This place is amazing! I am so glad I graduated or else I'd be coming here everyday buying heavy carb/sugar snacks in between my classes. My favorite is the chocolate pineapple bun. It is the most amazing bread they have here. In fact I don't think I've tried anything else here except that cause I've never seen this chocolate bun in any other sheng kee bakery before because i think it's a fairly recent addition. So back to the chocolate pineapple bun! It's a round bun with a chocolate cookie dough sort of topping spread over the top with sugar sprinkled on top of the chocolate cookie dough. Inside there is so much chocolate stuffing. If you're lucky you might come when this bun is freshly baked and the chocolate on the inside is gooey and melty, but if you buy it when it's already cooled off, the chocolate inside hardens and it's as if you're eating a chocolate bar inside your bread. I also like how this place opens really early! I came by around 8 on a Sunday morning and they had tons of freshly baked breads already placed outside. Only downside is the long lines (they should find a more efficient way to serve people because they wrap the breads into the plastic bags at the register which takes up a lot of time) and their milk tea is pretty bad. I ordered the regular milk tea and didn't like it at all. So I would skip the drinks and just get the chocolate bun! read more

It is ok. If you craving Chinese pastries it's a great spot. The boba drinks are so so. Not that expensive and it did curb my craving. Whenever my family visits UC Berkeley, they insist on a breakfast of Chinese buns from Sheng Kee Bakery, less than a block away from campus on Telegraph Avenue. We usually go for the custard or red bean buns. We have also had the bbq pork buns and moon cakes. They have a wide variety of Chinese buns and we have only tried a small fraction of them. However, all of the buns we have purchased have been very tasty. You start off by taking a plastic tray, a wax paper to place between the tray and the buns, and a plastic tongs. Then you walk the down aisle of self serve bun bins and place which ever buns you want on to your tray.. You take your tray to the cashier who places each bun individually in a plastic bag and rings up your purchase. I highly recommend giving this Chinese bakery a try. read more

What I ate: Patries, all kinds. Visit date: May 13, 2015 First time? No. I've had many a pastry here at Sheng Kee. I enjoy the savory ones the most. The pizza bun bread is slightly sweet, the vegetables tender, and the meat nice and salty. From the sweet buns, my top picks are the pineapple and the pineapple chocolate buns. Both just slightly sweet. I wish they made mini versions of their buns, but I'm definitely not complaining about the size. Also delightful are the meat pastries in the hot box. The crusts are flakey and the insides warm. There is $10 minimum credit card purchase but that's super easy to meet! Just grab a tray and get to filling it. read more

Sheng Kee is a fun experience. This location is in South Berkeley, so you'll have to park and walk a few minutes. You walk in. They have some beverages in a refrigerator. You can grab a tray and some tongs, and find whatever you like. They have sweet baked items like a red bean bun or a chocolate roll. They have savory items with ham, cheese, hot dog, etc. I've tried a few items. They're tasty, but the baked bread items are saturated in butter :( That's a huge turn off for me. They have some cake rolls in a refrigerated display as you're heading to the cashier. They also have some cute decorated layered cakes for parties. They have boba. It's worth visiting to try, and up to you if you'd like to visit again! read more

I come here when I visit my son who lives in the area, but I'd probably make the drive all the way from where I live in Sacramento either way. So many choices and every thing I've tried is delicious. Good prices. Only con is parking, which is street and being a block from the campus, its impossible. So plan for a walk, but so worth it. read more

It's been a while since Sheng Kee has opened. When the bakery first opened, boy was it packed. Not to the extent of 85C, of course. Nonetheless, it really stood as strong comparison to UCafe, which was offering lackluster pastries in comparison. Fast forward a year or more, and how have things changed. Currently, Sheng Kee does gain some traffic, but it's nowhere near the giant it has been. The hype for Asian pastries has died down, and it has some competition in Paris Baguette, though not necessarily directly due to location. So how are the pastries? For the most part solid. I will note that this location is not as good as some of the other locations, but I think that's ultimately a conquest of trying to satisfy a more diverse palate rather than the strictly Asian target market in Asian strip malls. But honestly, I don't think the milk tea is all that great. Or rather, it suffers from significant competition in the nearby locale, what with the opening of Sharetea. It makes Sheng Kee all the more difficult of a place to frequent in terms of boba. Sharetea has taken the location, and Purple Kow has taken the chubby cup. So now what? What really gripes me about Sheng Kee is their credit card minimum. Sure, if you're buying from an Asian bakery, it really isn't hard to spend more than $5. But for a quick breakfast? A milk tea in a chubby cup and a pastry doesn't even net me $5. Rather, it results in a sub-$4.50 total that they won't even take a card for? Most places enforce this to prevent people from just buying a drink, but when you can't even get the core competency of what a Sheng Kee so close to campus can take advantage of, you're doing it wrong. Prices are cheap, and both bread and drink are abundant! Quality is not bad for the pricing here - since it's a Taiwanese bakery, it reminds me of the one I have back home and I occasionally like to stop by to make a quick lunch out of their cheap sandwiches and breads. The drinks are pretty okay, just what you would expect for the prices. Not super quality ingredients, but honestly I'm here to fill my stomach with a cheap budget! There's no seating, so it's really very much a grab and go type of place. They also sell Taiwanese tea eggs which always smell amazing when I walk in! So I pretty much ran inside of the store because it was 9:55 PM and Yelp listed Sheng Kee's closing time as 10 PM. Wrong! The cashier said that Yelp seems to be inaccurate with their store hours but that they actually close at 11 PM (at least on Tuesday night when I went). I had a hot dog croissant-type bread and a jasmine green milk tea (not on menu but I guess it's like a "secret menu" item according to the cashier). My boyfriend had the taro milk tea with boba. The food and drinks were pretty tasty. Nothing mind-blowing, but pretty good... and their cups are HUGE. I also like how they have a large selection of baked items and how they are conveniently opened late. I also like their cute logo. Hahah Just something to note: They don't have anywhere to sit inside, so this is really a grab-and-go kind of place. Durant Food Court is around the corner though, so you can always bring your food to the benches over there. Excellent drinks at a reasonable price, HOWEVER, this is all lost due to horrible customer service. The cashier I was served by was extremely irritable and annoyed. She spoke very quietly through her mask and got irritated when I asked her to repeat what she said. She also made a huge fuss over the straws when I took them. Because I was sharing my drinks with many friends, i needed many straws but the cashier saw the straws and reached her hand into my bag to yank them out. I felt very disrespected and unvalued as a customer. I will be avoiding this store and will let all of my friends know to avoid this store. I have been waiting for this shop to open since the Fall semester. Sheng Kee joined forces with Peets Coffee, locally owned coffee shop originated in Berkeley. Sheng Kee is always packed with hungry students scrambling to get their snack before going to class, etc. It is surprisingly fast too, you don't have to wait in line that long because they would open up more station as it gets busier. This store has great selection of Asian pastries, buns, ranging from mini lunch sandwich for 1.99$, banh mi, and BBQ pork buns. Everything in this store is under $2, which makes it very affordable for college students. I do wish that they expand to the Adidas store so students can hang out or do homework at this cafe. Sheng Kee deserves a 4 star rating for price and variety alone. They have a plethora of sweet and savory treats that are well stocked throughout the day. They have egg tarts, roll cakes, green onion buns, hot dog buns, etc. Their cakes are pretty good; the fresh fruit cake is great, but I highly recommend skipping the tiramisu. They have some decent bubble tea options as well, not the greatest boba in the world, but definitely not the worst. Chubby cups are 2 for $5.00 which is amazing. I typically stick to the thai tea or the tiger milk tea. I would avoid the coffee here and just walk down the street to grab some. read more

Walking around Berkeley on a Sunday morning at 10 am, there was not many places open. As my friend and I walked around, we bumped into Sheng Kee Bakery. Since I hadn't eaten breakfast yet, my friend insisted I walk in to grab something to eat. When you enter, you will see freshly baked pastries behind plastic-glass doors. Hungry? Grab a tray, add a piece of paper on it, and grab a tong! As you walk down the little pathway, you will see many types of pastries including pineapple buns and egg tarts! I came in 2-3 hours after opening and got a HK style pineapple bun and a hot dog bun. I wasn't satisfied because it wasn't warm nor did it taste very fresh. Didn't hit the spot as compared to other bakeries I've been to. Expected more because of it's a bit pricier compared to other places. I wish they would warm it up a bit when you go to the counter. Cash only if it's under $5. Minimum purchase for credit cards is $5. Thankfully my friend had cash and paid for me. read more

Well, while I don't live close by, I do enjoy getting some baked goods from Sheng Kee. I prefer these guys over 85C. However, I usually go to the other location in Berkeley. I found out that place close earlier and this location closes at midnight so I came by here at 10pm. I have to say, you won't get what you want this late. You get leftovers without any discounts. I don't like to complaint but I was just able to get the buns that were available that looks decent. They included: BBQ bun Red Bean bun Taro Bun They were all okay. All were a little dry except for the BBQ bun. I would like to come here one of these days earlier so I can get a fair assessment of their products. read more

Some useful tips I've learned through multiple times dropping by Sheng Kee on the way to class: -They start serving milk tea around 10am -They don't have boba until around 11am -All of their milk tea is really sweet IMO. I ask for half sugar and they dilute it 2-fold with water, which according to my Asian clever bargain-hunting mindset is a ripoff ("wun bun" in Canto, to be more exact), but it suits my tastes a lot better. You can still taste the tea-ness and it contains enough caffeine to send me off to a productive day at the library. -It gets busy, but the line moves fairly quickly. The people working there are pretty friendly and efficient -They serve Peet's but it's overpriced. Never will I understand why people go to Sheng Kee for coffee when there are like 4 real Peet's on/surrounding campus read more

Whenever I pass this place on my way to school, the smell of their freshly baked bread just beckons me to enter this quaint little store. The pastries here are always fresh and very delicious if your looking for something cheap that will fill you up! The egg tarts here are very good. Things to get: -Egg tarts -Ham and Cheese anything -Red Bean Bun -Anything savory -Milk Tea. Even though the milk tea here is probably the best you will be able to get in the area, its nowhere near good. Its "ok" Toppings are free so ask for them! -Tiger Milk Tea: This has a fairly unique taste to it, definitely try it if your having trouble deciding between milk tea and thai tea! My only gripe on this is their cash only policy. They are not flexible at all with their policy. Apparently you need to order over 5 dollars to use a card and my items rang up at 4.25. The cashier refused to charge me my items and said that I needed to go find an ATM elsewhere. Note to owner: If this is the case, kindly let the customer know and allow them to use their card anyway. As an Asian bakery that is a stone's throw from the edge of campus, Sheng Kee is a great grab-and-go option for picking up bread/buns, sandwiches, cakes, and drinks in between or on the way to class. The service is also excellent, efficient, and helpful, as well! The bread is very inexpensive, and you can easily have lunch for under $10 by buying different ones. Sheng Kee is also a popular destination for cakes! My favorites are the Mango Mousse Cake and the Black Forest Mousse Cake. Like other Asian bakeries, the store is lined with a variety of baked goods that you can choose from using a tray and tongs. It does get a bit cramped during peak hours as the pathways are narrow, and somewhat awkward if you are farther down the path and want to double back for something when there are people behind you. In terms of savory goods, my go-to choices are the BBQ Bun, the Shredded Pork Bun, the Chicken Pie, and the Hot Dog Cheese Bun. I'd avoid the Garlic Bread (very difficult to chew). In terms of sweet goods, I would recommend the H.K Pineapple Bun (flaky and not too sweet) and the Chocolate Cream Bun. They also sell tea eggs that stew for hours -- I usually get one or two along with the bread for a quick lunch! read more

So I wanted to treat him to something sweet & yummy! I had been to this bakery before in Richmond so I was familiar with what they typically had inside. There was a fair amount of pastries out. I think the one by Ranch 99 has a bit more sweets than they had specially on the day I went. Not sure how it is on other days when they're busier. I was the only customer at the time. I swung by here at around 9 AM last Saturday morning to pick up a birthday cake for a friend. There's no parking right in front when you're coming down Telegraph, so I turned left onto Bancroft and parked there. There were three employees prepping different things behind the counter, and they greeted me when I walked in. They had a wide variety of cakes already available (Tiramisu, Fresh Fruit & Cream, Hazelnut, etc.) and in different sizes, too (full round, smaller square cakes, etc.). Since it was shaping up to be a really warm day, I opted for the 6'' Fresh Fruit & Cream cake - $20.95. Sheng Kee's cakes are slightly cheaper than the ones at nearby Paris Baguette (by about $10), but I think they're just as good. The two bakeries, however, have different offerings when it comes to cakes (i.e. PB does a blueberry cake that SK doesn't have, and is REALLY good, and so I'd definitely splash out a little extra $ for a friend who loves blueberries). Also, PB offers you a disposable knife with candles and matches tucked away into it (see my photos for PB Berkeley), and I wasn't offered any of that at SK. In retrospect, though, I should have been the one to remember to ask. I love the bright orange and yellow SK boxes, and the way they tie it up in pastel pink ribbon. Definitely brought a smile to my friend's face, and all the ladies in our Women's Ministry group loved the cake, too! Thanks, SK! read more

Hello, Sheng Kee. We meet again. I've been to the Union City, Dublin and Fremont locations several times in the past for their pastries but this was my first time visiting for their milk teas. After a long day of gallivanting around Berkeley, my friends and I noticed everyone holding these ginormous cups of milk tea around Telegraph and had to track down the source of their joy. Finally, the trail ended at Sheng Kee, a brand spankin' new addition to the busy street. We were really attracted to the huge cups for some reason (oh, maybe because it was hot out) and opted to get one of each, three in total. For $2.99, our drinks came in what is known as a "chubby cup," a cruel invention to make you have to pee. Needless to say, we were greedy and got the largest option available, but next time, I think I'll stick to the regular sizes as it is really impossible (at least for me) to finish a drink of that size. I felt like I was drinking from one of those bizarrely huge daiquiri containers in Vegas or something. Anyway boys and girls, the moral of the story is don't be greedy and only bite off what you can chew. Still, for the cheap price, I wouldn't mind coming back to Sheng Kee again for some cool, refreshing boba! read more

This place is AWESOME! I have never seen anything quite like it inside the US, but I am sure there are a few of these around. Regardless, this place is more than just a straight up bakery. What i really like is the little windows that let you see all the different creations. Some savory, some sweet, but all baked. Most cost between $1 and $3. Every thing from pork buns to creme filled sweet rolls. This would have been where I would have ate every day if I was went to Cal. Sitting only half a block from the campus, the place was crawling with students. There were some more adventurous options (one i really wanted to try had dried flaky pork covering the whole top of the roll), and standard options like ham and cheese filled pastries. This place has some great versions of the regulars (though not amazing blow your mind), as well as tons of unique takes.
