I am vegan. I should love this place, right?? Maybe I am ordering the wrong thing, but I've had far better tofu scrambles at non-vegan specific places. Both times I've ordered this for breakfast (they only have around four/five breakfast options) it's been cold. Let's start with that. The meal consists heavily of potatoes, very little tofu, and barely any other vegetables. I've gone out of my way two times to come here for the vegan food and sorry to say it is not good. Additionally, they forgot my husbands bagel and he had to ask for it not once, not twice, but three times. When it arrived, it wasn't even toasted. I always have a problem ordering a juice or smoothie. Sometimes I wait in line at the juice door and they tell me to order at the front counter. Sometimes I try to order at the front counter and they tell me to go to the juice door. Yesterday was the latter, so when I went to the juice door, nobody was there. I travel to Morro Bay as a regular detox vacation destination, but as a vegan I've been forced to eat pizza with no cheese or whatever I can scrounge at grocery stores (and lots of french fries). Since Shine Café opened, however, life is much better. The jackfruit carnita tacos are easily in the top three tacos I've eaten in my entire life, pre or post vegan. Culinary wizardry. The ruben is good as are the smoothies and "Pack a Bowl" bowl and burrito options. It's a bit warm inside but has a patio with amazing Morro breezes. Could have been that they sat on the counter a while. FELLOW CELIACS PROCEED WITH CAUTION I have eaten hundreds of meals here without incident. I have had a few that were accidentally cross contaminated and put me out of commission for up to 3 weeks. The owner was very concerned and discussed the problem with me. If you have Celiac disease you need to emphasize it, even if what you order is gluten free. The marks of was for the cashier he was very rude and shot with us while trying to order out meal. It was a bit of a turn off. Went here on Sunday 2/24/13 with the two teens. Daughter and I got the Green Dragon smoothie @$7.50 and son got the Island Fever smoothie @$6 (?). I was floored that this health food shop said no when I asked for wheat grass instead of the spirulina. Is wheat grass not healthy hip anymore? The smoothies are served in a glass canning jar with a straw and moderately sized. The Green Dragons were very good, very green, but not much ginger going on, and mostly a creamy banana flavor overall. The Island Fever was predominantly pineapple juice and orange juice coming through with no coconut at all. I'm guessing that they may just be using the now trendy coconut water in it and nothing more. Definitely fresh tasting smoothies but a bit pricey nevertheless. The menu also has a lot of vegetarian items that looked tasty. As another reviewer said, the cafe is dank and blah. And the staff is not personable at all, just like the decor. The attitude from them is that of some random college students with no personality or training who happen to run a natural foods juice bar cafe. We go to Morro Bay very often and this crew of customer service amateurs need to realize that in order to cultivate my future business, they need to be friendly to inspire my return. It's a simple, yet elusive combination of good service, good atmosphere, and good food that makes for a pleasant dining experience, no matter how casual it may be. Shine Cafe fails to deliver. The front shop is the basic vitamin stock and fresh organic produce, etc. that you'd see in any health food store. I have always wanted to check this place out and I am glad we did. As charming as Morro Bay can be, there aren't many other reasons, besides Shine Cafe, to trek up there. But when I'm craving some fresh vegan food prepared with love, I know this place fits the bill. I recently had blackberry banana walnut pancakes with berries on the side, along with the tofu scramble. Both were satisfying and fulfilled my breakfast craving for the day. Don't forget to try the Joy Cups--delicious vegan peanut butter cups with different fruit infusions. Yummy. Our first (and last) visit to this place (13 July 2015) was ruined by rudeness. At the juice bar I had asked for what they would recommend for a hangover and the woman (with a tattoo on her right arm) looked me in the eye and said "Don't drink." I really love their strawberry shakes but when I went in there today, I had a bad experience. Tried to order a shake at the window where I'm suppose to order and I get told by the guy making drinks to go order at the counter because he's too busy. I 100% understand when establishments get busy and did not mind at all. This was not an issue at all. I order my shake at the counter and sit down at a table. While I'm sitting down at my table I look up when they called an order that sounded like "shakes" and a different worker said "are you Shane?" And I was like "oh no." The worker goes behind the counter and says "I hate when people look at you when it's not their order" I really don't understand why this worker did that or why it was necessary to say that. It was unprofessional and really makes me not want to come here again. I obviously misheard and was just trying to see if it was my order. I stayed in Morro bay for one nite on my way up to Big Sur and what a treat. I ate here twice! Really clean and cute lil cafe. I had the soup of the day (mushroom + rice) along with the rueben sandwich. So Delicious! The food was flavorful and the veggies looked alive. I noticed a lot of people were munching on the tempeh tacos and spring rolls so decided to return the next day to try both.
