on the verge of making a poor decision but I felt like the owner should have educated him and helped him understand why he was making a poor decision, not make him feel stupid and bolt from the store. I totally understand that there's a huge difference between taking care of a few animals compared to running a business that requires the care and upkeep of hundreds but this place, the animals and enclosures are in very poor condition. Poor lighting for enclosures, poop in enclosures, very old sheds, underweight animals, and so many other signs that tells me this guy needs a lot more help here or he should downsize some. For new people getting into the hobby can be an intimidating process especially if you want to do it right. This place probably isn't the place you want to start your journey of reptile keeping. read more

We were in the market for a beardie and he gave about an hour of his time for free. We ended up buy the beardie elsewhere bc my daughter didn't want to wait. I asked him for crickets and let him know what snake I have (baby gopher) and immediately cut me off saying snakes don't eat crickets repeatedly after I'm telling him that's literally all my snake eats, HE REFUSED to sell me them with attitude and continued eating whatever he was eating, he didn't offer advice and completely wasn't helpful at all. The place doesn't smell as if he cleans the cages they way he should, he speaks to customers as if they're a complete annoyance to him & he closes whenever he pleases blaming "events". On more than 3 separate occasions, one of the following Wong (or both) occurred... I've called to confirm that he had live rats & if he'd be open until 7. He said yes to both, but I got there a couple of times & he said "well I expected them, but they didn't come in." Or I'd get there a little after 6 to a handwritten note on the door that he was closed "for an event". WTF? What kind of event comes up after 3 on the same day I called?! Just an excuse he uses to close early. Don't give him your business, he's an ass! read more

So I'm this past month my son wanted a bearded dragon. I did a ton of internet reading and wrote down all the stuff people say I needed along with 100 questions. I don't know how many times I visited Jeff and asked him questions about what i read up on. He answered every single one, explained it and made sure I didn't buy unnecessary stuff. He was super patient with me and was never once rude or acted annoyed that I kept coming in with lame questions lol. We have even brought our tortoise here when she wasn't feeling good and he gladly helped us get her back to normal. We love this place! read more

Holy wow, I seriously cannot recommend these guys enough! November 2018, we got a pair of uromastyxs from John (who is AWESOME!) of Shedskin at the ConEx Reptile Expo. We weren't even looking to get any animals, but it was love at first sight for my bf, so we picked them up. Unfortunately, one of them disappeared in my car. In November. We tore the car apart as much as we could, put out heat sources and food, but nothing. 4 frigid months later, it shows up alive and well in my back seat!!! We drive often, and more likely than not have 2-3 75lbs+ dogs with us. This fiesty uro survived the cold, the lack of proper nutrients and light, and avoided being squished by humans, dogs, and car parts ALL WINTER LONG! We are still so elated and the whole thing feels surreal. The one that did not decide to prove itself master of hide and seek is a spoiled brat and we love it! It will beg for pets and handling time (chin and back scratches are its fav!), will eat right out of our hands, and literally responds to its name. These two dorky herbivores are the addition to our family that we had no idea we needed, and we have Shedskin to thank for that. Even months later, they were excited to hear about the disappearing act and offered to tell us their genders when they're old enough. Helpful just for the love of animals, which is the way it should be. P.S. Kinda worried my car may be a Lazarus pit now. read more

When I first went in the store he quizzed me on my setup since I told him I just got our lizard to make sure I had everything correct. He told me the do's and don'ts which was greatly appreciated. I called, frantically, requesting to talk to someone with knowledge of Praying Mantises. He answered the call and said to let him know my questions. We had been friendly with a mantis whom was residing in our lavender bush pot and we had grown to love watching him/her. When my husband found him on the ground this morning, we panicked and I phoned Shedskin. Even after our conversations, Jeff went as far as to allow me to send him a video of what we were observing. Stopped by to look at potential bearded dragon and snake for niece and nephew. The most disgusting and vile place I have been. Snakes in plastic bins on a shelf, with no lid and any kid can walk by and pull one out. Smell is rancid. The caged dog in the center of the store is an odd addition and even he looked neglected. I've been here a couple of times and compared to other reptile stores we depend on, this place is absolutely filthy, rancid and all of the animals look very depressed. Most of the tanks are filled with a lot of shit and look like they haven't been cleaned for quite some time. Saw a beautiful tarantula that was living in a simple plastic container that barely had enough room for it to even hardly turn around in. At least give it more space with some soil to walk around in. The Chinese water dragons, chameleons, etc don't even have any sources to provide them with humidity. Their tanks are completely dry. The owner generally has a chip on his shoulder in there. If you're up for a drive, check out the Serpetarium in Modesto instead. read more

Tucked away in what was once an outlet mall is Shedskin. It's slightly dingy and neither looks nor smells clean. The selection is very good, with an interesting mix. Though more than a few of the reptiles looked sickly. What earns the shop a two star however is the condescending and vaguely racist owner. Don't assume because someone doesn't look like they know about reptiles, that they haven't owned them for years. If you are a racist and own a business, maybe try to keep all of the tell tale signs not so much in the forefront. If you want sickly, overpriced reptiles you'd be better off at Petco ( which the owner hates.) read more

Took the drive down here to see the location since there aren't that many reptile shops around. First impression walking in was that it didn't look bad, I'm assuming the gentleman that helped us was the owner which he was very kind and acknowledged us. I strolled around the place to only notice that a lot mostly all of the animals had no water, not one drop. Some looked to have trouble shedding as well. There were no thermostat on any of the animals at all. Also there were a few different species snakes housed together. In one cage for instance there were maybe 3-4 ball pythons hosed together which is a huge NO unless for breeding purposes which I know was not the case due to them not being of breeding size. Also noticed they have a BRB marked NFS, I myself have one and did extensive research before ever getting one and there was a few things wrong with her housing. There was 0 humidity it looked very very dry in there, and there weren't enough hides and as well no water in the bowl. I understand that caring for reptiles is very time consuming and running a reptile shop takes a lot of work and employees that know what they are doing. It's unfair to the animals to be kept in poor conditions. I believe this place does have potential. Just needs more employees to take time to actually care for all the reptiles. read more

So last weekend, my boyfriend and I drove up to Lodi for the reptile convention. When we were looking into information regarding the convention, this store came up. We realized it was right off the freeway so we figured we'd stop on our way home. Apparently, this store had recently moved to this new location. We were super excited to go to Shedskin Reptiles, because from looking on Yelp it had fantastic reviews! I wish we hadn't even stopped.... We walk into a very dirty, low dimmed lighted store with 2 teenage kids sitting at the front. They did not greet us, let alone look in our direction. We were in there for maybe 15 mins or so and not once did either worker even acknowledge us or ask if we needed anything. Whatever, I wasn't too bugged about that, although thought it was a bit rude and quite unprofessional. What got me was how sickly and sad the reptiles looked. the cages were a disaster, dirty, and most of the reptiles looked like they were having problems shedding. I barely saw any sort of wet hide in order to help them shed their skin.... The worst part about all of this was EVERY single water dish (I am not exaggerating when I say every) was black and FULL of mold and other gross things. Definitely not sanitary for the reps to be drinking, let alone bathing in to help shed. The water looked like none of them had been changed out in months. I felt so sad and sorry for all of them. I wanted to save them. We went in there initially because we are in search of leopard gecko babies and possibly full grown females. They had a a couple cages of leo's but all of them look very pale and sick. (And not the pale look they get right before shedding.) Plus, those two cages had a dark black film on the glass so it was a bit hard to see. They should be exposed to some sort of light in order to regulate their internal clocks to know when it's time to sleep and be awake. Anyways, I heard good things about this place, but maybe that was when they were in the old location. Not that the customer service, care for the animals etc. should be correlated at all to the location of shop...Either way, the current state of this place is terrible and the animals living there deserve way better care than what I witnessed... read more

Can't believe how many negative reviews there are on here. This place is GREAT! I stopped in because my girlfriend was given two turtles and we had no clue what to do with them. Jeff was kind enough to take his time and walk us through exactly everything we needed to make sure the turtles are happy, step by step. You can really tell he wanted our turtles to be healthy and he gave us some pointers on keeping them in tip top shape. I have no clue where his prices fall in comparison to other pet shops, but that doesn't matter. I would much rather support a local shop and a guy that has WAY more knowledge than some punk employee at Petco. You can really tell that he cares for his animals. Anyways, it is my personal opinion that anyone that doesn't like this shop must have a few screws loose, and must know nothing about caring for their animals. Not sure how this place has so many stars but i walked into the store and was very upset with what i saw. most of their monitors were not in proper setups. one of their chameleons looked very sick and they didn't have the proper uvb lighting so they probably all have mbd. if you're buying a reptile make the trip to lodi or modesto (the serpentarium). read more

Can we start by talking about how awesome it is that there's a reptile store conveniently located in the mall? Jeff, the owner, is super awesome. I love that I can look around the store and never feel pressured to buy anything. He's also incredibly knowledgeable about all things scaly. This is officially the coolest store in the mall as of 3-12-2012! There were some turtles, a wide variety of snakes and pythons, and some big cool looking lizards. My kids loved the reptiles and hopefully this pet store sticks around. We'll have to wait and see. read more

I dunno why I keep going back here. The man who owns the place acts like he's doing you a favor patronizing his business. He has decent prices for a brick and mortar reptile shop.
