This bakery is one of the few ones that I go to around the Berkeley area! It has a wide variety of breads and desserts, ranging from sweet ones to savory ones. There's also a large variety of cakes for sale; there's cute animal cakes too! My favorite items at Sheng Kee Bakery are the chubby cups; it's 2 chubby cups for $6 with a free add-on for both! I loved the Thai tea and fairy milk with grass jelly--it's a little sweet so ask for less sweet! read more

Omfg.... this place is the Asian Delight of semi fast food. They have Savory as well as sweet puff pastries, buns and rolls, some the size of my face. I got the paper roll sponge cake with almonds on the outside. I also got a chocolate covered cream puff and a Thai tea for a little over 6 bucks. This place is right across from the University, so parking can suck. But if you got a spot you got to go in and try it. It's amazing. read more

Hit up that shredded pork thang. They got some Peet's too, which is pretty bomb. The tongs are at the far end of the shop which is a little annoying. Two bucks average for a bunch of buns that look pretty tasty and substantial. It's uCafe with economies of scale working in its favor. Plus, Jaron L. works the register! Averaged price goods (around $2 a piece), you can get snacks to complete meals here since they even have drinks and sandwiches. I've only been here once and I'm already in love with the place. Favorites so far are the pineapple coconut bun and pork sandwich. Also found the mocha chocolate horn to have delicious coffee flavor to it, but I felt the amount of whipped cream on the inside was a bit too much for me. Just personal preference. Came here during Saturday afternoon and even though there were quite a handful of people inside, it was a quick process picking and purchasing. You most likely won't find the most amazing pastries here, but everything is decent quality (from what I can see and have tasted this far). The only reason this place isn't 4 or 5 stars is because they have a $5 minimum of credit card purchases.... and it's a pastry/coffee shop... most of their items are only $1.50... you have to order a substantial amount of food to reach the $5 minimum... That being said.. all of their pastries are amazing, and coffees/teas as well. They have a wide assortment of unique flavors such as a taro bread roll, green tea croissant, sweet matcha mochi muffin, pineapple muffins, and even some ham and cheese croissants... While I'm trying to reach out to the corporate, I'll start with leaving my review here first. I bought a cookie tin last week (the end of July) since it was on sale and the expiration date is 8/18/2023. I had one piece and it was stale. I had my sister to confirm. She put it in her month then threw it out. Well, things happen and I understand. So I took it with me to exchange to some bakery goods since the cookies are uneditable prior to the expiration date. The young girl with side braids raised hell when I let her know the cookies were stale before it was expired. Customers that were waiting to be checked out witnessed this rude worker's behavior. She first told me that I should have known it was stale since it was on sale. Then talked down on me for being cheap buying sale items, even questioned me why do I buy them if they were on sale. Huh so you have multiple sale items in the store daily and it is the customers' fault to buy sale items that you put up in the store? Why is it my fault when you sell stale cookies that is not supposed to be expired yet? I will be filing my complaints against this worker and the business to bbb and ca dept of consumer complaints for this discriminative action. read more

Nice cheap boba with an amazing offer of 2 jumbo cups for $6 which compliments well with amazing, so cheap, Asian pastries; however, that amazing offer could not outweigh the rude service and poor drinks that they provide. With a large group walking in, the workers there immediately put a dark, stern face. They kept rushing us, probably trying to hurry us up to close the store as they seemed really tired. Their cheap boba supposedly with full sugar level tasted extremely bland and lacking in sweetness, almost as if they forgot an ingredient to the tea; the only sugar came from the lychee jelly. Very unfortunate, as the smell of the bread always taunts past-byers to take a peek inside to see what they have in store. Furthermore, there are certain cards they could not take (I believe it was Am-Ex cards) and it requires a $5 minimum to use them which means you would have to buy boba and couple breads, more than what some want or buy for a friend along with your own. When it was closing, I was sadden at the tray-fulls of bread they discarded and hope they can minimize the waste. I couldn't bring myself to giving higher than 3* rating due to their poor service and lack of taste. Incredibly, disappointed after hearing wondering compliments about this store. I've only come here a handful of times, most only leaving with one or two items, but this time I bought a larger amount since I wanted to save some for the next few days. An Asian bakery chain in Nor Cal - they have a pretty good variety of things you would find in a typical bakery in Taiwan or Japan. Some things are hit or miss though. Hits include: - Tea Egg : Great for breakfast or a protein filled snack - Custard Tarts : very soft and custardy, I like how they don't overcook the custard - Asian Cheesecake : soft, airy and cake-like - a nice light option to western cheesecake - Green Onion Pork - a classic Asian pastry item Misses include: - any of their 'Pineapple' cakes - which have 0% Pineapple. - Milk Tea : not much tea flavor and too much sugar - Green Onion Bacon sandwiches : which used to be good until they started cheaping out and putting sliced white onion and some not bacon substance inside. Food: Cheap snacks on the go! The best park of Sheng Kee is their bakery items. They are all very cheap, so you can leave with a feast for under $10. My favorites are the BBQ pork bun, the raisin swirl, the apple turnover, the beef curry horn, and the green onion & hot dog bun. Drinks: I've only gotten boba here once, and I really didn't like it. The tea had a strange flavor and the jelly was hard. I definitely wouldn't recommend getting a drink. Atmosphere: The bakery is self service, and service moves quickly even with a line. Sheng Kee has been open for 2.5 days, and I've made two visits. This makes me semi-qualified to write a review, even though a real fan of the place would have come for the soft opening and have returned multiple times each day since. I definitely like Sheng Kee! Let me tell you where I'm coming from: I've often found myself in front of Chinese bakeries after polishing off some dim sum in the Chinatowns of the world. Invariably I've been disappointed because I bought something that looked like a Western cake and turned out to be a pale imitation of what I thought I was buying. At Sheng Kee, almost nothing looked familiar. I felt culture shock each time I walked in the door! Fortunately, the unfamiliar items were completely enticing! On my first visit, I was the only customer. As I walked in the door, I was greeted by the entire staff. A woman who acted like a manager appeared by my side to make suggestions and to answer my questions. In fact, I would have been better off with one of her younger colleagues because she didn't know the English name for some of the pastries that I asked about. I ended up buying two red bean items: one a warm pastry that had just been baked, the other a small hockey puck that was wrapped in cellophane. I also got a half-loaf of sliced bread: the bread with raisins and walnuts. The fresh red bean pastry was totally delicious: I devoured it in about 20 seconds. The bread was fine as well; I had two slices this morning for breakfast. The hockey puck left the house in someone's backpack. I haven't heard news of it yet but I'll bet it was a hit. Today I ended up with a green onion pastry after trying in vain to repeat yeaterday's red bean transaction. No worry: the green onion bun was fabulous! This time around, by the way, I was far from the only customer -- news seems to be getting around. Sheng Kee on Telegraph is clearly a gamble: many businesses have failed along the block. On the other hand, the place is great and will obviously appeal to Cal students and staff. I hope that it stays around. This could be the beginning of a comeback for the area. read more

Jaron of the UC-Berkeley Men's Octet works here!!! He is so dreamy. He's cute. He's super hot. I applied for a job here back in January, but I was not hired because I am not Asian, plus, if I worked here, I would serve as the antithesis of the "cog in the wheel," i.e. I would slow down and interfere with the intricate, well-oiled machine that is Sheng Kee Bakery. The people who work here know their shick very well, and they are always making moves. We got the pineapple bun, taro bun, chocolate croissant (even though it's a looked-down-upon Americanized item), as well as this malty soy "juicy-juice-like" sippy cup with a straw included! Everything was swell. The line was long, but that gave us more time to delight at the delectable treats. Plus we're not busy anyways. They offer some sweet Tiramisu cake, which I promise to buy tomorrow for my Berkeley friends. Maybe I'll come here for my wedding cake. They also have this cake called the California Bear cake. It looked like Pedobear, the brother of Oski the Bear. I recommend getting the items located at the periphery of the bakery because the inner corridor serves American food, and you're supposed to be eating the Asian food. Oh my gosh, I'm so glad that Sheng Kee opened in Berkeley. I love me some Asian bakery food. (Much better than Ucafe in my opinion) My absolute favorite? Pork Sung Bun (this is a personal favorite every since I was a little girl) $3 Milk Tea: Pretty decent, not as sweet as the other milk tea joints in Berkeley. (Which some would deem as a good thing) I also like the assortment of "coconut buns" as well and some times they will include raisins. Garlic Bread: I'm not a huge fan of this bun. The first time I got it, it tasted very bitter. Some of my friends really like this pastry though so I think it's entirely dependent on taste preference. The dessert pastries are great as well. Had a good first experience. Really liked it here! I've passed by it a few times since it first opened, but never got a chance to go in until today. At first, I was worried that I would have to wait a long time to pay for my stuff because the line was really long, but it wasn't too bad of a wait. Even though the line looped around the store, It probably only took me around 5 minutes to get to the front of the line. There are a lot of options to choose from, so unless you already know what you want to get, the wait in line will go by pretty quick. The girl who helped me at the counter was friendly and efficient. And for such a busy store, what surprised me even more was how fast my drink was ready for me to pick up. A minute or two after I ordered and paid for the things I had, my boba milk tea was ready. As for my order, I had a custard bun, BBQ bun and a Boba Milk Tea. The flavor of the buns was pretty good and the boba milk tea wasn't too sweet, which was nice. This kept me full for a while. So if you're looking for a quick snack before/after class or something to fill your stomach for a while until your next meal, then you definitely want to grab a couple items to go. I honestly think this location is my first Sheng Kee experience. You find this bakery at every Asian shopping center down in the South Bay, where I grew up, but my family kind of avoided this place. We hardly bought pastries, and if we did, they likely came from some other Asian bakery like SOGO or 99 Ranch's bakery section. The reason for avoiding this place was the prices. Down in San Jose, $1.50 for a danish or similar feels rather steep, or maybe I just picked up my mom's cheapskate habits. But after living in Oakland/Berkeley for years, and working in SF, suddenly that $1.50 danish, or the $3.50-ish triangle sandwich seemed like a sweet deal. Now that I'm a grown-up and earning my own money, free from my mom's jurisdictions of what's worth buying and what's not, I can indulge on a pastry here, a triangle sandwich there, and laugh at the $9 sandwiches that some SF places feel appropriate to sell. Those triangle sandwiches aren't too filling, but they fill my stomach well enough. All the sweet pastries are worth having; my favorites are the danishes. You should probably heat them up for better noms, but they're so good as-is that I finish them by the time I walk to Channing. (Psst, blueberry danish. You're welcome.) I've yet to try Sheng Kee's jelly cups, but they sure look good. Skip the boba stuff though and head to Sweetheart Café just half a block away. Sweetheart has more variety and cheaper prices. read more

I have been meaning to try Sheng Kee Bakery after reading some of my fellow Golden Bears/Yelpers critiques. It was early morning and most of les ours d'or (Golden Bears) were already in class. No crowds! The staff were still putting out trays of des pâtisseries fraîches. Which means for me a chance at the freshly baked goods! Magnifique! I see the self-service set-up is similar to Paris Baguette. Grab a tray and tongs to help oneself. Pretty simple enough. Some nice cakes, cookies, and sandwiches at Sheng Kee Bakery. I notice the texture of the cake slices and cake are light and sponge-like. It is a cultural difference--I tend to like my cakes moist and dense. Voila! I found myself a bargain! Three petit croissants for a $1.55. They resembled small miniature loaves of sourdough sandwich bread. SFW pour moi! The cashier at the till was very honest. And she called out to two male students in a hurry, "Don't you want your change?!" One of them turned around and came back for his change all flustered and embarrassed. Obviously a customer in a hurry and grateful for the cashier's honesty. I would definitely stop by Sheng Kee Bakery again if I am in the area for les petits croissants, bien sur! read more

Sheng Kee is my favorite Chinese bakery! The pastries are consistently delicious and everything is so crazy affordable! Definitely come here for the buns, not the boba. I don't know why they decided to do boba, but they don't do it well. Besides the yummy buns, they sell sweet bread loaves, cookies, sponge rolls, and cakes and cheesecakes (whole or by the slice). My favorite pastry is the almond croissant. They're filled with sugary almond goodness (think bear claw filling) and coated with almonds, powdered sugar, and a light glaze. I was lucky enough to snag one of these buttery treasures fresh out of the oven one day and it was pure heaven. The flat, pin-wheel sponge rolls are a must. They're pillowy soft, just sweet enough, and less than $1. How can you NOT get one?! They keep for days in the fridge too. Not that they'll actually last that long... Green tea mochi danish and blueberry danish are some notable winners and I'm a sucker for the cocktail buns, which are filled/stuffed with sugar, butter, and coconut. If you really want dessert, their Japanese cheesecake is a great option, and the mango mousse cake is super good. My roommate bought me the whole cake for my birthday last year. If you want savory/lunch-like options, the bacon, shredded pork, and green onion buns are all solid choices. Because they're across from campus, they open early and stay open late to cater to the students. I don't know how many times I've grabbed a bun right before an all-nighter at the library. This location also has a greater selection of buns compared to other Sheng Kees due to the larger size of the store. I love this place. Come in the morning for fresh bread and buns. The hong kong pineapple bun is a must try if you have not already. I love their pig and bear cakes but i've never tried it. The mocha cake is also great, not too sweet, but just enough so you can taste a tint of mocha and cream. There honey green tea that is hot is perfect with any bun, I usually has for half sweet as it usually comes out pretty sweet. The sandwiches are also great as well, 3.99 for ham or turkey. They are also doing a special now for about 5.50 you can get soup and sandwich! I suggest coming early in the morning for the tastiest of the buns. Also they do special sometimes in the back and front by the cashier, for buy two for the price of one or buy one get one fifty off. read more

LOWDOWN: Boba and sweets. What more do you want?! Especially with such a convenient location for the UCB crowd, this place never fails to have a decent sized queue throughout the day. All their baked goods have the same dough base so you won't be blown away if you try a new one each time you visit. I was super excited for a more traditional bakery to open near campus! Ucafe was pricey and had a very strange/ experimental/ fusion selection of stuff. Must be HongKong styled.
