As a Korean, I've been coming for years, probably because I live right next to it. Despite that fact, I think it's one of the best KBBQs I've been to. Their meat is good, the side dishes are yummy, and the service is really great. I know that there have been several other KBBQs in the Northridge area, but this one has remained constant through the years, which must be a testament to something. I even see a good number of white people every time I'm there! I think the only thing that I wish Shik Do Rak had was an All You Can Eat option (as I'm pretty sure they do not have that). Expect this place to be normally packed but the food is pretty good and worth the wait if you have to. My only complaint is that the waitresses don't always pay attention because they get so busy with everyone else's orders and forget to come back to you with what you requested. We asked for extra napkins 3 different times and she said "yes ok" at each return. She came back every single time without it and we kept having to ask again. It was weird. The go-to Korean BBQ in the Valley! Food: When with friends or family and they're craving some Korean BBQ, this is the place we go. Or if ever randomly craving a nice cold bowl of Neng Myun, this is the place we go! Good food for a decent price! The quality of the side dishes is great too. Service: Service is decent. Usually at Korean restaurants, I've experienced having to hunt the waiters down to get their attention for more water, more napkins, etc. But this place isn't too huge where the waiters are lost in the sea of BBQ tables. It's a small-medium sized place where you can almost-always have a waiter in sight. Crowd/Atmosphere: It's pretty much a family place. Came here the other night and had an amazing kbbq meal. We ordered the dduk bo ssam of bulgogi and rib-eye but my favorite part was the rice cake wraps, unlimited salad, and the sauces to eat with the meal! During the meal our waitress noticed that we were so busy with wrapping and eating our food, she came over to flip the meat for us and even trimmed out all the fats from the rib-eye into small pieces. :) We even got our salad bowl refilled 3 times very quickly. $45 plus tax and tip was not bad. If only they would serve that chilled sweet rice drink afterwards like they do in San francisco! I know I'm asking for too much but a girl can always wish! :). Will definitely be back! read more

I've had Korean bbq several times in Korea town and love it, but also noticed the the service in most restaurants is between really bad to ok.   This restaurant's service is very bad.  If you don't mind waiting and being ignored, this is the place.   As I was there with my family and noticed that if you aren't a regular customer or one of their type of customers they won't offer acceptable service.   First, the hostess sat us down and did not leave us menus. As we waited for a few minutes for others to arrive the server ignored us.   Second, once everyone arrived we still sat waiting for a few minutes without menus.  I kept looking around to get someone's attention without luck.   Third, as more customers arrived they were seated immediately with menus, water, plates, and other condiments. Fourth, my girlfriend had to get the attention of the "guy in charge" for the menus and he left without asking if we needed anything else. Fifth, I had to get the server's attention so we can order drinks.  She rushed us and only took half of the order and left without asking if that was all. Sixth, after ordering the food the server was rude, bossy, rushed us but did manage to shove the plates and other condiments dishes on our table.  As she tried to help us with grilling the meat she told two people to move and make her some room. I can keep going but what made this most memorable was as we were leaving I turned around and saw our server run to the table and immediately pick up the tip which made the "guy in charge" run outside to the parking lot and confronted my daughter about not   leaving a tip on the receipt.  I told the guy we left it on the table and he wanted to argue why we left such a bad tip.   Bad tip = bad service. read more

I come here every once in a while when I'm craving kbbq and don't want to go all the way to k-town for it. I definitely prefer to go to Shik Do Rak rather than an all you can eat place because the meat quality is better than ayce kbbq and getting a meat combo is usually more than enough for my husband and myself (their bean paste stew is also better than a lot of other places). The 2 stars are for the food and the occasional okay service we've received in the past. What I like to have in regards to service from them at the bare minimum is to be given the items we've ordered, not be spoken down to, and for no one to be outright rude. For those who don't want to read my long review below, the tldr; servers are nicer to the older generation and provide better service to them if you're seated together or at the same time, but the food is good! The last time my husband and I dined there, we were a part of a larger party. We had 9 adults and one small child. The four older adults (family dinner at Shik Do Rak, I was looking forward to it) sat in one booth, and the rest of us "younger" members sat in the booth across from it. Mind you, I say "younger" in quotes because not counting the kid, the youngest of us is late 20s. I admit we do look a little young, but what the heck? We ordered beer and soju... and the server IMMEDIATELY turned around and asked the "adults" if it was okay for us to do so?! This trend continued throughout the entire meal - we would order something (or try to) and she would ask the "adults" if we could order whatever it was. We had never experienced this before, so we chalked it up to having a bad server. Then tonight... my husband and I hadn't eaten all day and we were excited to have kbbq since we hadn't had it in a while. We walked in before the dinner rush and were seated at a table for about two seconds before they moved us to a booth (still can't figure out why because we didn't ask for one and that table remained empty for a while). The server who moved us didn't even use her words... she just kind of gestured (I assumed she wasn't sure if we were Korean and so I asked her in Korean if she wanted us to move and she nodded), so we moved. We were moved to the booth I spoke of earlier (where the "adults" were sitting during our family dinner, actually). Less than a minute later, a family (parents and some very young children) was seated in the booth across from us. We ordered probably less than a minute apart (the server only took our order because as she was setting the mushrooms and onions on the grill I asked her if we could order). We ordered soda, water and a meat combo. Banchan, salad, rice paper, meat comes out. We figure the soda and water won't be far behind since the booth across from us has their drinks so we start grilling. I waited calmly 5 more minutes after and no one came even near our tables. Tried pressing the service call button that never seems to work here. Server eventually came by to drop something off at the booth across from us so I called out to her and she said just a moment and left. By this point, my husband and I were ready to walk out if she didn't actually stop by (I would've been super angry if that happened because I really didn't want to drive more for decent kbbq), but she came by after dropping off... I want to say straws? at the other booth. She asked us what it was we needed and so I told her we'd like our drinks and off she went. She stopped by a bit later to check on... the booth across from us. Literally, I heard her ask them if they needed anything else and then she just walked away. Not even a glance at our table. I thought maybe she might stop by another time, but no. I admit, it did get a bit busier while we were eating, but c'mon, not even once? The rest of our meal was pretty uneventful other than having a hard time getting a server to come to our table so I could ask for jalapenos and garlic. We still tipped (only 15% though) since we were provided a service, sort of. I thought of maybe talking to a manager about this but by the time we paid, it was pretty obvious how busy they were so I opted to just leave (usually if it's bad enough, I'll talk to a manager, if it's not and the cons outweigh the pros, I'll just never go back). Honestly, I'll probably be back once the annoyance has died down a bit (the joys of living in the valley haha), but for now, Shik Do Rak's servers need to realize that a customer is a customer and they gain nothing from snubbing those they deem less worthy for whatever reason. read more

soooo good. the only reason they don't get 5 stars is the fact that they don't have ayce AND they need bigger tables for the amount of food they give you (we were a party of 4 sitting at a table for 6 and barely had enough room...but other than that they're awesome. we ordered d1, d5 and d6 from their menu (marinated bulgogi, marinated short ribs, and beef tongue). we were there for lunch and the total came out to about $80 for the four of us which is pretty decent. the banchan was good. they gave sardines which i've never received before at other korean places but i tried it and it was good. the meats were excellently marinated and delicious as well. what i really liked was they gave us each a small plate of rice paper which i've never ever got at another korean place before...and i LOVE me my rice paper. so they get props for that because i don't like having to share my rice paper. lol. the meal, other than the banchan and the meat, came with the usual bowl of rice, salad and soup. so it's a lot of food and so much that we were so full with those 3 plates of meat that we didn't miss the ayce at all. read more

My favorite Korean bbq restaurant in the valley. The side dishes are plentiful. The meat is always good quality. It's not cheap but not unaffordable. For lunch, they have a deal for about $25 which includes brisket and another meat of your choice. It comes with bean paste soup and all the side dishes. I'd say it can feed 3 women. I love their cold buckwheat noodles too. That's my usual go to place for naengmyun. It's about 8 or 9 bucks during their lunchtime. Be sure to ask for fermented radish slices (moo ssam) for your ddok bossam! Adds a refreshing, sweet flavor to your meaty bite :) read more

I recently moved to the Valley and right around the corner is Shik Do Rak. The Devonshire and Reseda Intersection looks as if it could've been transplanted from Ktown (LA), but I digress... The first night I moved out here I went to the restaurant with my family. I'm not a picky eater and I'm usually fairly content with almost any Korean restaurant, but I'll place Shik Do Rak (Northridge, not LA) among the top in this area. The BBQ was pretty good, plentiful, and the service was great. My dad scored an extra bottle of soju so he was pretty stoked. And after consuming tons of veggies and meat, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the price was very reasonable. (I don't remember the exact figure, but better than most places in LA). Being a college student, I also think this is a good place to go with friends. If you're in the SFV area, check this place out! read more

If you're familiar w/ the location in LA, you will know that the place isn't known for anything more than its food. The decor, parking, etc..is blah if not scary! However, the food there makes up for it ten times fold.. If you did not know, this is one of the first Korean BBQ houses to do dduk bo ssam. Well, when I first saw the Shik Do Rak sign as I was driving to R's house in Porter Ranch, I asked myself, "Is this the same Shik Do Rak as the one in LA?"...well, the answer is, "Yes and it's actually better because it's a LOT cleaner." I love how they already have the onions and the mushrooms on the grill for you as you cook the meat. I love how huge their location is along w/ how they have their own parking lot. This is honestly the only Korean BBQ place worth going in Northridge. Now, if only I can find a decent Korean food restaurant in the Valley...hrm.... read more

3 Stars There are not many good Korean BBQ options in SFV, so we decided to try out Shik Do Rak. It was a Friday night and the restaurant was pretty busy, a good sign. Another good sign was most of the patrons were Korean. The first thing I noticed was the gas "grills" they use, they were not like many of the other BBQ restaurants, they were more like pans. The problem with this is there is no where for the meat juices to go and thus the meat tends to steam. Once the grill does get hot enough, the marinade starts to burn. This was the biggest draw back. We ordered Kalbi, Bulgogi, Japchae, Seafood pancake and Broiled Corvina( a type of fish). There was a good assortment of panchan and their spicy bean paste mixture was good. Their portions were good and the meat to be decent quality. Unfortunately their marinade was just too sweet. This might explain why many of the other customers ordered the meat without marinade. Overall this is a decent option for Korean BBQ in the valley, plus they have the duk bo sam, which you don't get everywhere. read more

My family and i came to eat here after church on New Year's day and let me tell you, i had suspicions but they were lifted after i tasted their food! It was so yummy that i had to have more! Tried this place out for lunch as it had pretty good reviews here on yelp. We were down at Northridge to watch a volleyball match at CSUN, and we were both craving Korean food. When we walked in, we knew it was going to be pretty good when we were the only non-Koreans there: I'm Filipino and my friend is Japanese so we didn't really stand out too much. The place was almost full, just a couple of tables open, so there were a lot of people eating. After being promptly greeted, seated and drink order taken, we perused the menu and boy, what an epic. Quite a few pages long, and filled with pictures thankfully. I settled for a pretty benign dish, the chicken teriyaki bibimbap (sp?) and my friend had the spicy shredded beef soup - we weren't in the mood for cooking our own food this time. Not even 20 seconds after ordering all of the side dishes came in. The various kim chi and what have you, many different kinds and all tasty. Our order came about 10 minutes after ordering. We were both satisfied with our food and left very happy. I almost finished my food but didn't leave enough to take any home. My friend was able to take some of his soup home - it came in this huge bowl and looked quite yummy. The next time we come back we will have to try cooking our own food, or at least trying other menu items as it looked good. At least it looked good when other people's orders were taken to them. I've been going to here ever since they had their location on Hoover & Olympic. I'm a big fan of this place. I have probably been here at least 30x over the last 8 yrs. This place is definitely not fancy like many of those in K-Town. With that the service has always been very good. The staff is very attentive and keep our little side dishes coming as we work through the meat on the grill. I've only had good experiences with the staff and they work hard constantly refilling things. As for the food, the flavor you get from the beef, chili, sesame oil, salt and pepper together really keep me coming back for more. The meat wrapped in the rice paper w/ some roasted garlic, onion, mushroom, lettuce, oh it makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Went here after driving all down Reseda Blvd with my cousin because we couldn't decide on what to eat. We finally decided on this place and it was pretty good!! It was about $30 for a kbbq meal for two people with choice of two meats. The only thing that bothered me was that it would be $15 a person, and not even all you can eat. There are plenty of other cheaper AYCE kbbq places in the valley. Granted my cousin and I weren't that hungry but still, deal-wise, this place isn't the best. When we walked in, I quickly noticed that we were the only non-Korean ones there. I usually take that as a good sign at a restaurant because it means authentic food! It was super crowded and busy but they found us a table right away and service was pretty fast. And as for the food - it was actually the perfect amount to fill both of us up into a comfortable food coma. The side dishes were as good as their meats and over all this meal was very satisfying. The only thing that bothered me was that when we brought the bill up to the cashier to pay he basically told us how much to tip. The closest kbbq restaurant in my area, one of the good ones in the valley. I would prefer the unlimited kbbq restaurants in k-town, but my family lives close to this one so we're always here. Food is always good! It's just the service that im not happy about. I believe they are understaffed, and It's most of the time hard to get the attention of the servers. There has been a number of times where i had to follow up on just getting sauce from them, just coz they will forget i asked for sauce. We ordered Soju to drink (Korean Saki tastes like Vodka). My girlfriend and I came here on a Friday night, which was probably a mistake; we waited for at least 30 minutes to get a table. Long waits are like double-edged swords though: yeah, you wait around, but...at the end of the yellow brick road, there's a reason people are waiting -- the food is great. Well there's not much to say about this place . The side dishes are ok and also the lemonade. I don't want to sound like a fat persons but I was expecting an all you can eat . I really don't like how you pay for a combo plate and it only comes with what they put in it . There plates are also a little over priced and this is coming from a person that doesn't mind paying a lot . As long as the food is good . The water tastes like it's sink water too much chlorine . The reason I'm giving this place 1 stars is because while I was cooking the last of the meat they came and turned off the grill before my meat was done cooking. Some of the meat was still raw and shortly after they brought the bill . I honestly felt like I was getting kicked out before I was even done eating. The main thing i didn't like about this place was that no one in the restaurant spoke english :[ the food was alright, but i don't think the meat was marinated correctly, or enough. for 43$ it fed 3 people, but it seemed like i didn't have enough. Korean BBQ places in the San Fernando Valley often charge exorbitant prices for very little food. You can often get better cuisine right in Koreatown for a fraction of the price. However, Shik Do Rak makes you feel like you're getting your money's worth. Their kalbi is great, and the sides that they offer are also pretty good. The only gripe I have is that over the years, their portion size on their BBQ packages and the sides that they offer have decreased. Not as satisfying as before, although I don't eat that much to begin with. Try their hot sauce instead of the sesame oil. It's to die for. read more
