I have eaten here many times because my boyfriend loves this place. The sushi is great, always fresh and delicious. I'm a big fan of the Sashimi dinner - fresh, large portion size, has never let me down. :) However, there is just somthing missing. I feel that the food is overpriced. The food, other than sushi, leaves little to be desired. It was very bland. For the price you are paying for the food, I feel that the quality of food is lacking. I've had more favorful food at way less expensive restaurants. The ambiance is alright, nothing to rave about. Service is so-so. I should have written a review for this place when I went in May, I've forgotten some of the minute details since then. Oh well. At the time of my visit the place was still waiting for approval to serve liquor so my companion and I walked to a local package store and purchased wine. There is a corkage fee. She splurged on sushi and I enjoyed shrimp fried rice with a little spice. The place is a little compact, be prepared to talk extremely loud, but overall it's a cute space. Our food arrived hot and relatively quickly. My friend had the dragon roll and something else don't remember at this point. Both were surprisingly good. I love fried rice you have to try really hard to screw it up IMO. Overall I'd love to return to Shine again and I pray I can recreate the same good experience. read more

I go to Shine quite frequently, which would make you think I am a "fan." However, I cannot justify giving Shine 4 stars with all the great sushi places in the city. The ambiance is quite nice and the sushi is good but I have had much better of both. I think Shine is a good place to go on a "school night" and grab some food. You can have a nice conversation as the restaurant never gets too loud on weeknights. Order up some sushi and a beer/wine and enjoy. Just don't expect to get blown away. read more

This is/was a sister restaurant to the very delicious Republic restaurant that was downtown prior to its demise. We were very sad to see Republic go as it was our every Friday evening spot. Before Republic went away their staff told us about Shine, but we had some how forgotten about it. We rediscovered Shine this past weekend while looking through Yelp for some good Chinese takeout. Wow...are we glad we did!!! They have the same sesame chicken that I used to eat at Republic except they call it Sesame roast (or something similar) and it is sooooooo good!!! We also tried a couple of appetizers and everything was yummy. We will definitely not be forgetting about Shine again and will definitely be ordering takeout from here again!!! read more

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the city. My order: Akuna Maki and Orange Peel Chicken and share both with a friend - PERFECT. Definitely a really quaint and modern place, an atmosphere I'd bring any friends and family from out of town, maybe even a nice birthday. Found this place through Yelp a few months ago and used a coupon on Yelp, one I wish I could still use! Always friendly staff and fresh, flavorful food. I've tried the fried rice and mongolian beef, that's about it, though. I usually stick to my one sushi roll as well, it's so unique and only on their special menu (which they have everyday, but it's not on the menu online.) I'm an sushi fanatic, I eat it plenty in New York City, but when my buddy and I stopped by this place on a Chicago vacation, I have to say, they surprised us! For what we would normally pay for an inferior roll, we got quite the deal on their summer roll (lobster-salmon), the Spicy Octopus and Spicy Scallop roll. My impression: Holy crap this is good! There was just the perfect, and I mean PERFECT, blend of rice, fish and spicy mayo (I will remark, that spicy mayo was the best I've ever had). That consistency, couple with the lounge/cool vibe of the spot, added for an awfully classy sushi experience. The wait staff was also generous and welcoming, not overbearing at all (and actually quite helpful in navigating 'out-of-towners' to some hot spots). I would highly recommend coming here if you're big into sushi. We paid about $22 a piece for the 3 rolls, and had a glass of plum wine. Unfortunately this place is rated a gem in the light of people knowing no better. Fact: the restaurant is in the middle of Depaul. What is the incentive to be incredible? College Kids who can afford eating out aren't exactly connoisseurs. College kid parents are going with what their kids say. The best: our server Tuk was super friendly and sweet! I would recommend that you ask for her. She is on top of her game and a darling. I had the Hot Pot $14 for Chicken - so much gristle. Ugh!!! So gross to bite down on gristle. Restaurants that try to serve all kinds of Asian food usually make me a little nervous, but at Shine, for some reason it just works. I probably get chinese takeout from here once a week or so, and it is amazing. I've tried so many (seriously, dozens) different places in Chicago, and Shine is by far the best. I always get the mongolian beef and the sesame chicken, so if you're looking for a sure bet try those! The sushi is also surprisingly fantastic. I've heard people say they don't think it's very good, but honestly, short of places like Japonais and Coast, I think it's one of the best sushi places in the city. The nigiri is always perfectly fresh, and they don't use huge blocks of rice like some places do. My boyfriend and I always share the Armitage sushi combo (two pieces each of maguro, unagi, ebi, hamachi and namasake and a california roll) and it's the perfect mix of all of our favorites. The specialty rolls are also very good--try the honey roll for something subtle, or try the Hawaii roll or the Red Dragon if you want something more indulgent. read more

Shine....how you've disappointed me...up until a couple years ago, I was a frequent customer, and thought that Shine was up there in my top five Chicagoland sushi spots. Moved out of the neighborhood, but alas, my little sister just moved around the corner, and we went tonight to address a serious sushi craving. Seaweed salad - always delicious - but the rolls...totally disappointing. The rolls didn't hold up to my chopsticks - they just fell apart - and the rice to fish ratio seemed off. Our Mexican maki tasted like it came straight from a can of Chicken of the Sea (and no Jessica Simpson - not like chicken, like shitty canned tuna). I can only hope that Rise hasn't gone to the dogs like Shine has - won't be back unless dragged by friends. read more

I went here for a friend's birthday the other night. She made a reservation, since there were 20 of us. The ambiance in the restaurant is chic and cool. The staff was very nice. I ordered the crab rangoon and harvest stir fry with shrimp. The crab rangoon was incredible! SO good! The Harvest Stir Fry was BLAND, even when drowning it in soy sauce. I just could not eat it all. My friend got the Crazi Maki and said hers was bland as well. Not a fan. The poor waitress could not keep up with drink/food orders, and we ended up waiting quite a while for our drinks. After one of our guests complained to the manager, she was great and served our table a complimentary bottle of champagne, which was a nice gesture. The waitress kept a smile, even after the complaint. I would personally not go back here. For crab rangoon and bland shrimp stir fry, with tax and automatic gratuity, I paid $32. NOT WORTH IT. I wouldn't recommend this place, especially because there are so many other great restaurants in Lincoln Park. Overpriced and not delicious. FYI: Valet is $8. read more

Now under new ownership--May 2017 Has NO understanding of food allergy. Vegetarian roll ordered with special,notation of shellfish allergy. Arrived with shrimp in it! Neither order taker not new owner had the slightest understanding of the magnitude of the problem. There has been no training of staff and there is apparently no quality control in the kitchen either. To say that they mishandled customer relations thereafter doesn't cover it either. I only tried the sushi, but each roll we tried was amazing! You could tell it was very fresh and they had so many reasonably priced special rolls. The only reason I'd dock a star is because our waiter definitely forgot about us after delivering our food. He seemed to realize his mistake and made sure that once we paid he turned around the check quickly, but we were sitting trying to wave him down for at least 15 minutes. I've ordered take out from here and all i could say was eh to the General Tso. usually one of my favs! The Crab Rangoon was delicious! probably not healthy but very delicious. I figured, good rangoon, maybe in store the food would be great. The appearance was spacious and contemporary. but the paid thai...was a huge disappointment. I love pad thai almost above all else and theirs is tweaked and has a wierd flavor to it. Did not enjoy. Girlfriend's sushi looked terrible too. But they were extremely attentive and noticed that we did not enjoy / eat our meal and were extremely apologetic. They comped our food and asked if they could make us anything else. Appetite was lost but I demanded i pay for the delicious Rangoon and our drinks. I imagine they can do good Thai/Chinese but not so sure on the sushi. read more

This place was highly recommended by a friend and I had high hopes, but I was extremely underwhelmed. The atmosphere is decent enough, and the service was good, but the food and drink were extremely disappointing. I ordered the Pink Cadillac to drink (a strawberry-type martini). WARNING: This was the worst drink I've ever had. I could not get down more than two gulps of this. I felt like I was drinking strawberry-flavored pepto-bismal. YUCK. If I ever come back, maybe I'll order a Mojito or something else. We got calamari as an appetizer, an order of pad thai to split, and also a honey roll since I read about it in the rave reviews on Yelp. The calamari was good (not the best I've had, but certainly not the worst). The pad thai tasted weird--almost sweet and sour. I took the leftovers home, and oddly enough, it tasted much better reheated the next day. Weird! As for the honey roll, I was SORELY disappointed. It was extremely bland, and didn't really taste like anything...just rice and a little sweet. Even though I wasn't impressed with my choices at Shine, I wouldn't completely rule it out. My girlfriend and I went here on Valentine's Day (normally not a good barometer because of the crowds and hype) and we had an amazing experience! They allowed reservations (many places wouldn't on V-Day) and were accomodating of our tardiness. Parking can be difficult. Upon arrival, we were seated in the sushi bar area. The atmosphere in this section is a bit casual, so my date requested that we be seated in the main dining area with "mood-lighting." To our surprise, they did so without any hesitation or annoyance. Throughout the entire experience they were more than happy to accomodate our every need. She is a Sushi girl, and I am not. Shine had the perfect menu to suit both of our appetites. We began with tempura, in which the vegetables were fresh and the batter was crisp. She had a bagel maki and a rock n' roll maki, and loved both. I tried the sesame stir-fry with beef and had quite a unique experience: the meat had a crispy and sweet coating, but was literally so tender on the inside that I could chew it with my tongue! It was served with steamed broccoli, which (again) was fresh and crispy, sealing the deal. (I can't wait to warm up my left-overs!) All in all, Shine has excellent food, a friendly staff, and a great atmosphere. The perfect place for a date (V-Day or otherwise!) P.S.: The desert was out of this world! The inside of the place is very nice. They put on a good presentation. The sushi was pretty good. It didn't really stand out above any other sushi I've tried though. My main issue was how incredibly slow they were. There were not a ridiculous amount of people in the restaurnat and there were a lot of waiters/waitresses on staff. I went with three people. We ordered 2 orders of edamame, 3 of us ordered soup and we each only ordered one roll. We were in there for over 2 hours before we received our sushi. By that time we were all starving and ready to just get out of there. If that wasn't bad enought, the waitress forgot to put in one of our rolls and did not tell us until the other three were on the table. By the time the last roll got there, my friend did not even want to eat it anymore. We were close to where the rolls were being made, and after mine was brought to me, I realized that it was the same roll that I saw sitting there for 20 minutes beforehand. It's really hard for good food to make up for bad service. I prefer House of Sushi and Noodles. read more

I have been ordering from Shine for years -- though a tad pricey, their food was reliably excellent. However, recently they have changed, and for the worse. Last week the GF and I ordered from Shine and she requested her favorite Crisp Lettuce Wraps for $12.00. When it arrived, we found that the portion was about 1/3 what we had been used to -- for the same price. When I complained they explained that they had decided the portion had been too much for an appetizer so they downsized it (n.b., they have since lowered the price to $10 -- presumably still for 1/3 of what it was at $12). They did offer a free order next time. Which brings me to... Next time we ordered I asked for the free Crisp Lettuce Wraps and General Tso's Shrimp for $16 (according to the menu accessed from the Shine website). When I was quoted the total charge it seemed high, so I asked and was told that the price was $19 now. I mentioned that they need to update their website to reflect these prices (they later called me back and claimed that their online menu reflected the new price -- I checked and it was still $16). Then, upon reflection, I cancelled the order. I have come to the sad decision to find my Chinese food elsewhere, as these prices and policies are just not very appetizing, no matter how good the food is. read more

The place was decent enough inside. They make a good attempt at being classy but it really is just a casual place which is just fine. The service was pleasant, knowledgeable of the menu and attentive. The food was pretty good obviously pricey since your in Lincoln Park. If you find yourself in the area you could do a whole lot worse. I would go back, but I think I might try someplace else first just to have some comparisons. The chocolate covered cheesecake squares were really good, but alas they do not serve coffee which I thought was rather strange. read more

Love this restaurant conveniently located in Lincoln park . My favorite choice is Salmon Roll with Avocado as an appetizer. I tried Crab with curry source this time , it tastes far better than steamed seafood. Of course , if you love Japanese Sushi , do check varieties of rolls all freshly made . The three of us had dinner there last night, January 12, 2018 on a Friday night. It was an okay meal; nothing to write home to. However, when the duck wrap was served, I took a bite into something that poked through my inner mouth, and it was a partial sharp toothpick (made by bamboo). The waitress was still there serving other dishes so I asked her to take it away. She did apologize and offered to make another or take it off the bill. However, what she didn't know was my mouth was bleeding for several minutes from the hole poked through by the toothpick in my mouth. I did see the waitress explain what happened to a lady seemingly in change. What I was upset was that lady in charge did not offer any apology. There couldn't have been a worse dining experience than getting injured from eating unsanitary food in a restaurant. Even if I was gonna ignore the fact that we walked into a completely empty restaurant and weren't allowed to sit at a warmer table. (We were seated by the window where the cold wind keeps coming through. I asked for another table as we walked in and was denied which remained empty the entire mealtime.) So I haven't actually dined here, but I'm a VIP with the delivery service. I realized that the chinese food is much better than the sushi. The sushi i've ordered just always tastes "off" to me. I used to love the seasame chicken, but the portion is a bit of a rip-off and sometimes it's just too sweet for me. I really like their Pad Thai with chicken- plus, it's a very generous portion. The steamed or pan-fried potstickers are very good too. The delivery always comes in about 30 minutes. read more
